Unitree AS2-W is a compact wheeled-legged quadruped announced by Unitree Robotics on July 24, 2026. It combines an articulated four-legged body with a powered wheel at the end of each leg, allowing it to roll on regular surfaces and reposition its legs around steps, rocks, and changes in terrain. Unitree markets the platform for outdoor carrying, inspection, security, research, and embodied AI development.[1][2]

The robot was introduced through a short demonstration video rather than an independently observed launch event. The video shows fast travel, rough-terrain movement, jumps, and acrobatics, but Unitree had not released controlled test results or a third-party performance evaluation by July 25, 2026. The figures in this article are therefore identified as manufacturer claims unless another source is stated.

Name, release, and models

Unitree's launch post uses the uppercase name "AS2-W," while its English product page styles the family "As2-W." The specification table names two variants, As2-W X and As2-W EDU. This article follows the capitalization in the launch post and its requested article title, while retaining Unitree's table labels for the individual variants.[1][2]

The July announcement came five months after Unitree launched the non-wheeled AS2 on February 24, 2026.[4] AS2-W is presented in the consumer and education section of Unitree's site, despite the company's emphasis on industrial-style components and uses such as inspection and security. Unitree did not publish a list price or shipment date. Both variants were listed as contact-sales products at launch.[2]

The two variants have the same published dimensions, motors, battery, payload ratings, sensors, base processor, communications, and environmental rating. Their clearest listed differences concern included accessories and compute expansion.[2]

Unitree lists a 12-month warranty for both variants and directs buyers to a separate warranty manual for detailed terms.[2]

Mechanical design

AS2-W measures 721 x 493 x 521 mm while standing and 768 x 602 x 211 mm while prone. Unitree lists a mass of about 25 kg with the battery installed. The body uses aluminum alloy and engineering plastic, and the wheel diameter is given as 7 inches, or 178 mm.[2]

The same specification row also prints a 50 mm wheel radius, which is incompatible with its 178 mm diameter. Unitree does not explain the discrepancy, so the radius value is not used here.[2]

The specification table describes 16 joint motors with crossed-roller bearings, dual encoders, and local air cooling. It lists low-inertia inner-rotor permanent-magnet synchronous motors and a maximum joint torque of about 95 N m. By comparison, the AS2 has 12 joint motors. Launch coverage describes AS2-W as adding four actively driven wheels to the AS2 architecture, which accounts for the four-motor difference.[2][3][9]

Unitree gives joint travel as -45 to 45 degrees at the body joint, -115 to 200 degrees at the thigh, and -159 to -47 degrees at the shank. The published table does not separately state the wheel rotation range.[2]

The wheel and leg actuators are not interchangeable parts of the motion system. Wheel rotation supplies continuous travel, while the hip, thigh, and lower-leg joints change body height, place each wheel, manage contact, and step where rolling alone is insufficient. Unitree does not publish wheel-motor torque, steering geometry, suspension travel, tire pressure, or low-level wheel-control details.

Mobility and payload claims

Unitree lists a regular speed range of 0-3.7 m/s and a maximum of about 6 m/s in the detailed table. A summary card on the same page says the maximum is over 6 m/s. The more conservative table value is used here because no independent speed test was available.[2]

The 150 kg figure is a static standing-load claim, not a claim that the robot can move continuously with that mass. Unitree gives 16 kg as the continuous walking load. It also distinguishes 30 cm stair climbing from a maximum climb-height range of roughly 0.4-0.8 m; marketing text shortens the upper end of that range to an "80 cm obstacle."[2]

Unitree assigns AS2-W an IP54 enclosure rating and describes operation in rain, dust, and wet terrain. In the IP code, the first numeral covers solid-object ingress and the second covers water ingress; the second numeral 4 denotes protection against splashing water from any direction.[13] IP54 should not be read as an immersion or pressure-washing rating. Unitree's B2-W, for comparison, is listed at IP67.[6]

Battery and endurance

The single lithium battery is rated at 648 Wh and 15,000 mAh, with a listed supply range of 36-50.4 V. Unitree lists a 50.4 V, 7.4 A fast charger, but does not publish charging time, cycle life, pack mass, or hot-swap support. No charging dock is listed for either AS2-W variant.[2]

Endurance numbers vary within the product page. The detailed table says about three hours and 30 km unloaded, and more than two hours and about 25 km while carrying 16 kg. The summary card instead says more than three hours and more than 33 km unloaded, and more than two hours and more than 16 km loaded. Unitree says these data were obtained under laboratory conditions and may change with configuration and use.[2]

The distance and time figures describe different aspects of endurance and should not be converted into a constant average speed. Terrain, gait, rolling speed, payload, temperature, and time spent stationary can all change the relationship between them. No test route, surface, duty cycle, or battery cutoff threshold is disclosed.

Perception, compute, and communications

Both variants list an HD camera and an industrial 64-128-line ultra-wide-angle LiDAR. The product page does not identify the sensor models, camera resolution, fields of view, frame rates, calibration method, or whether the quoted LiDAR line count represents selectable configurations. An 8-core CPU is standard, but Unitree does not name the processor, memory, storage, or base-system accelerator.[2]

Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a microphone, speaker, and front light are standard. GPS and 4G are listed as disabled by default and enabled with user authorization. The physical expansion interfaces are one Gigabit Ethernet port, one SBUS connection, and a battery-voltage power output.[2]

Unitree lists its ISS 3.0 Intelligent Side-follow System on both variants and claims centimeter-level positioning with stable tracking. It does not give an accuracy distribution, range, update rate, failure conditions, or independent field results. The claim is best understood as a description of the company's follow feature, not a general localization guarantee.

The marketing section says AS2-W supports a 150 TOPS expansion module for on-device processing. This is not the specified performance of the unnamed base CPU. In the detailed table, the X model has no high-compute dock listed, while EDU can be configured with multiple modules and mentions Orin NX from the NVIDIA Jetson family as an example. Unitree does not identify which module supplies the 150 TOPS figure or say that it is included in the EDU base configuration.[2]

Software and development access

Unitree says both X and EDU support secondary development, its UniStore platform, and continuing over-the-air updates. The product page describes developer-facing SDKs and APIs that can host large AI models and support interaction or autonomous decision-making. It does not publish an API inventory, access level, wheel-control interface, safety limits, or a named model included with the robot.[2]

At announcement time, Unitree's public unitree_sdk2 repository contained AS2 sport-control examples, but no AS2-W-specific example directory was visible.[8] The product page directs readers to a Secondary Development Manual without linking a public AS2-W manual. General AS2 examples therefore do not establish which wheel commands, sensor streams, or low-level controls AS2-W buyers receive. Public launch material also does not document AS2-W support for the Robot Operating System.

One launch report says Unitree's video labels a pre-trained "RL Model 6.0."[9] The official specification page does not name that controller, explain what behaviors it covers, or link to a technical report. It is not evidence that AS2-W ships with a published reinforcement learning model or that the launch-video motions are reproducible through the public SDK.

Relationship to other Unitree quadrupeds

AS2-W is close in body length and battery capacity to the non-wheeled AS2, but it is wider, 7 kg heavier, and has four additional motors. The AS2 EDU table lists 18 kg, 12 motors, a 15 kg continuous load, an approximate 5 m/s maximum, and about 20 km of unloaded range. It uses the same nominal 648 Wh battery. AS2-W's larger distance claim and shorter time claim are consistent with faster rolling, but the separate laboratory conditions do not support a direct energy-efficiency calculation.[2][3]

Unitree had also developed wheeled variants in smaller and larger classes. Go2-W is an 18 kg consumer/education platform with 16 motors, 45 N m maximum joint torque, 2.5 m/s speed, and an 8 kg nominal payload. A2-W and B2-W are heavier industrial machines with larger payloads and different compute, interface, battery, and ingress-protection provisions.[5][6][7]

The table shows why AS2-W is not simply a replacement name for A2-W or B2-W. It targets a much lower mass class. Compared with Go2-W, it raises Unitree's listed torque, speed, payload, terrain, and sensing specifications while remaining far lighter than the industrial wheeled models.

Research context

Wheels mounted on articulated legs are an established robotics research direction. A 2019 ETH Zurich paper demonstrated whole-body control and planning on an ANYmal quadruped fitted with non-steerable wheels. The authors modeled the rolling constraints and combined driving with stepping, illustrating that adding wheels also adds planning and contact-control requirements.[11]

Researchers at the University of Bonn later demonstrated optimized driving, stepping, and jumping with directly driven, non-steerable wheels on modified quadrupeds. Their work addressed obstacles that cannot be handled by continuous rolling alone.[12] These studies explain the rationale for a robot such as AS2-W, but neither evaluates Unitree's product. Their results cannot verify AS2-W's controller, range, speed, obstacle height, or payload.

A June 2026 preprint from researchers at the University of California, Berkeley and Politecnico di Milano used a Unitree Go2-W to study active load-transfer control during autonomous racing. Their controller used the leg joints as active suspension while the wheels supplied differential drive. In their physical track tests, active roll control reduced mean load-transfer ratio by up to 44 percent, shortened the fastest lap by 8.7 percent, and raised peak lateral acceleration by 21.3 percent to 1.98 m/s^2.[14] The platform and controller were Go2-W-specific, so those results do not measure AS2-W.

Evidence limits and safety

Launch-day reports from IT之家 and Sina/Kuaikeji repeated Unitree's video and specification claims rather than presenting hands-on measurements.[9][10] Some coverage also introduced conflicting numbers. IT之家, for example, reported a 180 kg load, while Unitree's own page distinguishes a 150 kg static load from a 16 kg continuous moving load.[2][9]

As of July 25, 2026, no independent AS2-W benchmark, teardown, certification report, or field review was located. Unitree had not publicly specified the base CPU, memory, storage, exact perception sensors, wheel-motor ratings, charging time, battery service life, maintenance interval, tire replacement details, full API surface, autonomous-navigation benchmark, ISS 3.0 test method, or delivery schedule. A public price was also absent.

Unitree warns that the robot has powerful dynamics, tells users to keep a safe distance, and says some features shown on the product page remain under development and will be released gradually.[2] Those caveats matter when interpreting the launch video: a demonstrated maneuver is not necessarily an available autonomous behavior, an exposed SDK command, or a validated capability across surfaces and payloads.
