Pony.ai Inc. is a Chinese autonomous driving company that develops Level 4 self-driving technology for robotaxis and freight trucks. The company was founded in December 2016 by James Peng (Peng Jun) and Tiancheng Lou (Lou Tiancheng), two former Baidu engineers, and it runs its business from headquarters in Guangzhou, China, and Fremont, California, with additional research centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Silicon Valley.[1][2][4] Its core product is a full-stack [autonomous driving](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_driving) system, marketed as a "virtual driver," that the company builds into passenger vehicles and trucks.[2]

Pony.ai operates one of the largest paid robotaxi services in China, running fully driverless commercial robotaxi service in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and it has expanded testing and commercial deployment into the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia.[1][4][10] The company is unusual among Chinese [autonomous vehicle](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_vehicle) developers for its dual public listing: it raised roughly $260 million in a November 2024 initial public offering on the Nasdaq (ticker PONY) and completed a secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (stock code 2026) in November 2025.[3][5]

Toyota is both a commercial partner and one of Pony.ai's largest shareholders, having invested $400 million in 2020 and later joining a robotaxi manufacturing joint venture with the company.[1][10] By late March 2026 Pony.ai operated about 1,446 vehicles and reported its first quarterly net profit for the fourth quarter of 2025, though that profit came largely from investment gains rather than core operations.[8]

## Founding and leadership

Pony.ai was founded in December 2016, initially in Silicon Valley, by James Peng and Tiancheng Lou, who had both previously worked at [Baidu](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/baidu) as software developers in its autonomous driving effort.[1][2] Peng serves as chief executive officer and Lou as chief technology officer.[1] The company quickly established a two-country structure, pairing a California engineering base in Fremont with rapidly growing operations in China, and by 2024 it employed roughly 1,300 people.[1]

The company organizes its work into three business lines: robotaxi, robotruck, and personally owned vehicles (POV), the last of which licenses advanced driver-assistance and intelligent-driving software to automakers for consumer cars.[2] Across all three lines Pony.ai reports having accumulated tens of millions of kilometers of autonomous road testing, citing more than 32 million kilometers (over 13 million miles) as of April 2024 and close to 40 million kilometers by the time of its US IPO filing in October 2024.[2][4]

## Autonomous driving technology

Pony.ai builds a Level 4 system, meaning the vehicle is designed to handle all driving within a defined operating area without a human driver.[1] The approach combines [LiDAR](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/lidar), cameras, and radar through [sensor fusion](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/sensor_fusion), paired with perception, prediction, and planning software.[2]

The clearest expression of this hardware strategy is the seventh-generation ("Gen-7") robotaxi platform, which entered commercial operation in November 2025 in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.[6] Rather than retrofitting research vehicles, the Gen-7 systems are built onto mass-production electric cars from two Chinese automakers: BAIC's Arcfox Alpha T5 SUV and GAC Aion's second-generation Aion V.[6] The design uses only automotive-grade components and is engineered for a service life of 600,000 kilometers.[6]

The roughly 70% reduction in the cost of the autonomous driving suite is central to Pony.ai's commercialization argument, because lower per-vehicle hardware cost is what allows a robotaxi to reach breakeven on fares. By late November 2025 the company reported that the Gen-7 vehicle had reached city-wide unit-economics breakeven in Guangzhou at an average of 23 completed daily orders per vehicle.[7]

## Robotaxi operations

Pony.ai's passenger service runs through its PonyPilot ride-hailing app, which had more than 220,000 registered users by the end of June 2024.[4] The company built its Chinese robotaxi business city by city, moving from licensed testing to fare-charging service to driverless operation. In April 2022 Beijing authorities granted Pony.ai and Baidu, operator of the [Apollo Go](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/apollo_go) robotaxi service, the first permits in China to run driverless robotaxi rides for the public on open roads, with a safety operator seated in the front passenger position rather than behind the wheel; the two companies reached the milestone together, and the rides were initially free of charge.[14]

By the time of its US listing in late 2024, Pony.ai ran about 250 robotaxis across Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai.[4][15] The fleet then grew quickly as Gen-7 vehicles rolled out: the company reported more than 720 robotaxis at its Hong Kong debut in early November 2025, 961 vehicles (including 667 Gen-7 units) by 25 November 2025, and about 1,446 vehicles by late March 2026.[5][7][8] Management set a target of more than 3,000 robotaxis across at least 20 cities during 2026, with close to half of that deployment planned for markets outside China.[8]

A significant part of Pony.ai's robotaxi manufacturing runs through [Toyota](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/toyota). In August 2023 Toyota, Pony.ai, and the GAC Toyota joint venture agreed to invest more than 1 billion yuan (about $140 million) to form a company that would mass-produce and operate robotaxis in China, building on Toyota-branded battery-electric vehicles.[10] At the time, roughly 200 of Pony.ai's robotaxis were based on Toyota models such as the Lexus RX450h and the Toyota Sienna.[10]

## Robotruck operations

Pony.ai entered autonomous trucking in 2018. By late 2025 it had accumulated more than 1 billion ton-kilometers of freight mileage with a fleet of roughly 200 trucks, and it reported about 190 robotrucks running in Beijing and Guangzhou around the time of its IPO.[11][15] In 2022 the company partnered with construction-equipment maker Sany Heavy Industry to work toward mass production of self-driving trucks, and by mid-2025 it was testing autonomous trucks on the Beijing-Tianjin port highway.[1]

In November 2025 Pony.ai introduced a fourth-generation autonomous truck lineup, developed jointly with Sany's truck arm and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor and slated for deployment in 2026.[11] The new trucks use only automotive-grade components, are designed for a service life of up to 20,000 hours or 1 million kilometers, and cut per-vehicle material cost by about 70% compared with the prior generation.[11] The company promotes a "1+4" platooning setup, in which one human-driven lead truck is followed by four autonomous trucks, and projects that the arrangement can reduce freight cost per kilometer by 29% while cutting per-vehicle carbon emissions by roughly 60 tons per year.[11]

## United States operations and safety record

Pony.ai operated an early engineering and testing base in California and was among the first companies to hold a driverless testing permit from the state Department of Motor Vehicles, running a small fleet of Hyundai Kona electric cars in the Fremont area.[2][12] In 2021 the company logged the third-highest number of autonomous test miles in California, behind [Waymo](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/waymo) and Cruise.[1]

The California operation also produced the company's most scrutinized safety episode. On 28 October 2021, one of Pony.ai's driverless vehicles struck a lane divider and a street sign while changing lanes in autonomous mode in Fremont; no other vehicles were involved and no one was injured.[12] The company had 10 Hyundai Kona vehicles registered under its driverless permit at the time.[12] Following the collision, the California DMV suspended Pony.ai's driverless testing permit in December 2021, the first such suspension the agency had issued.[1][12] In May 2022 the DMV also revoked the company's permit to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver, citing problems with how Pony.ai had monitored the driving records of its safety operators.[13] Pony.ai later resumed California testing with safety drivers.[1] The company continued to publish periodic safety reports and framed its Level 4 program around reducing collisions, but these US regulatory actions remain the clearest public marks on its safety record.[2][13]

## International expansion

Beyond China and the United States, Pony.ai has pursued a broad international rollout, often by pairing with local ride-hailing and mobility operators rather than launching its own consumer brand. It established automated-driving operations in Luxembourg as part of a European push,[4] signed a partnership with [Uber](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/uber) in May 2025 to deploy robotaxis in international markets,[16] and agreed to work with the European ride-hailing company Bolt in November 2025.[17]

During 2026 the company brought several of these efforts into live service. In April 2026 it launched what was described as Europe's first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia, working with Uber and the local operator Verne,[18] began driverless trials in Dubai ahead of a planned public fare-charging service later that year,[19] and received approval for an invite-only robotaxi service on a fixed route in the Punggol area of Singapore.[21] These deployments extended a footprint that already included testing and licensing activity in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.[1][4]

## Funding and investors

Pony.ai raised large private rounds through the late 2010s and early 2020s before turning to public markets. Its best-known backer is Toyota, whose $400 million investment in 2020 made it one of the company's largest shareholders.[1][4] In October 2023 the company confirmed a $100 million investment from Saudi Arabia's Neom megaproject, part of a broader push into the Middle East.[1][20]

## Nasdaq IPO and Hong Kong listing

Pony.ai filed for a US initial public offering in October 2024 and began trading on the Nasdaq on 27 November 2024 under the ticker PONY.[3][4] The company priced 20 million American depositary shares at $13 each, the top of an $11 to $13 range, raising $260 million from the public offering, and sold about $153 million in additional ordinary shares through concurrent private placements, bringing total proceeds to roughly $413 million.[3] That made it the largest US-listed initial public offering in the autonomous driving sector that year, at a valuation of just over $5 billion.[3] The debut was volatile: the stock opened at $15 but closed its first session at $12, down 7.69%, for a market capitalization of about $4.66 billion.[3] The listing followed a sharp reset of expectations, since Pony.ai had earlier targeted a valuation as high as $8 billion before cutting it to around $4 billion, and former Waymo chief executive John Krafcik publicly questioned the decision to pursue a US listing.[15]

Almost a year later, in early November 2025, Pony.ai completed a secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under stock code 2026, pricing shares at HK$139 and securing net proceeds of about HK$7.19 billion.[5] As with its Nasdaq debut, the first day was weak: the stock fell 13.96% to HK$119.60, leaving a market value near HK$51 billion.[5] The Hong Kong listing came at the same time as a similar move by rival [WeRide](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/weride), and both stocks declined on their debuts.[5]

## Financial performance

Pony.ai's reported revenue grew steadily but remained modest against its losses as it scaled. The company reported revenue of $68.4 million in 2022 and $71.9 million in 2023, with first-half 2024 revenue of $24.7 million, up 101% year over year.[4] For full-year 2025 revenue rose about 20% to roughly $90 million, while the annual net loss narrowed by 72% to $76.8 million.[8]

The company posted its first quarterly net profit in the fourth quarter of 2025, reporting net income of 528 million yuan ($75.5 million), though it attributed the result mainly to investment gains rather than to its robotaxi and robotruck operations.[8] Early results in 2026 showed rapid growth off a small base: first-quarter robotaxi revenue reached $8.6 million, up about 395% year over year, and the company raised its 2026 robotaxi revenue target to 3.5 times the 2025 level.[9] Pony.ai has said it expects sustained profitability only later in the decade, as fleet scale and the cheaper Gen-7 hardware improve per-vehicle economics.[1][7]
