Ensemble methods are a group of techniques in machine learning that combine the predictions of multiple models, or "base learners," to improve overall predictive performance. The idea behind ensemble methods is that the aggregation of the predictions of several individual models can lead to a more robust and accurate result than any single model alone.

Types of Ensemble Methods

There are several widely-used ensemble methods in machine learning, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Some common methods include:

  • Bagging (Bootstrap Aggregating): Bagging involves training multiple base learners, typically decision trees, on different samples of the training data, which are generated using bootstrapping.   • Boosting: Boosting is an iterative technique that adjusts the weights of the training instances in each iteration. At every step, the algorithm focuses more on the instances that were misclassified by the previous model, resulting in a sequence of models that work together to improve prediction accuracy.
  • Stacking (Stacked Generalization): Stacking involves training multiple base learners on the same dataset and then using their predictions as input to another model, known as the meta-model or meta-learner. The meta-learner is responsible for combining the base learners' predictions to generate the final prediction.

Benefits of Ensemble Methods

Ensemble methods have several advantages in machine learning:

  • Improved accuracy: Combining multiple models can lead to better predictive performance as individual errors are likely to be averaged out when predictions are aggregated.
