Adobe Inc. is an American software company best known for creative and document tools such as [Photoshop](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/adobe_photoshop), Illustrator, [Premiere Pro](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/adobe_premiere_pro) and Acrobat that has, since 2023, become one of the most closely watched incumbents of the [generative AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/generative_ai) era through its [Firefly](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/adobe_firefly) family of image, vector, video and [audio models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/audio_models). Adobe launched Firefly on March 21, 2023, and by June 2025 said users had generated more than 24 billion assets with it, up from 22 billion in April 2025 [1][5][19][30]. Founded in December 1982 and headquartered in San Jose, California, Adobe builds its AI strategy on three pillars: [generative model](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/generative_model)s trained on licensed and public-domain content that it markets as "commercially safe," deep integration of features such as [Generative Fill](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/ai_image_generation) into Creative Cloud applications [2], and leadership of the [Content Authenticity Initiative](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/content_authenticity_initiative) and the [C2PA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/c2pa) provenance standard [3]. Adobe's AI period has also included a roughly $20 billion attempt to acquire [Figma](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/figma) that collapsed under regulatory pressure in December 2023 [4], an unusual embrace of rival model providers such as [OpenAI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai), [Google](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/google) and [Runway](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/runway_ml) inside its own products [5][6], and recurring friction with the artist communities that underpin its business [7]. In 2026 Adobe announced and then expanded a strategic partnership with [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia), bought the brand-visibility company Semrush and the AI enhancement company [Topaz Labs](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/topaz_labs), and named Anil Chakravarthy to succeed Narayen as chief executive on December 1, 2026 [31][35][36][47][49].

## Overview

Adobe was founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, two former Xerox PARC researchers, and is led by chair and chief executive [Shantanu Narayen](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/shantanu_narayen), who has held the CEO role since December 2007. On March 12, 2026, Narayen said he would step down once a successor was appointed [38][41]. On September 3, 2026, Adobe announced that Anil Chakravarthy, president of its Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations, would become president and CEO and join the board on December 1, 2026, with Narayen becoming executive chair [36][37]. Through fiscal 2025 Adobe reported its results mainly through two segments: [Digital Media](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/digital_media), which included the Creative Cloud and Document Cloud subscription businesses, and Digital Experience, which sold marketing, analytics and content-supply-chain software [39]. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026 it combined its former segments (Digital Media, Digital Experience and Publishing and Advertising) into a single reportable segment, and its reporting and guidance now center on subscription revenue from two customer groups, Business Professionals & Consumers and Creative & Marketing Professionals, plus total company ARR [39][40]. In fiscal 2025, which ended in late November 2025, Adobe reported record revenue of $23.77 billion, up 11 percent year over year, and said that what it calls "AI-influenced" annualized recurring revenue (ARR) represented more than one third of its overall book of business [8].

Rather than positioning AI as a standalone product line, Adobe has threaded generation, editing and agent features through nearly all of its applications, while simultaneously selling Firefly as a consumption-based service and reselling third-party [frontier models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/frontier_models) inside its own interfaces [5]. This "commercially safe plus open ecosystem" posture distinguishes it from AI-native rivals such as [Midjourney](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/midjourney) and from platform competitors that ship only their own models.

## History

Adobe's PostScript page-description language helped create desktop publishing in the mid-1980s; Photoshop followed in 1990 and the PDF format in 1993. The company shifted its flagship applications from perpetual licenses to the subscription-based Creative Cloud between 2012 and 2013, and introduced [Adobe Sensei](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/adobe_sensei), an umbrella brand for machine-learning features such as content-aware editing, in 2016.

In September 2022, Adobe agreed to acquire the collaborative design platform Figma for approximately $20 billion in cash and stock, its largest-ever deal. After more than a year of antitrust review, the companies mutually terminated the agreement on December 18, 2023, citing "no clear path" to approval from the European Commission and the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority; Adobe paid Figma a $1 billion reverse termination fee [4][9][38]. The collapse left Adobe to pursue growth organically just as generative AI was redrawing the creative-software market, and the Firefly program, announced nine months earlier, became central to that response.

## What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative [AI models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/model) for creating and editing images, vector art, video and audio, and the standalone web app and APIs that expose them. Adobe unveiled Firefly on March 21, 2023, as a public beta focused on [text-to-image](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/text-to-image_models) generation and stylized text effects [1][10]. David Wadhwani, president of Adobe's Digital Media business, framed the launch in the announcement: "Generative AI is the next evolution of AI-driven creativity and [productivity](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/productivity), transforming the conversation between creator and computer into something more natural, intuitive and powerful." [1]

### How was Firefly trained, and why does Adobe call it "commercially safe"?

Unlike most contemporaries, Adobe trained the first Firefly model on Adobe Stock imagery, openly licensed content and public-domain works whose copyright had expired, a dataset choice it promoted as making outputs safe for commercial use [1]. Adobe stated that Firefly was "designed to generate images safe for commercial use" and that its [training set](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/training_set) deliberately avoided others' intellectual property or brand assets [1]. Firefly became generally available on September 13, 2023, when Adobe integrated it across Creative Cloud, Adobe Express and Adobe Experience Cloud and introduced "generative credits," a metered consumption system bundled into subscription tiers [2]. The same day, Adobe paid the first "Firefly bonus" to Adobe Stock contributors whose images had been used in training, a payment weighted by the number of images and the licenses they had generated [11].

For business customers, Adobe announced Firefly for enterprises in June 2023 and offered indemnification: it agreed to cover certain intellectual-property claims arising from Firefly-generated content, a first-of-its-kind assurance intended to ease corporate legal concerns about generative imagery [12][13]. Adobe general counsel Dana Rao told TechCrunch that what Adobe would indemnify is "the output of Firefly" [13].

### What are the Firefly model generations?

| Model | Announced | Notes |

| Firefly Image Model 5 | October 2025 | Native 4-megapixel output and conversational, prompt-based editing [18] |

At Adobe MAX on October 28, 2025, the company also previewed generative audio capabilities, including soundtrack and speech generation in beta, and a Firefly-branded AI video editor, repositioning Firefly as an "all-in-one creative AI studio" [18][30]. Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer, described the goal as making Firefly span the full workflow: "Adobe Firefly supports your entire end-to-end creative process, from when you first explore ideas to when you bring them to the world with AI-powered video, audio, imaging and design." [18] Adobe said users had generated more than 22 billion assets with Firefly by April 2025 [5], a figure it updated to more than 24 billion in June 2025 [19][30].

### Firefly app and partner models

In February 2025 Adobe shipped a standalone Firefly web application built around the new video model [17]. At MAX London on April 24, 2025, it went further and began offering competing third-party models inside Firefly, starting with OpenAI's [GPT Image](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_image_1), Google's [Imagen](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/imagen) 3 and [Veo](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/veo) 2, and [Black Forest Labs](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/black_forest_labs)' Flux 1.1 Pro, all selectable beside Adobe's own models [5]. Firefly mobile apps for iOS and Android followed on June 17, 2025, alongside Firefly Boards, a collaborative moodboarding canvas [19].

The partner roster expanded through 2025 and 2026 to include [ElevenLabs](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/elevenlabs) and Topaz Labs (added at MAX in October 2025; Adobe later bought Topaz Labs) [18], plus models such as Runway's Gen-4 and Aleph, [Luma AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/luma_ai)'s Ray3, [Ideogram](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/ideogram) 3.0, [Moonvalley](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/moonvalley)'s Marey, [Pika](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/pika), Google's Veo 3.1, Imagen 4 and Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, and Kuaishou's [Kling](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/kling) 3.0 [18][20][21][22]. In December 2025, Adobe added prompt-based video editing to Firefly [20] and signed a multi-year strategic partnership making it Runway's "preferred API creativity partner," with early access to models including Gen-4.5 [6]. Cristobal Valenzuela, Runway's co-founder and chief executive, said the deal "puts our latest generative video technology in front of more storytellers, inside Adobe's creative tools." [6] In April 2026, Adobe announced Firefly AI Assistant, an agentic interface that plans and executes multi-step creative workflows across Firefly and Creative Cloud apps from conversational prompts, and said its catalog had grown past 30 Adobe and partner models [22]. Adobe also ran time-limited unlimited-generation offers. In December 2025 it gave subscribers to the Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, 7,000-credit and 50,000-credit plans unlimited generations from all image models and the Firefly Video Model in the Firefly app until January 15 [20]. In February 2026 it extended a similar offer to customers who signed up for Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium and the 4,000-, 7,000- and 50,000-credit plans before March 16, covering unlimited image and Firefly video generations up to 2K resolution with both Adobe's models and partner image models such as Google's Nano Banana Pro, OpenAI's GPT Image and Runway's Gen-4 Image [23].

On its third-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings call in September 2026, Adobe said it had added native generation of music, speech and sound effects to Firefly during the quarter, and that Disney Imagineering was integrating Firefly Foundry, the enterprise service that tunes Firefly models on a customer's own content, into its theme-park design toolkit [44][45].

## How does Adobe use AI inside Creative Cloud?

Firefly's most visible deployment is inside Adobe's flagship tools. Generative Fill, which inserts, extends or removes image content from a text prompt directly in Photoshop, entered beta on May 23, 2023, and shipped in the general release that September [24][2]. Adobe described Generative Fill at launch as "the world's first co-pilot in creative and design workflows" [24]. Illustrator gained Generative Recolor, Adobe Express gained text-to-image features, and Premiere Pro gained Generative Extend, which lengthens video clips using the Firefly Video Model [2][16].

On the document side, Acrobat AI Assistant, a conversational tool for querying and summarizing PDFs, became generally available in April 2024 as an add-on subscription starting at $4.99 per month [25]. For marketers, Adobe sells [GenStudio](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/adobe_genstudio), a generative content-production suite in Experience Cloud, and Brand Concierge, an application launched in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 that lets businesses configure AI agents to guide shoppers from exploration to purchase through conversational experiences [45]. In its first quarter of fiscal 2026 Adobe made Acrobat, Express and Photoshop available as apps inside OpenAI's [ChatGPT](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatgpt) [38]. The April 2026 Firefly AI Assistant extended this integration push toward agents that orchestrate work across Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom and Express from a single conversational surface [22].

## What is Adobe's partnership with NVIDIA?

Adobe and [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia) announced a strategic partnership on March 16, 2026, at NVIDIA's GTC conference [35]. Under it, Adobe said it would build the next generation of foundational Firefly models on NVIDIA computing and the CUDA-X and NeMo libraries, explore NVIDIA's [Agent Toolkit](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_agent_toolkit), OpenShell runtime and [Nemotron](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nemotron) open models for agentic workflows, bring Nemotron capabilities to Acrobat, and accelerate Frame.io media decoding and semantic search with [CUDA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cuda) [35]. The two companies also launched a public beta of a cloud-native 3D digital twin service for marketing built on [NVIDIA Omniverse](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_omniverse) libraries and OpenUSD, and said Firefly Foundry would use NVIDIA computing to run custom enterprise models [35]. NVIDIA chief executive Jensen Huang said in the announcement: "For more than 20 years, NVIDIA and Adobe have partnered to push the boundaries of design and creativity." [35]

On October 15, 2026, the companies expanded the arrangement to cover Photoshop, Premiere, Substance 3D, Frame.io and Brand Concierge [31][32]. The performance figures below are Adobe's and NVIDIA's own claims, and the companies describe the Frame.io numbers as early results from selected workloads [31][32]. Trade coverage repeated them as vendor figures [33][34].

| Product | Change announced October 15, 2026 | Claimed result |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop, Premiere, Substance 3D | Optimized for the [NVIDIA RTX Spark](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_rtx_spark) "superchip" and its unified memory; Photoshop rearchitected around GPU-accelerated compositing | Up to 2x faster AI processing, editing, color and effects [31][32] |
| Frame.io | Cloud media pipeline moved to NVIDIA GPUs, using NVDEC hardware decoding and [TensorRT](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tensorrt) with CUDA for preprocessing and embedding generation | About 5x faster embedding generation, 4-5x better P95 processing latency and an about 80% smaller search proxy on selected transcode and search workloads [31][32] |
| Brand Concierge | Optimized with NVIDIA Nemotron open models; enterprise availability planned for later in 2026 | NVIDIA selected Brand Concierge to run conversational experiences on NVIDIA.com [31][32] |

NVIDIA's copy of the release said RTX Spark PCs would go on sale on October 16, 2026, and that the companies would show the work at Adobe MAX, held November 10-12, 2026, at the Miami Beach Convention Center [32][33]. Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe's vice president of product marketing for creative professionals, said the aim was "delivering the performance creatives need to bring their ideas to life" [31].

## Acquisitions and leadership changes, 2025-2026

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| November 19, 2025 | Adobe announces an agreement to acquire Semrush Holdings for an equity value of about $1.9 billion in cash [45] |
| March 12, 2026 | Narayen says he will step down as CEO once a successor is appointed, remaining board chair [38][41] |
| April 28, 2026 | Adobe completes the Semrush acquisition; its 10-Q gives the price as $1.87 billion, primarily in cash [40][47] |
| June 15, 2026 | Chief financial officer Dan Durn leaves; Steve Day becomes interim CFO [42] |
| June 24-25, 2026 | Adobe agrees to acquire Topaz Labs, a maker of AI video and image enhancement models, for about $340 million, primarily in cash [40][48] |
| September 3, 2026 | Adobe names Anil Chakravarthy its next president and CEO, effective December 1, 2026; David Wadhwani, president of the creativity and productivity business, says he will leave [36][37] |
| September 23, 2026 | Adobe completes the Topaz Labs acquisition; the Topaz brand and standalone apps continue [49] |

Adobe said the Semrush deal strengthens its CX Enterprise offering with search engine optimization, generative engine optimization and agentic search optimization tools for marketers, as AI assistants and agents become a main way customers find brands [47]. It said it would integrate Topaz Labs' tools and models into Creative Cloud workflows; Topaz technology was already available in Firefly and Photoshop before the deal closed [44][49].

## How does Adobe label AI-generated content?

Adobe founded the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) at its MAX conference on November 4, 2019, together with The New York Times Company and Twitter, to develop provenance metadata for digital content [26][50]. In February 2021 it co-founded the Coalition for [Content Provenance](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/content_provenance) and Authenticity (C2PA) with Arm, BBC, [Intel](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/intel), [Microsoft](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/microsoft) and Truepic, merging the CAI's work with the Microsoft- and BBC-led Project Origin to produce a single open technical standard [3]. Adobe described the C2PA at its founding as "a mutually governed consortium created to accelerate the pursuit of pragmatic, adoptable standards for digital provenance" whose members "share a commitment to creating standards that bolster the public's understanding of what is real and what is not" [3]. The resulting [Content Credentials](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/content_credentials) system attaches cryptographically signed metadata recording how a piece of content was made and edited, including whether AI was involved.

Adobe applies Content Credentials automatically to Firefly outputs, marking them as AI-generated [2], and has built credential inspection and attachment tools into Creative Cloud apps. The effort has become the de facto industry framework for AI-content labeling, with camera makers, newsrooms, platforms and other AI vendors adopting C2PA metadata, although coverage across the open web remains partial [26].

## How much money does Adobe make from AI?

Adobe monetizes AI through generative credits, standalone Firefly subscriptions, enterprise Firefly deals and AI add-ons. In September 2025 Narayen said AI-influenced ARR had surpassed $5 billion and that ARR from "AI-first" products was "already exceeding our $250 million year-end target" [46], while broader AI-influenced ARR surpassed one third of total business exiting fiscal 2025 [8][45]; one analysis put the figure near $8 billion, up from roughly $3.5 billion a year earlier [28]. Generative-credit consumption tripled quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, a period when Adobe temporarily offered unlimited generations on select plans [8][45]. In its first quarter of fiscal 2026, reported in March 2026, total ARR reached $26.06 billion, up 10.9 percent year over year, though net-new Digital Media ARR of about $400 million missed analyst expectations, feeding a persistent investor debate over whether generative AI ultimately strengthens Adobe or exposes it to AI-native competitors such as Midjourney, OpenAI's [Sora](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/sora) and Google's media models [28].

Adobe's fiscal 2026 results, as reported in its earnings releases, are summarized below. AI-first ARR is Adobe's own metric and is disclosed only as a threshold or growth rate.

| Quarter (fiscal 2026) | Reported | Revenue | Total Adobe ARR | AI-first ARR disclosure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 (ended Feb. 27, 2026) | March 12, 2026 | $6.40 billion, up 12% | $26.06 billion | "More than triples" year over year [41] |
| Q2 (ended May 29, 2026) | June 11, 2026 | $6.62 billion, up 13% | $27.10 billion, including about $480 million from Semrush | Triples year over year and exceeds $500 million [42] |
| Q3 (ended Aug. 28, 2026) | September 10, 2026 | $6.76 billion, up 13% | $27.50 billion | Grew more than 150% year over year, to more than $650 million [43][44] |

In the first quarter, an analysis by Zacks said Firefly's ending ARR across the Firefly app, credit packs and Firefly Enterprise exceeded $250 million [27]. The Adobe Stock business also declined faster than management had expected; David Wadhwani said on the call that the shift was "playing out more quickly than we had planned for" [38]. In September 2026 Adobe raised its fiscal 2026 revenue target to $26.576 billion to $26.626 billion, said it had passed 1 billion monthly active users across its creativity and productivity products, and told analysts that Firefly ending ARR across the Firefly app and credit packs grew 40 percent quarter over quarter [43][44]. The share price did not follow: CNBC reported that Adobe stock fell 25 percent in 2024 and 21 percent in 2025, and was down 18 percent in 2026 as of September 3 [37].

Relations with creators have been more turbulent. Some Adobe Stock contributors objected that their images trained Firefly without an explicit opt-in, and critics called the Firefly bonus payments modest [11]. A larger controversy erupted in June 2024, when a mandatory re-acceptance of terms of use, quietly amended that February, surfaced language allowing Adobe to access user content "through both automated and manual methods"; many artists read it as permission to train AI on their private work, and the inability to uninstall apps without accepting the terms amplified the backlash [7]. Adobe published clarifications and then rewrote the terms later that month, stating explicitly that customers own their content and that Adobe does not train generative AI on customer content, with the exception of submissions to the Adobe Stock marketplace [29]. The episode, alongside the commercially-safe positioning of Firefly, illustrates the balance Adobe attempts to strike: courting professional creators wary of generative AI while racing to ship it across every product it sells.
