**Marketing ChatGPT Plugins** were a now-deprecated group of third-party extensions for [ChatGPT](/wiki/chatgpt) that helped marketers research audiences, draft content, build websites, and connect ChatGPT to existing martech stacks. They are historical: [OpenAI](/wiki/openai) ran ChatGPT plugins as a beta from March 23, 2023, disabled new plugin conversations on March 19, 2024, and permanently ended all plugin conversations on April 9, 2024, replacing the program with custom GPTs and, later, built-in connectors, Actions, and the [Model Context Protocol](/wiki/model_context_protocol).[1][3][21][22] Marketing was one of the most populated filters in the plugin store, with at least two dozen entries that contemporary writeups recommended out of the roughly one thousand plugins that existed at the store's peak.[3][4] The category overlapped with the narrower [advertising](/wiki/advertising_chatgpt_plugins), [SEO](/wiki/seo_chatgpt_plugins), and [social media](/wiki/social_media_chatgpt_plugins) categories, and several plugins appeared under more than one filter at the same time.

## When were marketing ChatGPT plugins available?

Marketing ChatGPT plugins were available from May 2023, when the plugin store opened broadly to [ChatGPT](/wiki/chatgpt) Plus subscribers, until April 9, 2024, when OpenAI shut the program down. OpenAI introduced the plugin protocol on March 23, 2023, with twelve third-party launch partners (Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, Kayak, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier) and three first-party plugins for browsing, code interpretation, and retrieval.[1][2] None of the launch partners were marketing tools per se, but several touched marketing in practice. Klarna's plugin returned curated product picks, Shopify exposed merchants' catalogs to ChatGPT, and Zapier opened the door to thousands of CRM, email, and analytics integrations.[11][12] Once the plugin store opened to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers in May 2023, dedicated marketing plugins began appearing weekly.

By the time the program closed, most marketing functions had migrated to [Custom GPTs](/wiki/custom_gpts) in the [GPT Store](/wiki/gpt_store), to apps calling the [GPT-4](/wiki/gpt-4) API directly, or to native AI inside platforms such as HubSpot, Shopify, and Klarna.

## What did marketing plugins do?

Marketing-category plugins covered five practical clusters of jobs:

* **Content drafting.** Generate blog posts, landing-page copy, newsletters, show notes, and product descriptions from a topic, a URL, or a brand voice description.
* **Audience and competitive research.** Pull data on a competitor's domain, paid-search history, organic ranking, or product catalog, and translate it into briefs and personas.
* **Marketing data integration.** Surface CRM, analytics, and campaign data from third-party platforms inside the chat window.
* **Workflow automation.** Trigger Zaps, send Slack messages, push records into HubSpot or Salesforce, and route ChatGPT outputs into existing tools.
* **Asset and website production.** Generate diagrams, memes, QR codes, short videos, voiceovers, and full marketing websites without leaving the chat.

Unlike the strict [advertising](/wiki/advertising_chatgpt_plugins) category, the marketing category was fuzzy. Search Engine Journal's mid-2023 round-up identified twenty-five plugins that marketing teams were actively recommending.[4] Other industry lists from the same period reached similar counts (twenty-four to twenty-six entries) using slightly different boundaries.[5][6]

Each entry was confirmed against the developer's own listing, an archived plugin manifest, or contemporaneous trade-press coverage. Plugins that were primarily SEO, paid-search, or general-utility tools are listed under the related categories rather than here, even when marketers used them.

### Speedy Marketing

Speedy Marketing, by SpeedyBrand, was one of the highest-profile content plugins in the marketing filter. The archived plugin manifest at `api.speedybrand.io/.well-known/ai-plugin.json` lists the human-readable name as "Speedy Marketing" and the model-facing description as a tool for generating an SEO blog and social media post for a website.[7] The plugin asked for a website URL, then crawled the site to learn the brand's products and tone before drafting blog posts and short-form social copy in that voice. SpeedyBrand pitched the plugin at Shopify stores, ecommerce websites, and small businesses, and the company published step-by-step activation guides during summer 2023.[8]

### ChatSpot

ChatSpot was developed by HubSpot under the direction of the company's chief technology officer, Dharmesh Shah. It was first announced on March 6, 2023, as a standalone alpha web product, then released as a ChatGPT plugin once the plugin protocol opened.[9][10] Inside ChatGPT it gave marketers natural-language access to HubSpot CRM data, search marketing data, company research, competitive analysis, and domain information. ChatSpot was free to use but required a HubSpot account. Practical workflows included pulling a contact segment definition, generating a domain summary for a prospect, requesting suggested keywords for a product page, and asking for a competitive scan before a campaign launch.

### Zapier

Zapier was a launch partner on March 23, 2023, and remained one of the most widely installed plugins for marketing teams throughout the beta.[1] It gave ChatGPT access to thousands of actions across more than five thousand apps, including HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Google Sheets, Gmail, and Slack. Marketers used it to log new leads, send outreach emails, post campaign updates to Slack, or move records between tools. Zapier published a help-center notice in early 2024 confirming that new conversations using its ChatGPT plugin would be disabled on March 1, 2024, ahead of OpenAI's April 9, 2024 cutoff.[13]

### Klarna Shopping and Shopify

Klarna and Shopify were launch partners on March 23, 2023.[1] Klarna's plugin returned curated product recommendations with links into the Klarna search and compare tool, paired with the company's spring 2023 ads-manager rollout.[11][12] Marketing teams running ecommerce ad budgets used the plugin as a soft-discovery surface for products inside Klarna's network. Shopify's plugin let ChatGPT search products across Shopify-powered stores, which marketers used for catalog research on competitors' stores and as a recommendation interface for their own storefronts.

### Asset production plugins

A second cluster of marketing plugins focused on generating ready-to-publish creative. B12 AI Websites generated full marketing sites with scheduling and payments built in. Visla and Video AI by InVideo turned text prompts into short videos with stock footage and voiceover, used by social and content teams.[18] Speechki produced narrated audio from text. Show Me Diagrams generated inline diagrams that planners pasted into briefs and decks.

## How did marketers use plugins in practice?

Marketers chained plugins in three repeatable patterns.

* **Research, brief, draft.** Use AskYourPDF or a webpage reader to digest a research report or competitor article. Pipe the summary into ChatSpot for a domain or persona overlay. Then ask Speedy Marketing or the base [GPT-4](/wiki/gpt-4) model to draft a blog post, landing page, or email in a defined brand voice.
* **Content to distribution.** Draft a blog or product description, ask the model to spin out social variants for LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram, then use Visla, Video AI by InVideo, or Speechki to render a video or audio version. Outputs were often piped into a Zapier action that posted directly to a CMS or scheduling tool.
* **Data to action.** Ask ChatSpot or a Zapier action to pull a CRM segment, summarize it in plain English, then trigger a follow-up Zap that drops the segment into an email tool with a generated subject line.

All three workflows leaned heavily on [prompt engineering](/wiki/prompt_engineering). Plugin schemas were lean, and most of the value came from how the operator framed the conversation across multiple plugin calls.

## How did marketing relate to the neighboring plugin categories?

The marketing filter sat at the center of a cluster of overlapping categories. Boundaries were never enforced strictly, and many plugins were tagged twice or filed wherever the developer expected the most installs.

ChatSpot was tagged under both marketing and advertising. Speedy Marketing appeared under content marketing and SEO. Zapier was filed under marketing in most third-party round-ups but was technically a general-utility plugin. Counts ranged from twenty to thirty depending on the source.[4][5][6]

## Why were marketing ChatGPT plugins deprecated?

Marketing plugins inherited the same constraints that pushed [OpenAI](/wiki/openai) to wind the program down across every category, plus a few that bit harder in marketing. OpenAI framed the shutdown as a deliberate consolidation: in its February 23, 2024 notice it told users, "GPTs are the best way to customize ChatGPT, with more features and strong adoption from users and developers. We're winding down the plugins beta on April 9, as GPTs offer a better way to reach ChatGPT users."[22] By that point the plugin store held a little more than one thousand plugins, while the GPT Store already listed hundreds of thousands of GPTs.[3][15]

* **Three-plugin cap.** ChatGPT capped users at three active plugins per conversation. A marketer's stack of research, draft, and distribute frequently exceeded three plugins, forcing operators to swap plugins mid-conversation.
* **Discovery friction.** With more than one thousand plugins in the store, marketers struggled to find the right plugin for a job. Third-party directories such as plugin.surf launched in mid-2023 specifically to compensate for the store's weak browsing experience.[20]
* **Hallucinated facts.** Plugins that returned suggested keyword volumes, cost-per-click ranges, or competitor metrics sometimes invented numbers when the underlying API returned little data. This was a higher-stakes failure mode in marketing because operators acted on those numbers in budget and brief decisions.
* **Limited write-back.** Most plugins were read oriented. Marketers could pull data from HubSpot, Klarna, Shopify, or a competitor URL, but pushing a campaign live or updating a CRM record usually required a separate Zapier action or a manual paste.
* **Strategic shift to GPTs.** Once Custom GPTs and the GPT Store launched, OpenAI consolidated the plugin and assistant experiences. Most marketing-plugin developers rebuilt as GPTs or moved behind their own apps using the [GPT-4](/wiki/gpt-4) API.[14][15]

## What replaced marketing ChatGPT plugins?

After the plugin shutdown on April 9, 2024, the marketing surface migrated along several tracks, and the underlying tool-calling mechanism kept evolving after the plugins beta closed.

* **Custom GPTs and Actions.** [Custom GPTs](/wiki/custom_gpts) in the [GPT Store](/wiki/gpt_store) replicated nearly every plugin feature through the Actions framework, which mapped onto the plugin manifest plus OpenAPI pattern.[14][15] Speedy Marketing, ChatSpot, Zapier, and Visla shipped GPT or hybrid web-plus-GPT replacements.
* **Connectors and the Model Context Protocol.** OpenAI later added built-in connectors and adopted the [Model Context Protocol](/wiki/model_context_protocol) (MCP), an open standard for wiring tools and data sources into the model. Full MCP support reached ChatGPT in 2025, letting developers register read-and-write connectors directly in a chat; in December 2025 OpenAI renamed connectors to apps.[23][24] This gave marketers a far more capable equivalent of the original plugin connection point, with both retrieval and write-back.
* **Native martech AI.** Platforms that previously relied on plugins shipped their own first-party AI. HubSpot consolidated ChatSpot's capabilities into Breeze and HubSpot AI, Shopify expanded Sidekick and Magic, and Klarna built more of its AI assistant work into its own apps.
* **Direct API integrations.** Larger marketing teams shifted to bespoke applications that called the OpenAI API directly through the [large language model](/wiki/large_language_model) endpoints. This pattern allowed tighter control over prompts, retrieval, and brand-voice tuning, and became the dominant production pattern for AI-assisted marketing content by the second half of 2024.

## What was the historical significance of marketing ChatGPT plugins?

Marketing-category plugins were the first general-purpose chat extensions that mainstream marketing teams could install and use without writing code. They demonstrated several patterns (URL-to-content, CRM in chat, chat-to-Zap workflow) that became the default shape of AI marketing assistants over the following two years. The category never reached the polish of the systems that replaced it, but it shaped the playbooks that GPTs, native martech AI, connectors, and standalone marketing apps later built on.
