**CORLEO** is Kawasaki Heavy Industries' four-legged, rideable off-road mobility concept. It combines motorcycle design with [quadruped robotics](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/quadruped_robot), uses rider weight shifts as control input, and proposes a hydrogen engine to generate electricity for its actuators. Kawasaki announced the concept on April 3, 2025, for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.[1]

CORLEO remains a development project. Kawasaki's August 2026 announcement described its gamescom exhibit as a full-scale mock-up that visitors could sit astride, not a commercial vehicle. The company targets a riding simulator for 2027 and commercialization for 2035.[2]

## Origins and development

The original announcement described CORLEO as a 2050 concept model for the Expo's Future City showcase. Its intended riding interface resembles horseback riding, with the machine responding to shifts in the rider's body rather than conventional motorcycle steering.[1]

On December 3, 2025, Kawasaki announced development toward commercialization and the creation of the SAFE ADVENTURE Business Development Team, reporting directly to the company president. The program also includes a proposed navigation system that accounts for weather, temperature, surface conditions, and wildlife when suggesting routes.[3]

| Date | Documented milestone |
| --- | --- |
| April 3, 2025 | Announcement of the concept exhibit for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, which opened on April 13.[1] |
| December 3, 2025 | Dedicated development organization announced, with Expo 2030 Riyadh as an intended deployment milestone.[3] |
| May 21, 2026 | Opening ceremony for Kawasaki Physical AI Center San Jose, whose mobility initiatives include CORLEO.[7][10] |
| August 19, 2026 | Announcement of a full-scale mock-up exhibition at gamescom, scheduled for August 26-30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.[2] |

## Vehicle design

Published vehicle descriptions give these proposed design elements, not certified production specifications.[4]

| Element | Stated design |
| --- | --- |
| Chassis articulation | A central swingarm permits relative vertical movement between front and rear leg mounts, absorbing vibration.[4] |
| Rider input | Handholds and automatically adjustable stirrups detect weight shifts.[4] |
| Feet | Split rubber hooves accommodate uneven surfaces and absorb landing impact.[4] |
| Fuel storage | Removable hydrogen-storage-alloy canisters housed toward the rear.[4] |
| Powertrain | Series hybrid: a turbocharged two-stroke hydrogen engine generates electricity for the leg and body actuators.[4] |

Published engine descriptions differ. The February 2026 engineering review specifies a 150 cc design with rated output of at least 15 kW; the SAFE ADVENTURE vehicle page retrieved in October 2026 lists 333 cc. Neither is a specification for a commercially released CORLEO.[4][5]

## Robotics and AI development

The engineering review outlines torque control, safety control, learning control, and [human-robot interaction](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/human_robot_interaction). It describes synchronized drive-shaft control with a cycle time below one millisecond and learning from machine behavior logs, progressing from [imitation learning](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/imitation_learning) to [reinforcement learning](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/reinforcement_learning).[5]

Kawasaki calls its intended rider-assistance approach adaptive shared control. The proposed system varies autonomous intervention with rider skill and corrects dangerous commands, including inputs that could lead toward a cliff. This is a design objective, not a published guarantee of accident prevention.[4]

The company describes model-based development using [simulation](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/simulation) to design and test the system before physical construction. Its development page reports thousands of virtual test runs involving falls, impacts, and extreme terrain, with AI learning intended to adapt motion to terrain and rider habits. These are descriptions of its development process, not measured public riding trials.[6]

The engineering review identifies unresolved needs in lightweight, durable materials, terrain sensing, fast signal processing, and interpretation of rider input. It also records ergonomics work with Kobe University's equestrian club using a clay mock-up. That evaluation concerned riding position and stirrup geometry, rather than dynamic off-road performance.[5]

### Physical AI partnerships

Kawasaki's May 22, 2026 announcement places CORLEO among the mobility platforms it intends to combine with [physical AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/physical_ai). The new San Jose center promotes collaboration with [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia), Analog Devices, Microsoft, and Fujitsu across healthcare, robotics, and mobility. The announcement does not identify a specific CORLEO processor or deployed AI model.[7]

In his opening remarks, Kawasaki president Yasuhiko Hashimoto described CORLEO as part of efforts to develop robot-based mobility for entertainment and activity industries. He framed the center's work around testing and improving real machines, with healthcare as the initial focus and expansion into industry and mobility.[10]

## Simulator and commercialization roadmap

Kawasaki's roadmap separates the simulator, a rideable development model, and the eventual commercial vehicle. Its announced milestones are targets, not completed releases.[8]

| Target year | Kawasaki's stated plan |
| --- | --- |
| 2027 | Complete a riding simulator as a CORLEO development platform, refining ride feel on a virtually reproduced test course.[3][8] |
| 2030 | Unveil a new model at Expo 2030 Riyadh, enter a phase of actual vehicle riding, and seek use as on-site mobility for security officers.[8] |
| 2035 | Commercialize a vehicle with walking, running, jumping, and off-road functions, principally for tourism and leisure.[8] |

The simulator concept includes remote riding, small-world experiences called CORLEO MINI, games, and a proposed mecha-esports format. These are envisaged applications, not confirmations of shipping products or supported commercial game integrations.[9]

The mock-up exhibitions and virtual development work should therefore be distinguished from the roadmap's future rideable model. Walking, running, jumping, and autonomous hazard intervention remain stated development aims in the published material.[2][5][8]
