**Matic** is a camera-based robot vacuum and mop made by Matic Robots, Inc., a robotics company in Mountain View, California. The robot is the company's eponymous flagship product, so this article covers both the device and its maker. Its distinctive design puts the water tank, disposable wet-and-dry waste bag, computing hardware, and mop-cleaning mechanism on the robot rather than in a large service dock.[1][3]

Matic Robots was founded in 2017 by Navneet Dalal and Mehul Nariyawala. Both founders had worked at Google or Nest, and they had previously co-founded the gesture-recognition company Flutter. Matic, then known as Matician, disclosed the floor cleaner and opened preorders in November 2023 after friends-and-family use and limited field trials.[1] Production began in 2024, according to the company's own timeline. In January 2026 the company announced $60 million in new funding and said it had shipped more than 6,000 robots; those shipment and fleet-use totals are company-reported, not audited sales figures.[2]

The product is not app-free. It has official iOS and Android apps for mapping, schedules, no-go zones, remote control, support, and configuration. A physical button, smart-home connections, and the Matic Cues voice-and-gesture feature provide additional controls, but they do not replace the apps.[5][8][9]

## Company and development

Dalal was a Google research scientist, while Nariyawala had led product work for Nest's security-camera portfolio. They met at the computer-vision company Like.com and later built Flutter, which Google acquired. TechCrunch reported that Matic had raised $29.5 million by its 2023 unveiling, including a $24 million Series A. Its initial list price was $1,795, with a $1,495 preorder offer and an optional $15 monthly service plan. The report also cautioned that the robot had not yet entered general sale and that the planned March 2024 delivery date carried normal hardware-startup risk.[1]

Matic says that it designs, tests, assembles, and supports the robot in Mountain View using components sourced globally. This is more precise than describing every component as US-made. The company has continued to sell one floor-cleaning model while changing its behavior through frequent software releases and making some hardware revisions during warranty service.[2][3][16]

## Hardware and cleaning system

The publicly documented vision array contains five RGB plus infrared cameras. Two front cameras and two rear cameras form stereo pairs for depth estimation. A fifth upward-facing camera observes people and pointing gestures. Infrared illumination supports low-light operation. Matic describes this as a vision-first, lidar-free approach to [computer vision](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/computer_vision), but it has not published a complete bill of every internal state or safety sensor.[4]

An [NVIDIA Jetson](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_jetson) Orin Nano system-on-chip runs depth estimation, semantic classification, mapping, and control workloads on the robot. Matic says it selected the module after an earlier processor could no longer support its planned algorithms. The choice lets most perception and navigation run as [edge AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/edge_ai) rather than sending camera streams to a remote inference service.[4]

The dock supplies charging but does not empty waste, refill water, or wash the mop. Matic instead carries an approximately 1-liter disposable HEPA bag and its clean-water tank. The cleaning head has a main brush roll, a side brush, and a roller mop. During mopping, clean water is applied to the roller and a wringer sends dirty water into the same bag as dry debris. Gelling and antimicrobial material in the bag is intended to contain that mixed waste.[3][5][16][18]

A combined job is sequential rather than simultaneous. Matic generally vacuums a room before mopping it, and its cleaning planner divides work into interior, edge, and cabinet toe-kick rounds.[6] The 7.8-inch body cannot travel under ordinary beds and low couches, although the lower front head can reach partway beneath some edges. Current support states that the robot can cross floor transitions up to 2.25 cm; RTINGS cleared 2.5 cm in its own test, illustrating that thresholds depend on shape, approach, and test conditions.[7][17]

Some first-party specifications conflict. The product page says the 600 mL tank covers 800 square feet, while the support FAQ says 1,300 square feet. Support articles also say that Quick mode skips toe kicks and that toe-kick mopping is unavailable, while the March 2026 Stable 148 notes say Quick cleaning and toe-kick mopping were added. The fixed tank capacity is therefore better supported than a universal coverage figure, and toe-kick behavior should be treated as firmware-dependent.[3][5][6][7][9]

Matic gives current runtime estimates of 2.5 hours for vacuuming and 3 hours for mopping, followed by automatic charging and resumption when needed. It advertises sound levels of 55 dB while vacuuming, 52 dB while mopping, and 50 dB while patrolling. Those are manufacturer figures. Independent reviewers often called the robot quiet, but they did not all publish comparable acoustic methods.[3][5][15][16]

## Mapping, navigation, and controls

The robot uses stereo vision and [simultaneous localization and mapping](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/slam) to build a locally stored three-dimensional map. The app can display either a visual rendering or a simplified semantic view. Users can schedule rooms, draw a custom cleaning region, create no-go zones, manage several floor maps or robots, and drive the device with a virtual joystick. The current app requirements are iOS 17.2 or later and Android 14 or later.[4][5][8]

Wi-Fi is required for full functionality. On the home network, the phone and robot exchange maps and commands locally. Internet access is needed for software updates and control away from home, where the app uses a relayed tunnel. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, support documentation suggests a phone hotspot, with the limitation that it must remain active for app use.[5]

Control surfaces have changed over time. A November 2025 Verge review said that a user then had to start or schedule a clean through the app. By March 2026 the reviewer reported that the onboard button could start a full clean and that a Matter integration added Apple Home, Google Home, and Home Assistant control. At that date the Matter implementation was not yet certified, did not support every platform, and had no Alexa integration. It provided basic start, stop, pause, cleaning-mode, voice, and automation actions rather than the app's complete map editor.[14][16]

### Matic Cues

Stable release 172, dated August 12, 2026, introduced Matic Cues. It accepts spoken requests to clean named rooms, surface types, edges, toe kicks, or the whole home. It can also repeat a job, pause, dock, travel to a named room or sink, and follow a person. For spot cleaning, a user can say the wake phrase and point at a mess; the upward camera estimates the pointing direction and maps it to the floor.[9]

Matic attributes natural-language interpretation to [Gemini](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gemini) and advertises support for more than 70 languages and a voice range of up to 10 meters. These are vendor claims, not controlled benchmark results.[10] In an initial hands-on report after roughly one day of use, The Verge found the feature responsive but observed that pointing from standing height selected a wider area than pointing while crouched. The short trial supports that the feature existed and functioned for that reviewer, not a general reliability rate.[19]

Cues adds another way to issue commands, but app settings remain necessary to enable or disable it and to manage maps, room names, privacy choices, and other robot behavior. Claims that the Cues launch made Matic an app-less product are therefore incorrect.[8][9][10]

## Privacy and security

Core camera perception and mapping are designed to run locally. Matic's privacy policy says map data is streamed to the app over the home network and that the company does not collect audio or video except when a user explicitly authorizes support access. Users can separately opt in to device-usage and diagnostic logging. The policy also describes ordinary collection of account, transaction, app, website, device, location, and marketing data. Local camera processing does not mean that the service collects no personal information of any kind.[11]

Cues is a specific exception to broad statements that audio never leaves the home. The wake phrase is detected on the robot, and gesture data remains local. After the wake phrase, an opted-in user's spoken command is encrypted and sent to Google for interpretation. Matic says Gemini processes the request anonymously and does not store it. Cues and the microphones can be disabled in settings.[10][11][19]

For remote access, Matic published a routing toolkit called Portal; its repository says code in the crates directory is licensed under Apache 2.0. The repository describes a cloud router that matches a host and client through portal-specific signed tokens. Each endpoint uses TLS to the router, while the tunneled payload should use an additional encrypted layer so the router cannot inspect or modify it. Matic says the deployed phone-to-robot service includes that end-to-end protection and that its relay cannot read the payload.[12][13] The public repository does not include the production token service or establish how every deployed component is configured. None of the cited materials is an independent security audit of the complete product.

Safety claims also need qualification. Matic says its vision system gives people, children, and pets right of way and detects stairs. RTINGS reported that its purchased unit had no traditional cliff sensors and advised users to confirm behavior near open ledges. Matic's own setup directions place the dock at least three feet from stairs. These sources describe design choices and test observations, not a formal guarantee against falls, collisions, or missed hazards.[3][4][17]

## Price, availability, and maintenance

On August 15, 2026, Matic's US shop listed one robot and one dock at $1,245, advertised as a temporary reduction from $1,495 through September 9. A two-dock configuration was $1,343, and two robots with two docks were $2,490 during the promotion. Direct sales were limited to US shipping.[3]

The current configuration did not list a mandatory subscription for core operation. Optional add-ons included an Annual Bag Pass at $96 per robot per year and Matic Care at $144. The bag pass allowed repeat orders of up to 12 bags, while Matic Care extended warranty coverage to two years and added accidental-damage coverage. Standard direct purchases included a one-year limited warranty and a six-month return window under the company's terms.[3] This differs from the optional $15 monthly membership described at the 2023 preorder launch.[1]

The box includes five HEPA bags, two mop rolls, one main brush roll, and three side brushes. Matic estimates that a bag lasts one to four weeks, a mop roll one to three months, a brush roll about five months, and a side brush one to two months, all depending on home size and use.[3] Reviewers sometimes replaced bags much sooner, especially when collecting both liquid and debris.[15][16][18]

## Independent testing and reception

Reviews have ranged from unusually enthusiastic to strongly critical. In May 2025, WIRED's Adrienne So gave Matic 10/10 after testing it at home. She praised navigation, mapping, the app, low noise, and the combined wet-and-dry bag, while reporting that her household could fill a bag in about three days and that small Lego pieces could still be collected.[15] WIRED's article says the robot has six cameras, but current Matic hardware documentation, The Verge, RTINGS, and Vacuum Wars all identify five. This article follows the better-supported current count.[4][16][17][18]

The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy gave the product 9/10 in November 2025 after six months of household testing. In that home it became stuck twice, but edge cleaning was inconsistent, bags sometimes lasted only four days, and sequential vacuuming and mopping could take more than five hours for the reviewer's downstairs area. The reviewer also had an early unit replaced after a hardware issue. Her positive overall judgment is a documented individual result, not a universal performance fact.[16]

RTINGS bought the white retail model, published its review on April 1, 2026, and updated it to Test Bench 1.1 on July 27. It found strong obstacle avoidance and threshold handling, but poor or unreliable debris, pet-hair, edge, and stain cleaning. Its testers also encountered navigation cases where the app recognized a missed area but the robot did not return to it.[17]

Vacuum Wars separately bought a unit and tested it for several weeks. Its bench measured 8.11 kPa maximum suction and 35 CFM airflow. In its own fixtures, the robot picked up all flattened 2.5-inch pet hair and showed 7 percent wrap in a 7-inch hair test. Other results were weaker: it avoided 14 of 24 standardized obstacles against a comparison average of 17, moved at 0.52 square meter per minute against a 0.75 average, and took 227 minutes on a floor plan that comparison robots completed in about an hour. The outlet also noticed odor from the wet-and-dry bag after about a week.[18]

RTINGS and Vacuum Wars therefore reached sharply different conclusions about some cleaning and obstacle behavior. They used different debris, floor plans, modes, firmware dates, scoring systems, and one purchased unit each. WIRED and The Verge used longer but less standardized household trials. Matic also ships frequent over-the-air changes. Review date, software version, and test method are necessary context, and no single result establishes how every unit will perform in every home.[9][15][16][17][18]
