Amazon Prime Air
Amazon Prime Air is Amazon's drone package delivery service, announced by founder Jeff Bezos on the CBS program 60 Minutes in December 2013 and in commercial operation since 2022. It uses the MK30, an 83-pound electric aircraft that takes off vertically, cruises on wings, and releases a package of five pounds or less from a hover about 13 feet above a customer's yard without landing. It holds a 14 CFR Part 119 air carrier certificate authorizing operations under Part 135, and the US Federal Aviation Administration records it as the first company to operate a drone heavier than 55 pounds under such a certificate, from August 2020 at Pendleton, Oregon.[1] It is among the most heavily funded efforts in drone delivery and among the slowest to scale: thirteen years on, Amazon has never published how many packages it has delivered by drone.

Origins and the long gap
Bezos revealed Prime Air on 60 Minutes in December 2013 with a pre-recorded demonstration of an octocopter lifting a package off a conveyor and setting it down in a customer's yard, predicting a fleet within five years.[3] The first actual customer delivery came three years later and on another continent: in the first week of December 2016, near Amazon's test site outside Cambridge, England, a drone carried a television streaming stick and a bag of popcorn to a nearby garden. Bezos posted that the flight took 13 minutes from click to delivery. The trial was open to exactly two customers, both with large gardens close to the depot, and flew only in daylight and good weather.[4]
Amazon later scaled back the UK work. In 2019 Jeff Wilke, then Amazon's consumer chief, said drones would be flying "within months"; the FAA certificate arrived in 2020, and commercial deliveries did not begin until December 2022, in Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas, both chosen for their demographics and topography.[3][5]
The program has a documented record of reorganization and attrition. Gur Kimchi, a Prime Air co-founder, was replaced in 2020 by David Carbon, a former Boeing executive brought in to turn Prime Air into a business with a defensible budget.[3] In January 2023, days after an internal target of 10,000 deliveries for the year was circulated, Prime Air lost a significant number of employees in what CNBC called the largest round of layoffs in Amazon's history; Andy Jassy's announcement of 4 January 2023 put the combined November and January cuts at "just over 18,000 roles."[3][39] One employee wrote that half the team at the Pendleton, Oregon test range was cut.[9] By May 2023 Amazon told CNBC it had completed just 100 deliveries across both markets, blaming the pace of FAA approvals.[3]
Retrenchment continued. Amazon closed Lockeford in April 2024, saying it was prioritizing resources.[5] It withdrew from College Station on 31 August 2025 after nearly three years, citing an expiring lease and a shift to launching from existing fulfillment buildings rather than standalone drone ports; the city and the company had failed to agree on an alternative site after sustained noise complaints.[10][11][38] In December 2025 it abandoned its planned Italian service after tests at San Salvo, Abruzzo, saying "the broader business regulatory framework in the country does not, at this time, support our longer-term objectives for this program." Italy's civil aviation authority ENAC called the decision unexpected.[12]
Aircraft generations
Amazon has published a design lineage rather than a spec sheet for each aircraft. In June 2022 it named four designs: the MK4, the first to fulfil a customer order; the MK21 quadcopter, which carried the package inside the fuselage; the MK23, its first hybrid capable of vertical takeoff and winged forward flight; and the MK27-2, used for the 2022 launches. It says it built more than two dozen prototypes in total.[13] The MK27 was shown publicly at re:MARS in Las Vegas in June 2019.[14]

The MK30 was revealed in November 2022 and entered service in the West Valley Phoenix metro area and College Station in November 2024.[17][8] Amazon says it was built from a blank sheet over roughly two years and flew 1,070 hours across more than 6,300 test flights, ending with 360 hours of FAA certification flying at Pendleton.[8] Stephen Wells, Prime Air's chief project engineer, called it "the first drone we have developed from the ground up using a requirements-based process."[8]
The delivery mechanism is the same across both generations and is unusual: the aircraft does not land at the customer. It descends vertically over a pre-mapped delivery point, opens a two-door internal receptacle at about 13 feet above ground, drops the package, then climbs back to transit altitude. FAA documents state plainly that the drone touches the ground nowhere except its home pad, apart from contingency landings, and record Prime Air's own safety guidance, used as an input to the FAA noise model, that no person, animal or object should be within 5 metres (16.4 feet) of the delivery point, and that the drone aborts if it detects one.[2] Amazon's public advice to customers is looser: keep "about 10 feet of open space."[22]
Autonomy, perception and the limits of disclosure
Prime Air's technical case rests on the sense-and-avoid system Amazon argues is what lets it fly beyond visual line of sight without ground observers. Amazon framed the goal in 2022 in two parts: in transit the aircraft must recognize static obstacles such as chimneys and moving objects on the horizon such as other aircraft, and reroute automatically; on descent it must confirm the area around the delivery point is clear of people, animals and obstacles.[13]
The MK30's perception stack is camera-led with radar support. Amazon says it "uses advanced machine learning algorithms trained to accurately identify objects like humans, animals, obstacles, and other aircraft," and that cameras also decide in flight whether an evasive maneuver is needed against another aircraft.[8] In its December 2025 FAA comments the company described "our sophisticated onboard computer vision system, which has been proven to detect all types of aircraft, from planes and helicopters to balloons and paragliders."[18] This is the capability Amazon demonstrated to FAA inspectors to win beyond-visual-line-of-sight approval, flying in the presence of real aircraft, helicopters and a hot air balloon.[6] The models are an application of computer vision and object detection rather than anything Amazon has published in detail: no peer-reviewed paper, no architecture description, no benchmark for the detect-and-avoid system.
Two design decisions are documented. First, redundancy and sensor fusion: a separate monitoring computer watches the primary flight control algorithm and can hand control to a backup controller and trigger a return-to-home on detecting an in-flight anomaly.[8] Second, the drone plans against what it sees rather than only against stored maps. A 2025 engineering post by Amir Navot, a senior principal scientist at Prime Air, and Stephen Wells describes a Safe Contingent Landing, in which the aircraft ends its mission early after sudden high winds, a cell tower outage, unexpected emergency air traffic, or multiple redundant-system failures. Descending, it scans below with cameras and radar for people, animals, obstacles and unstable terrain, and if the spot is blocked it "looks for nearby alternatives in real time. It does not just follow pre-loaded maps."[19]
Amazon also removed a step that used to require human effort. Until 2025 customers had to place a physical QR-code tile in the yard; the MK30 generation replaced this with digital maps that identify obstacle-free "delivery zones" and then delivery points at each eligible address, screening out hazards that look flat from above, such as swimming pools. Amazon says this removed the physical survey from onboarding and lets it quote a delivery time accurate to within five minutes.[20]
How much human supervision remains is not disclosed. Amazon says a trained operations team monitors every flight's path, but that the landing decision itself can be made by the aircraft's highly automated navigation system.[19] In the United Kingdom the BBC reported that an operator tracks the drone from screens at the base and liaises with air traffic control at nearby Teesside Airport when needed, a model closer to teleoperation monitoring than hands-on piloting.[7] Amazon has not published how many aircraft one operator supervises, and that ratio is the central economic variable in drone delivery. David Carbon's framing is that "this is effectively an autonomous drone that can do what a pilot does in a flight deck. It can do what ground crews do, and it can deliver a package."[7] A weather service looking 75 minutes ahead decides whether drone delivery is offered at checkout at all.[20]
Regulatory position
Amazon's authorizations are specific and are frequently reported imprecisely. The FAA's package delivery page records that Amazon Prime Air "was the first company to operate a drone larger than 55 pounds under a 14 CFR part 119 air carrier certificate as a standard part 135 operator," beginning commercial operations in August 2020 in Pendleton, Oregon.[1] Amazon says it "received an Air Carrier Certificate from the FAA in 2020 that allowed Amazon to operate as an airline and deliver small packages via drone."[6] A Part 135 certificate confers neither permission to fly beyond visual line of sight nor permission to fly anywhere in particular: the operations specifications name each area, which is why expansion is site by site.[1]
Beyond-visual-line-of-sight approval came separately, announced 30 May 2024, initially to expand College Station and then as the basis for new markets.[6] By December 2024 the MK30 was approved to fly beyond visual line of sight from the first day of operations at a new location, which Amazon called an industry first.[8] In May 2025 the FAA cleared Prime Air to carry devices containing lithium-ion batteries, adding iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, AirPods, AirTags and Ring doorbells to a catalogue Amazon says exceeds 60,000 items.[21][20]
Each new market also needs environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act. The FAA signed findings of no significant impact for 22 delivery centers across five Texas metro areas (Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, El Paso, Houston and San Antonio) on 5 February 2026, four in Detroit and two in Kansas City on 1 May 2026, and six across Florida on 1 June 2026; draft assessments for Baton Rouge and Omaha closed on 22 July 2026, and one covering three Chicago-area centers runs from 15 July to 14 August 2026.[2] These documents are the fullest public record of what Prime Air is authorized to do, and the source of most verified MK30 specifications, though as the next section shows they are a poor guide to when a market actually opens.
The rule that would replace this case-by-case regime, 14 CFR Part 108 for routine beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations, is not final. Docket FAA-2025-1908 under RIN 2120-AL82 contains a notice of proposed rulemaking published 7 August 2025 at 90 FR 38212 and no final rule; the 240-day deadline set by Executive Order 14307, which fell on 1 February 2026, was missed. Amazon's December 2025 comments argued that all crewed aircraft below 500 feet should be electronically conspicuous, that advanced detect-and-avoid should be required in more classes of airspace than proposed, and, notably, that package delivery be excluded from the lighter "permitted" track and held to the certificated standard regardless of fleet size.[18] That last position would raise the regulatory floor under smaller competitors.
Markets and scale
Amazon publishes no consolidated list of live markets, and reported launch dates conflict between outlets. Prime Air brought Pontiac, Michigan; San Antonio and Waco, Texas; and Ruskin, Florida online during 2025, alongside the original Phoenix-area site at Tolleson, Arizona,[22] and added Richardson, in the Dallas suburbs, in December 2025.[23] Kansas City, Kansas followed on 9 February 2026, identified in trade coverage as the seventh active US metropolitan area. CNBC had reported in November 2025 that "Kansas City, Missouri" was already online, but the site is on the Kansas side and local reporting had it still preparing to launch in mid-November 2025.[45][22] Baton Rouge became Amazon's first Louisiana market on 7 July 2026,[46] and Papillion, Nebraska its first in that state on 30 July 2026.[47] Prime Air is therefore live in seven US states, superseding the five the BBC recorded in May 2026.[7]
Two cautions follow. A claim circulating on reference sites that eight US metros including the Chicago suburbs were operating in early 2026 does not hold up: Chicago's draft environmental assessment did not go out for comment until 15 July 2026, and the seven markets active then were Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, San Antonio, Tampa, Detroit and Kansas City.[45] The converse inference is equally unsafe. FAA document dates are not launch dates in either direction: the Kansas City record of decision was signed 1 June 2026, four months after service began on the Kansas side, and Baton Rouge and Omaha were flying while their draft assessments were still fresh.[2][46][47]

Amazon's Papillion release called it "Amazon's 11th Prime Air location in the U.S.," naming Phoenix, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Waco, Baton Rouge, Tampa and Kansas City alongside it. The ordinal does not reconcile with that list, which totals ten, so Amazon is either counting facilities rather than metros or omitting a site; Houston appears only in Amazon's list and is not separately documented in the reporting surveyed here.[47]
Darlington, County Durham is the only Prime Air operation outside the United States. It launched in May 2026 under a Civil Aviation Authority trial authorization running to year-end, capped at ten flights per hour and 100 deliveries per day on weekdays within the same 7.5-mile radius, and requires temporary protected airspace granted only to mid-June when the service opened. Customers need a garden. Amazon had said in 2023 that UK service would start in 2024.[7]
What Amazon has and has not disclosed about volume
This is the single most misreported fact about Prime Air, and worth stating precisely.
Amazon has never published a cumulative drone delivery total. The most authoritative place such a number would appear is the annual shareholder letter, and it is not there. Jassy's 2026 letter, excerpted on 10 April 2026, says only that "Prime Air now has a design that'll scale, plans to serve communities with 30 million customers by year-end, and expects to deliver half a billion packages by the end of this decade (with an aim to deliver inside 30 minutes)."[25] No count of deliveries made appears.

The widely repeated figure of roughly 16,000 deliveries as of February 2026 is a trade-press estimate, not an Amazon figure. It appears in DroneXL's coverage, stated as fact without a source or method, and has been copied onward from there.[16][24][27] No Amazon disclosure, earnings call, shareholder letter or regulatory filing found in this research contains it, and it should never be presented as something Amazon published. It is also hard to reconcile with other trade reporting: DroneLife said in April 2026 that Amazon had "reportedly made more than 15,000 package deliveries in Richardson" alone since that single market opened in December 2025, two months after the supposed programme-wide total of 16,000.[32]
The 500 million packages per year target is a long-standing aspiration, not a plan in progress. David Carbon stated it publicly at an Amazon event in November 2022 as a goal for the end of the decade, covering cities such as Seattle, Boston and Atlanta.[9] Amazon restated it in the May 2024 BVLOS post ("To achieve our goal of delivering 500 million packages, per year, by drone, by the end of this decade, we knew we had to design a system capable of serving highly populated areas"),[6] again in December 2024, and again in the 2026 shareholder letter.[8][25] It has been repeated for more than three years with no interim milestone attached.
Safety record
Prime Air's incident record is unusually well documented because Part 135 operations are reportable to the FAA and NTSB.

The NTSB opened a separate preliminary investigation into each aircraft. The report on the second, N791PA (WPR26LA002), is the most detailed public document Amazon's regulators have released on a Prime Air accident. The crane, a 275-ton Link-Belt ATC-3275, arrived at 05:30 and was erected between 07:30 and 08:00, while Amazon's ground surveillance crews had completed their morning rooftop obstruction scan at about 06:58 and found nothing. The planned route altitude was about 200 feet; the crane operator estimated the drones struck at 150 to 165 feet. Flight data for N791PA show it descending from about 200 feet to about 60 feet in four seconds before contact was lost at 09:58:08. Both aircraft flew under FAA exemption 18601E. The Class 3 inquiry has published no probable cause.[34][35]
The companion report on the first aircraft, N579PA (WPR26LA001), is more striking: its flight track simply stops at 09:49:03 at about 200 feet, its planned cruise altitude, roughly 150 feet west of the crane, with no descent at all. The crane's boom was extended to about 197 feet.[40] An obstacle appearing after the last human survey, inside the planned corridor and at the planned altitude, is a direct test of what the onboard perception system is supposed to do, and Amazon has published nothing about why the crane was not detected and avoided.
Economics, reception and competitive position
Prime Air is expensive relative to what it replaces, and unlike a ground delivery robot it cannot batch orders: one package per flight.[37][11] Internal projections reviewed by Business Insider in 2022 forecast about $63 per drone delivery in 2025, against roughly $3.47 per package through Amazon's ground network by one consultancy's estimate, and put the cost under the then-current trial at "at least $484."[36] Consumer pricing appears to have been cut during 2026: trade coverage in February and early July 2026 put it at $4.99 per delivery for Prime members and $9.99 otherwise,[24][45] while Amazon's Papillion release of 30 July 2026 quotes $2.99 and $4.99, free to Prime members on orders of $50 or more.[47] Amazon has never disclosed Prime Air's losses; a 2024 analysis characterized the program as deeply unprofitable on the strength of those figures.[37]
The most persistent objection has been noise. College Station residents described the MK27-2 as sounding like "a giant hive of bees" and complained of disrupted sleep for nightshift workers; one, living less than 500 feet from the launch pad, played a chainsaw recording at a council meeting. The city measured drones at 47 to 61 decibels.[11] The FAA's supplemental assessment concluded that noise at any residential property line would not exceed DNL 55 dB, a day-night average not directly comparable to the city ordinance, which treats noise above 63 dB from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., or 56 dB overnight, as a potential nuisance.[41] Mayor John Nichols wrote to the FAA in July 2024 opposing Amazon's request to raise flights from 200 to 469 per day and expand the operating area from 44 to 174 square miles.[11] Amazon eventually left. The MK30 is quantifiably quieter, roughly 6 dB lower per overflight with a delivery-point noise footprint less than half the diameter,[2] but the pattern recurred in Richardson, where residents reported six to eight drones an hour at 50 to 100 feet above their rooflines and Amazon agreed in 2026 to raise the transition altitude to 225 feet, create a no-fly zone over a church, and route some outbound flights over commercial areas first.[32]
Against competitors, and against the wider autonomous vehicle logistics field, Amazon's architecture is the outlier. Wing, Zipline, Manna and others hover at altitude and lower packages on a tether, keeping the airframe above rooftops, cars and cranes; Amazon descends the whole aircraft to 13 feet. It is also far heavier: 83 pounds at maximum takeoff weight to carry five, against Wing platforms under 15 and 25 pounds.[2] Trade coverage has made this the central criticism of the design, since kinetic energy in a failure scales with mass.[16] On volume the gap is wide, and every competitor figure that follows is self-reported and unaudited. Zipline said on 14 July 2026 it had "completed more than 2.5 million commercial deliveries, including one million in the last year alone," across more than 135 million autonomous miles.[42] Wing's About page, retrieved 1 August 2026, claims "well over one million completed deliveries to homes" since 2012.[43] Meituan reported that by the end of 2025 its drones had opened 70 routes and completed more than 780,000 cumulative orders.[44] Amazon publishes nothing comparable.
Amazon's counterargument is that it is not building a drone company but, in the post announcing its FAA comments, "fundamentally an aerospace program rooted in rigorous aerospace principles and standards" embedded in a fulfillment network.[18] The bet is that drones launched from the more than 85 same-day fulfillment centers Amazon already runs cost little incremental infrastructure, which is why the standalone drone port used at Lockeford and College Station was abandoned for co-location.[25][5] Whether that closes the gap between the 170,000 lifetime flights Carbon cited in May 2026 and half a billion a year is, on the published evidence, an open question.[7]
