**Wang Xiaochuan** (born October 3, 1978) is a Chinese computer scientist and entrepreneur, the founder and chief executive of [Baichuan](/wiki/baichuan) (Baichuan Intelligence), a Beijing-based artificial intelligence company he established in April 2023. He is best known as the creator of [Sogou](/wiki/sogou), the search engine and input-method company he built inside the internet portal [Sohu](/wiki/sohu) and led as CEO from 2010 until [Tencent](/wiki/tencent) took it private in 2021 in a deal that valued the company at about $3.5 billion [1][3]. Baichuan was initially grouped among China's "AI tiger" startups racing to build general-purpose [large language models](/wiki/large_language_model), but under Wang's direction it narrowed its mission in 2025 to medical AI, with the stated goal of building AI doctors [15][23]. TIME named Wang to its [TIME 100 AI](/wiki/time_100_ai) list in 2024 [11].

## Early life and education

Wang was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in 1978 [1]. A standout in competitive mathematics and programming as a teenager, he won a gold medal at the 8th International Olympiad in Informatics in 1996 at age 17, a result that earned him admission to the computer science department of [Tsinghua University](/wiki/tsinghua_university) [1]. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and technology at Tsinghua and later added an EMBA from the same university [1].

While still a student he worked as an engineer at the youth community site ChinaRen, which Sohu acquired in 2000; Wang moved with the business and rose through Sohu's technical ranks, becoming the company's youngest vice president at 27 and its chief technology officer at 31 [1][2].

## Sogou

Wang set up Sohu's research and development center in 2003 and launched Sogou Search in 2004, which grew into China's second-largest search engine [1][2]. In 2006 his team released the Sogou Pinyin input method, which became the most widely used Chinese input software and anchored Sogou's consumer reach [1].

Sogou was carved out of Sohu as a standalone company in 2010, with Wang as chief executive and outside investment that included [Alibaba](/wiki/alibaba) [1]. In September 2013 Tencent invested $448 million and folded its own Soso search operations into Sogou, becoming a major shareholder [1]. Wang took the company public on the New York Stock Exchange on November 9, 2017, under the ticker SOGO, at a valuation of roughly $5 billion [1].

In September 2020 Tencent agreed to acquire the Sogou shares it did not already own for $9.00 per American depositary share in cash, an offer that valued the company at about $3.5 billion [3]. The going-private merger was completed in late September 2021, ending Sogou's NYSE listing, and Wang resigned as CEO on October 15, 2021, saying his next chapter would be devoted to medicine and life sciences [1][4][5]. He had already been an active investor in health technology, backing the telemedicine platform Chunyu Doctor, the AI retinal-imaging firm Airdoc, the dental-imaging startup DeepCare, and the traditional Chinese medicine service Xiaolu [1]. In 2022 he co-founded Wuji Zhikang, a small healthcare and AI software venture that prefigured his later work [14].

## Baichuan AI

Wang launched Baichuan Intelligence on April 10, 2023, with about $50 million in initial funding from himself and angel backers, recruiting a core team that included former Sogou colleagues such as co-founder Ru Liyun [6][10][14]. At the founding he framed the startup's ambition as building "China's [OpenAI](/wiki/openai)," promising a domestically developed foundation model that year [6][7].

Baichuan shipped models at an unusually fast cadence in its first 18 months [14]:

| Model | Release | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Baichuan-7B | June 2023 | Open-source 7B-parameter Chinese-English model [7][10] |
| Baichuan-13B | July 2023 | Open-source 13B model, free for commercial use [7] |
| Baichuan-53B | August 2023 | Larger closed-source model [10] |
| Baichuan 2 (7B/13B) | September 2023 | Upgraded open-source generation trained on 2.6T tokens [8] |
| Baichuan2-192K | October 2023 | Long-context model the company said could process about 350,000 Chinese characters, ahead of contemporary [Anthropic](/wiki/anthropic) and OpenAI context windows [9] |
| Baichuan 3 | January 2024 | Flagship model with over 100 billion parameters [10] |
| Baichuan 4 | May 2024 | Flagship release, launched with the Baixiaoying assistant app [10] |
| Baichuan4-Finance | December 2024 | Financial-services vertical model [25] |

The company also released Baichuan-Omni, an open-source 7B multimodal model handling text, images, audio and video, in October 2024 [14].

Investors backed the effort heavily. In October 2023 Baichuan raised $300 million from Alibaba, Tencent, [Xiaomi](/wiki/xiaomi) and others, reaching unicorn status within roughly six months of founding [10][11]. In July 2024 it closed a Series A of about 5 billion yuan (roughly $690 million) at a valuation above 20 billion yuan (about $2.8 billion), with participants including Alibaba, Tencent and Xiaomi alongside state-linked capital such as the AI industry funds of the Beijing and Shanghai municipal governments, Shenzhen Capital Group and China International Capital Corporation [12][13]. Chinese media grouped Baichuan with [Zhipu AI](/wiki/zhipu_ai), [Moonshot AI](/wiki/moonshot_ai), [MiniMax](/wiki/minimax), [01.AI](/wiki/01_ai) and [StepFun](/wiki/stepfun) as the country's "AI tigers," the venture-backed startups contending for China's frontier-model crown [15].

Strains emerged as commercialization lagged the hype. Co-founder Hong Tao left in December 2024, a departure Chinese media tied to revenue falling short of expectations, and in March 2025 the company disbanded the enterprise teams serving finance, education and other verticals, only months after shipping Baichuan4-Finance [16][25].

## Medical AI focus

Healthcare had been part of Wang's plan from the start: Baichuan signed a tripartite agreement with Beijing Children's Hospital and the pediatric platform Xiaoerfang on August 28, 2023 [17]. From early 2025 it became the whole strategy. The retrenchment came amid a broader shake-out in which price wars and the rise of open-source competitors such as [DeepSeek](/wiki/deepseek) squeezed China's general-model startups, a repositioning The Wire China dubbed "Baichuan's Big Pivot" [15]. Wang told staff the company would concentrate resources on medicine, sketching plans for a "super doctor" model and a personal AI health assistant for residents of Beijing's Haidian district [16].

Concrete deployments followed. The "Futang Baichuan" pediatric foundation model, built with Beijing Children's Hospital, was unveiled on March 20, 2025; its expert edition had been in clinical operation since February 13, 2025, agreeing with specialist panels in about 95 percent of multidisciplinary consultations, and a grassroots edition was slated for community hospitals in Beijing and more than 150 county hospitals in Hebei [17].

The model line was rebuilt around medicine [18][19][20][21][22][23]:

| Model | Release | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Baichuan-M1 | January to February 2025 | First medically enhanced generation; open 14B variant trained on 20 trillion tokens [18] |
| Baichuan-M2 | August 2025 | Open-source clinical model scoring 60.1 on [HealthBench](/wiki/healthbench), above OpenAI's [gpt-oss-120b](/wiki/gpt_oss) (57.6); designed for private in-hospital deployment [19] |
| Baichuan-M2 Plus | October 2025 | Evidence-enhanced variant with reduced hallucination, powering the Baixiaoying app [20] |
| Baichuan-M3 / M3 Plus | January 2026 | Open 235B model trained to conduct doctor-style clinical inquiry; scored 65.1 on HealthBench versus 63.3 for [GPT-5.2](/wiki/gpt_5_2)-High, with a reported 3.5 percent medical hallucination rate [21][22] |

In a May 2026 interview, Wang said Baichuan had cut headcount to under 300 with a flattened structure, was developing a closed-source agent-architecture medical model known as M4, and was positioning Baixiaoying as an AI family doctor delivered through an app and WeChat [23]. He stressed that the goal is to "increase the supply of doctors" by embedding AI inside hospital systems and tiered diagnosis rather than replacing physicians [23].

## Views

Wang has long argued that artificial general intelligence should be judged by the value of its services rather than benchmark one-upmanship, quipping in 2023 that if he could not make an "elixir of life" he would happily make a "longevity pill" first, and describing the AGI transition as closer to a renaissance than a rerun of the industrial revolution [24]. While he initially invoked OpenAI as a reference point, he later insisted that Baichuan did not want to be "just 'China's OpenAI'" but to set a world-class agenda of its own, centered on what he calls the intelligent era of human-machine symbiosis [14].

He has repeatedly identified medicine as the most meaningful proving ground for AGI, predicting in 2024 that within three years an AI pediatrician could match the expertise of a chief physician at a top-tier hospital [14]. Defending his exit from the mainstream model race in May 2026, he acknowledged bubbles in AGI narratives but argued that staying the consensus course offered no refuge: "If you don't transform and continue on the mainstream path, you'll also experience the same level of anxiety" [23].
