Claude Max

What is Claude Max?

The launch arrived during a period of growing demand for premium individual subscriptions across the AI industry. TechCrunch described Max as Anthropic's answer to OpenAI's $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro tier, which had launched a few months earlier, and noted that frontier model developers were searching for ways to raise revenue from power users. ^[1] CNBC similarly characterized the move as Anthropic stepping up its competition with OpenAI. ^[2] Reporting at the time observed that, unlike ChatGPT Pro, Anthropic's Max plan did not offer an unlimited usage option; the Max tiers instead provided defined multiples of Pro's limits. ^[1]

The product launched alongside heightened interest in Anthropic's reasoning model Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which the company said had generated substantial demand for its products. ^[1] Scott White, a product lead at Anthropic, told TechCrunch that the company was not ruling out even pricier subscriptions in the future, saying, "We'll always keep a number of exploratory options available to us." ^[1]

How much does Claude Max cost?

Max is offered in two monthly tiers, each defined by how much usage it provides relative to the Pro plan. Both are billed at a higher rate than Pro, which costs $20 per month. ^[1][4] The figures below reflect the structure announced at launch and described in Anthropic's help documentation.

Anthropic's help center states that the lower Max tier provides roughly five times more usage per session than Pro, and the higher tier roughly twenty times more. ^[4] At launch, TechCrunch reported the same structure: "a $100-per-month Max tier with 5x higher rate limits than Claude Pro and a $200-per-month Max option with 20x higher rate limits." ^[1] The company notes that prices and plans are subject to change at its discretion, and that usage may be limited in additional ways, including weekly and monthly caps and limits on specific models or features. ^[4] Multiple outlets confirmed the two prices and multipliers at launch. ^[1][2]

What features does Claude Max include?

The headline benefit of Max is a larger usage allowance, which translates into longer conversations, the ability to attach more or larger documents, and more total interactions before hitting a limit. ^[3][4] Beyond raw capacity, Max subscribers receive priority access to Anthropic's newest models and features, which often reach Max before rolling out more broadly. ^[1][4] Anthropic lists this as a core benefit of the plan: "Priority access: Be among the first to experience new models, features, and products." ^[4]

The two tiers differ only in scale, not in the underlying feature set: both the $100 and $200 plans include the same priority access and the same model availability, with the higher tier simply granting more usage. ^[4] Anthropic combined Claude's web, desktop, and mobile apps and Claude Code into a single subscription under Max, so usage across those surfaces draws from one shared allowance. ^[4][5]

Usage limits on the plan have changed since launch. In late July 2025, Anthropic said it would add two new weekly rate limits for both Pro and Max, effective August 28, 2025, on top of the existing limits that reset every five hours. ^[6] One weekly limit applies to overall usage and the other is specific to the most capable model, Claude Opus 4. ^[6] The company estimated the change would affect fewer than 5 percent of subscribers and said most users would not notice a difference, attributing the move to continuous around-the-clock use of Claude Code and to account sharing and reselling. ^[6] For the weekly windows, Anthropic estimated that the $100 Max tier would allow roughly 140 to 280 hours of Sonnet and 15 to 35 hours of Opus, while the $200 tier would allow roughly 240 to 480 hours of Sonnet and 24 to 40 hours of Opus, with the figures depending on the length and complexity of each task. ^[6] Subscribers who exhaust their allowance can buy additional usage at standard API rates. ^[4][6]

How does Claude Max work with Claude Code?

Max is closely tied to Claude Code, Anthropic's tool for running Claude in a terminal for software development. Both Pro and Max include access to Claude Code under one subscription, and usage in Claude Code counts against the same limits as the apps rather than being metered separately. ^[5] Because Claude Code can consume a large amount of usage during sustained coding sessions, the additional headroom of the Max tiers is a central reason developers choose the plan over Pro. ^[5][6] The July 2025 rate-limit announcement was driven in large part by the demand Claude Code placed on Anthropic's systems. ^[6]

Coverage of the launch focused on price and competitive positioning. TechCrunch and CNBC both treated the $200 upper tier as a direct counterpart to ChatGPT Pro and as evidence that AI companies were leaning into premium subscriptions for heavy users. ^[1][2] Commentators noted that the absence of an unlimited option distinguished Max from OpenAI's top tier. ^[1]

Later reception centered on usage limits rather than the launch itself. After the weekly caps took effect in 2025, some heavy users, particularly those running Claude Code for long stretches, reported reaching their limits faster than expected and questioned how the caps were measured. ^[6] Anthropic maintained that the limits targeted a small minority of extreme users and account abuse rather than typical subscribers. ^[6]
