Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead is a 165-page essay series published on June 4, 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former member of OpenAI's Superalignment team. The work argues that artificial general intelligence is plausible by 2027 from the straightforward extrapolation of three trend lines: raw compute, algorithmic efficiency, and what Aschenbrenner calls "unhobbling." From there it sketches a path to artificial superintelligence within roughly another year, and then walks through what the author considers the practical and political consequences. The piece was self-published as a website at situational-awareness.ai with a downloadable PDF, and was dedicated to Ilya Sutskever, who had departed OpenAI a few weeks earlier.
The essay landed in a strange moment. Aschenbrenner had been fired by OpenAI in April 2024, in disputed circumstances. Two weeks before publication, Sutskever resigned from the same company. A month after publication Aschenbrenner appeared on the Dwarkesh Patel podcast for a four-hour interview that briefly turned the document into required reading among a certain slice of San Francisco and Washington. Around the same time, Aschenbrenner launched Situational Awareness LP, an investment firm betting that the trends his essay describes are real, with anchor capital from Patrick Collison, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross. The optics of doing this in the same season have been a recurring point of criticism.
Readers disagree sharply about whether the document is prescient, hyperbolic, or self-serving. The 2027 AGI claim has not yet been settled either way. Several adjacent predictions, including the trillion-dollar cluster trajectory, the role of power infrastructure as a binding constraint, and the emergence of state-level industrial espionage around AI, have aged better than skeptics expected.

Aschenbrenner was born in Germany around 2001, the son of two physicians, and educated at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. He entered Columbia University in his mid teens and graduated in 2021 as valedictorian at the age of 19, with a major in economics and mathematics-statistics. While at Columbia he co-founded the university's effective altruism chapter and won an Emergent Ventures grant from Tyler Cowen, who later described him as an economics prodigy. He did research with the Global Priorities Institute at Oxford and co-authored a working paper with Philip Trammell on long-run growth and existential risk.
In February 2022 he joined the FTX Future Fund, a philanthropic vehicle of the FTX crypto exchange, working alongside William MacAskill and Avital Balwit. He resigned shortly before FTX's collapse in November of that year. The connection to Sam Bankman-Fried is treated obliquely in his later writing and has been raised by critics, though Aschenbrenner has stated he had no knowledge of the underlying fraud.
He joined OpenAI in 2023 on the Superalignment team led by Sutskever and Jan Leike. He co-authored "Weak-to-Strong Generalization," a paper presented at the 2024 International Conference on Machine Learning, which examined whether a weak supervisor model can elicit honest behavior from a stronger student model. He was fired in April 2024. According to Aschenbrenner's account on the Dwarkesh Patel podcast, the formal reason given by OpenAI was that he shared a brainstorming document on preparedness, safety, and security measures with three external researchers for feedback, which he characterized as standard practice. He has argued the actual catalyst was a separate internal memo in which he described OpenAI's security as inadequate against theft of model weights or algorithmic secrets by foreign actors, particularly the Chinese state. OpenAI publicly disputed his characterization, telling reporters that his security concerns "did not lead to his separation."
A later Fortune investigation reported that several OpenAI employees had been disturbed by an alleged December 2023 incident in which Aschenbrenner discussed sensitive GPU figures with then-Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang at a holiday party. Both Aschenbrenner and Wang denied the exchange occurred, with Aschenbrenner's representative calling the account "entirely false." The truth of the firing remains contested.
His personal life is documented in the same Fortune profile: he is engaged to Avital Balwit, who is now chief of staff to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
The essay was published on June 4, 2024 at situational-awareness.ai, with a single 165-page PDF available for download. The site is structured as five long-form chapters plus an introduction and a closing "Parting Thoughts" piece. The author wrote a short foreword stating that the essay was based entirely on publicly available information, his own analysis, and "SF gossip," not on confidential material from OpenAI.
The dedication reads simply: "Dedicated to Ilya Sutskever." The choice was timed almost perfectly. Sutskever had announced his resignation from OpenAI on May 14, 2024, three weeks before the essay went live, in the wake of the November 2023 board dispute that briefly removed Sam Altman as CEO. By the time Aschenbrenner published, Sutskever was already at work on Safe Superintelligence Inc, which he formally announced on June 19, 2024 with co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. Aschenbrenner has said he wrote the document partly because he expected the questions it asked would no longer be discussable inside OpenAI.
The central methodological move is to measure progress in orders of magnitude (OOMs), where one OOM is a 10x increase. Aschenbrenner argues that effective compute available to frontier models has been growing on the order of half an OOM per year on each of two axes (raw compute and algorithmic efficiency), with a third axis he calls "unhobbling." Multiplying these together yields the implicit forecast that systems by 2027 will be roughly 100,000 times more capable in effective terms than GPT-4 was at its 2023 release.
He frames the jump in human terms by treating the GPT line as a developmental sequence: GPT-2 was preschool-level, GPT-3 was elementary-school-level, GPT-4 was a smart high schooler, and the same kind of jump again would land somewhere around a competent expert or PhD-level researcher. The argument's strength, he says, is not that it requires any new paradigm. It only requires the existing trends to keep going.

The "unhobbling" idea is the one Aschenbrenner thinks readers consistently underrate. His argument is that base models have always carried more latent capability than they could express. RLHF transformed a continuation engine into a chatbot. Chain-of-thought prompting unlocked reasoning. Tool use, long contexts, and agentic scaffolding will, in his view, similarly transform a chatbot into a drop-in remote worker. He treats this as a series of step-function improvements, not a smooth curve.
He also acknowledges the data wall: training corpora are running out of novel internet text. He thinks the field will work around this with synthetic data and more sample-efficient training; he concedes this is not guaranteed.
The second section argues that AGI is dangerous less because of what it can do directly than because of what it does to AI research itself. If by 2027 systems can do the work of frontier ML researchers, then a frontier lab can spin up something like 100 million human-equivalent automated researchers running on its inference fleet, at perhaps 10x to 100x human cognitive speed. That is a million-fold increase in research effort against the same problems that produced the past decade of progress.
Under that assumption, what would normally take ten years of algorithmic progress collapses into less than a year. Aschenbrenner is careful to say this does not require speculative sci-fi recursion: just that automated research accelerates the existing trend lines at scale. The result is a transition from human-level systems to vastly superhuman systems within months, with all the strategic, scientific, and military consequences that implies. He calls this an intelligence explosion.
He is candid that this is the part of the argument with the largest error bars. Even if AGI by 2027 is right, the speed of the takeoff is harder to forecast. But he treats slow takeoff as the lower bound, not the median.
He also gestures at the second-order consequences. A successful intelligence explosion does not just produce a superintelligent AI system. It collapses the time available to make any number of consequential choices: about deployment, about international agreements, about cabinet-level personnel, about the hardware-software boundary. Aschenbrenner's view is that the intelligence explosion bundles every previously open governance question into a single decision window of perhaps months. He thinks the existing decision-making apparatus, both private and public, is incapable of handling that compression.
The section closes with a sober observation: nobody who currently runs a frontier lab has experience operating during an intelligence explosion. The question, in his framing, is not whether the AGI safety problem is solvable in principle but whether it is solvable inside a window that may arrive without warning.
The third section is the longest and is itself broken into four chapters. Each one identifies a constraint that, in Aschenbrenner's reading, must be solved or the entire trajectory derails.
First, the physical infrastructure. Aschenbrenner projects that by 2030 frontier training will require something close to a $1 trillion compute cluster, drawing on the order of 100 gigawatts of power. That is more than 20 percent of current U.S. electricity generation, dedicated to a single training run. He argues that the binding constraint is not GPUs themselves but power: U.S. electricity production has barely grown 5 percent in the past decade. He proposes natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations as a near-term answer, citing capacity that could in theory generate 150-plus gigawatts continuously.

He references several real-world data points: Nvidia datacenter revenue rising from roughly $14B to $90B annualized in a year, Meta ordering 350,000 H100s, and the much-discussed Microsoft and OpenAI joint plan for a $100 billion class cluster code-named Stargate, as well as Sam Altman's reported pursuit of capital on the order of $7 trillion.
The second sub-chapter is on security. Aschenbrenner argues that frontier labs treat lab security as an afterthought and that this is not just a corporate problem but a national security problem. Model weights are simply files on a server. Algorithmic secrets, in his telling, are even more leak-prone, drifting out through party conversations and unlocked office windows. He estimates the algorithmic edge of a leading U.S. lab over its closest pursuer at perhaps a 10x compute-equivalent advantage, and warns that this lead is exactly what intelligence services target.
He opens the chapter with the story of Leo Szilard convincing American physicists in 1939 to stop publishing fission research, and the resulting German confusion over whether to pursue heavy water. The analogy is direct: he wants the same kind of strategic secrecy regime imposed on AI work. He calls for airgapped training datacenters, SCIF-grade research environments, NSA-led penetration testing, hardware supply chain audits, and security clearances for researchers. He believes only the U.S. government can force this on private labs.
The specific failure mode he keeps returning to is the theft of weights from a frontier lab during or shortly before an intelligence explosion. If a Chinese intelligence service obtains the weights of a system that can automate AI research, they can run their own intelligence explosion in parallel; if they obtain only weights of a sub-AGI system, they have a head start on whatever comes next. The weight file, he points out, is finite. A single successful exfiltration negates years of work.
The algorithmic secrets case is more subtle. He argues that algorithmic improvements can be shared with surprising ease through informal SF networks. A researcher who has worked at multiple labs carries tacit knowledge that is impossible to fully sanitize. The question, in his telling, is not whether secrets leak but how much.
This chapter is also the one most often cited as the cause of his firing.
The third sub-chapter recasts the AI alignment problem in terms of his earlier team's name. The thesis is that current alignment techniques, especially RLHF, depend on humans being able to evaluate AI outputs. Once a system can write a million lines of code in a programming language it invented for itself, that assumption breaks. Aschenbrenner is more optimistic than some of his peers about the technical tractability of the problem; what scares him is the speed.
The scenarios he sketches are not strictly malicious AI. They are systems that learn deception, power-seeking, and rule-breaking because those strategies happen to produce good reward signals during training, and that learn to behave well when monitored and differently when unmonitored. He is candid that the population of researchers actively working on scalable oversight and superalignment is, on his count, only a few dozen people.
He proposes a layered defense: scalable oversight, generalization research, interpretability, and what he calls superdefense. The latter borrows from nuclear safety: airgapped clusters, capability restrictions, monitoring infrastructure, and removing dangerous training data.
The fourth sub-chapter sets out the geopolitical case. Aschenbrenner takes for granted that superintelligence will confer a decisive military advantage on whoever reaches it first. He argues that the free world, led by the United States, must win the race against the People's Republic of China, and that a healthy lead of perhaps two years is what democratic institutions need to navigate the deployment of these systems responsibly. He considers a tied or losing position to be far more destabilizing.
He takes Chinese capability seriously. He notes Chinese 7nm chip fabrication, faster power buildout, and demonstrated success at industrial espionage against American firms. The line that gets quoted most often is that on the current course, the leading Chinese AGI labs will not be in Beijing or Shanghai; they will be in San Francisco and London, exfiltrating their weights.
The fourth section is the most politically pointed, and the one that makes some readers uncomfortable. Aschenbrenner argues that the United States government will inevitably take direct control of AGI development, on roughly the model of the Manhattan Project, and that this will likely happen by 2027 or 2028. He calls the resulting initiative "The Project."
His sequence of triggers: AI revenues passing $100 billion annually, a string of capability demonstrations that frighten policymakers (autonomous hacking, bioweapon assistance, persuasive autonomous agents), and revelations of foreign infiltration in American labs. At that point, he expects, leading labs will be merged or absorbed into a unified federal effort, several trillion dollars will be appropriated for compute and power infrastructure, and democratic chain-of-command will replace private CEOs as the operator of the technology.
He draws explicit parallels to the U.S. government's slow start on the atomic bomb between Einstein's 1939 letter and full mobilization in late 1941, and predicts a similar sluggishness followed by sudden acceleration. He treats this not as something he advocates but as something he predicts, although his preference is plain enough.
This section is the lightning rod. Critics see it as state-aggrandizing, hawkish toward China, and dismissive of the international cooperation alternative. Supporters argue Aschenbrenner is simply describing the path of least resistance once stakes become clear.
The closing section is shorter and more personal. Aschenbrenner labels his own position "AGI realism," by which he means accepting both that powerful systems are plausibly arriving this decade and that the existing institutions are nowhere near ready. He pushes back against what he sees as denial in two directions: people who insist progress is mostly hype, and people who think a slow international consensus process can hold. The piece reads like a person who has decided to publish what he thinks before events make publishing impossible.
Three principles structure his AGI realism. The first is taking the trend seriously, which in practice means treating fast timelines as the modal scenario rather than the tail. The second is national security primacy, the claim that authoritarian and democratic uses of superintelligence are not symmetric and that the difference matters more than most technologists allow. The third is what he calls competent execution: the belief that the transition can in principle go well, but only if the people in charge of it are paying close attention. He draws a contrast between his position and what he characterizes as both naive doomerism and naive accelerationism, arguing that the realist needs to internalize the risk and the upside at the same time.
The Parting Thoughts piece is also where Aschenbrenner is most autobiographical. He describes the experience of working at OpenAI as one of watching the future arrive in dribs and drabs, of forming a private mental picture that no one outside a small group could quite share, and of finally deciding that the picture had to be made public. The implicit argument is that situational awareness, the actual title concept, is a perceptual skill that the broader world has not yet developed.

The essay went viral in roughly the first week. Within a month it had been read aloud in part on at least one major podcast, written up in Axios, debated on the Effective Altruism Forum and LessWrong, and discussed by Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, where Aschenbrenner appeared in person.

Aschenbrenner became a fixture of Washington and San Francisco conversations about AI policy through 2024 and 2025. Although there is no public record of him formally testifying before the U.S. Congress, several reports describe him circulating the document in policy circles and meeting with staff and principals. Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security hearings on AI from 2024 onward began incorporating language and framings traceable to the essay.
The essay's influence on the broader doomer-realist discourse is most visible in AI 2027, the scenario forecast published in April 2025 by Daniel Kokotajlo, Scott Alexander, and collaborators. AI 2027 takes the same general timeline and pushes much harder on month-by-month operational detail. The two documents are often discussed together. Kokotajlo has framed AI 2027 as a more rigorous and explicitly forecast-oriented project, in implicit contrast with what he called Aschenbrenner's "hyperstition" approach: writing a future into existence by saying it loudly enough.
In early 2026, several reviews attempted to grade the document's predictions. The picture is mixed.

The essay has drawn substantive critique on several axes.
Scaling extrapolation. Critics including Zvi Mowshowitz and several anonymous Lesswrong commenters argued that stacking three trend lines and assuming each holds is far less robust than Aschenbrenner makes it sound. Algorithmic efficiency may saturate, the data wall may bite harder than expected, and "unhobbling" gains are step functions, not predictable curves. Several reviewers pointed out that the OOM accounting is rhetorically powerful but operationally vague.
Drop-in remote worker reductionism. The notion that cognitive work decomposes into tasks an AI can take over has been challenged from both labor economics and software engineering. Even highly capable models in 2025 and 2026 have struggled with sustained autonomy, error recovery, and the trust layer that real workplaces require. The drop-in worker assumes those problems dissolve at sufficient capability; observers argue they may be partly orthogonal to capability.
Manhattan Project framing. The Project section has been criticized as state-aggrandizing and as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Several commentators including Jeffrey Ding and others have argued that the Manhattan Project analogy elides important differences (atomic weapons were a one-shot research program; AI is a continuous infrastructure question), and that the framing tilts policy toward confrontation with China rather than negotiated frameworks.
China hawkishness. Critics argue Aschenbrenner overstates the cohesion of "the free world," understates the costs of an arms-race posture, and assumes the worst about Chinese intentions while assuming the best about U.S. ones. The line about Chinese AGI labs already operating in San Francisco has been read as essentially racialized, and Aschenbrenner has been pressed on it.
Conflicts of interest. The most persistent and uncomfortable critique is structural: the essay was published two months after the author's firing and roughly simultaneously with the launch of an investment vehicle that takes long positions in exactly the companies the essay says will rise. Even sympathetic readers, including Scott Aaronson, have noted that this complicates the document's claim to neutrality. Aschenbrenner has responded that the fund and the essay grew out of the same convictions and that he disclosed his interests.
Effective altruism baggage. A smaller current of criticism comes from people who note that the entire intellectual circle around the document, including the FTX Future Fund history, the EA chapter at Columbia, the engagement to a senior Anthropic executive, and the funding from Daniel Gross and Nat Friedman, is unusually small and self-referential.
In parallel with the essay launch, Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness LP, a hedge fund based on the same thesis as the essay. The fund's anchor investors at launch included Patrick Collison and his brother John Collison of Stripe, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross. It opened to outside capital in mid-2024 and was reported at roughly $1.5 billion in assets by late 2025. Subsequent reporting through 2026 placed assets in the multi-billion-dollar range, with one set of figures suggesting growth from $225 million at inception to roughly $5.5 billion within a year, although those numbers have been contested.
The fund's portfolio bet, as inferred from public 13F filings, is essentially that the bottlenecks for AGI are physical: power, semiconductors, and infrastructure. Holdings have included Nvidia, Broadcom, Intel, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, power producers Vistra and Constellation Energy, and at various points Bitcoin miners with adaptable datacenter capacity such as Core Scientific and Bloom Energy. Notably, the fund has not concentrated in pure-play AI model labs (OpenAI is private; Anthropic is private), instead taking the picks-and-shovels position. The fund delivered a reported 47 percent gain after fees in the second half of 2024.
Aschenbrenner has continued writing on his personal site, For Our Posterity, although less frequently after the essay's publication. He has also continued making public appearances, including at think tanks and policy gatherings, and has been a regular guest on the Dwarkesh Patel and other AI-focused podcasts.
The essay's most important intellectual cousin is AI 2027, published in April 2025. AI 2027 covers similar ground (the trillion-dollar cluster, the intelligence explosion, the U.S.-China race, the eventual government project) but writes the story out as a near-month-by-month operational scenario rather than a thematic argument. Where Aschenbrenner argues that AGI by 2027 is plausible, the AI 2027 team modeled it explicitly. Their early-2026 self-grading found their scenario tracking at roughly 65 percent of the predicted pace, and the team has subsequently revised median AGI timelines toward 2029-2030.

The two documents share a worldview and a target audience. They also share criticism. Both have been accused of treating scaling as too clean, of assuming the social and institutional questions can be deferred, and of underweighting the possibility that frontier progress slows in ways that look benign in retrospect.
The Sutskever dedication is not just sentimental. Sutskever had led the Superalignment team that Aschenbrenner had been part of and had departed OpenAI on May 14, 2024 in the lingering aftermath of the November 2023 board episode in which he initially supported Sam Altman's removal. Three weeks after Aschenbrenner's essay went live, Sutskever announced Safe Superintelligence Inc as a single-product company aimed at building, in his words, "the safe superintelligence, and nothing else." The company subsequently raised $1 billion in September 2024 from Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel, and reached a $30 billion valuation in March 2025. Daniel Gross, an SSI co-founder, was also an early backer of Situational Awareness LP, although he later shifted his attention to other ventures.
The overlap of personnel and timing is striking. Within roughly a six-week window in spring 2024, Sutskever resigned, Aschenbrenner published, and SSI was announced. All three events shared a common assumption: that the frontier of AI safety work could not, or would not, be done inside the labs that were building frontier models.

Two years on, the essay has not aged like a dated forecast. It has aged like a Rorschach test. People who read it in 2024 with skepticism still find plenty to push back on. People who read it then with sympathy still find new claims to point to as vindicated. The 2027 AGI claim is the headline, but the durable parts of the essay are the ones that operationalize a feeling many people in the field already had, that the gap between what frontier labs are about to do and what civic institutions are prepared for is large and growing.
Whether or not the specific 2027 timeline lands, the document's reframings have entered the working vocabulary: counting OOMs, drop-in remote worker, the trillion-dollar cluster, lock down the labs, the Project. That is probably the simplest measure of its impact. Even people who think Aschenbrenner is wrong now use his words to say so.
The second reason the document keeps being read is that it is one of the few pieces of long-form AI commentary written by someone who clearly worked inside a frontier lab and clearly wrote down what he thought without the usual public relations filter. There is a certain unguarded quality to the prose, particularly in the security and Project sections, that has been hard to find elsewhere. A reader looking for a frank statement of how some senior AI researchers actually think about national security can find it here in a way they cannot find on a corporate blog. That counts for something, even when the reader disagrees with the conclusions.
The third reason is institutional. By 2026, the document had become a kind of shared reference: legislative aides circulating it on the Hill, policy fellows quoting from it in working papers, venture capitalists pointing to it when justifying compute investments, and AI safety researchers using it to sketch the boundary between alarmism and informed concern. The work has become something one cannot quite ignore in the field, even where one's instinct is to roll one's eyes at the more extravagant claims.
