**Wayve** is a British [artificial intelligence](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/artificial_intelligence) company, founded in Cambridge in 2017 by Alex Kendall and Amar Shah, that develops end to end "[embodied AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/embodied_ai)" software for [autonomous driving](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_driving) and robotics, and in May 2024 raised a 1.05 billion United States dollar Series C led by [SoftBank](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/softbank) that was the largest artificial intelligence funding round ever announced in Europe.[8][9] Headquartered in London, Wayve is best known for popularising the so called AV 2.0 approach to self driving, which replaces the modular sense plan act robotic stack of earlier [autonomous vehicle](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_vehicle) programmes with a single, end to end [neural network](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/neural_network) trained on raw sensor data. The company has developed two flagship lines of [foundation models](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/foundation_models) for driving, the GAIA family of generative world models and the LINGO family of vision language action models, and has raised more than two and a half billion dollars from investors including SoftBank, [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia), [Microsoft](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/microsoft), Mercedes Benz, Stellantis, Nissan and Uber.[1][2][3][34] On 3 September 2026 Wayve and [Uber](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/uber) launched supervised autonomous rides in London, the first autonomous trips offered to the public in the United Kingdom, using a small fleet of Ford Mustang Mach-E cars driven by the Wayve AI Driver with a licensed private hire driver on board.[21][22][23]

Wayve does not operate its own robotaxi fleet. Instead it sells its driving foundation model and surrounding software stack to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and mobility partners, positioning itself as a horizontal supplier comparable in business model to [Mobileye](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/mobileye) but built on a different technical foundation. Its [self driving cars](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/self_driving_car) have been tested on public roads in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Japan, and the company has announced commercial pilots and agreements with Nissan, Uber, Stellantis, Asda and Ocado.[12][14][37] Under the robotaxi partnership as Wayve described it in February 2026, Uber owns and operates the fleet while Wayve supplies the driving software, so the London service is an Uber fleet running Wayve's AI Driver rather than a Wayve-run taxi company.[34]

## What is Wayve?

Wayve Technologies Ltd. was incorporated on 21 August 2017 in Cambridge, England, by Alex Kendall and Amar Shah, two machine learning doctoral students at the University of Cambridge.[11] The company began operating from a residential house outside Cambridge before later relocating its headquarters to King's Cross in London. Co founder Amar Shah departed the company in 2020 and [Alex Kendall](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/alex_kendall) became sole chief executive officer.[10]

Wayve frames its mission as building embodied artificial intelligence for the physical world, with self driving as its first deployment vertical. The company describes its product as a driving foundation model, a single learned policy that maps camera and other sensor inputs to driving actions, and emphasises that the same underlying approach can in principle be transferred between vehicle platforms with little engineering effort.[1] Announcing the 2024 Series C, Kendall said the round reflected "our team's unwavering conviction that Embodied AI will address the long-standing challenges the industry has faced in scaling this technology to everyone, everywhere."[8]

As of 2026 Wayve employed several hundred staff across offices in London, Sunnyvale in California, Vancouver and Yokohama, and reported a post money valuation of 8.6 billion United States dollars following the 1.2 billion dollar Series D round it announced on 25 February 2026.[19][34][41][42]

## History

### Founding and early research, 2017 to 2019

The origins of Wayve trace back to research at the University of Cambridge by Alex Kendall under the supervision of Roberto Cipolla. Kendall, originally from New Zealand, completed his PhD on deep learning for geometric computer vision and simultaneous localisation and mapping. His doctoral work on probabilistic deep learning and Bayesian uncertainty estimation, together with related research on end to end learning to drive, became part of the conceptual foundation for the company. Amar Shah, who studied in Zoubin Ghahramani's Machine Learning Group, brought additional expertise in probabilistic methods and reinforcement learning.[11]

In 2017 the pair founded Wayve and began experimenting with reinforcement learning to control a small electric vehicle. A 2018 paper titled Learning to Drive in a Day, in which a reinforcement learning agent learned lane following in a single afternoon of training on a public road, brought the company to wider attention and helped articulate the central claim that driving could be learned end to end without hand engineered perception, prediction and planning modules.[1]

In 2019 Wayve demonstrated that the same techniques could drive a car through urban streets in central Cambridge that the system had never seen before, using only cameras, a satellite navigation map and a deep neural network.[10] The company subsequently moved its main operations to London and began collecting on road data with a fleet of retrofitted Jaguar I Pace and Ford Mondeo vehicles.

### Scaling and AV 2.0 narrative, 2020 to 2023

Following Amar Shah's departure in 2020, Wayve concentrated on scaling its data, compute infrastructure and engineering team. In November 2019 it closed a 20 million dollar Series A, and in January 2022 it raised 200 million dollars in a Series B led by Eclipse Ventures with participation from D1 Capital, Baillie Gifford and Microsoft. The Series B was the largest Series B for a European artificial intelligence company at the time.[11]

At this point the company began publicly articulating the AV 2.0 thesis: that the modular software stacks built by first generation autonomous vehicle programmes such as Waymo, Cruise and Argo AI were an evolutionary dead end, and that an end to end neural network trained on diverse driving data was a more scalable path to robust self driving.[1] AV 2.0 was framed as analogous to the transition in computer vision and natural language processing from hand engineered pipelines to deep learning.

In 2023 Wayve announced two new product directions. In June it previewed GAIA-1, a generative world model trained on its UK driving data, and released a technical report in September.[2][3] In September of the same year it introduced LINGO-1, a vision language model that produced natural language commentary on driving scenes.[6] Both releases were aimed at making the company's end to end approach more interpretable, more amenable to evaluation and more efficient to train.

### Embodied AI, the Series C and international expansion, 2024 to 2025

In May 2024 Wayve announced a Series C round of 1.05 billion United States dollars led by [SoftBank](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/softbank), with new investor [NVIDIA](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia) and existing investor [Microsoft](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/microsoft) participating.[8][9] The round was at the time the largest artificial intelligence funding round announced in Europe and one of the twenty largest worldwide.[9] It brought Wayve's cumulative funding to approximately 1.31 billion dollars and added SoftBank to the company's board of directors.[8]

During 2024 and 2025 Wayve opened offices in Mountain View and Yokohama, expanded testing to highways and city streets in the United States and Germany, and announced partnerships with Asda, Ocado and Uber.[14][15][16] In April 2024 it unveiled LINGO-2, the first closed loop vision language action driving model tested on public roads, and in March 2025 it released GAIA-2, a controllable multi view generative world model.[7][4]

The Uber relationship began on 29 August 2024, when the two companies announced a strategic partnership under which future Wayve-powered vehicles would be made available on the Uber network in multiple markets and Uber agreed to make a strategic investment in Wayve as an extension of the Series C.[45] On 10 June 2025, the day the United Kingdom's Transport Secretary announced that commercial pilots of self driving services would be fast tracked to spring 2026, Wayve and Uber said they would develop and launch public road trials of Level 4 vehicles in London and would work with the government and Transport for London on permitting.[14][32] In September 2025 Wayve announced that it had signed a letter of intent with NVIDIA to evaluate a 500 million dollar strategic investment in its next funding round, and said its Gen 3 vehicle platform would be built on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor.[47]

In December 2025 Wayve released GAIA-3, a 15 billion parameter generative world model focused on validation and evaluation.[5] On 10 December 2025 Wayve and Nissan signed definitive agreements to integrate the "Wayve AI Driver" into the next generation ProPILOT driver assistance series across a broad range of Nissan vehicles, with Nissan planning to introduce the first ProPILOT model using the technology in Japan in fiscal year 2027.[12]

### Series D and commercial deployment, 2026

On 25 February 2026 Wayve announced a 1.2 billion dollar Series D round at a post money valuation of 8.6 billion dollars, led by Eclipse, Balderton and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from Microsoft, NVIDIA and Uber and investment from the automakers Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Stellantis. Wayve said the total capital secured was 1.5 billion dollars once Uber's additional, milestone-based commitment to fund Wayve-powered robotaxi deployments was included, and set out a plan to launch commercial robotaxi trials with Uber in 2026 and to ship supervised autonomy software in consumer vehicles from 2027.[34] On 15 April 2026 AMD, Arm and Qualcomm Ventures added 60 million dollars as an extension of the Series D; the extension announcement did not state a new valuation.[35]

The rest of 2026 was dominated by deployment work. Wayve, Uber and Nissan signed a memorandum of understanding on 12 March 2026 for a robotaxi pilot in Tokyo using the Nissan LEAF, and four days later Wayve and Nissan exhibited the LEAF prototype, built on [NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia_drive_hyperion), at NVIDIA GTC 2026.[39][40] Wayve signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department for Business and Trade on 12 May 2026, announced a Level 2++ integration deal with Stellantis on 21 May and a three way robotaxi partnership with Stellantis and Uber on 17 June, launched its Wayve Labs research unit in June, and completed an 85 million dollar employee share sale on the London Stock Exchange's new Private Securities Market on 8 July.[36][37][38][41][49] Transport for London licensed the company's Ford Mustang Mach-E cars as private hire vehicles on 5 August, and on 3 September 2026 the London service opened to the public through Uber.[27][21]

## Founders and leadership

Alex Kendall serves as chief executive officer and is the public face of Wayve. He completed a PhD in computer vision at the University of Cambridge with a focus on deep learning for SLAM and Bayesian uncertainty, and his early academic work on geometric loss functions and end to end learning informs the company's technical direction.[10] Kendall has become a prominent advocate for the AV 2.0 framing in industry conferences, podcasts and policy discussions and was awarded an MBE in 2024 for services to engineering.[18]

Amar Shah, the co founder who departed in 2020, completed his PhD in Bayesian optimisation and probabilistic machine learning, also at Cambridge. After leaving Wayve he founded a separate machine learning company.

The broader leadership team has included Erez Dagan as president, formerly of Mobileye, Silvius Rus as senior vice president of engineering, formerly of Waymo, and Jamie Shotton as chief scientist, who previously led research at Microsoft Research Cambridge. Max Warburton, an automotive industry analyst, joined as chief financial officer in November 2024.[50] Executives quoted in the company's 2026 announcements include Sarah Gates, vice president for global affairs and assurance, and Kaity Fischer, vice president of commercial and operations.[27][38]

### Wayve Labs

In June 2026 Wayve launched Wayve Labs, which it describes as a frontier research unit for intelligence that can perceive, reason and act in the physical world.[41] Andrea Tagliasacchi, previously an associate professor at Simon Fraser University and a researcher at Google, joined on 1 June 2026 as Principal Scientist in Vancouver to lead work on 3D scene understanding, neural scene representations and world models.[42] On 18 August 2026 Alex Toshev, a former Apple machine learning research leader who co-led Apple's MM1 multimodal models and, earlier, the SayCan robotics work at Google, joined as research director to build a general robotics team in Sunnyvale. Wayve said the team would build a foundation intelligence layer for physical systems beyond automotive, starting with robot manipulation, and described the company as "fundamentally a foundation-model company" in Toshev's words.[41]

## How does Wayve's technology work?

### The AV 2.0 thesis

The AV 2.0 narrative is the central organising idea of Wayve's technology. In Wayve's framing, traditional autonomous driving programmes from the late 2000s and early 2010s, sometimes referred to as AV 1.0, relied on a modular stack consisting of a perception module that detects objects, a prediction module that estimates their future trajectories, a planner that chooses an ego trajectory and a control module that produces actuator commands. Each module was typically built using a mixture of classical algorithms and supervised deep learning, calibrated against a high definition map of the operating environment and a large library of hand written behavioural rules.[1]

Wayve argues that this approach has three structural problems: it does not scale across cities because every new domain requires fresh HD maps and rule updates; hand written rules struggle with the long tail of unusual but safety critical situations; and the loss functions used to train modules in isolation are only loosely correlated with the true downstream objective of safe and comfortable driving.[1]

AV 2.0 replaces this stack with a single neural network trained [end to end](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/end_to_end_learning) on diverse driving data. The network takes raw camera images, vehicle state, route information and optional auxiliary sensors as input, and produces a driving trajectory or low level control commands as output. Training uses a mixture of imitation learning from expert human drivers, reinforcement learning in [world model](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/world_model) based simulation and self supervised objectives derived from large quantities of unlabelled driving video. Key claimed advantages include generalisation to new cities and vehicle platforms without per location engineering, the avoidance of expensive HD map maintenance, and the ability to leverage data at internet scale.[1][17]

Wayve frequently positions itself as occupying a distinctive square in this matrix, combining a fully end to end model in the Tesla tradition with an OEM licensing business model in the Mobileye tradition, while explicitly rejecting both first party robotaxi operation and reliance on high definition maps.[10]

### What are the GAIA world models?

The GAIA line is Wayve's family of generative world models. World models in the autonomous driving context are deep generative models that learn to predict future video and sensor observations from past observations and candidate actions, and can therefore be used as simulators for training and evaluating driving policies.[2]

#### GAIA-1

GAIA-1, previewed in June 2023 and described in a technical report released in September 2023, is a nine billion parameter generative world model trained on approximately 4,700 hours of Wayve's UK driving data.[2][3] The model, in the words of its authors, "casts world modeling as an unsupervised sequence modeling problem by mapping the inputs to discrete tokens, and predicting the next token in the sequence," with separate encoders for video, action and text and a transformer that predicts the next token.[3] The associated arXiv paper, GAIA-1: A Generative World Model for Autonomous Driving, was posted on 29 September 2023 by Anthony Hu, Lloyd Russell, Alex Kendall, Jamie Shotton and colleagues.[3]

GAIA-1 generates short clips of plausible driving video conditioned on previous frames, ego vehicle actions and natural language prompts such as descriptions of weather or traffic conditions.[2] It is used internally for data augmentation, scenario generation and evaluation.

#### GAIA-2

[GAIA-2](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gaia_2_wayve), released on 26 March 2025, is described as a controllable multi view generative world model.[4] The model is trained on a larger and more diverse dataset including data from the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, multiple vehicle platforms ranging from passenger cars to vans and multiple camera configurations. GAIA-2 supports fine grained control over ego vehicle actions, dynamic agents and scene properties such as time of day and weather, and generates consistent video across several synchronised cameras.[4]

GAIA-2 was released alongside a technical report and a permissive research preview. The model is intended both as an internal tool for generating corner case scenarios and as a building block for closed loop policy evaluation.

#### GAIA-3

[GAIA-3](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gaia_3_wayve), released on 2 December 2025, is a 15 billion parameter generative world model that doubles the parameter count of GAIA-2 and uses a video tokeniser of roughly twice the capacity.[5] According to Wayve's announcement GAIA-3 is pre trained on approximately ten times the data of its predecessor, spanning multiple continents and a wide range of vehicle types, environments and driving conditions. The release explicitly frames GAIA as a foundation for autonomy evaluation rather than primarily a tool for visual synthesis, with scene generation aimed at safety assurance and regulatory evidence.[5]

#### GAIA-4

[GAIA-4](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/gaia_4_wayve), announced on 3 August 2026 through a research blog post, is a multimodal world model for closed-loop simulation. It puts the Wayve AI Driver inside the simulation loop, so that the driving model's decisions change the sensor inputs it receives next, and it generates radar alongside camera video, which Wayve calls an industry first for autonomous driving simulators. Wayve positions GAIA-4 as the core world model of "Simulation 2.0", its framework for validating end-to-end driving systems, with a "world-on-rails" mode in which every other road user replays its logged behaviour while only the ego vehicle changes.[20]

### What are the LINGO vision language models?

The LINGO line is Wayve's family of vision language models for driving, used to add natural language interpretation and instruction following to the driving foundation model.

#### LINGO-1

LINGO-1, announced in September 2023, is an open loop driving commentator.[6] It combines the company's vision backbone with an autoregressive language model trained to produce natural language commentary about what the driving system perceives and intends to do. LINGO-1 was trained on a dataset of expert UK drivers narrating their own driving for several thousand hours, allowing the model to associate visual scenes with natural language explanations of road behaviour.[6] Because LINGO-1 generated commentary retrospectively from observed video, it was a useful explanation and evaluation tool but did not itself control the vehicle.

#### LINGO-2

[LINGO-2](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/lingo_2_wayve), introduced on 17 April 2024, is described by Wayve as "the first closed-loop vision-language-action driving model (VLAM) tested on public roads."[7] It consists of a vision module that maps consecutive camera frames into a sequence of visual tokens and an autoregressive language model that consumes those tokens together with conditioning information such as the planned route, the current speed and the speed limit. The language model is trained jointly to predict a future driving trajectory and a natural language commentary describing the scene and the chosen action. Wayve tested the model both in its neural simulator, Ghost Gym, and on public roads.[7]

LINGO-2 supports natural language prompts that influence driving behaviour, for example instructing the car to pull over, change lane or take a particular turn. This opens the door to natural language as a control interface for autonomous driving and as a tool for verifying that the model's perception of a scene is consistent with its actions. Wayve has demonstrated LINGO-2 driving in central London while producing real time commentary explaining its decisions.[7]

### Other technical work

Wayve has also published research on probabilistic deep learning, neural radiance fields, learned simulation, scaling laws for driving, and the integration of foundation models with classical planning and safety mechanisms. The company has invested heavily in fleet learning infrastructure, including cloud scale data curation, automated long tail mining and continuous training pipelines.

### Compute platforms

Wayve describes the AI Driver as hardware agnostic and has lined up several automotive compute options. Its collaboration with NVIDIA dates from 2018; Wayve's models are built and trained on NVIDIA infrastructure, the cars in the London service run on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX compute, and the Gen 3 vehicle platform announced in September 2025 is built on DRIVE AGX Thor.[43][47] The Nissan LEAF robotaxi prototype uses the full NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion reference architecture with dual DRIVE AGX Thor processors, NVIDIA DriveOS and NVIDIA Halos, and NVIDIA said on 3 September 2026 that Hyperion would power future Wayve deployments.[40][43] Separately, a March 2026 collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies pre-integrates the AI Driver on the Snapdragon Ride platform for driver assistance and automated driving programmes, and the April 2026 investment from AMD, Arm and Qualcomm Ventures was explicitly framed around integration across the automotive compute stack.[48][35]

The May 2024 Series C of 1.05 billion dollars was the largest single funding round raised by a private artificial intelligence company in Europe at the time and, according to the company, the United Kingdom's largest artificial intelligence fundraise ever.[8][9] The February 2026 Series D of 1.2 billion dollars set Wayve's post money valuation at 8.6 billion dollars; the company put its total capital secured at 1.5 billion dollars when Uber's additional milestone-based commitment, which funds Wayve-powered robotaxi deployments on the Uber network in more than ten markets, is included.[34] The 500 million dollar figure sometimes attached to NVIDIA relates to a September 2025 letter of intent under which NVIDIA agreed to evaluate an investment of that size in Wayve's next round; NVIDIA's actual participation in the Series D was not itemised, and the round was not led by an automaker.[47][34] TIME reported the 8.6 billion dollar valuation in April 2026.[19]

In July 2026 Wayve ran an 85 million dollar employee tender on the London Stock Exchange's Private Securities Market, built on the UK's PISCES framework; LSEG described it as Wayve's first transaction on the market and as the market's first employee-liquidity transaction, letting current employees sell vested equity through a permissioned auction.[49]

## Partnerships and pilots

Wayve has structured its commercial strategy around partnerships with vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators and government agencies rather than first party robotaxi operations.

The Asda and Ocado pilots have used Wayve equipped vans on public road delivery routes in the London area, refining the company's narrative around urban driving without high definition maps.[15][16] The December 2025 Nissan agreements represent a significant step toward consumer scale deployment as a driver assistance product integrated into Nissan production vehicles.[12] The Tokyo robotaxi plan is separate: under a memorandum of understanding signed on 12 March 2026, Wayve, Uber and Nissan agreed to prepare a pilot in Tokyo by late 2026, subject to discussions with the relevant authorities, with a trained safety operator in each car during the initial phase and Uber operating through a licensed taxi partner in Japan.[39][46] The Nissan LEAF prototype for that pilot, built on NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion with dual DRIVE AGX Thor processors, 360 degree cameras, imaging radar and a forward facing lidar, was exhibited at NVIDIA GTC 2026 on 16 March.[40] Wayve and Uber said on 3 September 2026 that riders in London and other markets would also be introduced to the LEAF, starting in Tokyo later in 2026; that remains a plan.[21]

The Stellantis relationship has two layers. The 21 May 2026 agreement puts the Wayve AI Driver into Stellantis's STLA AutoDrive platform for hands-free, door-to-door supervised driving on highways and in cities, with the first vehicle integration planned in North America in 2028; Kendall said the teams had brought up a prototype on a Stellantis platform "in less than 2 months".[37] The 17 June 2026 announcement with Uber added a plan to develop and deploy Level 4 robotaxis at global scale, combining Stellantis vehicles built on what it calls L4-Ready Platforms, Wayve's software and Uber's network, with the stated goal of services across Europe, North America and beyond.[38]

## Supervised autonomous rides on Uber in London

### Road to launch

Wayve and Uber first announced a plan for public road trials of Level 4 vehicles in London on 10 June 2025.[14] The Department for Transport said the same day that pilots of taxi and bus-like self driving services would be brought forward by a year to spring 2026, ahead of the full Automated Vehicles Act 2024 coming into force from the second half of 2027.[32] Applications for the resulting automated passenger services pilot scheme opened on 22 May 2026, with the department naming Wayve among the firms expected to take part and noting that local authorities such as Transport for London would need to give consent.[33]

The London service did not launch under that scheme. On 5 August 2026 Transport for London granted private hire vehicle licences to a number of Wayve's all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E cars, equipped with the AI Driver plus surround cameras and radar, after inspections confirmed they met its policy and safety standards. The licences complete what the companies called the "triple-lock" for private hire trips, in which the operator, driver and vehicle must all be licensed by the same authority, and trips take place under the government's code of practice for automated vehicle trials and Uber's TfL private hire operator licence, with a trained, TfL licensed private hire driver on board to take over if needed.[27] The Guardian reported that 15 vehicles were licensed, and the BBC that operating without a driver would need a separate automated passenger services permit from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.[29][28] Wayve and Uber said more than 100,000 Londoners had joined Uber's interest list in the preceding eight weeks and that selected riders would get early trips "later this summer" ahead of a full public launch.[27]

Late August brought reports that fully driverless operation in London had slipped. The Guardian reported on 26 August that TfL had not yet published the guidance operators must follow to win its consent, that no vehicle had been approved by the DVSA, and that Kendall had told the Financial Times the company had never claimed it would run a fully driverless operation in 2026 and would not put a timeline on it; TfL's director of strategy, Christina Calderato, had told the London Assembly's transport committee in July that the authority would not accept applications "for some time".[30] The London Assembly had separately called in July for TfL to be given full oversight of driverless taxi trials, arguing that central government was overriding devolved powers, while the Department for Transport replied that permits cannot be issued in London without TfL's consent under the 2024 Act.[31]

### The launch

On 3 September 2026 Uber and Wayve announced that supervised autonomous rides were live in London, "marking the first time autonomous trips are available in the United Kingdom".[21][22] Wayve's own post described the service as available "across all of London (except airports)", and NVIDIA's automotive account congratulated the two companies the same morning.[44][43] Uber and Wayve said they were starting with a small number of vehicles and would grow "in-line with rider demand, readiness, and regulation"; Uber's Sarfraz Maredia told the Associated Press the deployment would start with under 20 vehicles and told the BBC the plan was to phase them in over several years.[21][26][23]

Government ministers endorsed the launch in the companies' release. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called it "a major milestone for the future of transport in London" and said the government wanted to support investment and skills "while recognising the important role that those working in the sector today will continue to play"; Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the vehicles "use homegrown, British AI from Wayve".[21] Kendall said Wayve was introducing the AI Driver to the public "for the first time right here in London, our home city and one of the most complex driving environments in the world".[21]

### What independent reporting added

The BBC's Zoe Kleinman, the first UK journalist to hail one as a customer before the public launch, reported that the trip through central London was mostly smooth, with the safety driver intervening once: as the car pulled away on a narrow side road the rear doors of a parked van appeared to swing open, the car braked sharply, an alarm sounded and the driver took the wheel. Wayve told the BBC the intervention was the driver's decision and that it was confident the AI would have handled the situation.[23] The Guardian, which also took a test drive in Westminster, reported that only 15 vehicles were licensed against more than 100,000 private hire vehicles in the capital, that the driver reads a short script explaining they will stay silent unless asked to take over, and that Kendall described the technology as "still maturing" while declining to put a date on driverless service: "I don't want to put a timeline on it, but we're pushing as fast as we can."[24] Maredia told the paper that nobody could yet operate autonomous vehicles more cheaply than a human-driven ride, "so that's going to take a while to prove".[24]

The Register, reporting from the launch event, described the Mustang rollout as feeling "a little like a stunt to steal a march on competitors such as Waymo" and noted that Wayve showed a Nissan LEAF on NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion as the follow-on vehicle, with integrated sensors, which a Wayve representative said would eventually be capable of running without a safety driver; the company hoped the LEAF would reach UK roads in 2027, depending on technology and regulation.[25] The Associated Press placed the launch in a European context in which Uber's first commercial robotaxi service on the continent, in Zagreb, also still requires a safety driver, and quoted Maredia that the approval process for removing the driver "is still playing out".[26] The GMB union's David McMullen warned of "unprecedented levels of social and economic disruption" if the rollout was not handled carefully, and Waymo, which had been testing in London for months, said it did not intend to launch a service with a human at the wheel.[23][24]

### Next steps

As of the launch, the Department for Transport told the BBC it was working towards a framework that would allow self driving cars without a safety driver on the roads in 2027, without giving a date.[23] Kendall told The Guardian that three things had to come together before Wayve would launch fully driverless services: a move to manufacturer-produced vehicles, the Nissan LEAF, validation of safety metrics on that platform, and regulatory approval, and that the company was working on all three in parallel.[24] The Tokyo pilot with Nissan and Uber remains planned for late 2026, and Wayve and Uber's stated plan covers 12 markets in total.[39][21]

## Comparison with peer companies

The competitive landscape has shifted significantly since 2017. First generation robotaxi programmes such as Waymo and Cruise have continued to focus on first party operations with sensor rich vehicles in geofenced urban environments. Tesla has continued to develop a camera only consumer driving assistance product and has converged toward an end to end neural network architecture similar in spirit to Wayve's. Mobileye operates an OEM oriented model that uses a modular stack with cameras, radar and optional lidar plus a crowdsourced Road Experience Management map. Wayve's distinctive combination of an end to end driving foundation model, a camera centric sensor suite, no reliance on high definition maps and a third party supplier business model has been positioned as a more capital efficient path to scaling autonomous driving. Independent observers have noted that the broader industry has moved toward end to end learning since 2023, partially validating the AV 2.0 thesis, though Wayve still has less public real world driving exposure than Waymo's US robotaxi fleets.[19] In London, Wayve's supervised service reached paying passengers before [Waymo](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/waymo), which was testing about 100 vehicles in the city and aiming for a fully driverless launch by the end of 2026, and before [Baidu](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/baidu)'s Apollo Go, which began testing there in late July 2026.[30][31]

## Regulatory and safety context

Wayve's UK testing is conducted under the framework established by the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 and the Automated Vehicles Act 2024, which created a formal regulatory framework for self driving in Great Britain including a safety standard and a permitting regime for automated passenger services and goods deliveries. The 2026 memorandum of understanding between Wayve and the Department for Business and Trade supports the operationalisation of that act, including the use of large scale simulation, in particular GAIA based generative world models, as evidence in safety cases.[13] In the United States Wayve's testing is conducted under state level autonomous vehicle testing regimes, particularly in California, and in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2024 Act is due to come fully into force from the second half of 2027. In June 2025 the government brought forward pilots of taxi and bus-like services without a safety driver to spring 2026, and in May 2026 it opened applications for the automated passenger services pilot scheme, under which the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency issues permits and local authorities such as TfL give consent.[29][32][33] The London service that launched in September 2026 sits outside that scheme: it runs on ordinary private hire licences and the code of practice for automated vehicle trials, which is why a licensed driver must remain in the driving seat.[27][29] As of late August 2026 TfL had not published its consent guidance and, by its own account, no operator had completed the first step of registering vehicles with the Vehicle Certification Agency.[30]

## Reception and criticism

Wayve has received broadly positive coverage for its technical research, with GAIA-1, GAIA-2 and LINGO-2 attracting attention from both the machine learning research community and the automotive press. The AV 2.0 framing has been credited with sharpening industry discussion about the trade offs between modular and end to end approaches to autonomy. Critical commentary has noted that the company's camera centric sensor philosophy understates the difficulty of demonstrating safety to regulators without interpretable intermediate representations, and that Wayve does not yet operate a paid driverless service at scale.[19] Wayve has responded by emphasising the role of GAIA world models in evaluation and LINGO natural language interfaces in interpretability.

The London launch drew a mix of reactions. The GMB union raised job loss concerns when the licences were granted and again at launch.[29][24] The Register questioned whether a supervised service with a driver in every car amounted to more than a public relations move, while allowing that the LEAF prototype was the more interesting development.[25] Reporters from the BBC and The Guardian who rode in the cars described competent driving with one driver intervention between them, and both outlets noted that regulators, rather than the technology, now set the pace for driverless operation in London.[23][24]
