Stanford University, legally Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private, nonprofit research university in Stanford, California. Leland and Jane Stanford founded it in 1885 in memory of their son, Leland Stanford Jr., and the university opened to students on October 1, 1891. Identity and organization

The university's legal name retains "Junior" because it commemorates the founders' only child. Stanford is organized as a private, nonprofit institution. Its seven schools are Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Sciences; Law; Medicine; and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Engineering, Humanities and Sciences, and Sustainability offer undergraduate and graduate degrees, while Business, Education, Law, and Medicine are graduate professional schools. The sustainability school, launched in 2022, was Stanford's first new school in 75 years. Stanford is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. [10][17][46]

Stanford describes undergraduate education as organized around 67 major fields and graduate education as comprising about 150 programs. Those program counts change as degrees and departmental structures change, so they should not be read as fixed totals. Most undergraduates live on campus, and the university operates residential, academic, research, athletic, and cultural facilities as parts of the same institution. Its health-care affiliates and the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are closely connected to Stanford but have distinct legal or financial boundaries that matter when comparing institutional statistics. The university's main academic census is also narrower than some broader community totals. In autumn 2025, Stanford recorded 7,289 undergraduates and 10,025 graduate students. The undergraduate profile reported a 92 percent six-year graduation rate for the most recent cohort then measured. The graduate count covers students in master's, doctoral, and professional programs, but it does not turn residents, fellows, staff, or continuing-studies participants into enrolled degree students. Founding and early development

Stanford's main campus lies within the ancestral homeland of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. The university states that its founders acquired the parcels that became the campus in the 1870s and 1880s. Stanford developed a land acknowledgement with the tribe in 2021, and the university has supported archaeological, educational, and cultural work concerning the Ohlone presence in the region. The acknowledgement provides historical context for accounts of the property before the Stanfords acquired it. [18]

Leland Stanford made much of his fortune through the Central Pacific Railroad and related enterprises. Stanford's Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project documents the central role of Chinese laborers in constructing the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad. The project reports that, at peak periods, 10,000 to 15,000 Chinese workers made up as much as 90 percent of the Central Pacific workforce. Scholarly work associated with the project emphasizes both their skilled labor and the discriminatory conditions under which they worked. The railroad fortune that helped fund the university therefore cannot be separated from that labor history. [19][20]

Leland and Jane Stanford bought an 8,180-acre stock farm near Palo Alto before creating the university. After their 15-year-old son died of typhoid fever in 1884, they decided to establish a university as a memorial to him. The university was founded in 1885 under its Founding Grant. The founders envisioned a coeducational, nonsectarian institution that would combine liberal education with practical study in engineering, agriculture, and other fields. The architectural firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge collaborated with landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted on the initial campus plan. Stanford opened on October 1, 1891, with David Starr Jordan as its first president. The original stock farm's 8,180 acres are a founding-era figure; Stanford's official current total is 8,353 acres. The university entered a severe financial crisis after Leland Stanford died in 1893. Jane Stanford used personal resources and exercised strong administrative influence to keep the university operating. A typhoid epidemic in 1903 killed nine students and sickened many others. Jane Stanford died in 1905, and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake killed two people on campus, damaged buildings, and forced changes to the original architectural program. Stanford expanded professional education over the following decades through programs and schools in law, medicine, education, and business; the Graduate School of Business opened in 1925. [17]

The founding design joined a residential campus to a working landscape rather than placing a set of buildings in an established city center. The Main Quad and its arcades became the architectural core, but earthquake damage and financial constraints prevented completion of the original plan as designed. Farms, laboratories, student residences, and athletic grounds developed around that core over time. This physical history helps explain why "the campus" can mean different things: the academic center, the larger university landholding, or all Stanford-operated sites. The 8,353-acre current figure refers to the broader landholding reported by Stanford, not only the built academic district. [4][17]

Jordan's legacy has been reassessed because of his advocacy of eugenics. In 2020, a university committee concluded that he had promoted eugenic ideas and used his office to advance policies derived from them. Stanford's Board of Trustees consequently removed Jordan's name from Jordan Hall and three other campus features. The committee distinguished historical description from institutional honor: renaming did not erase Jordan's presidency, but it ended the use of university place names as commemorations of him. Stanford also removed a statue of Louis Agassiz from the facade of Jordan Hall after reviewing his advocacy of polygenism and racial hierarchy. [21][22]

Growth as a research university

Stanford's transformation accelerated during and after World War II. Frederick Terman, an electrical engineer who later became dean of engineering and provost, encouraged faculty research, graduate training, and relationships with electronics firms and federal agencies. Historian C. Stewart Gillmor treats Terman's program as a sustained effort to build disciplines and institutional capacity, not as the work of a lone inventor of Silicon Valley. Rebecca Lowen's history of Stanford during the Cold War likewise describes how defense patronage, administrative priorities, and academic entrepreneurship reshaped the university. Those studies show that federal spending was constitutive of Stanford's postwar growth even as university leaders cultivated an image of private enterprise. [23][24]

In 1951, Stanford established what became Stanford Research Park on university land. Hewlett-Packard and Varian Associates were among the firms associated with the university's developing electronics community, and Varian became the park's first tenant. Research parks, faculty consulting, student mobility, military procurement, and venture finance together helped make the peninsula a center of electronics and computing. Leslie and Kargon's study of Terman's regional model argues that Stanford administrators deliberately promoted a university-industry complex, but it also cautions against treating that model as automatically transferable to other regions. Silicon Valley's development depended on a particular combination of public investment, local firms, labor markets, and institutional decisions. [17][25]

Cold War funding also created institutional tensions. Lowen documents how administrators balanced obligations to government sponsors, faculty autonomy, classified or security-sensitive work, and the desire to expand the university's national standing. The effects differed across disciplines: engineering and physical sciences obtained especially large sponsored programs, while the university also invested in humanities, social sciences, and professional schools. The resulting research university was neither simply a government laboratory nor simply a private marketplace. It combined public grants, private gifts, tuition, endowment support, clinical activity, and contracts under different rules. [23]

The Stanford Research Institute was founded in 1946 as a university-affiliated research organization. It separated from Stanford in 1970 and is now SRI International, an independent nonprofit research institute. The distinction is important because popular histories sometimes attribute every SRI project to Stanford University. University faculty and alumni often collaborated with SRI researchers, and the shared name reflected the original relationship, but projects undertaken at SRI were not necessarily campus projects. SRI's own institutional history identifies both its 1946 foundation and its independence after 1970. [26]

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center was established in 1962. Now called SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, it is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory operated by Stanford. Its research spans particle physics, astrophysics, materials and chemical science, biology, energy science, and accelerator technology. Because SLAC is a federal laboratory, Stanford reports some research totals both including and distinguishing it. This accounting boundary explains why figures drawn from Stanford's university-only statements may differ from figures that include SLAC operations. [17][45]

Academics and students

Stanford awards bachelor's degrees through programs based primarily in Humanities and Sciences, Engineering, and the sustainability school, with additional undergraduate participation across the university. Graduate students pursue research degrees and professional degrees in all seven schools. The university uses a quarter academic calendar. Program details vary by school and year, so an institutional overview should not present one department's requirements as a university-wide rule. [10][46]

The undergraduate population recorded in autumn 2025 was 7,289. Stanford's profile describes a highly residential student body and reports the six-year completion measure for the latest available entering cohort. It does not justify claims that every student receives the same academic experience or that admissions outcomes alone establish educational quality. Graduate enrollment was 10,025 in the same term, distributed across master's, doctoral, and professional programs. [11][12]

Stanford says undergraduate admission is need-blind for United States citizens, permanent residents, undocumented students, and applicants classified as Eligible Noncitizens under its policy. For other international applicants, requesting financial aid is a factor in the admission evaluation. The university states that it meets demonstrated need for admitted undergraduates and does not expect students to borrow to meet that calculated need. For families with typical assets, Stanford's published 2025-2026 thresholds provide no tuition charge below $150,000 in annual family income and no charge for tuition, housing, or food below $100,000. These are aid-policy thresholds, not promises of identical awards, because Stanford calculates need from each family's circumstances. [13][14][47]

Stanford reported 2,402 members of the professoriate in autumn 2025, including tenure-line, medical-center-line, and other eligible faculty categories defined by the university. The same source listed 745 endowed professorships. Those counts exclude many lecturers, instructors, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars, and staff who also teach or conduct research. A faculty census therefore should be labeled by the university's category rather than converted into a broader headcount without explanation. [6][7]

Research and teaching cross school boundaries through departments, degree programs, and independent institutes. Institutional authority is distributed among the Board of Trustees, president, provost, Academic Council, Faculty Senate, schools, and other units. Stanford's scale should not be inferred from a single ranking or citation count. Enrollment, program, faculty, research, and financial measures answer different questions and are reported on different schedules. [8]

Research enterprise

For the fiscal year ending August 31, 2025, Stanford reported more than 7,500 sponsored-project awards and $2.3 billion in sponsored-research support, including SLAC. The federal government sponsored more than 70 percent of those awards. These figures describe awarded or recognized institutional research activity during a specified fiscal year; they are not equivalent to annual unrestricted revenue, and they do not measure the quality or social value of individual projects. The university also identified 15 independent laboratories, centers, and institutes reporting to the vice provost and dean of research. [5]

The independent units span fields that cannot be reduced to one technical theme. Examples include the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and Stanford Bio-X. Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve encompasses 1,193 acres used for research and education. Hopkins Marine Station, established in Pacific Grove in 1892, supports marine science away from the main campus. SLAC provides large-scale facilities and scientific programs under its federal operating agreement. [5][45]

Stanford researchers also work through schools, departments, hospitals, and affiliated institutes. Medical research can involve Stanford University, Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, or combinations of those entities. These relationships have distinct reporting and accounting boundaries; Stanford's audited report consolidates some entities while its institutional facts distinguish others. [3][5]

The university's official research totals are self-reported administrative measures. They are useful for describing scale when paired with a date and scope, but they should not be used to claim that Stanford is the largest or most productive research institution. Comparisons among universities require consistent treatment of medical systems, national laboratories, subawards, capital spending, and multi-institution grants. This article therefore reports Stanford's own bounded figures without converting them into a rank. [5]

Computing and artificial intelligence

Stanford's role in AI began after the field had already acquired its name. In an August 31, 1955 proposal for a summer research project at Dartmouth, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon used the phrase "artificial intelligence." McCarthy was then a Dartmouth faculty member. He joined Stanford in 1962. His Stanford memorial biography credits him with developing the LISP programming language, advancing time-sharing and formal reasoning, and shaping the university's computing program. The chronology matters: McCarthy coined the term before joining Stanford, so the coinage is part of his biography rather than an institutional invention by Stanford. [33][34]

McCarthy and Lester Earnest founded the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, or SAIL, in 1963. The laboratory later occupied a building in the foothills before returning to the main campus. SAIL brought together work in symbolic reasoning, theorem proving, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, interactive computing, and computer music. Its official history also records work on time-sharing, display systems, laser printing, and computer-controlled vehicles. The breadth of this program does not mean that every associated invention was completed solely at SAIL; many projects involved other university units, government sponsors, or outside collaborators. SAIL's early work emphasized symbolic reasoning and interactive computing, while later Stanford projects described in this article include probabilistic robotics, large labeled datasets, and foundation-model evaluation. These strands overlap and should not be treated as one uninterrupted laboratory program. [32][35][37][38][39][40]

One early Stanford research program was DENDRAL, developed by Robert Lindsay, Bruce Buchanan, Edward Feigenbaum, Joshua Lederberg, and collaborators. DENDRAL applied encoded chemical knowledge and heuristic search to infer molecular structures from mass-spectrometry data. A retrospective paper by four project leaders described it as a case study of the first expert system for scientific hypothesis formation. That historically specific description concerns a knowledge-based scientific program, not modern generative AI. DENDRAL's significance lies in its explicit representation of expert knowledge and the collaboration between computer scientists and chemists. [35]

Robotics history requires a similar institutional boundary. Shakey, built from 1966 to 1972, was an SRI project rather than a SAIL project. SRI describes it as a mobile robot that integrated perception, planning, and action. Because SRI was still formally associated with Stanford during part of the project, older accounts sometimes call Shakey a Stanford robot, but SRI is the accurate project-level attribution. The Stanford Cart, by contrast, was developed through Stanford work involving McCarthy, Earnest, Rodney Schmidt, Hans Moravec, and others. In 1979, the cart traversed a chair-filled room using a vision system, taking about five hours for the roughly 20-meter route. [27][36]

Stanford researchers later pursued road-going autonomous vehicles. Stanley, developed by a team led by Sebastian Thrun, won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge by completing the desert course in 6 hours, 53 minutes, and 58 seconds. The team's peer-reviewed technical report describes a system combining sensors, probabilistic estimation, planning, control, and machine learning. The result was one milestone in a broader field involving universities, government programs, automakers, and technology companies, rather than the beginning of autonomous driving as a whole. [37]

ImageNet was introduced by Jia Deng, Wei Dong, Richard Socher, Li-Jia Li, Kai Li, and Fei-Fei Li at the 2009 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. The paper described a large image database organized according to the WordNet hierarchy and intended to support training and evaluation in object-recognition research. [38]

Stanford also contributed to internet search through research by Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page. Their 1998 paper, written while both were Stanford graduate students, described a prototype large-scale search engine named Google and explained PageRank as one component of its ranking architecture. The paper documents a Stanford research project; it does not make every later activity of Google a university activity. [30]

In 2021, a Stanford-led group published "On the Opportunities and Risks of Foundation Models." The report proposed foundation models as a term for models trained on broad data at scale and adapted to many downstream tasks, and it organized research questions about capabilities, applications, harms, evaluation, law, economics, and social effects. It did not claim that Stanford invented the underlying class of models. The Center for Research on Foundation Models subsequently developed projects including HELM, a framework for evaluating language models across scenarios, metrics, and conditions. The 2023 HELM paper emphasized transparent, reproducible, multi-metric evaluation rather than a single universal score. [39][40]

Stanford established the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, commonly called HAI, in 2019. HAI supports research, education, policy work, and public programs across the university. Its "human-centered" framing is an institutional mission, not evidence that every Stanford AI system satisfies a particular ethical standard. The institute publishes the annual AI Index and convenes faculty from technical and nontechnical fields. [41][44]

In February 2025, Stanford announced that SAIL would become a center within HAI and that Carlos Guestrin would succeed Christopher Manning as SAIL director. The announcement specified that SAIL would retain responsibility for its research and educational goals while gaining administrative and programmatic support from HAI. It is therefore more accurate to describe SAIL as joining HAI than to say that HAI dissolved the laboratory or absorbed all of its work. [42]

Stanford announced on May 4, 2026 that HAI and the Stanford Data Science initiative would combine under the HAI name. James Landay continued as Denning Director of the combined institute. Fei-Fei Li became the university-wide Special Advisor on AI to President Jonathan Levin, joined John Hennessy as co-chair of HAI's advisory council, and retained her titles as founding director and senior fellow. The reorganization changed administration; it did not make every AI or data-science researcher at Stanford a member of one department. [43]

The 2026 AI Index Report was the current edition available at the research cutoff for this article. Its chapters cover research and development, technical performance, responsible AI, the economy, science, medicine, education, policy and governance, and public opinion. The report aggregates data from many external sources and should be cited for the measures it actually defines, not described through unsupported superlatives such as "the most cited" or treated as an independent audit of Stanford. Technology transfer and regional relationships

Stanford established the Office of Technology Licensing in 1970 to manage university intellectual-property assets. The office receives invention disclosures, evaluates their commercial possibilities, and, when possible, licenses them to industry. Its work covers patentable inventions, copyright including software and other content, tangible research property, and outgoing material-transfer agreements. [28]

Technology transfer begins with a disclosure, but disclosure does not guarantee a patent, a license, or a company. The licensing office reviews inventions with inventors, develops a licensing strategy, evaluates technical and market risks, and decides whether to pursue patent protection. Its process is not a guarantee that a disclosure will lead to startup formation. [28]

For the fiscal year ending August 31, 2025, Stanford reported more than $88 million in licensing revenue, 541 new invention disclosures, 117 licenses or options, and 28 startups that licensed Stanford intellectual property. These figures are administrative outputs for one year, not a count of all companies founded by alumni and not a measure of net social benefit. [29]

The Cohen-Boyer recombinant DNA patents illustrate the reach and the complexity of university licensing. Stanley Cohen's Stanford profile states that Stanford and the University of California patented research by Cohen and Herbert Boyer and that their seminal patent had 461 licensees before it expired in 1997. [31]

Stanford Research Park, the Office of Technology Licensing, faculty consulting, graduate mobility, and venture investment are separate mechanisms that are sometimes compressed into a single "Stanford created Silicon Valley" story. Historical scholarship instead identifies interacting university, government, corporate, and regional systems. The research park supplied long-term ground leases and proximity to campus; federal agencies funded research and bought technology; firms trained workers and developed products; and employees circulated among organizations. Stanford was an influential participant in this network, but not its sole cause. [23][24][25]

Campus and cultural institutions

Stanford's 8,353 acres extend across seven governmental jurisdictions. The university reported 630 buildings totaling 17.9 million square feet in 2025-2026. Stanford's description of its land includes a biological preserve, a center for automotive research, and an educational farm. The current acreage is larger than the 8,180-acre stock farm named in the founding history, and the two numbers refer to different dates. [4]

The university also operates a 35-acre campus in Redwood City, which opened in 2019 and houses more than 1,500 staff members. Stanford Research Park occupies about 700 acres and hosts approximately 150 independent companies. These sites are not interchangeable with the academic core: Redwood City is principally an administrative workplace, and companies in the research park are not university units. Stanford additionally manages natural lands and field stations used for research, including Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and Hopkins Marine Station. [4][5]

On a page updated March 17, 2026, Stanford Libraries reported more than 15 million items, more than 11 million physical volumes, more than 3 million ebooks, more than 65,000 serial licenses, 20 campus libraries, and approximately 50 subject specialists. The page presents the overall total and categories under the library's own definitions, so the figures should be treated as dated institutional measures rather than a complete inventory taxonomy. Public cultural institutions include the Cantor Arts Center, whose collection contains more than 42,000 works, and the Anderson Collection at Stanford University, which opened in 2014 to present 20th-century American art. The campus also includes performing-arts venues and outdoor sculpture. [16]

Governance and finances

Stanford's Board of Trustees holds ultimate fiduciary responsibility for university property, finances, major policies, and the appointment of the president. The president leads the institution, and the provost serves as chief academic and budget officer. The Academic Council consists of eligible faculty, and its Faculty Senate exercises legislative functions delegated to the faculty, including academic policy and degree authorization. [8]

This allocation of authority produces several distinct kinds of institutional speech. A Board resolution, a presidential policy, a Faculty Senate action, a school announcement, and an individual faculty publication do not carry the same status. Research findings by a Stanford author are not automatically university policy, and an administrative announcement is not peer-reviewed evidence for a scientific conclusion. Conversely, the university's own records are the appropriate primary sources for current officeholders, budgets, enrollment counts, and organizational changes. Keeping these source roles separate is particularly important for a university whose researchers frequently comment on public policy and emerging technology. [8][9]

Jonathan Levin became Stanford's 13th president in August 2024, and Jenny Martinez serves as provost. Leadership titles are time-sensitive and should be checked against the university's current governance page rather than inferred from older articles. [9]

Stanford adopted a $10.3 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2025-2026 and a separate $0.4 billion capital budget. The operating figure excludes the budgets of Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. Stanford's endowment was $40.8 billion as of August 31, 2025, and its audited financial statements report the more exact value as $40,786,546,000. The endowment is a pool of many funds rather than a checking account: Stanford stated that roughly 75 percent of its payout was restricted to specified purposes and that the annual distribution to operations was $1.9 billion in fiscal 2025. Budget, endowment, and research figures use different accounting periods and scopes. The operating budget is a plan for a fiscal year, the endowment is a balance at a date, and sponsored-research support is a flow measured under research-accounting rules. Including hospital systems or SLAC can materially change a total. Clear scope prevents misleading comparisons and avoids treating restricted endowment principal as immediately available operating cash. [2][3][5]

Institutional legacies and scope

Stanford's institutional history includes contributions to education and research as well as unequal labor relations, eugenics advocacy by an early president, Native land history, military research, and debates over university-industry ties. The university's Muwekma Ohlone relationship, Chinese railroad labor project, and name-review process are documented efforts to address parts of that record. They do not close the underlying historical or political questions. An accurate account keeps these histories in the main narrative instead of treating them as unrelated footnotes. [18][19][21][22]

Attribution also requires care. SRI became independent in 1970, SLAC is federally owned and Stanford-operated, the hospitals have separate financial statements, and firms in Stanford Research Park are independent tenants. Alumni companies are not university subsidiaries merely because founders studied or worked at Stanford. Conversely, contractual and financial separation does not eliminate the influence of university training, sponsored research, licensing, or personal networks. The most defensible account specifies the relationship relevant to each claim. [4][26][28][45]

Stanford's current scale and leadership will change. This article uses official statistics labeled for autumn 2025, fiscal year 2025 or 2025-2026, and a research cutoff of July 28, 2026. Historical claims rely on institutional archives and academic histories, while technical claims rely on original papers where available. The dates and scopes are part of the facts: removing them would turn bounded measurements into unsupported permanent descriptions.
