Claude Pro is [Anthropic](/wiki/anthropic)'s individual paid subscription for its [Claude](/wiki/claude) AI assistant, priced at 20 US dollars per month (or about 17 dollars per month billed annually) and launched on September 7, 2023. It gives a subscriber at least five times the usage of the free tier per session, plus priority access during high-traffic periods and early access to new features. At launch Anthropic described the three core benefits as "5x more usage than our free tier provides, with the ability to send many more messages," "Priority access to Claude.ai during high-traffic periods," and "Early access to new features." [1] Pro is the entry point to Anthropic's paid consumer lineup, sitting below the higher-usage [Claude Max](/wiki/claude_max) plan and the seat-based [Claude for Work](/wiki/claude_for_work) plans aimed at organizations. [1][2][3]

## When was Claude Pro launched?

Anthropic released Claude.ai to the public in mid-2023 as a free chatbot, and within months it added a paid tier to help cover the cost of running the service. The company announced Claude Pro on September 7, 2023, rolling it out first to users in the United States and the United Kingdom. At launch the assistant ran on [Claude 2](/wiki/claude_2), Anthropic's flagship model at the time, and the company framed the subscription partly as a way to manage demand: it noted that Claude 2 was computationally expensive to run, so usage caps were necessary to keep serving a broad audience. [1][2][4]

The timing and price closely tracked the competition. Claude Pro launched at 20 US dollars per month (18 pounds per month in the UK), the same headline figure OpenAI charged for ChatGPT Plus, although the two services structured their message limits differently. Press coverage at the time noted that Pro subscribers could send at least 100 messages to Claude 2 in an eight-hour window before hitting a reset, a cap Anthropic presented as roughly five times what the free tier allowed. [1][2][4]

## How much does Claude Pro cost?

The standard price has stayed at 20 US dollars per month since launch, with local-currency pricing in supported regions; the original UK price was 18 pounds per month. Anthropic also offers annual billing, which works out to about 17 US dollars per month, billed once a year at 200 US dollars. Both options cover the same individual plan. The Pro subscription does not include programmatic access through the Claude Console: developers who call Claude through the application programming interface are billed separately at per-token API rates. [1][3][5]

## What does Claude Pro include over the free tier?

The free version of Claude lets anyone chat on the web, desktop, and mobile apps, generate code, and use a set of built-in capabilities. Pro keeps all of that and layers more on top. The three benefits Anthropic has emphasized since day one are higher usage, priority access during high-traffic periods, and early access to new features. [1][6]

Usage is the central distinction. Anthropic's help documentation states that Pro provides "at least five times the usage per session compared to our free service," with session limits that reset every five hours, though it stresses that the exact number of messages varies with conversation length, attached files, prior context, and which model is in use, so it avoids quoting a single fixed cap. [6] Beyond raw volume, the plan has accumulated features that the free tier either lacks or receives later. As of 2026 the Pro plan advertises unlimited Projects (the workspace feature described below), the Research capability, access to additional and more capable models, terminal access to [Claude Code](/wiki/claude_code), and connectors to services such as Microsoft 365 and Outlook. [3][6][7]

[Projects](/wiki/claude_projects) is one of the most-used Pro additions. Anthropic launched it on June 25, 2024, for Pro and Team subscribers, building on the release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet. A Project bundles related chats, documents, and custom instructions into a single workspace with a 200,000-token context window, which the company called "the equivalent of a 500-page book." [8] The June 2024 update was also when Anthropic surfaced Artifacts, a dedicated side panel that shows generated code, documents, and other content next to the conversation. [8][9]

## How does Claude Pro compare to Free, Max, Team, and Enterprise?

Claude Pro is the middle of Anthropic's consumer-facing ladder. Below it is the free plan; above it are the two Max tiers, introduced for heavy individual users; and separate from the individual track are the seat-based Team and Enterprise plans sold under the Claude for Work brand. The table summarizes the plans as Anthropic described them in 2026. Prices are in US dollars and usage figures are approximate, since Anthropic adjusts limits over time.

| Plan | Price (US dollars) | Audience | Usage relative to neighbors | Notable inclusions |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | 0 | New and casual users | Baseline | Web, desktop and mobile chat; web search; extended thinking; limited usage |
| Pro | 20 per month, or about 17 per month billed annually (200 per year) | Individuals | At least 5x the free tier per session | Everything in Free, plus Projects, Research, more models, Claude Code, added integrations |
| Max | From 100 per month (5x Pro) up to 200 per month (20x Pro) | Power users | 5x or 20x Pro | Higher output limits, priority access to new models and features |
| Team | 25 per seat monthly, or 20 per seat billed annually (standard seat) | Teams of 5 to 150 | Higher pooled limits | Central admin, SSO, collaboration, no default training on content |
| Enterprise | Custom, roughly 20 per seat plus usage at API rates | Large organizations | Negotiated | Team features plus SCIM, audit logs, advanced security and data controls |

[1][3][10]

The Max tiers were announced on April 9, 2025, after Anthropic said expanded access had become the top request from its most active subscribers. Max comes in two levels: 100 dollars per month for five times the rate limits of Pro (at least about 225 messages every 5 hours), and 200 dollars per month for twenty times (at least about 900 messages every 5 hours). Both add priority access to the newest models and features. Coverage at the time framed Max as Anthropic's answer to OpenAI's 200-dollar ChatGPT Pro tier, while noting that Anthropic, unlike OpenAI, did not offer a strictly unlimited plan. [10][11]

## How has Claude Pro changed over time?

The Pro plan has changed considerably since 2023, mostly by inheriting features that Anthropic shipped across the broader Claude product. After the September 2023 launch on Claude 2, subscribers moved through successive model generations, including the Claude 3 and Claude 4 families, as they were released. Projects and Artifacts arrived in June 2024, and over the following years Pro picked up web search, file creation with code execution, and integrations with outside services. [6][8]

A larger shift came with coding. Claude Code, Anthropic's command-line coding agent, became usable directly through a Pro or Max subscription rather than only through pay-as-you-go API billing. Anthropic's help documentation describes this as a single unified subscription that covers Claude on the web, desktop, and mobile apps as well as Claude Code in the terminal, with usage shared across both so that all activity counts against the same limits. [7]

That shared pool prompted changes to how usage is metered. On July 28, 2025, Anthropic said it would add new weekly rate limits for Pro and Max, effective in late August, estimating they would apply to "less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage." [12] The company kept its existing limits that reset every five hours and added two weekly caps that reset every seven days: one overall and one specific to its most advanced model, Claude Opus 4. Anthropic tied the move to a small number of users running Claude Code continuously in the background and to policy violations such as account sharing. For Pro, it described the weekly allowance as roughly 40 to 80 hours of Claude Code work with Sonnet 4, its mid-tier model. [12][13]

Anthropic has occasionally tested narrower changes to the plan's contents. In April 2026 it briefly removed Claude Code from the Pro tier for a small share of new signups, then reversed the change within about a day after subscribers objected, describing it as a limited experiment rather than a permanent cut. Claude Code remained part of Pro afterward. The episode reflected a recurring tension for the plan: Anthropic balances a fixed 20-dollar price against features, such as agentic coding, whose cost scales with how heavily people use them.
