Android XR is Google's operating system for extended reality headsets and glasses, announced on 2024-12-12 in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm and built around Gemini as a system-level assistant rather than an installed app.[1] Three device families run it: the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, which went on sale on 2025-10-21 at $1,799.99;[7][8] XREAL's Aura wired glasses, taking refundable reservations for a fall 2026 launch;[16][17] and the unnamed "intelligent eyewear" that Samsung and Google revealed at Galaxy Unpacked in London on 2026-07-22.[19] Google builds none of that hardware. Its contribution is the platform, the developer tooling and the assistant, which inverts the arrangement Meta uses for its own headsets and glasses.

The distinction between announced and shipping matters more here than for most platforms. As of 2026-08-01 the Galaxy XR headset is the only Android XR device a consumer can actually buy, and it started in the United States and Korea before reaching the United Kingdom on 2026-07-08.[7][18] The glasses exist as designs on a stage: no name, no price, and no date beyond "this fall".[14][19][22]

Announcement and positioning

Google introduced Android XR on 2024-12-12 in a post by Shahram Izadi, its VP and general manager for XR, describing it as "a new operating system built for this next generation of computing" and "created in collaboration with Samsung", combining "years of investment in AI, AR and VR".[1] Qualcomm was named as the third partner. The framing was explicitly a platform play: "Android XR is designed to be an open, unified platform for XR headsets and glasses. For users, this means more choice of devices and access to apps they already know and love."[1] It is one operating system meant to span virtual reality headsets and augmented reality eyewear rather than a separate product for each.

The breadth was there from the start. Google named Sony, Lynx and XREAL as Qualcomm partners for whom it was "opening a path" to build Android XR devices, and said it would keep collaborating with Magic Leap on XR technology and future products.[1] Samsung's headset, then codenamed Project Moohan, was announced as the first device. Existing Android apps from Google Play were promised to run on XR devices out of the box.[1] Google also confirmed the same day that it would begin real-world testing of prototype glasses running Android XR with a small group of users, tying the platform to Google DeepMind's Project Astra research prototype, announced the previous day.[1]

Samsung has since put the contrast with Meta in commercial terms. Speaking to The Korea Times after Unpacked in July 2026, the company described its glasses as being defined by the fact that they are "made by a smartphone specialist", and as "an extension of the experience centered on the smartphone, rather than being a post-smartphone device", against Meta's approach of building a standalone accessory.[22]

Form factors and what Google calls them

Google now recognises four Android XR device classes, and it renamed two of them mid-flight. At the Android Show XR Edition on 2025-12-08 the company distinguished "AI glasses", screen-free devices using speakers, microphones and cameras, from "display AI glasses", which add an in-lens display.[10] With Developer Preview 4 on 2026-05-19 those became "audio glasses" and "display glasses", with the change appearing in Google's documentation from that day.[15] The other two classes are XR headsets and wired XR glasses, the tethered optical see-through category that XREAL Aura defines.[15]

The developer story

The SDK shipped as a developer preview on the same day as the platform announcement. Developer Preview 1 covered the Jetpack XR SDK (Jetpack Compose for XR, Material Design for XR, Jetpack SceneCore, and ARCore for Jetpack XR), the Android XR Extensions for Unity 6, WebXR support in Chrome, OpenXR 1.1 conformance, and an Android XR Emulator inside the Android Studio Meerkat preview.[2] Google extended OpenXR with vendor extensions for an AI-powered hand mesh, depth textures for occlusion, light estimation and new trackables for real-world objects, and adopted glTF 2.0 and OpenEXR as asset formats.[2]

Porting an existing Android app is deliberately close to a no-op. Most Play Store apps are made available on Android XR without additional development work, and a Compose app can opt in to automatically spatialize its Material Design components and adaptive layouts.[2] Going beyond a floating flat panel means spatial panels, 3D content and spatial audio through SceneCore, or perception features through ARCore for Jetpack XR. Glasses work differently again. The Jetpack Projected library extends an existing phone app into the wearer's field of view, and Jetpack Compose Glimmer is a separate design language and UI toolkit built for display glasses, using Google Sans Flex for legibility on optical see-through panels.[15]

Milestone	Date	What it added
Developer Preview 1	2024-12-12	Jetpack XR SDK, Unity 6 extensions, WebXR, OpenXR 1.1, XR emulator [2]
Developer Preview 2	2025-05-20	Easier APIs and new immersive features, released at Google I/O 2025 [4]
Developer Preview 3	2025-12-08	Opened development for AI glasses; new immersive APIs for headsets and wired glasses [10]
Developer Preview 4	2026-05-19	Jetpack Projected, Compose Glimmer components, custom meshes, native glTF in Compose for XR, Geospatial API preview [15]
Core libraries to beta	2026-07-15	androidx.xr.runtime, scenecore and arcore reach 1.0.0-beta01 [24]

Developer Preview 4 also brought a Kotlin-first cleanup, removing the legacy Guava and RxJava3 packages, and an early preview of the ARCore Geospatial API for wired XR glasses, which anchors content to real-world locations in more than 87 countries by combining Google's Visual Positioning System with the audio and reasoning of the Gemini Live API.[15] Engine support widened at the same time: official Unreal Engine and Godot support alongside Unity, plus a Windows desktop tool called the Android XR Engine Hub for testing inside an engine viewport.[15][25] A Developer Catalyst Program hands out pre-release hardware, including an audio and display glasses prototype and XREAL Aura developer kits.[15][16]

As of 2026-08-01 the SDK is still at Developer Preview 4. The core Jetpack XR libraries moved to beta on 2026-07-15 at version 1.0.0-beta01, and Compose Glimmer was still at 1.0.0-alpha16 on 2026-07-29.[24] No component has reached a stable 1.0.

Gemini as the system assistant

Samsung's own launch material is the clearest statement of the design: Android XR "has Gemini embedded right from the start", and "with Gemini integrated at the system level, Galaxy XR doesn't feel like a tool following users' commands but a new type of AI companion".[7] In practice that means the assistant sees the passthrough or camera feed, hears what the wearer hears, and can act across apps rather than inside one.

On glasses, Google described the intended behaviour at I/O 2026 on 2026-05-19. Gemini is summoned by saying "Hey Google" or tapping the side of the frame. It answers questions about whatever is in view, gives turn-by-turn directions based on where the wearer is standing and facing, manages calls and texts and summarizes missed messages, captures photos and video with Nano Banana editing available by voice, and performs real-time translation with audio matched to the tone and pitch of the speaker's voice.[14] Gemini Intelligence handles multi-step tasks in the background, Google's example being placing a coffee order while the phone stays in the wearer's pocket, with the user confirming the final order.[14] Notably, Google said the audio glasses will pair with both Android and iOS phones.[14]

Gemini Live-style continuous multimodal conversation is the interaction model rather than a wake word attached to a camera, and the same assistant runs on the headset, the glasses, the phone and the watch. The obvious point of comparison is Meta AI on Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The structural difference sits on Google's side of the ledger: Gemini is the system assistant on devices Google neither designs, manufactures nor sells.

Samsung Galaxy XR

Galaxy XR launched on 2025-10-21 in the United States and 2025-10-22 in Korea at $1,799.99, with optional controllers and a travel case at $249.99 each.[7][8] It runs a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 with 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage, dual micro-OLED displays at 3,552 by 3,840, a field of view Samsung gives as 109 degrees horizontal and 100 degrees vertical, and a 545 g headset weight with the forehead cushion attached plus a separate 302 g battery pack.[7] Samsung's own battery figures are up to two hours of general use and up to 2.5 hours of video.[7]

After a short hands-on at the launch event, UploadVR called the common characterisation of it as "an Android-ecosystem Apple Vision Pro for half the price" broadly correct as a product proposition but misleading about the form factor: Galaxy XR uses an open-periphery forehead pad and a non-detachable rigid strap rather than a face gasket.[9] Google has updated the platform steadily since: PC Connect and Likeness avatars in beta, plus travel mode, on 2025-12-08,[10] then experimental auto-spatialization of 2D apps, wall pinning, real-hand visibility and session resume on 2026-04-07, at which point Google said more than 100 apps had been built specifically for XR, more than double the number at launch.[12]

Commercially it has been modest. When Samsung opened UK pre-orders on 2026-06-17 at £1,699 for a 2026-07-08 ship date, 9to5Google observed flatly that the headset "hasn't been a resounding success".[18] Samsung has published no unit figures.

XREAL Aura

Google teased XREAL's device as Project Aura at I/O 2025, naming it the second Android XR device and describing it as "a portable and tethered device that gives users access to their favorite Android apps".[6] XREAL unveiled the production name and opened reservations on 2026-06-16 at Augmented World Expo in Long Beach.[16]

Aura splits computing between the frames and a tethered puck. The puck runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite, and Aura is the first device to use it; the frames carry XREAL's own X1S spatial coprocessor for low-latency display and sensor work.[16][17] XREAL gives a 70 degree field of view and frames weighing "less than 95g", with world-facing sensors for hand tracking and 6DoF.[16] UploadVR noted that XREAL had previously told outlets the puck would use the XR2+ Gen 2, so the plan either changed or was misstated.[17]

Aura is an optical see-through device, not an everyday pair of glasses. Road to VR noted at the 2025 tease that XREAL has a track record of pairing micro-OLED panels with birdbath optics, which are cheaper and bulkier than the waveguide approach used in devices such as Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap One.[6] Nothing has shipped: XREAL has not announced a price beyond saying it "will not exceed $1500", and its reservation scheme takes a refundable $299 Founder Priority Pass or a $99 launch credit rather than a pre-order.[17]

Samsung and Google intelligent eyewear

At Galaxy Unpacked in London on 2026-07-22, Samsung introduced eyewear developed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker and built on Android XR with Gemini.[19] Samsung's release describes two designs, a slim black Gentle Monster frame and a brown Warby Parker style with an upswept brow line, adding to the two Google had previewed at I/O 2026 in May; 9to5Google, which went hands-on at the event, counted four styles, two from each brand.[14][19][21] Qualcomm confirmed the silicon on the same day: Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1.[20]

Samsung's vendor-reported battery figure is up to nine hours on a charge with up to seven additional full charges from the case.[19] There is a built-in camera. There is no display: the press release does not mention one, which matches Google's stated sequence of audio glasses first and display glasses later.[14][19] Gesture control is not standalone either, since Samsung's own footnote says "Gesture interactions are only provided through Watch9".[19] Beyond the Gemini features Google had already described, Samsung claims the glasses can capture a whiteboard or meeting into Samsung Notes and share the wearer's view live during a call.[19] A camera privacy light works much as it does on Meta's glasses, sitting opposite the camera on both the outer frame and the inner rim, and Samsung says recording is disabled when the light is covered or the glasses are not being worn.[21][22]

The product has no official name. Samsung calls it "intelligent eyewear" throughout its own materials, and the "Galaxy Glasses" label that appears in press coverage and leaks is shorthand, not a Samsung name.[19][21] There is no price, though Samsung has said it is aiming for "a reasonable level" within "the premium range", and no date beyond later in 2026.[22]

The eyewear partnerships

The eyewear brands entered through Google rather than Samsung, and they were announced at Google I/O on 2025-05-20, a full year before Samsung showed hardware. Google said it was "partnering with innovative eyewear brands, starting with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker", and that "in the future, we look forward to working with more partners, like Kering Eyewear".[3] Kering is a stated future partner, not a peer of the first two. The same post described Google and Samsung "creating a software and reference hardware platform that will enable the ecosystem to make great glasses".[3]

The Warby Parker terms are on the public record because Warby Parker is listed. Its 8-K exhibit of 2025-05-20 is headlined "Google Commits Up to $150M, Including an Equity Investment in Warby Parker" and calls the deal the first eyewear partnership for Android XR. The structure is two halves: Google "has committed up to $75 million for Warby Parker's product development and commercialization costs", and separately "has committed to investing up to $75 million in Warby Parker, at Warby Parker's option and subject to reaching certain collaboration milestones".[5] Both are ceilings, not payments. Warby Parker's FY2025 annual report accounts for the arrangement under ASC 808 as a collaborative arrangement rather than as revenue, states that Google is not a customer under ASC 606, and discloses that reimbursable Google costs reduced selling, general and administrative expenses by $3.3 million during 2025.[11] That is what had actually landed in the accounts through 2025-12-31, against a headline of $150 million.

Kering surfaced separately. On 2026-04-27 the French luxury group said it was working with Google on Gucci-branded smart glasses, with chief executive Luca de Meo telling Reuters they would arrive "probably next year, 2027".[13] Road to VR noted that adding a luxury brand could let Android XR cover a wider price range in the AI glasses market than either Meta or Apple.[13]

The Google Glass inheritance

Android XR is Google's second attempt at a head-worn platform, and the company is careful to note the continuity: at I/O 2025 it said "for over a decade, we've been working on the concept of smart glasses".[3] The first attempt ended quietly. Google stopped selling Glass Enterprise Edition on 2023-03-15 and ended support on 2023-09-15, with no further software updates planned and system images promised only until at least 2024-04-01.[23] Google Glass had been Google hardware, designed, built and sold by Google under its own brand.

The structural change is that Google is not selling glasses this time. It is licensing an operating system, supplying the assistant, funding an eyewear brand's development costs, and letting Samsung, XREAL, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster carry the hardware, the retail and the inventory risk. Whether that produces a durable AI glasses business rather than a second retreat is not answerable from anything published as of 2026-08-01. The platform has been public since December 2024 and has one device in stores, a $1,799.99 headset.
