Introduction

Background

Traditional machine learning models typically process and transform an entire input sequence into a fixed-size representation that can then be used for prediction. Attention mechanisms aim to address these drawbacks by enabling models to focus only on relevant portions of an input sequence.

How Attention Works in NLP Models

Dot product attention is simply another variant of multiplicative attention that uses this same dot product as its attention factor.

Applications of Attention Mechanisms

Attention mechanisms have been employed in a variety of machine learning tasks, such as language modeling, machine translation, image captioning and speech recognition. Natural language processing has seen attention mechanisms improve model performance by allowing the model to focus on important parts of an input sequence like important words or phrases. Machine translation models use attention mechanisms for alignment between source and target sequences which allows them to produce more accurate translations. Computer vision models utilize attention mechanisms to focus on specific regions of an image for more precise image captions.
