Volcano Engine (Chinese: 火山引擎; pinyin: Huoshan Yinqing) is the enterprise cloud and artificial intelligence platform operated by [ByteDance](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/bytedance), the company that owns Douyin and [TikTok](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tiktok). It sells [cloud computing](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cloud_computing) infrastructure, data and recommendation services built on the technology behind ByteDance's consumer apps, a [machine learning](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/machine_learning) platform, and access to the company's [Doubao](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/doubao) family of models. ByteDance introduced the Volcano Engine brand in June 2020 to package its internal engineering capabilities for outside customers, made it a standalone business unit in November 2021, and launched a full public cloud later that year.[2][5][6]

The platform became one of the most visible names in [China's AI sector](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/china_ai) after May 2024, when it released the Doubao models commercially and cut prices far below prevailing rates, helping set off a price war among Chinese model providers.[3][4][8] Volcano Engine has since used the daily volume of text its models process as its headline growth metric, reporting a rise from roughly 120 billion tokens per day at the Doubao launch to about 120 trillion per day by early 2026.[7][9] On its own website it says it holds the largest share of China's public-cloud market for large-model calls.[1]

Volcano Engine is led by Tan Dai (谭待) and operates as part of ByteDance rather than as a separately listed company.[6][9] Because United States export controls restrict China's access to the most advanced AI chips, ByteDance has increasingly sourced and run high-end [Nvidia](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia) hardware through data centers outside mainland China.[13][15]

## Background and launch

ByteDance built its consumer businesses, including the short-video app Douyin and its international counterpart TikTok, on large-scale recommendation, data, and content-processing systems. Volcano Engine began in June 2020 as an effort to sell those same capabilities to other companies. Its early catalog centered on data intelligence, personalized [recommendation](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/recommendation_system), A/B testing, growth tooling, and computer-vision software rather than raw compute. One of its first published customers, the Haier appliance brand Leader, embedded Volcano Engine's computer-vision SDK in a smart refrigerator for features such as automatic photo touch-up and filters.[5]

The unit then expanded into general cloud services. On November 2, 2021, ByteDance chief executive Liang Rubo reorganized the company into six business units and made Volcano Engine one of them; the entity's registered capital was raised from 10 million to 1 billion yuan that month.[6] Volcano Engine held a cloud launch event on December 2, 2021, adding compute, storage, database, and networking products alongside its existing data and algorithm services, and positioning itself as a public cloud competing with [Alibaba Cloud](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/alibaba_cloud), [Tencent](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tencent), [Huawei](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/huawei), and [Baidu](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/baidu).[6]

## Services and platform

Volcano Engine's offerings fall into three broad layers. The base is cloud infrastructure: elastic compute, object storage, managed databases including MySQL, content delivery, and a machine learning platform for training and serving models.[1][6] On top of that sit the data and recommendation services carried over from ByteDance's consumer apps, including personalization, search, growth, and analytics tools sold into retail, finance, automotive, and other industries.[5][7] In August 2024, for example, Volcano Engine organized a retail alliance whose members included the grocery operators Dmall and Wumart, Douyin's e-commerce arm, and the restaurant operators Yum and McDonald's.[7]

The model layer is where Volcano Engine now draws most attention. Enterprises reach the Doubao models, and a set of selected third-party models, through a managed service called Volcano Ark (火山方舟), and they can assemble applications with agent-building tools sold under the Coze (扣子) brand.[1] The Doubao consumer chatbot launched in August 2023, and the underlying models are served to business customers through Volcano Engine.[14] The family has grown to cover text, image generation ([Seedream](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/seedream)), video generation ([Seedance](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/seedance)), and speech.[1] Volcano Engine introduced its first two video-generation models, PixelDance and Seaweed, on September 25, 2024, producing clips of up to 10 and 30 seconds respectively.[8]

## Pricing and the 2024 price war

On May 15, 2024, Volcano Engine released the Doubao [large models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/large_language_model) for commercial use at an event in Beijing and priced them well below competitors.[4] The general-purpose Doubao Pro 32k model was offered at 0.0008 yuan per 1,000 tokens of input, which the company said was 99.3 percent below the roughly 0.12 yuan per 1,000 tokens then common in the industry, a rate about 150 times higher.[3] At that price one yuan bought about 1.25 million tokens, which ByteDance described as enough to process roughly two million Chinese characters.[3][4]

| Item | Figure |
| --- | --- |
| Model | Doubao Pro 32k (general purpose) |
| Input price | 0.0008 yuan per 1,000 tokens (0.8 yuan per million, about US$0.11) |
| Typical industry price | about 0.12 yuan per 1,000 tokens |
| Claimed discount | 99.3 percent below the industry rate |
| Tokens per 1 yuan | about 1.25 million |
| Announced | May 15, 2024, Beijing |

The cut set off a price war among China's large-model providers, with rivals lowering their own prices in the following weeks.[8] Volcano Engine said its enterprise model was priced more than 99 percent below the industry average while still carrying a positive gross margin, framing the reductions as a way to expand [inference](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/inference) usage rather than a loss-leader.[8] The move drew heavy coverage in the Chinese business press, which cast it as ByteDance forcing a reset of model pricing across the market.[3]

## Scale and market position

Volcano Engine reports the daily volume of tokens Doubao processes as its main measure of traction, and the figure has climbed steeply since the 2024 launch.

| Date | Reported daily tokens | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| May 2024 (launch) | about 120 billion | [7] |
| July 2024 | more than 500 billion | [7] |
| September 2024 | about 1.3 trillion | [8] |
| End of September 2025 | more than 30 trillion | [10] |
| Early 2026 | about 120 trillion | [9] |

By early 2026 the company said daily token usage had roughly doubled over the previous three months and grown about 1,000-fold since the May 2024 launch, and that 140 enterprise customers had each cumulatively used more than one trillion tokens, up from 100 at the end of 2025.[9] Tan Dai attributed the growth to AI video generation and the wider adoption of AI agents.[9] Volcano Engine discloses these numbers at its developer event, the Force conference (Force大会), where it also launched the [Doubao 1.6](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/doubao_seed_1_6) model in June 2025.[10]

On its website, Volcano Engine says it accounts for 49.5 percent of China's public-cloud market for large-model calls, which would make it the largest single provider by that measure. The figure is a company claim, and the site does not attribute it to an independent research firm.[1]

The consumer Doubao app grew alongside the enterprise platform. Trackers put its monthly active users at about 27.5 million in the first half of 2024, around 51 million by late 2024, roughly 157 million by August 2025, and about 330 million by mid-2026, though methodologies differ across sources.[7][10][11][12] In 2026 ByteDance began charging for premium Doubao tiers, at 68 yuan a month for a standard plan and 500 yuan a month for a premium plan, an early attempt to monetize a service it had offered free; the app lost about 6.1 million users, or 1.81 percent, in May 2026 as the change took effect.[12]

## Chips and export controls

Serving models at this scale depends on large fleets of AI accelerators, most of them [GPUs](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gpu), and here Volcano Engine works under the same limits as the rest of China's AI industry. United States [export controls](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/export_controls) bar the sale of the most capable Nvidia processors to Chinese customers, leaving buyers to rely on throttled China-specific parts such as the [Nvidia H20](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_h20), on domestic chips such as [Huawei's Ascend](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/huawei_ascend) line, or on capacity located outside the country. The controls are enforced through mechanisms including the Commerce Department's [Entity List](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/entity_list).

ByteDance, among the largest buyers of AI chips in China, has responded partly by building and renting advanced-GPU capacity outside the mainland. In March 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported that ByteDance had gained access to top-tier Nvidia chips through facilities abroad; the company deployed about 500 Nvidia [Blackwell](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_blackwell) systems, roughly 36,000 B200 processors, in Malaysia through a partner named Aolani Cloud.[13][15] Running the hardware overseas lets ByteDance train and serve larger models than the chips available inside China would support, while keeping the deployments outside the reach of the domestic sales ban.[15]
