Runway App Studio is a no-code app builder inside Runway, the New York generative video company. A user describes a creative tool in plain language, and App Studio's agent plans, designs, builds and hosts a custom app with its own interface that generates images, video and audio using Runway's models, the workspace's Brand Kits and its Workflows [1][4]. Runway announced App Studio on 26 October 2026 and made it available on all paid plans at launch, with building, running and hosting billed against a customer's existing Runway credits [1][8]. Runway says its earlier Runway Apps, a catalog of ready-made, single-purpose tools launched in October 2025, now live in App Studio, though the help center still keeps them in a separate classic Apps panel [2][3][4][9].

Background

App Studio builds on three earlier Runway products. Apps, introduced on 14 October 2025, were described by Runway as "an ever-growing collection of use case specific workflows that make it easier than ever to get to great outputs," rolling out on the web with more added every week [3][9]. The help center lists them by output type, for example Character Swap, Backdrop, Lighting, Upscale and Product Shot Video Builder for video, Ad Localization, Expand Image and Slide Maker for images, and SFX for audio [6]. Workflows, a node-based editor for chaining models and intermediate steps, followed on 24 October 2025, and from 4 December 2025 a Workflow could be published as an App that other members of the workspace could run through a simplified interface with locked settings [3][7]. Runway Agent, a conversational "AI creative partner" for developing and producing a video in one conversation, launched on 13 May 2026; by July 2026 it could build and run entire Workflows from a plain-language description [3].

Runway's launch post frames App Studio as an attempt to bring the on-demand software creation that large language models and coding agents gave to software builders to people "working with media, from brand and marketing teams to global advertisers and Hollywood studios" [1]. The company argues that a team's creative process usually "lives in one person's prompts and settings," and that App Studio turns that knowledge into a tool others can run [1].

Runway's changelog dates the App Studio entry 23 October 2026, while the announcement post and the X thread are dated 26 October 2026 [1][3][8]. Runway said in the post that "App Studio is available to all paid plans now" [1]. Before launch, Runway ran an early access program with design partners who, according to the company, built "dozens of custom apps" [1].

How it works

Runway's product page summarizes the process in three steps: describe the app, shape it in plain language with the option to roll back, and share it [2]. Runway says App Studio "codes, tests and deploys" each app, "with no code, API keys or hosting to manage" [2].

The help center describes the builder in more detail [4]:

  • Building. The user types a description into the App Studio home page; a single sentence such as "Convert ad scripts into shot-by-shot visual storyboards" is enough to start. A builder view opens with the conversation with the agent on the left and a live preview on the right. Early in a build the agent asks the user to pick one of three color palettes and can take a logo for the design.
  • Iterating. After the build, changes are requested the same way, either by describing them or by selecting an element, drawing on the preview or marking a spot. A Simple or Detailed view shows plain-language progress or every step the agent takes.
  • Inspecting. A Code tab shows the app's files, and after publishing the source can be downloaded as a zip. Runway's launch post says "the code stays visible for anyone who wants to inspect it" [1].
  • Models and settings. Each generation step in an app is listed with the model behind it in App settings, and swapping a model makes App Studio rebuild the app. The same panel holds secrets for any keys an app needs.
  • Versions. Changes stay in the builder's preview until the creator publishes again; a Versions button shows which version is live [4][5].
  • Background builds. App Studio keeps working for up to eight hours after the browser tab is closed [4].

Published apps can reach the internet, for example to call an external API or database, unless a workspace turns internet access off, in which case apps can reach only Runway and App Studio services [4].

Converting Agent sessions and Workflows

An existing Agent session or Workflow can be turned into an app in one click. Runway says this locks in "the prompt, model chain and settings" and gives teammates an interface with only the inputs they need [1][2]. The product page FAQ distinguishes the products this way: "Agent is built for one-off generation. App Studio packages a prompt, model chain and brand settings into a tool anyone can run again and again" [2].

Inputs available to apps

At launch, Runway says, apps can use its image, video and audio models along with a workspace's Brand Kits, Workflows, Assets and References, and they follow the same model controls as the rest of the account [1]. When a Brand Kit, reference or underlying Workflow changes, Runway says new outputs reflect the update [1].

Built-in and example apps

Runway shipped App Studio with ready-made apps that can be run as they are or remixed into a new app [1]. The three launch sources name different sets:

AppDescription (per Runway)Named in
Character SwapRecasts a source video with a new character from an image or prompt, using a depth-map guided keyframe and Seedance 2.5Launch post, product page, X thread [1][2][8]

Expanded article table

The example apps in the X thread run from their own addresses on the runway.studio domain [8]. Inside the product, the App Studio Store has two groups: Official Runway apps, which open directly, and other apps that are first added to the workspace, where they appear under Example apps [4].

Runway also listed use cases for custom apps, among them turning a script into storyboards and then previz, bringing 3D models or animatics into an app that adds texturing, lighting and lensing, generating variations from one image, and building a simple interface over a workspace's assets [1][2].

Early access customers

The most detailed customer example is KPF, the global architecture firm, which Runway says used App Studio to build an app that animates design renderings: designers mark what should move in a still image, draw a camera path and get back a directed video [1]. KPF Associate Principal Andy Christoforou said: "Runway's App Studio lets us build our own AI tools around the way our teams work, so every designer in the studio can use them, not just a few specialists, all within our own environment" [1]. (KPF named Christoforou an associate principal in its New York office in July 2025 [12]. Runway's product page attributes the same quote to "KFP," a transposition of the firm's name [2].)

Runway described other early access apps without naming the companies [1]:

Customer type (per Runway)App
Film studioTurns one location photo and a drawn camera path into a continuous cinematic move, for planning shots before booking a drone or helicopter
Film studioTranslates a trailer's on-screen text into other languages while keeping the original fonts, effects and layout

Sharing and administration

Every app is private to its creator until it is published [1][5]. When publishing, the creator chooses an audience: Only you, Everyone in the workspace, or Specific people listed by email; audience changes take effect on save without republishing [4][5]. Team and Enterprise customers can share apps with specific teammates, a project or the whole workspace [1]. Free users can run built-in apps and apps shared with them but need a paid plan to build their own [1][11].

Runway's launch post says paid customers can also publish a public link: visitors see a customizable preview and can sign in with a Runway account to run the app on their own credits [1]. The help center's sharing article, as of 27 October 2026, lists an "Anyone with a link" audience in its publishing steps but elsewhere states that every audience needs an account in the creator's workspace and that there is "no public link option" [5]. When someone runs an app on their own credits, the output is saved to their Assets, and the app's creator chooses whether generated assets stay private or go to a project or the workspace [1].

Administration features described by Runway [1][4]:

  • A model disabled in the admin panel is disabled in every app, and users see why.
  • Admins can turn App Studio off by workspace (on Enterprise plans, from organization settings) and decide whether public links are allowed.
  • Every Enterprise app link requires sign-in with an existing Runway account.
  • Admins can see App Studio usage across every app in the workspace. (Separately, any app's creator can open Insights from the app's card to see visits over 7, 30 or 90 days and how many people used it [5].)

As of 27 October 2026, the help center says apps cannot be deleted or unpublished; the workaround is to set the audience to Only you [4][5]. Workspaces also have a cap on the number of apps, shown on a counter (the help center's example reads "1 of 250 apps used"), and unpublished apps and Store apps count toward it [4].

Pricing

App Studio is included in every paid Runway plan with no add-on purchase [1][2]. Building, running and hosting apps draw from the existing credit balance, each app shows its usage, and visitors to a publicly shared app pay for their own generations [1]. According to the help center, starting a build session requires a minimum balance of about 700 credits, and building is charged in blocks of about 50 credits for the AI models that work on the app during the session [4].

Relationship to Runway Apps

Runway's product page says the earlier Runway Apps "now live in App Studio with no action needed" and can be used as before or remixed [2]. The help center describes the transition in more detail: the previous Apps panel remains available through a "Switch to classic Apps" option at the bottom of the App Studio menu, and the App Studio Store holds a different set of ready-made apps [4][6]. The older route of publishing a Workflow as an App is also still documented [7].

Reception

AlphaSignal filed App Studio under vibe coding and app builders and said its integration with Runway's models, accounts, credits and Brand Kits removes the frontend scaffolding, credential management and deployment work needed to build a similar tool on general-purpose platforms such as Replit Agent or v0 [10]. The same article listed open questions from Runway's launch materials, including support for custom code, webhooks or external APIs, source-code export, custom domains and per-app roles [10]; some of these are addressed in Runway's help center, which documents source download as a zip, app secrets and internet access for published apps [4]. Japanese video-production site Frame World summarized the launch, the six built-in apps and the plan-based sharing rules [11].

Runway's own FAQ positions App Studio against general vibe coding tools by noting that "every app comes with Runway's image, video and audio models and your team's Runway accounts and credits, so there's nothing to connect or host" [2].
