**Ornn** (legally Ornn AI Inc., with an index subsidiary named Ornn Data LLC) is a New York startup that builds pricing and trading infrastructure for [GPU](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpu) compute. Its main product is the **Ornn Compute Price Index (OCPI)**, a family of daily benchmarks for the hourly rental price of NVIDIA data-center GPUs that Ornn says is built only from executed rental transactions. The company was founded in 2025 by Kush Bavaria (CEO) and Wayne Nelms (CTO), who met at MIT.[1][3][4][8]

OCPI is distributed on the Bloomberg Terminal and is the reference index for several derivatives products announced by other firms: planned GPU compute futures at Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), announced on May 19, 2026 and subject to regulatory approval; perpetual futures announced by Architect for its offshore AX exchange; prediction-market contracts on Kalshi; and an over-the-counter swap executed by FalconX in May 2026.[1][8][9][11][12] Ornn also runs Ornn Compute, a marketplace for reserving GPU capacity from [neocloud](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/neocloud) providers, which launched alongside a $33 million seed round led by a16z crypto in June 2026.[3][4][5]

Because Ornn both publishes a price index and sells GPU capacity priced against it, its market commentary is not neutral. Its own methodology describes this as a "structural conflict". Ornn figures quoted in this article are the company's own measurements or projections unless another source is named.[14][17]

## History

### Founding and first seed round

Bloomberg reported that Ornn was founded in 2025. Its X account was created in September 2025.[3][18] On October 28, 2025, Ornn AI announced the close of a $5.7 million seed round led by Crucible Ventures and Vine Ventures, with participation from Link Ventures, Box Group and angel investors. At that stage the company described itself as building a "Compute Exchange", which it hoped would become a US-regulated venue for cash-settled traditional and perpetual futures on compute hours. It said its exchange and clearing systems were being designed "under CFTC-aligned standards".[2] Data Center Dynamics later reported that the angel investors included people who had worked at OpenAI, Palantir, Blackstone and Coinbase.[11]

In a January 2026 press release issued with Architect, Ornn described its founders as "former quantitative traders and hardware engineers".[9] The a16z crypto investment note says Bavaria and Nelms met at MIT, and SiliconANGLE describes both as MIT graduates.[4][6]

### Index launch, Bloomberg listing and derivative partners

Ornn said in April 2026 that OCPI had then been live for six months, which places the start of the index in about October 2025. On April 2, 2026 it announced that OCPI was available on the Bloomberg Terminal. It also said that more than 400 data center operators, investors and AI companies were using its platform to track GPU prices.[8]

Before the ICE agreement, other firms had already built products on the index:

| Date | Partner | Product | Status in the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 21, 2026 | Architect Financial Technologies (AX exchange) | Perpetual futures on GPU rental prices and DRAM prices, referencing Ornn indices | Announced as launching "imminently", pending regulatory approval; by May 28, 2026 Architect was inviting customers to trade compute perpetual futures on AX, and it separately announced a planned US exchange, the American Innovation Exchange, pending regulatory review[9][10][30] |
| March 4, 2026 | Kalshi | Prediction-market contracts on hourly GPU prices, resolved with Ornn data | Live on Kalshi, per Data Center Dynamics[11] |
| May 19, 2026 | Intercontinental Exchange | Cash-settled GPU compute futures on OCPI | Announced, subject to regulatory approval[1] |
| May 27, 2026 | FalconX (dealer), Robert Leshner (counterparty) | OTC swap on the forward price of compute, referencing OCPI H100 | Executed, per FalconX[12] |

AX is run by Architect's Bermuda-regulated subsidiary and is aimed at non-US institutions. In an interview with The Block in January 2026, Bavaria said Ornn drew prices from several partner spot markets and that HydraHost, a GPU broker, was its largest data contributor. He also said Ornn had "already executed our first compute swap".[10] FalconX called its May 2026 trade "the first over-the-counter swap referencing the forward price of compute".[12] The two statements come from different firms and are not reconciled in either source.

### Ornn Compute and the $33 million round

On June 24, 2026, Ornn announced Ornn Compute and a $33 million seed round led by a16z crypto. Galaxy Ventures, Nordstar and SV Angel joined the round, and existing investors Vine Ventures, Crucible Capital, Link Ventures and Box Group also took part.[3][5] Bloomberg reported that a16z general partner Ali Yahya said in an interview that it was a16z's first investment in the development of a marketplace for compute.[3] SiliconANGLE reported that Ornn would use the money to hire and to expand its marketplace.[6]

In Ornn's description, Ornn Compute pools dedicated GPU capacity from several neoclouds on one platform. Buyers onboard once, and a secondary market allows transfers and on-demand sublets. Operators get demand from "a basket of tenants under one offtake contract" rather than underwriting each tenant separately.[5] Ornn's H100 index page advertises capacity on Ornn Compute "priced against this same settled index" and describes the company as one that "both prices compute and rents it".[15]

On June 16, 2026, Ornn launched the Ornn Token Price Indices (OTPI). These are daily indices of the realized cost of inference tokens from individual model developers, starting with [Anthropic](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/anthropic) and [OpenAI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/openai). Each developer's models are weighted by transacted token volume and the index is quoted in dollars per million tokens.[13]

### Regulatory position

Axios reported in July 2026 that Ornn operates under a de minimis exemption while larger firms work through regulatory approval. Bavaria told the outlet that the company does not work with Chinese AI labs.[7] On August 19, 2026, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) requested public comment on listing compute derivatives. Chairman Michael S. Selig said: "America cannot win the AI race without a robust derivatives market for compute." The request covers the size and liquidity of compute cash markets, manipulation concerns, customer protection and perpetual compute futures.[22]

## Ornn Compute Price Index

### Methodology

Ornn Data's published methodology, dated July 24, 2026, says the index work started with the "Ornn US H100 Index", described as "a representation of rental offers" for [NVIDIA H100](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_h100) GPUs in the United States. OCPI replaced this offer-based approach with one built on trade data.[14] The main features, as stated by Ornn, are:

| Aspect | What the methodology says |
|---|---|
| Scope | On-demand rentals only. Reserved, long-term and forward contracts are excluded and published separately as a GPU forward curve. |
| Inputs | Realized prices paid under active rentals, in USD per GPU-hour. Offered and indicative prices are excluded. |
| Counterparties | Compute must pass between two different verified counterparties, to keep wash trades out. GPU specifications, including CUDA version and VRAM, are checked at onboarding and at clearing. |
| Calculation | Volume-weighted, winsorized mean of transaction prices for each GPU type over a rolling one-hour window. The winsorization percentile is not published. |
| Publication | Hourly values to $0.001. Ornn's market pages add a daily settlement at 4:00 PM ET. |
| Contributors | Provider identities are not published. |
| Disruptions | The last value is carried forward. If that fails, publication is suspended. An oversight committee decides final settlement if no recent value is available at contract expiry. |
| Governance | An oversight committee of three to five members with an independent majority, which Ornn says it "is establishing". |
| Standards | Designed "with reference to" the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks, applied in a way Ornn calls proportionate to a new asset class. |

Sources: OCPI methodology and Ornn Data market pages.[14][15][16]

The methodology contains a conflict-of-interest disclosure. It says Ornn's affiliates "engage in commercial activities involving transactions in and delivery of physical GPU compute capacity". It also says that neither Ornn nor its affiliates trade or make markets in products indexed to OCPI, and that trades on Ornn-affiliated venues get no preferential treatment in the index. Ornn calls the common ownership "a structural conflict" and says it is "developing formal conflicts procedures" to manage it.[14]

### Series and published levels

Ornn's free data tier publishes settled values for four GPUs. As of September 26, 2026, the figures were:[16]

| Index | GPU | Architecture | Settled value, September 26, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| OCPI-H100 | H100 SXM 80 GB | [Hopper](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_hopper) | $2.54 per GPU-hour |
| OCPI-H200 | [H200](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_h200) 141 GB | Hopper | $4.78 per GPU-hour |
| OCPI-B200 | [B200](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_b200) 180 GB | [Blackwell](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_blackwell) | $8.04 per GPU-hour |
| OCPI-A100 | [A100](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_a100) SXM4 80 GB | Ampere | $0.95 per GPU-hour |

Earlier releases and partner announcements also refer to RTX 5090 and RTX-class series.[1][8] Ornn's homepage says OCPI also covers the B300, and its analytics hub lists RTX PRO 6000 and B300 rental indices behind a subscription.[16][26][27]

The published H100 series moves a lot from day to day. Ornn's page shows the H100 index at $3.05 on September 23, $2.92 on September 24, $2.85 on September 25 and $2.54 on September 26, 2026. That is a one-day fall of 10.9% and an 8.0% fall over 30 days. The three-month public window ranged from $2.45 to $3.17.[15] For comparison, Data Center Dynamics reported in March 2026 that Ornn's H100 index was then at $1.70.[11]

## ICE futures partnership

On May 19, 2026, ICE and Ornn announced plans for "a suite of GPU compute futures contracts" based on OCPI. According to the announcement:[1]

- The contracts will be denominated in US dollars and settled in cash.
- They may reference OCPI series for the H100, H200, B200 and RTX 5090, with more GPU types "as the market develops".
- They "will be launched subject to regulatory approval". The release gave no launch date.
- ICE said OCPI "will serve as the reference rate for cleared GPU compute derivatives", and the joint announcement called it "the first compute index to be built only from printed transactions".

Trabue Bland, ICE's senior vice president of futures markets, said Ornn's index was "a natural fit for futures markets". The release also quoted Jasper Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Hyperbolic Labs, who called his company "one of the largest GPU marketplaces" and described Ornn's index as "an important foundation" for the compute economy.[1] The Next Web reported that Ornn planned Asian-style settlement, in which contracts settle on the average of daily index values over the contract period rather than on one expiry-day price.[19]

In its June 24 funding announcement, Ornn wrote that "risk transfer is facilitated through partners like ICE, which clears futures and options contracts that reference OCPI directly."[5] ICE's own May announcement described the contracts as planned and subject to approval.[1] The competing CME product is covered in the wiki's [CME Compute Futures](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpu_compute_futures) article, which also compares ICE and the other announced venues.

## September 2026 "high-yield asset" post

On September 24, 2026, Ornn's X account published a post that began "An NVIDIA GPU is a high-yield asset", with four charts sourced to "data.ornn.com" and "Ornn index". All figures below are Ornn's own estimates and projections as of that date. None was independently verified.[18]

| Item (Ornn's claim) | H100 | B300 |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Bought on the secondary market in September 2025 for about $19,000 (chart: $19,380) | Bought in July 2026 for about $54,000 (chart: $54,041) |
| Resale value on September 24, 2026 | About $20,500 (chart: $20,584) | About $51,000 (chart: $51,250) |
| Net rent earned to date | About $13,500 (chart: $13,446) | About $14,000 (chart: $14,268) |
| Stated total and change | About $34,000, +76% in one year | About $65,500, +21% in under three months |
| Chart assumptions | 80% utilization, $0.30/hr operating cost | 80% utilization, $0.45/hr operating cost |
| Projection to September 2028 | About $63,500 (+227%): resale $14,319 plus net rent $49,074 | About $186,000 (+244%): resale $32,544 plus net rent $153,407 |

In the same post Ornn said resale prices had held within -5% to +7%. It said its H100 index was at $2.91 per hour, up 49% from a year earlier, and its "new B300 index" was at $11.32 per hour, up 66% from June. It put marketplace utilization at 87% for the H100 and 90% for the B300. The two-year figures were introduced as what "Ornn's forward curves predicts".[18]

The charts show how these totals are built. In both projections, the September 2028 total is the projected resale value plus all rent earned since purchase, net of operating cost: about three years of rent for the H100 (bought September 2025) and about 26 months for the B300 (bought July 2026), including the rent already earned by September 2026. The projected resale values ($14,319 for the H100 and $32,544 for the B300) are below the purchase prices, so the projected gains come from rental income, not from the hardware rising in value. The charts assume 80% utilization, while the post quotes 87% and 90% as current marketplace figures.[18]

Ornn's own research sets limits on how its forward curves should be read. A paper Ornn Data published on September 7, 2026 says its forward marks are "analyst-produced indicators, not executable quotes". It adds that "the marks do not establish individual-device survival, profitable operating life, residual value, or the appropriateness of an owner's accounting depreciation schedule." The paper also states that Ornn "offers GPU rentals through Ornn Compute" and that "these activities create a commercial interest in both the interpretation and adoption of its data."[17] Two days after the post, the OCPI-H100 settled at $2.54, below the $2.91 quoted in the post.[15]

## Market context

### GPU rental prices in 2026

Independent reports support the general picture of rising rental prices in 2026, though they measure different things. On April 2, 2026, [SemiAnalysis](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/semianalysis) reported that the price of 1-year H100 rental contracts had risen almost 40%, from a low of $1.70 per GPU-hour in October 2025 to $2.35 by March 2026. It said on-demand capacity was sold out across GPU types and linked the change to demand for agentic coding tools and open-weight models. It also noted that six months earlier many observers had expected GPU rental rates to keep falling steeply.[24] SemiAnalysis's index is built from surveys of contract prices and targets a different part of the market (1-year contracts) from OCPI's on-demand trades.[14][24]

On September 22, 2026, Seoul Economic Daily reported that [CoreWeave](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/coreweave) and [Nebius](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nebius) had raised GPU rental rates, and that Korean neocloud Vessl AI had raised its H100 hourly rate from $2.39 to $2.98. Citing Ornn, the paper said the H100 hourly cloud rental rate had risen 21.9% over the previous month, from $2.69 to $3.28.[25] The paper did not say which Ornn measure it used, and the $3.28 figure is above the $3.17 three-month high of Ornn's public OCPI-H100 settlement series.[15]

### Other compute derivatives

Ornn is one of several index providers working with exchanges on compute derivatives in 2026:

| Announced | Venue | Index provider | Product | Status in source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 12, 2026 (launch date set August 11, 2026) | CME Group (NYMEX) | Silicon Data | H100 and B200 rental index futures | Planned for October 5, 2026; on September 21, 2026 the CFTC extended its review to the end of November 9, 2026, and CME Clearing's revised advisory of September 25 lists the effective date as to be announced[19][20][28][29] |
| May 19, 2026 | ICE | Ornn (OCPI) | GPU compute futures | Subject to regulatory approval[1] |
| July 1, 2026 | ICE | NATIVX (COIL Index) | Energy-normalized compute futures | Expected later in 2026, subject to regulatory processes[21] |
| September 3, 2026 | Nodal Exchange | Compute Desk | GPU compute futures on blended rental indexes | Scheduled for 2026, subject to regulatory compliance[23] |

ICE is therefore working with two compute index providers, Ornn and NATIVX, on separate contracts.[1][21] Silicon Data's indices are covered in the same CME Compute Futures article. Broader rental price comparisons are in [cloud GPU pricing comparison](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cloud_gpu_pricing_comparison).

## Reception

Coverage of Ornn has mostly been about its funding and exchange partnerships. Bloomberg, Axios, SiliconANGLE and The Next Web all described it as part of a wider effort to trade compute like a commodity.[3][6][7][19] SiliconANGLE wrote that the ICE agreement added "legitimacy" to Ornn's services.[6] The Next Web placed it in a "two-horse race" between ICE and CME, with Architect and Kalshi as smaller entrants.[19]

Axios noted two limits of the comparison with oil. New generations of NVIDIA chips change the value of older ones, so "any benchmark has to chase a depreciating asset". And GPU capacity cannot be stored, which makes standard contracts harder to design.[7] SemiAnalysis made a related point about index design: many GPU indices are built from spot or on-demand data, while most rental volume trades on contracts of six months or longer.[24] OCPI covers on-demand rentals only.[14] The same SemiAnalysis report recalled that about six months earlier, financial analysts had criticized neoclouds and hyperscalers that depreciated GPUs over six years.[24] Ornn's September 2026 paper presents itself as a counter to the assumption that each new NVIDIA generation makes the previous one obsolete, while noting that its data do not establish whether any owner's depreciation schedule is appropriate.[17]
