Claude Team Plan for Scientists is a limited promotional version of Claude's Team subscription for eligible academic and nonprofit research groups. Launch and purpose
Anthropic introduced the plan as part of a broader expansion of its support for scientific users. Its August 27 announcement described 10,000 seats for scientists around the world and said it intended to expand beyond that initial allocation in later months.[1] A simultaneous post from the Claude account referred to 10,000 scientists "across every field" and named mathematics, chemistry, and physics as examples.[2] The detailed eligibility language is narrower: applicants must work in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related field at an accredited university or nonprofit research institute.[3][4]
The figure of 10,000 describes the announced maximum for the initial promotion. Anthropic had not published the number of approved groups, activated seats, active users, countries represented, or remaining seats as of September 2, 2026. It also had not released an institution-by-institution participant list. Logos and testimonials on the marketing page do not establish that the named institutions joined this particular subscription program.[3]
The offer followed an earlier discounted Team plan for active research labs that Anthropic promoted alongside Claude Science in June 2026.[8] Existing subscribers to that earlier research-lab offer were scheduled to move automatically to the new prices for charges after August 27. Charges already paid, including prepaid annual seats, are not refunded or prorated under the transition, while seats added after August 27 receive the new pricing.[4]

The regular-price figures come from Claude's public Team pricing on September 2, 2026.[5] The scientist-program page labels its comparison prices as $20 for Standard and $100 for Premium, which correspond to the annual-billing rates on the general Team page.[3][5]
The launch post called the Premium offer an "80% discount."[2] That percentage does not reconcile with the detailed prices published at the same time: $15 is 85% below $100 and 88% below $125. Because the official pages give exact dollar amounts but inconsistent shorthand for the percentage reduction, the dollar prices and billing basis are the more precise description of the offer.

The offer excludes for-profit companies, contract research organizations, and industry research and development teams. Application and group administration
The PI or lab leader begins from the program page and completes a verification flow. The application asks the applicant to confirm institutional affiliation and briefly describe the research. Anthropic says most applications are reviewed within five to seven business days; its Help Center rounds this to within seven business days. Approved applicants receive an email, create or configure the Team workspace, and invite group members.[3][4]
Each group can have from 1 to 25 seats under the self-service promotion. Groups that need more than 25 seats are directed to contact Anthropic.[3][4] A researcher whose university already has a Claude Enterprise agreement is advised to check with the institution's account administrator first. Anthropic describes the promotion as intended for small research groups without an institution-wide agreement.[4]
An administrator of an existing Team workspace must still complete the verification flow. Once approved, the administrator can apply the scientist-program pricing to the existing plan from the Program verifications area of the account settings.[4]
Included products and administration
Every seat includes the ordinary Claude Team feature set. The program page specifically lists shared projects, file creation, central billing and administration, single sign-on, connectors to scientific databases, and access to Claude Science, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.[3][4] Standard and Premium are seat classes within the same workspace rather than different scientific products. Premium adds more usage capacity; it does not claim a different model, higher scientific accuracy, or privileged access to unpublished research.
Claude Science is a separate beta application included with eligible paid Claude plans. It integrates research tools and packages, runs analyses, and records the code and steps behind generated artifacts.[8] Nature described Claude Science in July 2026 as one of several emerging general-purpose AI tools for laboratories, but that comparison predates the scientist subscription promotion and does not evaluate the promotion itself.[9]
The Team plan does not remove model-level safety restrictions. At the August 27 launch, Anthropic said biology and chemistry researchers would remain limited to Opus-class models for professional biology and drug-development work, while Fable models continued to block those queries because of dual-use risk. Anthropic described a separate, government-coordinated path for vetted life-sciences professionals to use Mythos-class models and said that the first participants in that access effort had been enrolled.[1] Participation in the discounted Team plan therefore does not by itself confer Mythos access.
Relation to the AI for Science program
The Team Plan for Scientists and AI for Science address different kinds of access. The Team plan discounts named user seats for a research group. AI for Science, launched in May 2025, is an application-based program that provides API or usage credits to selected research projects.[1][7]
At the Team plan's launch, Anthropic said any researcher could apply to AI for Science for up to $50,000 in credits per project when a project needed more capacity than Standard or Premium seats provided.[1] This does not mean every Team-plan group receives $50,000, nor that every application is funded. Credit awards are reviewed separately on the proposed work's scientific contribution, potential impact, and the extent to which AI could accelerate it.[7]
The August announcement also broadened the stated scope of the credits program beyond its earlier emphasis on biology and life sciences.[1][7] This expansion did not change the Team plan's applicant rule: only a PI or equivalent at a qualifying academic or nonprofit institution can establish the discounted Team workspace.[3][4]
Duration, renewal, and inactivity
The marketing and Help Center pages describe the promotional price as lasting 12 months from sign-up.[3][4]
After the 12-month promotional period, seats renew at the then-current price for the plan. Anthropic says it will email workspace administrators before the price changes.[3][4] The offer has limited availability, final pricing is confirmed after verification, and prices and plans can change at the company's discretion.[3][5]
The Help Center says a group with no activity for 90 days may be returned to standard Team pricing so that discounted seats remain available to active researchers. Anthropic says it will email the workspace administrator before making that change.[3][4] The Help Center does not define how activity is measured.
Data handling
The scientist offer uses Claude Team's commercial data practices. Anthropic's Help Center says that, by default, it does not train its models on conversations, uploaded files, or other user data from Team and Enterprise plans. If a user or organization explicitly opts in or submits feedback, the associated conversations may be used to improve Anthropic's models or products.[4][5]
The no-training default is not the same as a promise that no data is processed or retained. The program page says administrators can configure data-retention policies, while actual handling also depends on the workspace settings and connected services used.[3][4]
Evidence and limitations
The program was six days old as of September 2, 2026. No peer-reviewed study, independent audit, or public administrative dataset had measured its uptake, geographic distribution, effect on research productivity, or scientific outcomes. The 10,000 figure is an offer limit, not evidence that 10,000 researchers received or used seats. Anthropic's statement that it intended to expand beyond the initial allocation was a future plan rather than a guaranteed capacity increase.[1]
Independent scientific discussion of AI research agents predates this subscription offer. A March 2026 Nature editorial argued that increasingly automated discovery raises unresolved questions for institutions, funders, and publishers, including responsibility for errors.[10] Those issues provide context for research use of Claude, but they do not validate the Team plan or establish that access to it improves scientific results.
