Unidirectional Language Model

Unidirectional language models primarily employ recurrent neural networks (RNNs) as their underlying architecture. RNNs process input data one token at a time, maintaining an internal state that represents the accumulated knowledge of the previously processed tokens. This internal state allows the RNN to capture and utilize contextual information from previous tokens when generating predictions.
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks are a specific type of RNN architecture that address the issue of vanishing gradients, a common problem in standard RNNs. Vanishing gradients occur when the gradients used in the backpropagation process become too small, making it difficult for the model to learn long-range dependencies. LSTM networks utilize a gating mechanism to control the flow of information, enabling the network to better capture long-range dependencies and improve its ability to model complex language structures.
Unidirectional vs Bidirectional Models
Unidirectional language models differ from bidirectional language models in the way they process and generate text. While unidirectional models only consider the context from either preceding or succeeding words in a sequence, bidirectional models take into account both the preceding and succeeding words. This allows bidirectional models to better capture the context of the entire sequence, leading to improved performance on many NLP tasks.
Limitations of Unidirectional Models
Unidirectional models have some limitations compared to their bidirectional counterparts. As they only take into account one direction of context, they may not fully capture the meaning of a given word or phrase. Additionally, unidirectional models may struggle with tasks that require a deeper understanding of the entire input sequence, such as sentiment analysis or machine translation.
