## What is the 4NE-1?

The 4NE-1 is NEURA Robotics' flagship cognitive humanoid robot, a bipedal, human-scale machine that NEURA says can perceive its surroundings, make decisions, and learn from experience rather than only running fixed, pre-programmed motions. NEURA positions it as a general-purpose worker for both industry and the home, able to operate alongside people without the protective fencing used around conventional [industrial robots](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/industrial_robot).[7] The "for anyone" name encodes the company's ambition to move humanoid robots out of factories and into ordinary workplaces and households.

The robot combines human-like mobility with [tactile sensing](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tactile_sensing) through a sensor skin, 360-degree perception, and onboard AI in one platform.[4] When NEURA opened reservations at CES 2026, RoboHorizon described it as one of the first Western companies to put its humanoids up for direct online sale.[3]

## Who makes the 4NE-1?

The 4NE-1 is made by NEURA Robotics GmbH, which David Reger founded on March 26, 2019, as Han's Robot Germany GmbH. The company rebranded as NEURA Robotics in November 2020 and announced its first products, including the LARA [collaborative robot](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/collaborative_robot) arm, at the same time.[1] Before NEURA, Reger built up the robotics division of the Swiss company Mabi AG.[1] In a podcast interview he said he had led three other companies that he spun off for a Swiss family, including a robotics company, a 3D printing company, and an automation company, and that the difficulty of using his own robots led him to cognitive robotics.[8]

NEURA describes its approach as "cognitive robotics": machines that can see, hear, and feel, and that learn from their environment.[9] The company frames its mission around labor shortages and aging populations.[10] Reger has described the field in sweeping terms: "Cognitive robotics is the next technological revolution - and it is happening right here and now."[11]

The MAiRA cognitive cobot followed LARA in 2021; NEURA markets it as the world's first commercially available cognitive robot.[1][12] The company reported more than 300 employees in January 2025 and around 600 in June 2025.[13][7] The acquisition of ek robotics in October 2025 added more than 300 more, and NEURA said it then employed more than 700 people.[14][15] NEURA's company page now lists more than 1,500 team members from more than 45 countries.[10]

### How is NEURA Robotics funded and valued?

NEURA raised EUR 120 million (about USD 123 million) in a Series B round announced on January 15, 2025, led by Lingotto Investment Management. At the time the company reported an order book of about EUR 1 billion.[13][16]

| Date | Round | Amount | Key investors | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2023 | Series A | USD 55 million | Lingotto, Vsquared Ventures, Primepulse, HV Capital | Reported by TechCrunch; NEURA's company page puts the full Series A at EUR 66 million, including USD 16 million from InterAlpen Partners[17][10] |
| January 2025 | Series B | EUR 120 million (about USD 123 million) | Lingotto Investment Management (lead), BlueCrest Capital Management, Volvo Cars Tech Fund, InterAlpen Partners, Vsquared Ventures, HV Capital, Delta Electronics, C4 Ventures, L-Bank, founder David Reger | Company reported EUR 1 billion in orders[13] |
| March 2026 | Reported round | About EUR 1 billion (about USD 1.2 billion) | Tether (reported backer) | Bloomberg reported a valuation of about EUR 4 billion[18][19] |
| June 2026 | Series C | Up to USD 1.4 billion | Tether Investments (lead), with strategic and financial investors | Announced June 10, 2026[20][1] |

The Tether talks first surfaced in November 2025, when the Financial Times reported that the stablecoin issuer was in talks to lead a EUR 1 billion round valuing NEURA at EUR 8 billion to EUR 10 billion.[21] Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that the round would instead value the company at about EUR 4 billion.[18] On June 10, 2026, Tether Investments announced that it was leading NEURA's Series C of up to USD 1.4 billion. As part of the deal, NEURA plans to integrate Tether's Wallet Development Kit into its robots and to test and deploy Tether's QVAC edge AI runtime in the Neuraverse.[20]

### Concept and first generation (2022)

NEURA presented the 4NE-1 concept at Automatica 2022, extending the company beyond collaborative robot arms into full humanoid systems.[1] Robotics 24/7 reported in November 2022 that the humanoid was 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) tall, weighed about 60 kg (132 lb), and could carry 20 kg (44 lb), according to Reger, and that its AI could recognize different voices and emotions and take commands in multiple languages and by gesture.[22]

### Functional prototype and demonstrations (2024)

In July 2024, NEURA released video footage of the 4NE-1 sorting objects, moving packages, chopping vegetables, and ironing clothing. Interesting Engineering noted that the video consisted of edited segments and that the conditions under which the robot performed the tasks had not been made public; New Atlas wrote that it was not clear whether [teleoperation](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/teleoperation) was involved.[2][23] The prototype was reported at 1.8 m and 80 kg, with a top speed of 3 km/h (1.8 mph) and a carrying capacity of 15 kg (33 lb).[2][23]

At the same time, New Atlas reported that NEURA's robots would benefit from early access to NVIDIA's Humanoid Robot Developer Program and that NEURA's partners and customers would gain access to NVIDIA's Project GR00T foundation model from September 2024.[23] In March 2025, NVIDIA listed NEURA among the humanoid developers with early access to [Isaac GR00T](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/isaac_gr00t) N1, alongside [Agility Robotics](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/agility_robotics), [Boston Dynamics](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/boston_dynamics), and Mentee Robotics.[24]

Also in 2024, NEURA moved production from China to Germany (in February) and partnered with Omron Robotics and Safety Technologies (in April).[16]

### Third generation and Gen 3.5 (2025-2026)

The third generation of the 4NE-1 premiered at Automatica 2025 in Munich in June 2025, alongside the market launch of the MiPA household and service robot and the Neuraverse software ecosystem.[7] NEURA said the Gen 3 design included:

- An intelligent dual-battery system for uninterrupted 24/7 operation
- Joint technology able to lift up to 100 kg (220 lb)
- Fine-motor, learning-capable [dexterous hands](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/dexterous_hand)
- The patented NEURA Omnisensor, which distinguishes people from objects
- An "artificial skin" that detects touch just before physical contact, improving the safety and precision of [human-robot interaction](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/human_robot_interaction)[7][11]

Computer&Automation reported that the robot lifts up to 100 kg using the force in its knees and joints and achieves a lifting force of 10 kg at the hands, and that first deliveries were planned for 2025.[25]

At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, NEURA showed the next version, designed in collaboration with Studio F.A. Porsche.[26] RoboHorizon reported it as the 4NE-1 Gen 3.5, with a new water-cooling system and an NVIDIA Thor T5000 processor. Customers could secure a unit with a fully refundable EUR 100 deposit, and Reger said in a booth interview that the first Gen 3.5 units would begin shipping as early as June 2026.[3] NEURA's own reservation page gives a later date: it says 4NE1 Gen 3.5 is expected to be available at the end of 2026.[5]

Alongside the full-sized robot, NEURA introduced the **4NE-1 Mini** at CES 2026. It stands 132 cm (4 ft 4 in) tall, weighs 36 kg (79 lb), and has 25 degrees of freedom, a 3 kg payload, and about 2.5 hours of active battery life. RoboHorizon described it as the "Western world's answer" to affordable humanoids, priced in the same range as importing a [Unitree G1](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/unitree_g1) from China, and Reger said the Mini would ship from April 2026.[3] NEURA sells it in two versions: a Standard model at an estimated EUR 19,999 for education, voice interaction, and entertainment, and a Pro model at EUR 29,999 that adds 12-DoF dexterous hands, a C++ SDK, digital-twin access, and teleoperation. Both use the same refundable EUR 100 reservation.[27]

### Fourth generation and TUM RoboGym (October 2026)

On October 22, 2026, NEURA unveiled 4NE1 Gen 4 at the opening of the TUM RoboGym powered by NEURA at LabCampus near Munich Airport. NEURA said the robot was already operating at the RoboGym and its NEURA Gyms, was appearing at NVIDIA's GTC conference in Berlin, and was being prepared for series production.[6]

According to NEURA, Gen 4 has a slimmer body with a black textile outer layer and is 20% lighter than the previous generation. The company reported improved hands for more precise gripping and Smart Limbs, which put reflex functions inside individual limbs so they can respond independently. The announcement gives no absolute mass in kilograms or customer delivery date.[6]

Gen 4 runs on Neuron AI, NEURA's Perception-Language-Action model. The company describes this model as combining 3D vision, tactile and force data, audio, robot state and language with memory, with inference running locally on the robot.[28][29]

The RoboGym provides a training environment for this work. TUM MIRMI describes the jointly operated facility as covering 2,300 square meters, where humanoids and other robots practice tasks such as folding boxes, assembling components and using tools.[30] NEURA says its training infrastructure combines physical robot data, human demonstrations and simulation, with learned skills shared through the Neuraverse.[6]

## What are the 4NE-1 specifications?

### Physical design

The 4NE-1 Gen 3.5 stands 180 cm (5 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 80 kg (176 lb), roughly human proportions that let it work in spaces built for people. NEURA's datasheet gives 55 degrees of freedom and 12 degrees of freedom per hand.[4] BotInfo, a third-party spec listing, gives a much lower figure of "25+" degrees of freedom, so published counts depend on the source.[31] The datasheet rates arm payload at 20 kg, notes that payload depends on load position, end effector and configuration, and says leg-supported configurations can carry up to 100 kg; NEURA's current product page, which now presents Gen 4, gives a payload of 10-20 kg.[4][29]

The Gen 3.5 is delivered with integrated high-dexterity hands, a battery and a charging station; specialized or third-party end effectors are not included.[5] The forearms are exchangeable, so operators can swap [end effectors](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/end_effector) for a given task, and the robot supports remote operation.[29][2] NEURA also offers dedicated variants, including versions on wheels for industrial floors and versions with a seventh axis for extended reach.[29]

### Sensor systems

NEURA treats safety in fenceless settings as the core of the design. Coverage of the third generation listed seven cameras, LiDAR, the NEURA Omnisensor and a microphone array; Porsche Consulting's magazine described the basic equipment as including seven 3D cameras.[25][32]

| Sensor | Description |
|---|---|
| 3D vision | Seven cameras; NEURA cites 360-degree perception[25][4] |
| [LiDAR](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/lidar) | Laser-based distance measurement for mapping and navigation[25] |
| [Force-torque sensors](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/force_torque_sensor) | Force-torque feedback for all moving joints[23] |
| NEURA Omnisensor | Patented touchless human detection; distinguishes people from objects and recognizes them; NEURA says it can detect people even when the sensor's view is obstructed[7][23] |
| Artificial skin | Patented sensor skin that detects touch just before physical contact[7] |
| Microphone array | Voice commands; multi-language voice interaction has been part of the design since the 2022 concept[25][22] |

The Omnisensor lets the robot adapt its behavior when a person enters its workspace, which NEURA says enables direct collaboration without protective fencing.[7] The datasheet notes that the safety human-detection sensors are optional and cost extra.[4]

### Computing and AI architecture

The 4NE-1 Gen 3.5 runs on an NVIDIA Thor T5000 processor.[3] NEURA says its robots are developed with NVIDIA's [Isaac Sim](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_isaac_sim) and [Isaac Lab](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/isaac_lab) simulation and learning platforms, are powered by the GR00T N1 model for cognition and task performance, and use NVIDIA Jetson for onboard computing.[7] At CES 2026, NEURA said all robots on its booth were powered by NVIDIA Isaac GR00T.[26] The product page lists a language model, [computer vision](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/computer_vision), and [reinforcement learning](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/reinforcement_learning) among the robot's AI capabilities.[29] For Gen 4, NEURA moved to its own Neuron AI model.[6]

NEURA also announced a collaboration with SAP and NVIDIA at Automatica 2025 that combines its robots with SAP's enterprise AI and NVIDIA's digital-twin technology.[7]

### Cooling and power

The Gen 3.5 model added a water-cooling system.[3] Power comes from two batteries mounted on the robot's back; NEURA describes this dual-battery system as allowing uninterrupted 24/7 operation.[25][7]

## What is the 4NE-1 used for?

### Industrial use

The main near-term market for the 4NE-1 is industrial manufacturing and logistics. NEURA's product page describes it working in unstructured industrial environments in logistics and manufacturing.[29] NEURA's partnership with [Bosch](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/bosch), announced in January 2026, targets the industrial scaling of humanoid robots, starting with data collection in Bosch facilities.[33]

Schaeffler, the German automotive and industrial supplier, announced in November 2025 that it would deploy NEURA humanoids in its global production network and integrate a mid-four-digit number of them into its production by 2035.[34]

### Household and domestic tasks

NEURA also markets the 4NE-1 for the home, describing it carrying objects, helping with routines, and responding to voice commands.[29] The July 2024 demonstration video showed the robot ironing and preparing food, and the "for anyone" name points to the goal of eventually placing these robots in ordinary homes.[2] The MiPA robot is NEURA's dedicated household and service product.[7]

### Service and healthcare

NEURA lists healthcare among the industries it serves, and says the 4NE-1's fine-motor hands make it suitable for service-sector work as well as industrial tasks.[29][7]

### Research and education

The 4NE-1 Mini is NEURA's main research and education model, designed for classrooms, labs, and prototyping spaces, with a Python SDK and ROS 2 interface.[27]

## How is the 4NE-1 manufactured? (NEURA Hive)

To produce the 4NE-1 at scale, NEURA developed a manufacturing method called the "NEURA Hive". Like a beehive, several robots arranged in a circle assemble components of the humanoid in a confined space, which NEURA describes as enabling rapid, fully automated production.[7][35] Reger has said the company's goal is to deliver five million robots by 2030 for industry, services, and the home.[7]

The January 2026 Bosch partnership is tied to that ramp. NEURA and Robert Bosch Robotics GmbH said they would jointly collect real-world work, movement, and environmental data in Bosch facilities using sensor suits, and co-develop AI-based software and user interfaces. Bosch also said the partnership includes the potential supply of robotic components and possible final assembly and motor production for humanoid robots.[33][36]

## What is the Neuraverse ecosystem?

The 4NE-1 connects to the Neuraverse, NEURA Robotics' software ecosystem launched at Automatica 2025. NEURA compares it to an app store: it connects robots and makes it easier to develop and use robot applications.[37]

Key components of the Neuraverse include:

- **Operating system**: the Neuraverse is built around the NEURON OS operating system, supports [sensor fusion](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/sensor_fusion), and includes open APIs[37]
- **Marketplace**: NEURA said in January 2026 that the Neuraverse, then open to early-access partners, would soon let companies and developers publish, share, and sell robotic skills and applications; an early example was a joint welding system with Abicor Binzel[26][11]
- **Shared learning**: when one robot masters a task, NEURA says that knowledge becomes available to the other robots on the network[26]
- **NEURA Gyms**: physical training centers where robots generate data from real application scenarios, which NEURA combines with synthetic data[7]

NEURA is working with NVIDIA on the NEURA Gyms.[7] NEURA says Gen 4 is already in operation at the TUM RoboGym and at the NEURA Gyms, where companies training tasks with it are among the first to work with the new generation.[6]

The 4NE-1's main points of difference are its rated payload of up to 100 kg in leg-supported configurations, its fenceless safety stack (Omnisensor plus artificial skin), its Porsche-designed body, the Neuraverse skill ecosystem, and a published price list, which is unusual among humanoid makers.[4][7][31]

NEURA is also one of the few European entrants in a field led by American and Chinese companies, and it has industrial partnerships with German firms such as Bosch and Schaeffler.[43][33][34]

## Awards and recognition

NEURA Robotics and its founder have received several German awards:

- **German Founders' Award (Deutscher Grunderpreis), "Rising Star" category** (September 2025): presented to NEURA in Berlin, with the laudatory speech given by Porsche AG board member Albrecht Reimold.[9][32]
- **German Innovation Award 2025, "Innovator of the Year"**: David Reger received this special prize in March 2025.[44]

## Future outlook

NEURA's stated goal is to deliver five million robots by 2030 across industrial, service, and domestic sectors, and its company page links the Series C to production toward "multi-million robots by 2030".[7][10] It reported an order book of about EUR 1 billion in January 2025, and of more than EUR 1 billion when it announced the Bosch partnership in January 2026.[13][33]

The NEURA Hive production system, the Bosch industrialization partnership, and the Schaeffler deployment plan are meant to support that ramp, while Gen 4 is being prepared for series production.[7][33][34][6] BotInfo, a robotics procurement-advisory site, has pointed out that NEURA's published specifications have shifted between generations and have not been independently verified in public demonstrations.[31]

## ELI5: 4NE-1 explained simply

The 4NE-1 is a robot shaped like a person. It is about as tall as a grown adult and is built by a German company called NEURA Robotics. Its name sounds like "for anyone" because the company wants robots that can help all kinds of people, not just big factories. It has cameras that let it see all the way around, a "skin" that notices when something is about to touch it so it does not bump into people, and a computer brain that lets it learn jobs like carrying boxes or ironing clothes. People can already reserve one, and the newest version, Gen 4, was shown in October 2026.
