AI usage limits are the caps that providers of subscription AI services place on how much computing a customer can consume before waiting for a reset. Between 2025 and 2026 they hardened from a background nuisance into one of the defining constraints of working with [frontier models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/frontier_models): coding agents such as [Claude Code](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_code) and [OpenAI Codex](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai_codex) made it possible to consume in hours what earlier chat interfaces spread across a month, and every major provider responded with layered session windows, weekly caps, and metered credit systems.[12][32] The moment a window renews, the limit reset, has developed a small culture of its own: OpenAI staff announce bonus resets on X to mark milestones, [Anthropic](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/anthropic) resets everyone's windows after incidents and launches, and third-party sites track the announcements the way others track service status.[43][44]

This article explains how the major subscription limit systems work and when they reset, how they differ from API rate limits, how the limits were introduced, and the growing catalogue of out-of-cycle resets and promotions. [AI Wiki](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/ai_wiki) also maintains a free, browser-local [limit reset tracker](/limit_resets) with live countdowns and sourced reset histories for Codex and Claude.

## Two regimes: subscription windows and API rate limits

The same models are metered in two different ways depending on how they are bought.

Subscription plans such as [ChatGPT Plus](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatgpt_plus), [Claude Pro](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_pro), and Google AI Pro bundle a fixed monthly price with usage windows: allowances that refill on a schedule measured in hours, weeks, or calendar months. Hitting one means waiting for the reset or, increasingly, buying metered extra usage. API access is pay-per-token with rate limits: ceilings on requests and tokens per minute or day that protect shared capacity rather than define what was purchased. The two are separate billing systems: the Claude API is billed separately from a Claude subscription, although as of October 2026 Max, [Ultra](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_ultra), and Team plans include a monthly API credit, and ChatGPT plans include no API credits.[61][69]

| Product | Short window | Longer cap | Documented reset rule (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Claude](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude) (all plans) | 5-hour session allowance (none for verified Ultra accounts since October 30, 2026) | Weekly limits on most paid plans | Rolling 5-hour window; weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week assigned to the account[2][4][121] |
| Codex / [ChatGPT](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatgpt) | 5-hour window shared by local and cloud tasks (none on Pro or Business Premium) | Weekly limits may apply by plan | Limits are account-specific, shown on the usage screen; a new 5-hour window starts with the first Work or Codex message after the previous one ends; the 5-hour limit applies to Plus and Standard Business, while Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 currently have no 5-hour limit, after OpenAI suspended it on July 12, 2026 and restored it for Plus on August 25, 2026[32][33][71][97][98] |
| [Gemini](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gemini) app | Allowance refreshes every 5 hours | Weekly limit | 5-hour refresh under a weekly cap, since May 17, 2026[47] |
| Gemini API and [Gemini CLI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gemini_cli) | Per-minute request caps | Daily request quotas | Daily quotas reset at midnight Pacific Time[50][51] |
| [GitHub Copilot](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/github_copilot) | None | Monthly AI credit allowance | Resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, no rollover[52][54] |
| [Cursor](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cursor) | None (Auto usage included) | Monthly included usage value | Monthly billing cycle[57] |
| [Anthropic API](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/anthropic_api) | Requests and tokens per minute | Monthly spend cap by tier | Token bucket replenished continuously, no fixed reset moment[59] |
| [OpenAI API](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai_api) | Requests and tokens per minute | Daily quotas and monthly usage caps by tier | Per-minute and per-day windows; reset times returned in response headers[60] |

The near-convergence on a 5-hour-plus-weekly design is recent. Anthropic completed it in August 2025 when weekly caps joined its five-hour sessions, Codex adopted the same shape, and Google moved the Gemini app onto it on May 17, 2026.[12][47]

## Claude

Anthropic meters claude.ai plans, including the free tier, with a session allowance on a rolling 5-hour window.[1][4] The exception since October 30, 2026 is Ultra, the $200 plan previously called Max 20x: Anthropic renamed its [Claude Max](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_max) tiers that day and began removing the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, while newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified.[121][122] The help center long explained sessions as starting with the user's first message and lasting five hours, wording that now survives mainly in third-party guides; current documentation says simply that the session limit resets every five hours, and the Claude Code cost docs call it "a rolling five-hour window."[2][4] Because [Claude Code](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_code) and [Claude Cowork](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_cowork) run on the same subscription, chat, coding agent, and agentic workspace all drain one shared pool.[4][7]

Weekly limits are the newer and more contested layer. Pro, Max, and per-seat Team and Enterprise plans carry caps that reset at a fixed time each week assigned to the account, visible in the usage screen rather than derivable from a public clock; consumption-based Enterprise plans have no included allowance to cap.[2][6][9] As of October 2026, Pro has one weekly limit covering all models, while Max and Ultra plans carry two: one across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable models.[2][3][7][8][121] The second cap has shifted identity with the model lineup. It launched in August 2025 as an Opus-only cap, Anthropic removed the model-specific cap when [Claude Opus 4.5](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_opus_4_5) arrived on November 24, 2025, and in July 2026 the Max plan page still described it as covering Sonnet models only.[12][16][93] The usage-limit help pages now show a Fable weekly reset, but Claude Code's error documentation still lists separate Opus and Sonnet limit messages, so the details are worth checking against your own usage screen.[6][5]

Reset times are published per account. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows progress bars for the 5-hour session and the weekly limits, the /usage command in Claude Code shows the same bars plus a breakdown of which skills, subagents, and MCP servers consumed the allowance, and the limit errors themselves carry exact times, in the form "resets Mon 12:00am."[6][4][5]

| Plan | Price (October 2026) | Session usage | Weekly caps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Baseline 5-hour allowance[1] | Limited weekly usage, no figure published[10] |
| Pro | $17/month annual, $20 monthly | At least 5x Free | One, across all models[2][10] |
| Max (Max 5x until October 30, 2026) | $100/month | 5x Pro | 5x Pro; two caps: all models, plus a separate Fable limit[3][10] |
| Ultra (Max 20x until October 30, 2026) | $200/month | No five-hour limit for verified accounts | 10x Pro; two caps: all models, plus a separate Fable limit[10][121] |
| Team standard seat | $20/month annual, $25 monthly | Standard seat allowance | Weekly window per seat[4][10] |
| Team premium seat | $100/month annual, $125 monthly | 5x standard seats | Weekly window per seat[4][10] |
| Enterprise (current) | $20/seat plus consumption at API rates | Consumption-based | Usage credits do not apply[9][10] |

Running out no longer always means waiting. Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers can enable usage credits that bill continued usage at standard API rates, with auto-reload and an optional monthly spend limit, and the five-hour and weekly limits keep resetting on schedule underneath.[8] Team and seat-based Enterprise owners can enable organization-level credits covering Claude, Cowork, and Claude Code, with per-user spend caps.[9] Inside Claude Code, /usage-credits opens the right billing screen.[4]

With the launch of [Claude Opus 5.5](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/claude_opus_5_5) on September 22, 2026, Anthropic began giving subscribers limit resets they can save and use when they choose, alongside higher five-hour limits (20% higher in Claude Code).[77][78] Pro, Max, and Team users received one to apply any time until October 22.[79] Using a reset sets either the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit back to full, depending on the reset offered, while the weekly limit keeps its usual reset day and time; it is applied with a "Reset for free" button on the web or in Claude Desktop, not in Claude Code's terminal or IDE.[76]

## OpenAI Codex and ChatGPT

Codex ships with every ChatGPT plan, including Free and the Go tier.[31] Local messages in the [Codex CLI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/codex_cli) and IDE extensions share one allowance with cloud tasks. On Plus and Standard Business it is metered in 5-hour periods, Pro plans currently have no 5-hour limit, and weekly limits may also apply.[32] OpenAI's help center says a new five-hour window starts when the user sends a first message in Work or Codex after the previous window ends, and that the five-hour limit can be reached before five hours have passed even while weekly usage remains.[98] Business Premium seats, introduced on August 24, 2026 at $100 per user per month billed annually ($125 monthly), launched with 5x the usage of Standard seats and no five-hour limit; OpenAI raised Premium usage again on October 29, 2026.[97][100] Since [ChatGPT Work](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatgpt_work) launched on July 9, 2026 as an agent surface beside Chat and Codex, the two draw from a single pool: OpenAI's pricing page states that "ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage."[65][32]

The system changed materially on July 12, 2026, when OpenAI temporarily suspended the 5-hour restriction for Plus, Business, and Pro plans with no announced end date, leaving weekly limits as the binding cap for paid users.[33] On July 29, Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux said the five-hour limit would be restored the next day, but the restoration was postponed.[70][71] The limit came back for Plus accounts across ChatGPT Work and Codex on August 25, 2026; Sottiaux said the window smooths load on OpenAI's compute and stops casual Plus users from accidentally exhausting a whole week's usage, and that OpenAI would keep the 5-hour limit disabled for the $100 and $200 Pro subscriptions "for the upcoming months."[71] OpenAI's pricing page now publishes five-hour estimates for Plus and Standard Business and states that "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit."[32] Sottiaux tested the trade-off on October 10, 2026 (Pacific time) with an X poll asking Pro users whether they would rather have "5h limits, 2X week usage" or "no 5h limits, same usage"; of 240,643 votes, 33.2% chose the first option and 37.8% the second, with the remainder only viewing results.[103] He wrote that he had expected the vote to "sway much more favorably in the 2X direction across Pro 100/200/500 at the cost of bringing back 5h limits in order to smoothen the demand curve."[104]

Allowances are published as per-model message ranges rather than token counts. In July 2026 the pricing page listed, for example, roughly 15 to 90 messages of [GPT-5.6](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_5_6) Sol per 5-hour window on Plus, with Pro then sold in 5x and 20x variants.[32][99] As of October 30, 2026 the Plus estimates per five-hour window are 5 to 45 local messages of [GPT-6 Astra](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_6_astra), 15 to 160 of [GPT-6.1 Sol](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_6_1_sol), 35 to 285 of [GPT-6.1 Terra](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_6_1_terra), 15 to 150 of [GPT-6 Sol](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_6_sol), and 350 to 3,000 of GPT-6 Luna, with the same ranges for Standard Business; Fast mode draws on included usage at 2.5x the Standard rate and Ultrafast at 8x.[32] The page notes that a turn already running when the limit hits may continue, subject to fair use limits.[32] Extra usage is sold as credits. Credit purchases launched on October 30, 2025, when OpenAI sold packs of 1,000 credits for $40 to Plus and Pro users; credits are consumed only after plan usage runs out and are priced per million tokens on a published rate card.[37][32][38] As of October 2026 the help center says purchase amounts and prices vary by account, region, and plan, credits are bought from Settings > Usage in ChatGPT or Usage & Billing in the Codex app, and they expire 12 months after purchase.[107] Workspace credits cover Business, Edu, and Enterprise, and an API key at API rates remains the third path.[32]

OpenAI's signature mechanic is the banked reset: a stored full usage reset credited to an account, redeemable whenever the user chooses from the desktop app, web, or mobile.[34][35][67] Using a full banked reset refreshes both the 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes the account's weekly reset date.[31] Reset credits carry a type and an expiration date in the Codex CLI, which added a confirmation step before redemption in July 2026.[36] The mechanic launched on June 11, 2026, when OpenAI's release notes said eligible Plus and Pro users would get one free banked reset and that banked resets were usable for 30 days after being granted; OpenAI has since granted banked resets to all accounts many times, including for a 7-million-user milestone on July 13, 2026 and the launch of [GPT-6 Sol](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt_6_sol) and Luna on September 22, 2026.[96][34][35][91] Since late August 2026, resets can also be bought: eligible Plus and Pro personal accounts can purchase an instant reset from usage settings or from an in-app offer after reaching the weekly limit. It immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage by pulling the normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding usage, and the new weekly period starts with the next request in Work or Codex, so the following automatic reset falls seven days after that request.[72] Paid resets are not offered on Free, Go, Business, Enterprise, or Edu plans, and OpenAI Support does not reset limits on request.[72][31] Inside the CLI, /status reports remaining limits.[32]

ChatGPT's chat interface went through its own cap era. [GPT-4](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpt-4) launched in March 2023 under a fluctuating cap that quickly settled at 25 messages per 3 hours, and OpenAI doubled it to 50 that July.[45] Caps later became model-specific, and by 2026 the official Plus page publishes no fixed numbers at all, promising only that caps may apply "especially during high demand."[46]

### Pro tiers and the Pro 200 reversal

At its DevDay event on September 29, 2026, OpenAI added Pro 500, a $500-per-month plan with "the highest included usage of the Pro plans" and exclusive access among Pro plans to [Ultrafast](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/ultrafast) mode, giving [ChatGPT Pro](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatgpt_pro) three tiers at $100, $200, and $500 a month.[96][94] Until then the Codex pricing page had described Pro as offering "5x or 20x higher rate limits than Plus"; the restructured page lists the three prices without usage multiples.[99][32] The same day OpenAI made Pro 200 "available for new subscriptions again" and said included usage allowances were changing.[96] Its help center explained that new Pro 200 subscriptions not eligible for grandfathering would get "a lower usage allowance than previously offered with Pro 200 to reflect our increasingly efficient models," while anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22, 2026 and 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29 could keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026 before moving to the lower one at the same $200 price.[95] OpenAI's help center described the change only as a lower allowance; a subscriber who posted on the OpenAI Developer Community forum on October 11 said OpenAI's email had described a move from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance for Codex and Work.[105]

On October 29, the day the grandfathering window was due to close, Sottiaux posted: "We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today," adding that OpenAI had "heard your kind feedback and won't be reducing usage limits for Pro 200."[100] OpenAI's release notes give the details: Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, the Pro 200 reduction "announced in our September 29 email" is canceled, and Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance had it doubled to match those who kept the higher one; the notes say Business Premium usage is increasing without giving a figure.[96][97] The help center adds that weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat are separate and did not change for Pro 100 or Pro 500, while Pro 200's lower weekly limit was raised to match the higher one; Plus usage is unchanged, existing subscribers get the new allowance without waiting for renewal, and "a larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks."[94] Pro plans kept their exemption from the five-hour limit.[32] Sottiaux also said OpenAI would "continue offering extended limits for dots for now" and that a user's [dot](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai_dots) would keep drawing on usage separate from the default allowance; OpenAI's dots help article describes those extended limits as applying for the first month after launch.[100][106] In a follow-up he wrote: "Graduating from The Reset Company to The Token Company."[101]

## Google Gemini

Google rebuilt the Gemini app's limits on May 17, 2026, replacing fixed daily prompt counts with a compute-based allowance that "refreshes every 5 hours" under a weekly cap.[47] How much a prompt consumes depends on its complexity, the model and features used, and the length of the chat, and paid tiers are defined as multipliers rather than absolute numbers: Google AI Plus doubles standard limits, AI Pro is 4x, and AI Ultra runs 5x or 20x above Pro depending on the subscription.[47] After user complaints, Google capped how much of a quota any single prompt can consume and stopped charging for failed requests.[48] The previous system, retired in May 2026, had published exact daily counts, such as 5 [Gemini 2.5 Pro](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gemini_2_5_pro) prompts per day free, 100 on AI Pro, and 500 on AI Ultra.[49]

For developers, the free Gemini CLI tier through a personal Google account allows 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 per day, rising to 1,500 per day on [Gemini Code Assist](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gemini_code_assist) Standard and 2,000 on Enterprise.[50] The CLI documentation names no reset clock, but Google's documented rule for the Gemini API is that daily request quotas reset at midnight Pacific Time.[50][51]

## GitHub Copilot

Copilot has the most deterministic reset schedule of the major tools: the calendar does the work. Premium request billing began on June 18, 2025, with monthly allowances (300 on Pro, 1,500 on Pro+) that reset on the first of each month at 00:00:00 UTC and a $0.04 overage price per extra request.[52] On June 1, 2026, GitHub replaced premium request units with token-based GitHub AI Credits, announced that April: 1 credit equals $0.01, individual plans include 1,500 (Pro), 7,000 (Pro+), or 20,000 (the new $100 Copilot Max) credits per month, and organizations get 1,900 (Business) or 3,900 (Enterprise) credits per user pooled at the billing-entity level, promotionally raised to 3,000 and 7,000 through September 1, 2026.[53][54][55][56] The allowance still resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, unused credits do not roll over, and code completions stay unlimited on paid plans.[54]

## Cursor

Cursor abandoned request counting on June 16, 2025, when its Pro plan swapped a 500-fast-requests-per-month quota for at least $20 of model inference at API prices each month plus unlimited access to its Auto model, and a $200 Ultra tier launched with 20x Pro's usage.[57][58] The switch confused enough users that Cursor published a clarification on July 4, 2025 and refunded surprise usage charged in the interim.[58] The mid-2026 lineup spans a free Hobby tier and paid Pro, Pro+, and Ultra plans whose included monthly usage scales with the plan price, so limits behave like a prepaid budget on a monthly billing cycle rather than a window that resets during the week.[68]

## API rate limits

API platforms enforce a different kind of limit. [Anthropic](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/anthropic) applies organization-level rate limits in three dimensions per model class: requests per minute, input tokens per minute, and output tokens per minute, alongside monthly spend caps that define the usage tiers, which in 2026 are named Start, Build, and Scale (capped at $500, $1,000, and $200,000 per month) plus negotiated Custom tiers.[59] Anthropic's limits use a token bucket that is "continuously replenished up to your maximum limit," so there is no fixed reset moment to wait for; exceeding a limit returns HTTP 429 with a retry-after header, and every response carries anthropic-ratelimit headers giving remaining capacity and an RFC 3339 replenishment time.[59] Cache reads do not count against input-token limits for most models, which makes [prompt caching](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/prompt_caching) a rate-limit lever as well as a cost one.[59]

[OpenAI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai) meters usage across several dimensions (requests per minute and day, tokens per minute and day, images per minute, and audio minutes for some streaming [audio models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/audio_models)), enforces whichever binds first, and attaches limits to organizations and projects rather than individual users.[60] Usage tiers advance automatically with cumulative spend, from Tier 1 at $5 paid up to Tier 5 at $1,000, raising monthly usage caps from $100 to $200,000, and responses carry x-ratelimit headers with remaining counts and reset times.[60] Google's developer quotas follow the daily-reset rule described above.[51]

## Resets outside the schedule

Routine renewals are only half the story. Providers now regularly reset windows early, for four recurring reasons: recovering from incidents that burned usage unfairly, celebrating launches and milestones, running promotions, and plain goodwill.

| Oct 10 to 27, 2026 | OpenAI | Ten further global resets in the series, posted as Days 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, and 23 (October 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, and 27, Pacific time); several landed the following morning[110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119] |

Promotions form the other half of the out-of-cycle catalogue:

| Promotion | Window | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Claude holiday promotion | Dec 25-31, 2025 | 2x usage including weekly caps for individual Pro and Max, with weekly caps reset at the start[26] |

## History and reception

Usage limits became a story in mid-2025. On July 17, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Anthropic had tightened Claude Code limits without telling anyone, and the complaint that stuck was not the caps but the silence: "Just be transparent. The lack of communication just causes people to lose confidence in them," one affected user told TechCrunch.[13] Eleven days later Anthropic announced weekly rate limits for Pro and Max, effective August 28, 2025, estimating they would touch "less than 5% of subscribers."[11][12] The company pointed to people running Claude Code "continuously in the background, 24/7," account sharing, and resale of access, and its announcement noted that one user had consumed "tens of thousands in model usage" on a $200 plan.[12][14] Launch estimates put Pro at 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 per week, with Max tiers proportionally higher plus separate Opus hours.[12] The Hacker News thread on the change drew over 600 points and 700 comments.[62]

Since then the pattern has been steady liberalization at the edges: higher quotas and the Opus cap's removal in November 2025, purchasable extra usage on both platforms, promotions that temporarily raise or double windows, and frequent goodwill resets.[16][8][37] Anthropic made part of its 2026 Claude Code boost permanent, raising standard weekly Claude Code limits by 25% from September 14, 2026, though it acknowledged this was a 17% cut from the promotional level then in effect.[74][75] The reset announcements themselves became a genre. OpenAI's Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux has announced dozens on X, enough that a third-party tracker, codex-resets.com, archives them and computes statistics: 69 reset events averaging 6.0 days apart as of October 30, 2026.[43][44] On October 4, 2026 he announced a public 28-day series, with Day 1 on October 5, promising that "each day we'll either ship one thing that is a clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users or ship a full reset"; by Day 23 (October 27) twelve of those days had brought a full or banked reset, each listed with its own post in the resets table above.[102] Other entries in the series changed metering, such as making auto-review safety checks free of plan usage on Day 2.[120][31] Over-consumption incidents recur on OpenAI's side too; a March 2026 status-page entry warned that Codex usage was being consumed faster than expected.[42] On October 20, 2026, after reports of usage draining faster than anticipated, Sottiaux said about 40,000 accounts had been charged against usage limits that did not match their selected plan, and that OpenAI had corrected the issue and would add credits for affected users.[108] Desktop monitors such as AI Gauge track Claude, Codex, and Copilot limits locally.[64] Anthropic publishes no equivalent feed of its one-off resets; AI Wiki maintains a manually reviewed, source-linked archive of them on the [limit reset tracker](/limit_resets), also available as open JSON data.

## Checking your reset time

No provider publishes a universal clock for subscription windows, so the account's own surfaces are authoritative.

| Product | Where to look | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Claude (web and apps) | Settings > Usage on claude.ai | Progress bars for the 5-hour session and weekly limits, with reset times[6] |
| Claude Code | /usage command, or the limit error text | Plan usage bars, consumption breakdown, and exact reset times[4][5] |
| Codex | chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, or /status in the CLI | Remaining 5-hour and weekly limits and credit balance[32][37] |
| GitHub Copilot | Billing and licensing settings | Credit usage against the monthly allowance; resets on the 1st at 00:00 UTC[54] |
| Gemini app | In-product notices | Warnings as the 5-hour or weekly allowance runs low[47] |
| Anthropic and OpenAI APIs | Response headers | Remaining requests and tokens, with reset timestamps[59][60] |
