**SEMICON West** is the annual North American exhibition and conference for the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing supply chain, organized by the industry association SEMI.[10][14] It began in 1971 as the first SEMICON show, held at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds in California, and later became a fixture of the Moscone Center in San Francisco.[2][3] After more than 50 years in the Bay Area, the show moved to Phoenix, Arizona for its October 2025 edition, returns to San Francisco for October 13-15, 2026, and is then scheduled to move to the Phoenix Convention Center, which SEMI calls its "long-term home", with a spring schedule starting March 30 to April 1, 2027.[4][10][13]

The show is mainly a trade event for chip equipment, materials, and manufacturing companies, but artificial intelligence has become a prominent theme of its recent programs.[5][13] SEMI's own forecasts attribute record equipment spending to AI demand, and the 2026 program includes a keynote by [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia) and an NVIDIA-sponsored block of talks on [physical AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/physical_ai), robotics, and fab [digital twins](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/digital_twin).[13][15][21]

## Organizer

SEMI is a global industry association serving the semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing supply chain. It describes itself as "company neutral, country neutral" and says it connects more than 4,000 companies and 1.5 million professionals.[1] Besides its SEMICON expositions, SEMI runs technology communities, publishes International SEMI Standards and market data, and does advocacy and workforce development work.[1] Its headquarters are in Milpitas, California, where its press releases are datelined.[3][10][13]

SEMI dates its founding to 1970.[1] A history note republished by chiphistory.org says the SEMICON show was conceived in 1970 by Fred Kulicke and William Hugle. The association that became SEMI was founded as the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Institute, with 55 initial member companies. Philip Gregory was the first show manager and the first head of SEMI.[2] As of 2026, SEMI's president and CEO is Ajit Manocha, and Joe Stockunas is president of SEMI Americas, the regional unit that hosts SEMICON West.[1][4][10]

## History

### Origins in the Bay Area

The first SEMICON was held at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds in 1971. It drew about 80 exhibitors and 2,800 attendees.[2][3] According to the chiphistory.org note, the show later outgrew the fairgrounds and moved to Moscone Center in San Francisco. The original show became known as SEMICON West once SEMI started other SEMICON shows around the world.[2] The San Francisco Chronicle described the show as a fixture at Moscone Center during the decades when the Bay Area was the center of the global chip industry.[3]

For many years the show ran in July. The 2023 edition was held July 11-13 and the 2024 edition July 9-11, both at Moscone Center.[4][5]

### The Phoenix rotation plan (2023)

On January 24, 2023, SEMI announced two changes. SEMICON West would move from July to October, and it would begin a "five-year annual rotation" with Phoenix. Phoenix would host in 2025, 2027 and 2029 at the Phoenix Convention Center, and San Francisco's Moscone Center would host in the alternating years.[4] SEMI said Greater Phoenix was home to more than 75 semiconductor companies, including SEMI members EMD Electronics, Intel and [TSMC](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tsmc).[4] The release said the October timing would begin in 2024, but the 2024 show was still held in July (July 9-11).[4][5]

### First Phoenix edition (2025)

SEMICON West 2025 ran October 7-9 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Its theme was "Stronger Together - Shaping a Sustainable Future in Talent, Technology, and Trade." The Arizona Commerce Authority, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Visit Phoenix were Alliance Sponsors.[6][7] Before the show, SEMI said it expected the largest SEMICON West exhibition in two decades, about 25% larger than 2024, with more than 700 exhibiting companies. It said exhibit space had sold out in November 2024 and that 285 companies were on the waiting list.[6]

Published attendance figures for the Phoenix show do not agree with each other:

| Source | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| DigiTimes (October 2025) | 45% more exhibitors than in 2024; first-day attendance doubled compared with 2024; overseas participation grew significantly[8] |
| Tech Times (July 2026) | 64% higher overall attendance and 45% more exhibitors than the 2024 San Francisco show; 1,533 booths and an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 attendees (figures Tech Times attributes to SEMI Americas president Joe Stockunas); estimated 25,000 attendees in 2024[9] |
| San Francisco Chronicle (July 2026) | "more than 20,000 people and record attendance, according to the company"[3] |

### Permanent move to Phoenix (2026)

On July 30, 2026, SEMI dropped the alternating plan. It announced that Phoenix would become the "long-term home" of SEMICON West and that the show would move to spring, starting March 30 to April 1, 2027. Later editions are scheduled for May 9-11, 2028 and April 3-5, 2029, all at the Phoenix Convention Center.[10] SEMI said the spring dates free up room in a crowded second half of the year, which already includes SEMICON India, SEMICON Taiwan, SEMICON Europa and SEMICON Japan.[10] Stockunas said the change was meant to create "greater consistency for attendees while building on the tremendous momentum of Arizona's rapidly expanding semiconductor ecosystem."[10] The City of Phoenix said SEMI had announced the move on July 30 and that dates were confirmed through 2029.[11]

The San Francisco Chronicle called the October 2026 show the "final scheduled San Francisco edition." It said the decision reversed the rotation plan and ended a more than 50-year association with the Bay Area, and it described the loss as a setback for San Francisco's convention business.[3] SEMI's August 2026 program announcement said SEMICON West "will remain in Phoenix until 2029."[13]

The 2026 online program also has sections for SEMI U courses and standards meetings.[17] SEMICON West 2024 hosted the co-located FLEX Conference & Exhibition on flexible hybrid electronics.[5] SEMI's pre-show announcement for 2025 listed a SEMI Leaders & Legends Honors Dinner at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, which was to include the presentation of the inaugural SEMI Silicon Medal.[6]

For 2026, SEMI offers three pass tiers (Expo Plus, Thought Leadership and All-In). It said the show would have more than 1,500 booths and over 35,000 attendees, and that the 2026 exhibit floor was sold out.[13]

## AI at SEMICON West

AI shows up at SEMICON West in two ways. It drives demand: SEMI attributes its record equipment forecasts to investment in leading-edge logic and advanced memory for AI, and equipment and materials suppliers make up much of the show's exhibitor base.[13][21] AI is also a manufacturing tool, used in fabs for process control, inspection, simulation and robotics.[18] SEMI's recent programs cover both.

### AI as the demand driver

SEMI's market research has repeatedly named AI as the main cause of higher equipment spending:

- In June 2025, SEMI's 300mm Fab Outlook projected that global capacity for 7nm and below would grow about 69%, from 850,000 wafers per month in 2024 to 1.4 million wafers per month in 2028. SEMI said the expansion supported "surging demand for generative AI applications."[22]
- On July 14, 2026, SEMI's Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast projected record total equipment sales of $165.9 billion in 2026, up 23.2% year on year, rising to $229.5 billion in 2028. SEMI said this would be "five consecutive years of growth as AI-driven demand reshapes semiconductor manufacturing investment."[21] Manocha said: "AI is accelerating demand for more powerful and efficient chips, driving increased investment across the semiconductor capital equipment market."[21] The same forecast projected 2026 wafer fab equipment sales of $143.9 billion and DRAM equipment sales of $38.8 billion. SEMI linked the DRAM growth to [high bandwidth memory](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/high_bandwidth_memory).[21]

The 2026 show is framed around the same trend. When registration opened in June 2026, Stockunas said: "With AI driving unprecedented demand and innovation across the value chain, we are seeing strong registrations and enthusiasm for this year's event."[12] In SEMI's August 2026 announcement, Stockunas said that clearing the industry's "$1 trillion annual revenue milestone almost four years ahead of earlier projections" showed the strength of demand for semiconductors, and SEMI said the program would address the path "from $1 trillion toward $2 trillion in annual semiconductor revenue." The Tuesday CEO Summit was billed as a celebration of the industry passing $1 trillion in annual revenue.[13]

### Program highlights, 2024-2026

| Edition | AI-related programming |
|---|---|
| 2024 (San Francisco) | SEMI said AI would be "a prominent theme."
