RayNeo (雷鸟创新, Thunderbird Innovation) is a Chinese [augmented reality](/wiki/augmented_reality) and [AI glasses](/wiki/ai_glasses) maker founded in October 2021 and incubated by TCL Electronics (01070.HK), which calls it exactly that in its 2025 results announcement while disclosing no revenue, profit or shareholding for it [5][2]. The company sells three lines: the X series of all-in-one AI plus AR glasses built on full-colour MicroLED and diffractive [waveguide](/wiki/waveguide_display) optics, the Air and GT series of tethered birdbath and prism viewers that act as wearable screens, and the V series of camera-equipped AI glasses with no display at all. Its flagship, the X3 Pro, launched in China on 27 May 2025 at 8,999 RMB and sells internationally at $1,299 [9][1]. RayNeo raised more than 1 billion RMB in a round announced on 5 January 2026 whose investors included the venture arms of China Mobile and China Unicom, which the company called the first strategic entry by China's major telecom operators into smart glasses [4]. It leads several 2026 rankings, but each ranking counts a different set of products, and the numbers only make sense with the basket attached.

## Company and the TCL relationship

RayNeo was founded in October 2021 by Li Hongwei (李宏伟), who remains chief executive [5][10]. TCL Electronics' 2025 annual results announcement, published on 28 March 2026, puts RayNeo in its commentary on innovative businesses and calls it "RayNeo, incubated by the Company", crediting it with a 32% share of the PRC AI and AR glasses market in 2025, which its own footnote sources to CINNO Research, and a 35.4% share of online AR glasses sales volume, first in China's online omni-channel market for four consecutive years, which it sources to RUNTO [2]. That announcement gives RayNeo no revenue line, no profit line and no shareholding figure.

The distinction matters because English coverage routinely compresses it. RayNeo's own about page says "As a member of the TCL family, RayNeo supports the partnership as an Official Worldwide Olympic Partner", and then prints a separate "About TCL Electronics" paragraph rather than folding the two companies together [6]. The framing has also tightened over 2026: press releases in January and April described RayNeo itself as "the Official Worldwide Olympic Partner in the AR glasses category", while the July release rewrote that as a member of the TCL family "supporting its partnership" [7][3][8]. The practical evidence for separateness is the cap table. RayNeo raises its own outside equity, from CITIC Securities affiliates and from telecom operator funds, which a wholly owned division would not do [4][9].

RayNeo says its products are sold in more than 30 countries and regions with retail placement including Amazon and Best Buy in the United States [8]; its Chinese-language boilerplate from June 2026 says more than 25 countries and regions and puts cumulative users above 500,000 [5]. The company operates its own optical production, and describes itself as the only firm in the industry with full-chain in-house development and mass production of core optical solutions [5].

## Funding

| Date announced | Reported size | Named investors | Source quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-11-07 (reported) | Single C-round tranche, whole round possibly 800M RMB; 2025 C-round total described as approaching 1 billion RMB | Led by CITIC Goldstone (中信金石), with CITIC Securities Investment and an affiliated vehicle, all CITIC Securities subsidiaries | Chinese financial press [9] |
| 2026-01-05 | More than 1 billion RMB (US$143 million as converted by SCMP); RayNeo did not disclose the size at the time | Unicom Innovation Capital (China Unicom), CM Beijing Fund and CM Shanghai Fund (China Mobile), with CITIC Goldstone per Chinese media | SCMP, from RayNeo's statement [4] |
| 2026-04-01 (restated) | "Exceeding $140 million (approx. 1 billion RMB)", closed in Q1 2026 | "An investment group including CITIC Goldstone and strategic funds from industry giants China Mobile and China Unicom" | RayNeo press release [3] |

Who led the January 2026 round is not settled by any published account. SCMP lists the investors without naming a lead; RayNeo's own April 2026 release credits an investment group including CITIC Goldstone; and the November 2025 report names CITIC Goldstone as the lead of the earlier tranche [4][3][9]. Descriptions elsewhere that name a China Mobile vehicle as lead investor are not supported by these sources. RayNeo's statement that the deal "marks the first strategic entry of China's major telecommunications operators into the smart glasses sector" is the company's own characterisation, reported as such [4].

The money came with a strategic cooperation agreement rather than a pure financial stake. SCMP reported that the operators would supply "eSIM management, 5G-Advanced networks and content partnerships" [4]. Li told an interviewer the same day that the operators were preparing a subsidised distribution model, glasses bundled with a phone-bill top-up, modelled on how Chinese carriers seeded early smartphones, and that RayNeo would spend the money mainly on research in optics, spatial computing and glasses-specific AI models [10]. A sponsored 36Kr piece published the same day added that China Mobile's and China Unicom's funds had combined in the eyewear sector for the first time alongside CITIC Goldstone; it is branded content and should be read as such [11].

RMB prices are converted at roughly 7.15 RMB to the dollar, an approximate mid-2026 rate; where a source published its own conversion, that conversion is quoted instead. Dollar, euro and sterling figures are RayNeo's own list prices.

Two rows in the table are not products yet. The X3 Pro Project eSIM was described in RayNeo's own CES release as a "prototype" and a "concept", not a shipping SKU [7]. The iO was teased at the May 2026 launch event and previewed in a late-June video; it has no camera and a single-colour green display, with subtitles, teleprompter, reminders and an all-day note-taking feature [12][24]. Neither had gone on sale as of 2 August 2026. No product called V3 Pro appears in RayNeo's own material or in the Chinese coverage of its launches: the generation shipped as V3 and V3 Slim, and was succeeded by V4 [9][12].

The optics split the catalogue cleanly. The X series uses microLED light engines feeding diffractive waveguides, which is what lets the frames look roughly like glasses and see through to the world; the X3 Pro adds a 12 MP [Sony](/wiki/sony) IMX681 camera and a 245 mAh battery [13]. The Air and GT lines are what Counterpoint classifies as birdbath and flat-prism devices [17]: bigger, brighter and far cheaper per degree of field of view, but dependent on a USB-C host for both video and power, which is why they compete with [XREAL](/wiki/xreal) and Viture rather than with [Meta Ray-Ban Display](/wiki/meta_ray_ban_display). The V series has no display optics at all.

## Assistant and models

The X3 Pro runs a custom RayNeo AI OS, which Android Central described as effectively a custom Android build that accepts sideloaded apps [13]. RayNeo's product page lists the AI engine as [Gemini](/wiki/gemini), and pairs it with real-time translation, heads-up navigation, a to-do and memo assistant, and an app ecosystem [1]. RayNeo does not say where inference runs, and the assistant features it advertises are [Google](/wiki/google) cloud services.

Underneath the assistant, RayNeo says it is building glasses-specific models rather than only calling external ones. Li said in January 2026 that the company was training large and medium models aimed at long-lived memory and proactive interaction on-device [10]; the sponsored 36Kr piece from the same day says RayNeo built its glasses operating system and worked with [Alibaba](/wiki/alibaba) Cloud's [Tongyi Qianwen](/wiki/tongyi_qianwen) and with Google Gemini on glasses-oriented multimodal models [11]. Neither claim has been corroborated with a model card or a benchmark.

The V4 is the clearest published statement of how fast the assistant is meant to be: RayNeo claims a 0.2 second wake and a 2.1 second answer from the Snapdragon AR1 plus BES2800 pairing, with continuous conversation [12]. That is a vendor figure.

RayNeo hardware also carries [Qualcomm](/wiki/qualcomm)'s own AI demonstrations. At Mobile World Congress in March 2025 Qualcomm ran a personalised assistant across an X3 Pro and a Snapdragon 8 Elite reference phone, with the phone doing "a bulk of the computations" on llava-llama-3-8b plus retrieval over a personal knowledge base [14]. At AWE in June 2025 it ran a generative model entirely on an X3 Pro, using [Llama](/wiki/llama) 1B, which it called a world's first with "No phone. No cloud." [15].

## What silicon the X3 Pro runs

RayNeo's product page says only "Snapdragon AR1", without a generation [1]. Qualcomm's own material contradicts itself on the same page. The body of its 10 June 2025 blog says the AWE demonstration ran on "a pair of RayNeo X3 Pro smart glasses powered by Snapdragon technology", while the metadata on that page, its meta description and its Open Graph and Twitter descriptions, says "local AI inferencing on RayNeo X3 Pro smart glasses powered by Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1" [15]. Qualcomm's earlier blog of 29 May 2025 states plainly that Mobile World Congress attendees "could put on a pair of RayNeo X3 Pro smart glasses powered by a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processor" [14], and Android Central's month-long review reports the retail X3 Pro as running "Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform" [13]. TechInsights, which bought an X3 Pro on the Chinese market and took it apart, says in the public summary of its deep dive teardown, dated 5 November 2025, that the unit "is designed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1"; the full report itself is subscription-only [26].

Two readings fit the evidence and none of the sources choose between them: either the metadata is a stray description written against the AR1+ Gen 1 launch that shared the same blog post, or the demonstration unit differed from the retail product. What can be said is that the AR1+ claim appears only in machine-readable metadata, never in Qualcomm body copy, and that Qualcomm's device finder cites AR1+ Gen 1 for no device at all. The contradiction is left standing rather than resolved.

## Market position

Three analyst firms published Q1 2026 positions for RayNeo. Two put it first and one puts it second, and all three are counting different products.

| Firm | Period | Basket | RayNeo result |
|---|---|---|---|
| CINNO Research | Q1 2026 | China, consumer AI and AR devices, retail sales | 24%, first, ahead of [Rokid](/wiki/rokid) 20%, XREAL 14%, [Qwen](/wiki/qwen) 11% and [Xiaomi](/wiki/xiaomi_ai_glasses) 7%, in a market of 202,000 units, up 108% year over year [16] |
| Counterpoint Research | Q1 2026 | Global, birdbath and flat prism AR glasses, shipments | 41%, described as maintaining its dominance, ahead of VITURE at 34% [17] |
| IDC | Q1 2026 | Global, smart glasses, shipments | 3.4%, second behind Meta at 69.2% and ahead of Xiaomi at 3.1% [18] |

The Counterpoint 41% in that row is RayNeo's share of birdbath and flat prism, and it is widely misattributed to Rokid. The confusion has a cause: the same release carries a second 41% for a different basket. Its text names Rokid first in the separate waveguide segment without giving it a number, and puts Meta at 38%, Even Realities at 9% and [Alibaba](/wiki/alibaba_quark_ai_glasses) at 5% there, while the chart printed alongside that text shows Rokid at 41% of waveguide and INMO at 2% [17]. RayNeo's birdbath share and RayNeo's own all-AR claim reconcile on arithmetic Counterpoint does not print: birdbath and flat prism accounted for 58% of AR glasses in the quarter, and 41% of 58% is 23.8%, which matches the 23.7% all-AR-glasses share RayNeo claims from Counterpoint's Global XR Market Tracker in its own July 2026 release [8][17].

RayNeo's other published claims are restatements of analyst data rather than independent measurements: a 27% share of 2025 global AR shipments and North American shipments up 456.5% year over year in Q4 2025, both from its April 2026 release [3]; a 42% share of video-centric AR glasses in the second half of 2025, which Counterpoint's own release for that period puts against 28% for second-placed XREAL [8][25]; and 24% of global AR glasses in Q3 2025, the figure that appears in most of its boilerplate [7]. Li said in January 2026 that RayNeo grew three to four times in 2025 over 2024 and predicted shipments above one million units in 2026 [10]. The IDC number is the useful corrective: on the widest smart glasses basket, which is dominated by displayless camera glasses, RayNeo is a small player, and its leadership is real only inside the display categories. The broader picture is covered at [AI glasses market](/wiki/ai_glasses_market) and [AI glasses in China](/wiki/china_ai_glasses).

## Reception

Independent reviewers have been kinder to the cheap tethered glasses than to the expensive flagship. Tom's Guide gave the Air 4 Pro an Editor's Choice in April 2026, calling HDR10 at $299 a first for the category and praising the Bang and Olufsen tuning and 120 Hz refresh, while noting cheap build quality on both glasses and case, edge blurring at large virtual screen sizes, and no adjustable lens tint [19].

Android Central's month-long X3 Pro review in January 2026 was harsher, and on one specific point. The reviewer credited the display, the 30 degree binocular field of view against 20 degrees for Meta Ray-Ban Display, outdoor brightness, translation and the interface, then reported that RayNeo advertises about five hours of battery from a 245 mAh cell but that in use "I couldn't get the glasses to last more than 30 minutes", with the verdict that "the poor battery life makes the glasses unusable" [13]. Network and crash problems present at review time were fixed by a software update; the battery was not. The same review noted that the X3 Pro at 76 g still reads as a technology product rather than eyewear, an area where it rated [Meta's Ray-Ban line](/wiki/meta_ray_ban_ai) better. RayNeo's product page still advertises the X3 Pro on always-on assistance and heads-up navigation, both features the review found the battery could not sustain [1].
