**Tang Jie** (Chinese: 唐杰; born 1977), also published as Jie Tang, is a Chinese computer scientist, a chair professor at [Tsinghua University](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tsinghua_university), and a co-founder and controlling shareholder of [Zhipu AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/zhipu_ai) (now branded [Z.ai](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/z_ai)), the Beijing company behind the GLM and ChatGLM family of [large language models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/large_language_model). [1][2][23][25] Chinese media commonly describe him as Zhipu's chief scientist, although the company's Hong Kong listing prospectus gives that title to the computer scientist Zhang Bo. [24][25] Tang is the principal builder of the AMiner academic search and mining system, launched in 2006, and a scientific architect of the [GLM](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/glm) pretraining framework that underpins Zhipu's models. [1][4][23] His Google Scholar profile listed more than 83,000 citations and an h-index of 129 in September 2026, and AMiner data reported an h-index of 103 across over 720 papers as of April 2024. [9][23]

Tang holds the WeBank Chair Professorship in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University and directs the Fundamental Model Research Center at Tsinghua's Institute for [Artificial Intelligence](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/artificial_intelligence). [23] He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). [1][6] The GLM effort grew out of Tsinghua's Knowledge Engineering Group (KEG), where Tang has spent most of his research career. [4][5] In January 2026 Zhipu AI became the first of China's so-called AI tigers to list publicly, on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and its prospectus named Tang as a co-founder and one of a group of controlling shareholders acting in concert. [25][33]

## Who is Tang Jie?

Tang Jie is a Chinese computer scientist best known for two bodies of work: the AMiner academic search system he has built since 2006, and the GLM large language models developed by his Tsinghua group and commercialized by [Zhipu AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/zhipu_ai). [1][9][23] Note the Chinese name order: Tang is the family name and Jie is the given name, so he is also cited in English-language papers as Jie Tang. [1][6] His research spans data mining, social network analysis, [knowledge graphs](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/knowledge_graph), and, since around 2020, large scale [language model](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/language_model) pretraining. [1][4] He was also the undergraduate adviser of [Yang Zhilin](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/yang_zhilin), who later founded the rival model company [Moonshot AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/moonshot_ai). [26]

## Education and academic career

Tang studied automation as an undergraduate at Yanshan University, where he also completed a master's degree in computer science in 2002, before starting doctoral study at Tsinghua the same year. [23] He received his PhD in computer science and technology from Tsinghua University in 2006, and his doctoral dissertation won Tsinghua University's outstanding doctoral dissertation award that year. [1][23] He joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua, where he became a full professor and a member of the Knowledge Engineering Group, a research lab focused on data mining, knowledge management, and the semantic web. [1][2] He became WeBank Chair Professor in 2019 and also directs the Fundamental Model Research Center at Tsinghua's Institute for Artificial Intelligence. [23] His stated research interests include [artificial general intelligence](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/artificial_general_intelligence), data mining, social networks, [machine learning](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/machine_learning), and knowledge graphs. [1]

Tang has held a series of organizing and editorial roles in the data mining and web research communities. According to his homepage, he was general co-chair of The Web Conference (WWW) in 2023, program co-chair of WWW 2021, research track program co-chair of CIKM 2016, and program co-chair of WSDM 2015, and he chaired the AI Web track at WWW 2018. [1] He is editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Big Data and of the journal AI Open, and an associate editor of journals including ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. [1] He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one of China's principal grants for research leaders, in 2018. [1][23] Baidu Baike credits him with leading the team that released the Wu Dao 1.0 and Wu Dao 2.0 large models in March and June 2021, the project run by the [Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/baai). [23]

## What is AMiner?

AMiner is an academic search and social network mining system, formerly known as ArnetMiner, that Tang has built and led since 2006. [1][11][23] The system was launched in March 2006 and indexes researchers, publications, citations, and collaboration networks, then applies mining algorithms to model academic influence and expertise. [6][11] Tang's homepage describes an index of more than 136 million researchers and 200 million papers, with visitors from more than 220 countries and regions. [1][11] The underlying paper, "ArnetMiner: Extraction and Mining of Academic Social Networks," published at the ACM SIGKDD conference in 2008, received the SIGKDD Test of Time Award in 2020, a recognition given to work whose impact has lasted about ten years. [1][6][12]

### Network and knowledge mining

Much of Tang's earlier research concerns extracting structured knowledge from large heterogeneous networks. His ACM Fellow citation credits contributions to information and social network mining, and his IEEE Fellow citation credits contributions to knowledge discovery from data and social network mining. [6] This line of work covers topics such as influence analysis in social networks, expert finding, name disambiguation across large bibliographic datasets, and representation learning on graphs, with the AMiner platform serving as both a product and a testbed for the methods. [1]

## What is the GLM pretraining framework?

From around 2020 Tang's group at Tsinghua turned to large scale language model pretraining. The group developed the General Language Model, or GLM, a pretraining approach based on autoregressive blank infilling that is designed to handle both [natural language understanding](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/natural_language_understanding) and generation tasks within one framework. [4][27] The GLM paper, first posted in March 2021 and published at ACL 2022, lists seven authors: Zhengxiao Du, Yujie Qian, Xiao Liu, Ming Ding, Jiezhong Qiu, Zhilin Yang, and Jie Tang. [27] Yang Zhilin, Tang's former undergraduate student, went on to found Moonshot AI in 2023, so the founder of Moonshot and a co-founder of Zhipu appear together on the original GLM paper. [26][27]

GLM became the architectural basis for the models that Zhipu AI later released. The group scaled the approach to a 130 billion parameter bilingual model, GLM-130B, described in the paper "GLM-130B: An Open Bilingual Pre-trained Model," which lists Tang among its 18 authors and was accepted at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2023. [13] The paper frames the model as "an attempt to open-source a 100B-scale model at least as good as GPT-3 (davinci)," trained for English and Chinese, with publicly accessible weights. [13][14] Zhipu's prospectus says that since 2018 KEG, with scientists including Tang, had "spearheaded the development of the GLM large model framework." [25]

## GLM and ChatGLM models

The GLM family expanded into a set of conversational and multimodal systems associated with Tsinghua KEG and Zhipu AI. [4][15] After ChatGPT's release, the group aligned its base models with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback. On 14 March 2023 the aligned ChatGLM-130B went live at chatglm.cn, and a six billion parameter bilingual dialogue model, ChatGLM-6B, was open sourced the same day. [15] Tang's homepage puts ChatGLM-6B downloads at nearly 10 million, and the model helped popularize the line among Chinese developers. [1] Subsequent releases are summarized in the paper "[ChatGLM](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/chatglm): A Family of Large Language Models from GLM-130B to GLM-4 All Tools," published in June 2024, which traces the lineage from GLM-130B through GLM-4; its timeline dates the first GLM-4 release to January 2024. [15] Later iterations such as [GLM-4.5](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/glm_4_5) and [GLM-5](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/glm_5) followed under the Zhipu and Z.ai brands. [15][28] On the day of Zhipu's Hong Kong listing Tang signaled the imminent release of GLM-5, and Zhipu published the GLM-5 weights on Hugging Face under the MIT license on 11 February 2026; Tang is among the authors of its technical report, "GLM-5: from Vibe Coding to Agentic Engineering." [24][28][29]

The line continued through 2026. Zhipu published [GLM-5.1](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/glm_5_1) in April and GLM-5.2 in June, both with MIT-licensed weights on Hugging Face. [30] Z.ai announced [GLM-5.3](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/glm_5_3), a model it described as aimed at agentic coding and cyber defense, on 14 August 2026 and released its weights on 28 August under a custom license. [31][32] The group also produced related open models for code and for image and video generation, including CodeGeeX, CogView, and CogVideo. [1]

## What is Tang Jie's role at Zhipu AI?

Zhipu AI traces its origin to June 2019. Its prospectus says the company was established on 11 June 2019 by a founding team with Tsinghua roots that included Liu Debing, Li Juanzi, Tang Jie, Xu Bin, Zhang Peng, and Wang Shaolan, and that at establishment Tang held about 22 percent of the company. [25] Tang and Li Juanzi are both professors in Tsinghua's Department of Computer Science and Technology, and the company grew out of the Knowledge Engineering Group and the AMiner project. [3][4] The legal entity is registered in Beijing as Zhipu Huazhang (北京智谱华章科技), marketed overseas as Z.ai, and listed in Hong Kong under the English name Knowledge Atlas Technology, changed to Z.AI Co., Ltd. in July 2026. [8][25] In its early period the firm concentrated on knowledge graphs and academic AI before shifting its focus to large language models. [4]

Chinese press coverage, including LatePost, describes Tang as Zhipu's "founding initiator and Chief Scientist," while [Zhang Peng](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/zhang_peng) leads the company as chief executive and Liu Debing chairs the board. [24][25] The company's December 2025 listing prospectus uses different language: it identifies Tang as a co-founder and one of the controlling shareholders, notes that he resigned as a director on 28 June 2025, and reserves the title of chief scientist for Zhang Bo, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences whom it lists among its academic advisers. [25] The prospectus groups Tang with Liu Debing, Li Juanzi, Xu Bin, Zhang Peng, and several holding entities as controlling shareholders under a concert party agreement, holding about 33 percent of the shares before the offering and about 30 percent afterward. [25]

On the day of the Hong Kong listing, Tang issued an internal letter calling for a renewed focus on foundational model research and announcing GLM-5. [16][24] In that letter, published in English translation from LatePost, he wrote that "only theories, technologies, or products that have real users can become significant milestones on the road to AGI," and that "GLM-5 will soon meet everyone." [24] The letter also set out three technical priorities for 2026: a new model architecture, a more general reinforcement learning paradigm, and work on continuous learning and autonomous evolution of models. [24]

## Position among Chinese frontier labs

Zhipu AI is frequently grouped with a small set of well funded Chinese large model startups, sometimes called the AI tigers or, in Chinese coverage, the six little dragons. [3][18] The company had raised about 1.5 billion US dollars across multiple rounds before its public listing, with a 2023 valuation reported near 2.8 billion US dollars. [7] Reported investors include large Chinese technology firms and funds such as Alibaba, Ant Group, Tencent, Meituan, and Xiaomi, the venture firm HongShan, and Middle Eastern backers including Saudi Aramco's Prosperity7 Ventures. [7][19] The firm has also drawn capital from Chinese state linked investors, including a financing from Shanghai state funds in 2025. [7][20]

In January 2025 the United States Department of Commerce added Zhipu AI and several affiliated entities to its export control Entity List, restricting their access to certain US technology, as part of a broader action against Chinese firms tied to advanced computing. [21][22] The company said it strongly disagreed with the decision, called the listing without factual basis, and stated that it did not expect a substantial impact on its operations. [21][22]

## When did Zhipu AI go public?

Zhipu listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under stock code 2513 and began trading on 8 January 2026. [17][25] The offering of about 37.4 million H shares at 116.20 Hong Kong dollars each raised roughly 558 million US dollars, or more than 4.3 billion Hong Kong dollars. [17][25][33] The Hong Kong public tranche was oversubscribed about 1,159 times and the international tranche about 15 times; on the first day the stock rose as high as 130 Hong Kong dollars and the company's market value passed 57 billion Hong Kong dollars. [17] CGTN described Zhipu as China's first AI software maker to list publicly, and the company presented itself as the world's first listed company focused on AGI foundation models. [17]

## What awards has Tang Jie received?

Tang has been elected a Fellow of three major professional societies in computing and artificial intelligence. He was elevated to IEEE Fellow in the class of 2021 (announced in November 2020), named an ACM Fellow in January 2022, and elected an AAAI Fellow in 2023. [6][10][23] He received the ACM SIGKDD Test of Time Award in 2020 for the ArnetMiner work, the SIGKDD Service Award in 2018, and a second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2020, and he has held the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. [1][12][23] His Google Scholar profile listed more than 83,000 citations and an h-index of 129 in September 2026, and AMiner data reported an h-index of 103 across over 720 publications as of April 2024.
