**XPeng Inc.** is a Chinese smart-electric-vehicle maker that has repositioned itself as an artificial-intelligence company, building its driver-assistance software, in-house Turing AI chip, humanoid robots and flying [cars](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cars) on a single shared "[physical AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/physical_ai)" stack. Founded in Guangzhou in the mid-2010s and dual-listed on the New York Stock Exchange (XPEV) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (9868), XPeng delivered **429,445 vehicles in 2025**, up roughly 126 percent year on year, and posted its first ever quarterly net profit in the fourth quarter of that year. The company slipped back into losses during 2026, reporting a net loss of RMB 1.34 billion on revenues of RMB 19.74 billion in the second quarter. [6][33][40][42]

At its 5 November 2025 AI Day, chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said the company had upgraded its positioning to "a mobility explorer in the physical AI world and a global embodied intelligence company," arguing that "when digital and physical worlds integrate, it will give rise to 'Physical AI.'" That strategy rests on three concrete bets: smart cars built around the **Tianji XOS** operating system and the **XNGP** (formerly XPILOT) driver-assistance stack and its **VLA 2.0** [vision-language-action model](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/vision_language_action_model); the **Iron** humanoid robot family; and the **Land Aircraft Carrier** modular flying car from its subsidiary AeroHT (rebranded Aridge in October 2025). [14][34]

The robotics arm reached two milestones in the space of a fortnight in 2026. On 24 August it signed share purchase agreements raising over US$900 million at a post-money valuation of over US$6.3 billion, and on 8 September XPeng said it had commissioned humanoid robot production lines in Guangzhou, with an Iron robot walking off the line under its own power after assembly. [37][38]

**XPeng Inc.** (Chinese: 小鹏汽车; pinyin: *Xiǎopéng Qìchē*) is a Chinese designer and manufacturer of smart electric vehicles, autonomous driving software, AI silicon, [humanoid robot](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/humanoid_robot)s and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The listed issuer is an exempted company incorporated in the Cayman Islands, set up in December 2018 as part of the reorganisation ahead of the US listing; the group began operations in 2015 through the PRC company Chengxing Zhidong, and Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology Co., Ltd. is one of its PRC operating subsidiaries. Its principal executive offices are at No. 10 Cencun Fengzhuang Avenue, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, and it leases properties in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen and in Silicon Valley and San Diego in the United States, primarily for research and development. XPeng ranks among the most prominent of China's so-called "new force" automakers alongside [NIO](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nio) and Li Auto. [42]

Unlike many of its peers, XPeng has staked its identity on doing nearly every layer of the technology stack itself, from battery chemistry and electric drive units up through perception models, language models, in-house silicon, and the operating system that runs the cabin. By 2025 the company described itself less as an automaker than as an "AI Mobility Company" with three concrete physical-AI bets. [1][2]

## When was XPeng founded and by whom?

### Founding and early years (2015 to 2017)

Accounts of the founding date differ. XPeng's own 20-F says the group "began its operations in 2015 through Chengxing Zhidong, a PRC limited liability company". [42] CarNewsChina's history of the company puts the founding of Guangzhou Chengxing Zhidong Automobile Technology Co., Ltd. in January 2015 and names three co-founders: **Xia Heng** (Henry Xia) and **He Tao**, two engineers who left the New Energy arm of Guangzhou Automobile (GAC), and **He Xiaopeng**, a serial internet entrepreneur best known for co-founding the mobile browser company UCWeb, which Alibaba acquired in 2014 for about US$4.3 billion. Xia Heng and He Tao designed the first car while He Xiaopeng raised the money; the brand takes his given name ("Xpeng" anglicises 小鹏, his nickname). [3][4]

For the first three years He Xiaopeng remained at Alibaba while the founding engineers built early prototypes. In August 2017 he left Alibaba, joined the company full-time as chairman, and set the direction that would define XPeng going forward: a vertically integrated EV maker that would write its own driver-assistance code rather than license it from a Tier 1 supplier. He has held the dual roles of chairman and CEO since. [3]

### First product and IPO (2018 to 2020)

The first production model, the **G3** compact SUV, was unveiled at the 2018 [Consumer Electronics Show](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/consumer_electronics_show) in Las Vegas; XPeng's 20-F dates the start of G3 production to November 2018 and the start of production of its second model, the **P7** electric sedan, to May 2020. Both vehicles ran an early in-house driver-assistance system called **XPILOT**, putting XPeng ahead of most Chinese rivals on advanced driver assistance. [42]

In August 2020 XPeng completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XPEV, selling 114,693,333 ADSs at US$15.00 each for a total offering size of over **US$1.72 billion** and net proceeds of about US$1,655.7 million. A follow-on offering in December 2020 raised a further US$2,444.9 million net. The company completed its Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing and associated public offering in July 2021 (ticker 9868), raising about HK$15.82 billion net and giving it a dual-currency capital base at a time when several Chinese ADRs were under regulatory pressure in Washington. [42]

### Restructuring and recovery (2022 to 2024)

XPeng entered 2023 in difficulty after the disappointing launch of the G9 flagship SUV in late 2022, which suffered from a confusing trim ladder and forced a public price reset within days of going on sale. The company brought in former Great Wall Motor president **Wang Fengying** in early 2023 to overhaul sales channels and product planning. The reorganisation, combined with the rapid success of the **G6** crossover and the **MONA M03** mass-market sedan in 2024, drove a sharp recovery. [1][5]

## Vehicle lineup

As of the middle of 2026, XPeng sold or had announced the following passenger models, all built on the Smart Electric Platform Architecture (SEPA) family. The MONA brand sits at the entry level, the core XPeng lineup occupies the mid-market, and Ultra trims of the newest products are positioned to receive Level 4 software when it is released.

Delivery growth has been steep. XPeng delivered **190,068 vehicles** in 2024 and reached the cumulative **800,000 vehicle** milestone in mid-2025; the millionth vehicle came off the production line in November 2025. Full-year 2025 deliveries reached **429,445 units**, an annual increase of roughly 126 percent. [2][6][7]

XPeng held the global launch of the MONA L03, which it calls a next-generation AI SUV coupe, in Munich on 16 July 2026, releasing it into 65 countries and regions simultaneously; XPeng said the launch made it the first Asia-Pacific global automaker to adopt Google's Maps Auto SDK. Reporting second-quarter results on 24 August 2026, in a release filed on Form 6-K the following day, He Xiaopeng credited "the back-to-back success of the GX and MONA L03". Deliveries were 103,295 in the second quarter of 2026 and 204,004 for the year to 31 July. [40][41]

### Manufacturing footprint

XPeng operates two wholly owned smart-manufacturing bases in China:

* The **Zhaoqing plant** in Guangdong, opened in 2017, was originally rated at 100,000 units per year and was expanded under a Phase II agreement to 200,000 units per year, with further plans to reach 300,000 units. [8]
* The **Guangzhou Knowledge City plant** in Huangpu district, opened in 2023, contributes another roughly 200,000 units of annual capacity and produces the G6 and X9 lines.

The Wuhan plant, originally announced in 2020, has not entered the same scale of production as the Guangdong sites. Combined annual installed capacity exceeded 400,000 units by the end of 2025.

## How does XPeng's autonomous driving and AI software work?

XPeng's distinguishing claim has always been that it writes its driver-assistance stack end-to-end in-house. The company invested roughly **RMB 3.5 billion** (about US$485 million) in research and development in 2024 alone and grew the AI engineering team to more than 4,000 people. [1]

### XPILOT and the road to XNGP

The first generation of the system, **XPILOT 1.0**, shipped on the G3 in 2018 and offered conventional adaptive [cruise](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/cruise) and lane keeping. **XPILOT 3.0**, released on the P7 in 2021, added China's first production Highway **Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP)**, a feature comparable to Tesla's Navigate on Autopilot. **XPILOT 3.5**, launched on the LiDAR-equipped P5 sedan in 2021, extended NGP into city streets for the first time in a production vehicle, using a sensor stack of 32 sensors including 2 LiDAR units, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimeter-wave radars and 13 cameras. [9][10]

In 2023 the architecture was rebranded **XNGP** (XPilot Navigation Guided Pilot) and reorganised around a city-and-highway unified stack. By 2024 XPeng claimed XNGP coverage in every Chinese city with a navigable map, and the company began shipping vehicles configured for **mapless** operation, meaning the car would drive on roads it had never seen rather than relying on pre-built high-definition maps. [11]

### What is XPeng's end-to-end neural network architecture?

In May 2024 XPeng announced what it described as China's first mass-produced end-to-end model for [autonomous driving](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_driving), unifying perception, planning and control into a small set of large neural networks rather than the traditional pipeline of hand-coded modules. The architecture has three named components:

| Component | Role | Description |
|-----------|------|-------------|
| XNet | Perception backbone | Combines dynamic XNet, static XNet, and a 2K pure-vision occupancy network covering more than two million 3D grid cells around the vehicle |
| XPlanner | Planning and control | Large neural model that produces driving trajectories directly from perception output |
| XBrain | Reasoning layer | Large language model for scene understanding, traffic-rule reading and unusual-event handling |

This stack is rolled out through the **Tianji XOS** operating system (天玑), launched as XOS 5.1.0 on 20 May 2024 and described by the company as "the industry's first in-car OS to comprehensively apply AI technology to both smart cockpits and smart driving". [12] XPeng unveiled the next version, Tianji XOS 5.4, on 24 October 2024, built around AI driving, AI cockpit, AI chassis and AI connectivity, and made the P7+ the first model to carry it, with end-to-end AI smart driving standard rather than sold as an option or subscription. [13]

### What is XPeng VLA 2.0?

At its November 2025 AI Day in Guangzhou, XPeng unveiled **VLA 2.0**, a Vision-Language-Action model that the company says removes the explicit "language translation" middle step in the conventional V-L-A pipeline and produces driving actions directly from visual input. According to XPeng, VLA 2.0 runs on the vehicle with a parameter scale "of billions" on the 2,250 TOPS Ultra hardware, "while the parameter scale of models commonly used in the industry on vehicle ends is only in the tens of millions." Key claimed metrics: [14][34]

* A parameter scale "of billions" on the vehicle, against models "commonly used in the industry on vehicle ends" that XPeng puts "only in the tens of millions".
* Trained on close to 100 million driving video clips without data annotation, which XPeng equates to the extreme driving scenarios a human driver would meet in about 65,000 years of driving.
* Inference on three Turing chips delivering 2,250 TOPS on the Ultra version model.
* A new "Narrow Road NGP" function built on VLA 2.0, which XPeng said increased the average miles per intervention (MPI) on complex narrow roads by about 13 times.
* Pioneer users invited to try VLA 2.0 by the end of December 2025, with a full rollout to XPeng Ultra models in the first quarter of 2026.

The company has named [Volkswagen](https://www.volkswagen-group.com/en) as the first commercial customer for VLA 2.0, the first time a major Western automaker has agreed to license a Chinese-developed driving stack for use in its own vehicles. [14][15]

XPeng has also announced three **Robotaxi** models for trial operation in 2026, all built on the same Turing-and-VLA hardware base, and described them as the first full-stack self-developed and mass-produced Robotaxis from a Chinese automaker. Each Robotaxi carries four Turing AI chips for up to **3,000 TOPS** of on-board compute, operating without LiDAR or high-definition maps. He Xiaopeng had said publicly that the firm aimed to deliver an L4-level autonomous driving experience in China by the end of 2025, a target it did not meet. XPeng was first seen running open-road L4 tests on the unreleased GX flagship SUV in February 2026, and at Auto China in April 2026 the company still presented the GX as a Robotaxi prototype built for the L4 era rather than a shipped capability. The GX itself has since gone on sale, and He Xiaopeng named its launch alongside the MONA L03 in XPeng's second-quarter 2026 results. [14][34][35][36][40]

### What is the XPeng Turing AI chip?

The **Turing chip** is XPeng's in-house automotive [AI accelerator](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/ai_chip), first detailed in November 2024 and shipping in customer cars in 2025. Reporting on the G7 launch put single-chip computing power at approximately **750 TOPS**, equivalent to three [Nvidia](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nvidia) Orin X chips at about 254 TOPS each, with a 40-core processor, two neural processing units, and the ability to run large models with up to 30 billion parameters locally. Inside China Auto, reporting the same launch, said each Turing chip has three times the processing power of an Orin-X and twice that of Tesla's latest FSD chip. [16][17]

The Turing chip first shipped at scale on the **XPeng G7** mid-size SUV launched on 11 June 2025, which was marketed as the world's first mass-produced "AI car" with L3-class on-board compute. The G7's Ultra trim carries three Turing chips for a combined 2,250 TOPS, the same configuration that powers the next-generation Iron robot. Volkswagen has also nominated the Turing chip for use in its own vehicles. [17][34]

## Humanoid robotics

XPeng's humanoid robotics work is conducted by **XPENG Robotics**, formed around a robotics team acquired in 2020 and now central to the company's "physical AI" strategy. In its filings XPeng calls the unit the "XPeng Robotics Business" and holds it through **Dogotix Inc.**, a Cayman Islands company that was an indirect wholly owned subsidiary until an external financing round signed on 24 August 2026. The robotics group benefits from sharing perception models, training data infrastructure and Turing silicon with the automotive division, an integration that XPeng frequently cites as a structural advantage over pure-play [robotics](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/robotics) startups. The entity structure, the financing and the manufacturing programme are set out in detail on the XPENG Robotics page, and the robot's own specifications on the XPeng IRON page. [39]

### PX5 (October 2023)

The **XPENG PX5** bipedal robot was unveiled at the company's annual 1024 Tech Day on 24 October 2023 and updated through 2024. PX5 stands 1.5 metres tall, weighs 109 kg and has 22 degrees of freedom across the body, with each arm carrying 7 DOF and each hand carrying 11 DOF. The hands feature a rigid-soft hybrid drive that allows the robot to grip objects of varying shape; the arms have a load-to-self-weight ratio over 0.6 and a 0.05 mm repeated positioning accuracy. PX5 was demonstrated walking continuously for more than two hours over indoor and outdoor terrain, including stairs and uneven ground. The platform was earmarked for factory patrol, parts delivery and retail-store demonstration roles. [18]

### Iron / X20 (November 2024)

At its 2024 AI Day in November of that year, XPeng unveiled **Iron** (internal designation X20), a much more advanced humanoid that the company began deploying inside its own Guangzhou production lines almost immediately. The first-generation Iron stood 178 cm tall, weighed 70 kg, and reportedly had more than 60 joints driving 200 degrees of freedom across the full body, plus dexterous hands and an "Eagle Eye" 720-degree vision system. [19]

### Next-generation Iron (November 2025)

A refreshed Iron was unveiled at the **2025 XPENG AI Day** on 5 November 2025 in Guangzhou and immediately attracted global attention. Its movement was so fluid in its stage demonstration that online viewers accused XPeng of hiding a person inside the suit. According to New Atlas, He Xiaopeng and his team returned to the stage 24 hours later, on 6 November 2025, and took scissors to the robot's clothed leg to expose the machinery beneath. Specifications of the second-generation Iron include: [20][21]

| Attribute | Value |
|-----------|-------|
| Height | 178 cm |
| Weight | 70 kg |
| Degrees of freedom | 82 across the body and 22 per hand as announced in November 2025; 76 across the body and 21 per hand in XPeng's 2026 descriptions of the mass-production robot |
| AI compute | 3 Turing chips; 3,000 TOPS effective as announced in November 2025, up to 2,250 TOPS in XPeng's 2026 descriptions |
| Battery | All-solid-state pack as announced; reported in September 2026 to be a solid-liquid hybrid in the production robot |
| Reasoning model | VLT (Vision-Language-Task) trinity model |
| Skin | Full-body soft skin with embedded touch sensors |
| Body options | Male and female physiques offered |
| Production target | End of 2026 (mass production) |

XPeng partnered with Chinese steel producer **Baoshan Iron and Steel (Baosteel)** to deploy Iron in industrial inspection workflows, and the company stated that Iron will eventually move into retail stores, sales offices and home environments. The robot was the first humanoid that XPeng publicly stated had been engineered to automotive-grade reliability and quality standards. [22]

The published figures for the robot are not consistent between documents, and both compute figures were in circulation on the day of the unveiling. XPeng's own English-language release of 5 November 2025 gives the robot 3,000 TOPS, the same figure it uses for the four-chip Robotaxi, while using 2,250 TOPS for the three-chip Ultra vehicle; press reports of the same event, New Atlas among them, gave 2,250 TOPS for the robot. XPeng's own 2026 releases describe the three-chip configuration as delivering up to 2,250 TOPS. The XPeng IRON article sets both sets out side by side. [14][21][37][38]

### Financing and production line (2026)

On 24 August 2026 XPeng announced that its robotics business had signed share purchase agreements raising over US$900 million at a post-money valuation of over US$6.3 billion, in a round led by IDG Capital with participation from Gaorong Ventures and with [Tencent](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tencent) and [Alibaba](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/alibaba) as strategic investors. XPeng called it the largest single-round private capital raise in China's embodied AI industry to date. The Form 6-K filed the same day names the entity as Dogotix Inc., puts XPeng's holding at 81.97% once the subscription and a new equity incentive plan complete, and at about 68.41% if an optional additional investor subscribes and executive warrants are exercised in full. Dogotix stays a subsidiary and its results stay consolidated. [38][39]

On 8 September 2026 XPeng said its humanoid robot production lines had been commissioned and that an Iron unit had completed assembly and then walked off the line under its own power. The company said more than 80% of the lines' core processes are automated and described them as the world's first automated production lines for advanced humanoid robots, a ranking of its own. Commissioning is not the same as volume output. XPeng repeated that mass production is due by the end of 2026, with first commercial use in its own stores and on its campuses and an official launch with deliveries in China and overseas markets in 2027, and said gross margin per robot is expected to be significantly higher than that of its new energy vehicles. [37]

## Flying cars and AeroHT / Aridge

XPeng's eVTOL subsidiary, originally named **XPeng AeroHT** and rebranded **Aridge** in October 2025, develops modular and integrated flying vehicles. The flagship product is the **Land Aircraft Carrier**, a six-wheeled extended-range electric "mothership" minivan that carries a folding two-seat eVTOL aircraft in its rear cargo bay. Specifications of the Land Aircraft Carrier system: [23][24]

* Ground vehicle (mothership): 5,500 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, 2,000 mm tall, four seats, 800V silicon-carbide extended-range electric drive on six wheels with all-wheel drive.
* Air module: six-rotor configuration with twin-duct design, carbon-fibre construction, foldable arms, automatic landing and docking.
* Deployment: a single button press opens the rear hatch, slides the aircraft out on rails, drops the suspension and pulls the mothership clear, leaving the eVTOL ready to launch.
* Pricing and orders: under US$280,000; the company reported more than 7,000 intent orders by mid-2025.
* Manufacturing: a dedicated Guangzhou plant with planned annual capacity of more than 10,000 units, with first customer deliveries scheduled for 2026.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China accepted the type-certification application for the X3-F air module in March 2024, and certification work entered the compliance-confirmation phase in 2025. AeroHT also raised a Series B round of approximately US$250 million in mid-2025 to fund production scale-up. [25]

## Strategic partnerships

### Volkswagen Group (2023 onwards)

In July 2023, **Volkswagen Group** invested **US$700 million** in XPeng for a 4.99 percent stake and entered a multi-year framework agreement to co-develop two electric vehicles for the Chinese market under Volkswagen brands. [26][27]

The partnership has expanded several times since:

* The collaboration moved from Volkswagen's China-focused Compact Main Platform (CMP) onto its global **MEB** modular platform.
* Cooperation now covers electrical/electronic architecture (Volkswagen adopting XPeng's E/E platform for some China-built MEB vehicles), in-car compute, and ADAS software.
* The first joint vehicle, the **ID. UNYX 07**, entered mass production in March 2026 after an 18-month, China-led development cycle that Volkswagen executives described as the fastest in the group's history. [28]
* In late 2025 Volkswagen agreed to license XPeng's **VLA 2.0** autonomous driving stack for its own China-built EVs from 2026, the first time a Chinese automaker has been the upstream supplier of full-stack ADAS software to a major Western automaker. [15]

### DiDi Global (2023)

In August 2023, XPeng signed an agreement to acquire the smart-EV development assets of ride-hailing operator **DiDi Global** for up to **HK$5.835 billion (about US$744 million)**, paid primarily in newly issued Class A ordinary shares representing about 3.25 percent of XPeng's enlarged share capital. The deal transferred DiDi's intellectual property, technology and EV manufacturing and R&D units to XPeng and seeded the new mass-market **MONA** brand, whose first product, the **MONA M03**, launched on 27 August 2024 and exceeded 166,000 cumulative deliveries within its first 12 months. DiDi can earn additional incentive shares of up to 5 percent of XPeng's equity if MONA reaches 180,000 unit annual sales for two consecutive years. [29][30]

### Alibaba and other backers

Alibaba was an early outside investor and remains a significant shareholder. Other backers have included Xiaomi, IDG Capital, Morningside, Sequoia China and Guangzhou municipal vehicles. He Xiaopeng remains the largest individual shareholder.

Full-year 2025 revenue grew about 87.7 percent to **RMB 76.72 billion**. In the fourth quarter of 2025, XPeng reported its **first ever quarterly net profit**, of approximately **RMB 380 million**, on revenues of RMB 22.25 billion (up 38.2 percent year on year), with quarterly gross margin rising to 21.3 percent from 14.4 percent a year earlier. Overseas deliveries reached 45,008 units in 2025, nearly doubling year on year and accounting for more than 15 percent of total revenue. The company has guided for half of total sales to come from outside China by the end of 2030 and has set a 2030 target of one million annual overseas vehicles. [6][7][33]

That profit did not hold. For the second quarter of 2026 XPeng reported revenues of RMB 19.74 billion, up 8.0 percent year on year and 51.5 percent quarter on quarter, gross margin of 20.7 percent, vehicle margin of 12.1 percent, and a net loss of RMB 1.34 billion on 103,295 deliveries. Its cash position stood at RMB 40.48 billion at 30 June 2026, and the retail network had reached 740 stores across 257 cities. [40]

## International expansion

XPeng began exporting in 2020 with its first overseas market in **Norway**. By the end of 2025 the company operated in more than **30 markets** worldwide, including 28 European countries, with the European retail footprint exceeding 290 outlets. [31][32]

Markets entered include the Nordic region, Western Europe (Germany, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Austria, UK, Italy, Spain, Portugal), Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia), the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The European go-to-market mix combines directly operated stores in Denmark, dealer-owned sales companies in Germany and France, and import-distributor partnerships elsewhere. The company has stated it intends to begin local European production within the decade. [31]

## How does XPeng compare with Tesla and other rivals?

Within China, XPeng competes most directly with [Tesla](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tesla)'s China business and the other "new force" automakers such as [NIO](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/nio), Li Auto and Leapmotor, as well as the broader market leaders [BYD](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/byd) and Geely. XPeng tends to position itself as the most software-forward of the new forces, with a heavier engineering bias and a faster cadence of releases for its driver-assistance system than its peers. The company's 2025 announcement that it would supply VLA 2.0 to Volkswagen and operate its own [autonomous vehicle](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/autonomous_vehicle) Robotaxi service marks a clear departure from the pure consumer-EV business model.

In humanoid robotics XPeng competes with [Tesla](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/tesla)'s Optimus programme, Figure AI, 1X, Sanctuary AI, Boston Dynamics, Unitree, Agility Robotics and the broader cohort of new humanoid startups inside [China AI](https://aiwiki.ai/wiki/china_ai) ecosystems such as Unitree, UBTECH and Fourier. XPeng's structural advantages here are vertical integration with its own Turing silicon, the ability to use its automotive supply chain for joints, batteries and casting, and access to large amounts of real-world driving and factory data for training perception models.

## Corporate governance and culture

He Xiaopeng remains chairman and CEO. Co-founder **Xia Heng** serves as president of the company and oversees product engineering, while **He Tao** is the chief technology officer. Wang Fengying joined as company president in 2023 and led the sales-and-channel restructuring credited with the 2024 to 2025 turnaround. The company holds an annual technology event on **24 October** ("1024 Tech Day", a wordplay on the binary kilo) and an annual **AI Day** in November where it announces software architecture and robotics roadmaps.

XPeng is recognised as one of the most engineering-driven of the Chinese automakers; its 2024 listing on Fortune China's "Tech 50" and "China 500" rankings reflected this positioning. The company invested approximately RMB 3.5 billion in R&D in 2024 and was on track to invest at a higher rate in 2025 as the Turing chip entered production. [1][2]

## Controversies and challenges

* **G9 launch (September 2022).** The G9's complex pricing structure and confusing trim ladder triggered customer complaints almost immediately after launch, prompting XPeng to publicly apologise and re-issue the price list within 48 hours. The episode triggered the management reshuffle that brought Wang Fengying into the company.
* **Iron "is it real?" demonstration (November 2025).** The next-generation Iron walked across the AI Day stage on 5 November with such fluid human-like motion that some online viewers accused XPeng of staging the reveal with a costumed actor. He Xiaopeng and his team returned to the stage the following day and cut the robot's clothed leg open to expose the machinery beneath. He called it a "rather forced last-resort solution". [21]
* **Profitability.** Despite multi-year revenue growth, XPeng did not report a positive net quarter until Q4 2025.
* **Geopolitics.** As a Chinese ADR with a major U.S. listing, XPeng has been exposed to U.S.-China trade tensions, U.S. tariffs on Chinese EVs, and EU countervailing-duty investigations into Chinese EV exports.
