Aire is a stealth-mode artificial intelligence research company founded in 2026 by former researchers from Meta and OpenAI. French Tech Journal, summarizing a June 2026 report by Sifted, named its co-founders as Irwan Bello, a former OpenAI researcher, and Gabriel Synnaeve and Yossi Adi, both formerly of Meta FAIR.[1][2] According to Sifted, the company is based between the United States, France and Israel.[1][2] According to Sifted's reporting as summarized by French Tech Journal, Aire plans to build an "AI scientist" that automates research and development for enterprise customers in fields ranging from biology and physics to finance.[2] In October 2026 Synnaeve said the company was "doing autonomous AI research agents and really serving it as a product".[3]

Aire has not published funding details itself. Sifted reported on June 30, 2026 that the founders were seeking $400 million, and French Tech Journal, citing Sifted, described the raise as a seed round at a valuation of around $2 billion.[1][2] In September 2026, TheMarker reported that a round worth hundreds of millions of dollars was in advanced stages and that General Catalyst was one of the company's investors, while Haaretz reported that Aire had already secured tens of millions of dollars.[4][5] None of these reports describes the larger round as completed.

History

Formation

The company's French subsidiary, Flops & Friends France, was created on June 4, 2026 as a single-shareholder simplified joint-stock company (SASU) and entered in the Paris trade and companies register on June 8, 2026, with share capital of 1,000 euros. Its registered activity is the design, development and publishing of software, and Gabriel Synnaeve is listed as its president.[6] French Tech Journal reported that Aire is incorporated in the United States as Flops & Friends, Inc., with the French company as its subsidiary.[3]

Israeli coverage in September 2026 said that Adi founded the lab that year with two French partners.[4][5] TheMarker described Adi as having been, until recently, a researcher at Meta's development center in Tel Aviv.[4]

Sifted report

On June 30, 2026, Sifted reporter Daphné Leprince-Ringuet reported, citing three sources with direct knowledge of the matter, that a trio of Meta and OpenAI alumni were seeking $400 million for a new AI startup called Aire. The publicly visible part of the report said the stealth-mode company would be based between the US, France and Israel; the rest of the article is behind Sifted's paywall.[1] French Tech Journal's AI newsletter summarized the report the next day, naming the three co-founders, describing Synnaeve as based in Paris, and giving the "AI scientist" description of the company's goal.[2]

Israeli reports

On September 17, 2026, journalist Sagi Cohen reported on Aire in Hebrew for TheMarker and in English for Haaretz. TheMarker's report said the lab was still operating under the radar, was in advanced stages of completing a funding round worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and counted General Catalyst, an investor in Anthropic, among its backers.[4] The Haaretz version described Aire as an AI "neolab" that hoped "to join a small club of AI 'neolabs' that have raised hundreds of millions of dollars while still at the research stage".[5]

First public remarks

On October 8, 2026, Synnaeve spoke on the "From minds to matters" panel at Wave by Vento, a technology conference in Turin. French Tech Journal called his remarks perhaps the most extensive public description of the company by anyone associated with it since Sifted's report.[3] He said Aire was "doing autonomous AI research agents and really serving it as a product" and that its goal was to "empower everybody to train their own AI models."[3]

Irwan Bello

Bello's personal website says he studied applied mathematics at Ecole Centrale Paris (M.S.) and was a graduate student at Stanford University. From 2016 to 2022 he was a research scientist at Google Brain, where he worked on large language models (sparsity, adaptive computation and distributed training) and on computer vision, including LambdaNetworks, an alternative to self-attention, and ResNet-RS, a study of training and scaling strategies for ResNet models. He was one of three equal-contribution authors of ST-MoE, a sparse mixture-of-experts model scaled to 269 billion parameters. His site lists him on the founding team of Character.AI from 2022 to 2023 and on the early ChatGPT team at OpenAI from 2023 to 2024, working on post-training, inference and GPT-4, and then as post-training lead on the founding team of Reflection AI from 2024 to 2026. For 2026 the site says he is "starting something new at the intersection of AI, research, compute and science" and gives his base as San Francisco.[7]

Gabriel Synnaeve

According to his Meta profile, Synnaeve received a PhD from the University of Grenoble in 2012 for work on Bayesian modeling applied to real-time strategy game AI, and programmed a bot that placed fourth in the AAAI AIIDE 2012 StarCraft AI competition. He was then a postdoctoral fellow in Emmanuel Dupoux's team at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, studying how babies acquire language, before joining Facebook AI Research as a postdoctoral researcher in 2015.[9] He is the last-listed author of the Code Llama paper, which introduced a family of code models built on Llama 2,[12] and of the September 2025 paper on Code World Model (CWM), a 32-billion-parameter open-weights model for research on code generation with world models.[13] He is also a co-author of the EnCodec neural audio codec and the MusicGen text-to-music model.[14][15]

Yossi Adi

Adi is an assistant professor (senior lecturer) at the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he heads the Spoken Language Processing Research Lab. He completed his PhD in computer science at Bar-Ilan University under Joseph Keshet, and his research centers on machine learning for speech and language.[8] His Meta profile lists him as a research scientist at FAIR in Tel Aviv.[10] With Synnaeve, he co-authored EnCodec (2022), MusicGen (2023), Code Llama (2023) and CWM (2025).[12][13][14][15] His university page now says he is "starting something new at the intersection of AI, scientific research, and compute", and his LinkedIn profile describes him as chief research officer and co-founder of a stealth AI company.[8][11]

Research focus

Aire has given only a few public details about its work. Sifted's description, as summarized by French Tech Journal, is an "AI scientist" that can automate research and development for enterprise customers across fields such as biology, physics and finance.[2] At the October 2026 panel, Synnaeve placed the company's work in the context of AI for science, pointing to demand for models used in areas such as protein design and computational fluid dynamics. He said Aire wants to automate the process of training such models "from the data to the scaling laws to delivering a model that is qualified", and French Tech Journal reported that the company uses its own product to build the specialized models and infrastructure this requires.[3] French Tech Journal concluded that this "sounds like a research-and-development platform, not simply a general-purpose chatbot or a single model."[3]

The goal overlaps with academic work on AI research agents, which try to automate the design, implementation and training of machine learning models. Adi was a co-author of a November 2025 study of such agents by researchers at FAIR, which analyzed agent runs on MLE-bench and found that higher-performing agents tended to show greater ideation diversity, and that raising ideation diversity in a controlled experiment improved performance.[16]

Funding

All funding figures for Aire come from press reports based on unnamed sources. The company has not publicly confirmed an amount, a valuation or a list of investors.

The $2 billion figure is a reported target for a round in progress, not the price of a closed financing. Apart from General Catalyst, no investors are named in the publicly available parts of the reports cited here.[1][2][4][5]

Reception

Haaretz's headline called Aire an AI "neolab" launched by an Israeli former Meta researcher,[5] and Debarghya Das's "The Ultimate Neolab List" includes Aire.[17] French Tech Journal wrote that if the raise succeeds, Aire "would join a growing wave of heavily funded AI labs betting that the next frontier for AI is accelerating scientific discovery rather than simply boosting office productivity".[2] After Synnaeve's Turin remarks, it noted that they left "plenty of basic questions unanswered".[3]
