Instinct (trading platform)
This article is about the Y Combinator-backed trading software from instinct.xyz. For the personal-assistant agent from Spear Street Technology, see Instinct (AI assistant).
Instinct is an AI trading product from a San Francisco startup in Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch. The company describes it as a "proactive team of agents" that searches thousands of markets, investigates opportunities and runs around the clock, so that an individual trader can work with some of the research capacity of an investment firm.[1][9] Instinct announced the product on X on October 14, 2026, calling it "the first frontier agent harness built to give individual traders the capabilities of an investment firm." That "first" is the company's own framing.[1] As of October 27, 2026, the website offered access only through an early-access waitlist, and its documentation page said that docs were "coming soon."[7][8]
The website's copyright line names the operating entity as Assonant, Inc.[7] The founders are Joon Won Song (chief executive) and Eunju Moon (chief technology officer), according to the company's Y Combinator profile.[9]

Name
Instinct is unrelated to Instinct (AI assistant), the personal-assistant agent that Spear Street Technology introduced in August 2026 and that uses the instinct.co domain. The trading product uses instinct.xyz and the X handle @instinct_xyz.[1][7] At least one reply to the October 14 launch post questioned the name, asking whether it was already taken. The company's account answered one of them: "We had it since last Christmas!"[14] A separate Y Combinator company, Instinct Space, builds lunar landers and is also unrelated.[15]
Product
Instinct's launch thread describes the problem it targets as fragmentation. The company wrote that finance is moving toward "a global, 24/7 future, with tens of thousands of markets trading at once," and that an individual trader covering that ground still has to stitch together "information and workflows across disconnected tools."[3] Its stated answer is to bring that setup "into one harness, with agents that have their own computers." According to the company, the agents can synthesize market data, news and social activity in parallel, draw connections across markets, build tools, investigate opportunities, and "carry the work through to execution."[4] In AI usage, an agent harness is the runtime layer that supplies a model's loop, tools, memory and guardrails so that it can act as an AI agent; Instinct applies the term to a multi-agent trading setup.
The homepage, headlined "Trade with superhuman instinct" and "Frontier intelligence for traders," presents the product as a set of features.[7] All of them are vendor descriptions illustrated with sample interface screens, not independently tested capabilities:
| Feature (website heading) | Company description |
|---|---|
| Find the trade | Says Instinct is "purpose-built to find profitable trades across all markets," lets users follow large ("whale") positions in real time, and offers "on-demand intelligence, right where you trade"[7] |
| Agents that work 24/7 | Agents monitor markets continuously; the sample prompt asks to be pinged "when news, socials and charts all line up"[7] |
| Visualize anything | Users ask in plain language for a chart or market view, such as where large holders are positioned against the crowd[7] |
| Trade your worldview | Converts a written thesis into a structured trade; the example pairs a leveraged long position with a hedge and attaches exit conditions[7] |
| Share your instinct | A social layer where users publish market calls and "followers copy your trade in one tap"[7] |
| Lowest fees | Claims a fee of $1.00 on a $10,000 trade and says other apps charge up to five times as much[7] |
| Trade on the go | Mobile and desktop access[7] |
The sample screens and market icons on the site span US and South Korean equities (for example NVIDIA, Apple, Intel, Samsung and SK hynix), an S&P 500 market, cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ether and several smaller tokens), and commodities including gold, silver and oil.[7] The fee comparison table names Phantom, FOMO and Liquid at $5.00 and Based at $2.50 for the same $10,000 trade. Those comparisons are the company's own and were not independently checked for this article.[7] The homepage and launch thread do not name the AI models behind the agents or the venues where trades are executed.[1][7]
The investor-tools directory AI for Investors, which reviewed the product page in October 2026, summarized it as an early-access app whose agents watch news, social chatter, charts and smart-money positions, alert users when signals line up, and help turn a written view into a trade that others can copy. It listed pricing as early access with no published subscription price.[12]
Thesis
Instinct's pitch rests on an argument about why investment firms have had an edge over individuals. The launch post says that "for decades, institutional advantage has come from organizing talented people around large pools of capital," and that Instinct makes that "organizational capacity available to individuals."[1] The Y Combinator profile adds that the asset-management industry "is built around the scarcity of financial expertise and the cost of organizing people around capital," that institutions cover global markets by employing analysts, researchers and quants around the clock, and that "AI turns this organizational capacity into software."[9]
The company describes the intended division of labor this way: "The individual becomes the portfolio manager. Instinct becomes the investment firm operating around them." It argues that as institutional advantages spread, the edge "concentrates in each trader's worldview, judgment, and bets."[6][9] It also says smaller personal funds can pursue opportunities "too small or too specialized to justify institutional attention" and make bets that do not fit an established mandate.[5] The company's stated mission is to build the "OS" that individuals working with teams of agents will run on.[16]
Both the launch thread and the Y Combinator profile end with a forecast: "The first one-person investment firm managing $1 billion will emerge within two years. It will run on Instinct."[6][9] This is a company prediction, not an observed result.
Team
According to Y Combinator's directory, Joon Won Song, the founder and CEO, was previously a quantitative developer at Squarepoint Capital and studied electrical engineering and computer science at Imperial College London. Eunju Moon, the founder and CTO, studied theoretical physics at Imperial and left a PhD in quantum computing at the University of Southern California.[9] The company's launch thread describes the wider team as "researchers and engineers from Squarepoint Capital, European Laboratory for Particle Physics, USC Quantum Computing Center, and Toss."[2]
Launch and reception
The announcement went out from @instinct_xyz on October 14, 2026, with a video of about 26 seconds and a follow-up thread setting out the thesis.[1][2] On the same day the company told a user who reported a waitlist sign-up problem that the issue "should be fixed now."[17] Replying to the same user that evening (October 15 UTC), it said the "first batch intake" from the waitlist was "planned next week."[13]
Coverage so far has been brief. RuntimeWire, which reported the launch on October 14 from the company's thread, said Instinct's public materials "leave its live capabilities and investment results unproven."[10] The crypto news site ChainCatcher ran a short item on October 15 summarizing the launch and the company's forecast about one-person investment firms.[11] As of October 27, 2026, the website showed no trading performance figures, and its documentation page said docs were "coming soon."[7][8]
Context
Instinct belongs to a wider group of products that apply AI agents to retail and professional trading, part of the broader use of AI in finance. The AI for Investors directory places it in a trading-tools category alongside products such as Composer, an AI-assisted automated strategy service, and Numerai, a crowdsourced AI hedge fund.[12] Its coverage of crypto tokens alongside equities and commodities overlaps with the area covered in AI in cryptocurrency.
