DoorDash Labs
DoorDash Labs is the robotics and automation organization inside DoorDash, the American local commerce and delivery company. Co-founder Stanley Tang has led it since November 2017, and DoorDash introduced it publicly on November 18, 2021. Labs built the Dot delivery robot, the Autonomous Delivery Platform dispatch layer, the SmartScale merchant device, and DoorDash Air, the company's first-party drone program, and it owns DoorDash's partnerships with outside drone delivery operators.

Founding date, and why there are three of them
No single founding date is correct, because three separate things happened at three different times.
DoorDash's 2026 proxy statement, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 20, 2026, states that Tang "has served as Head of DoorDash Labs, our internal robotics and automation organization, since November 2017."[2] That is the earliest dated claim, and it is a leadership start rather than the founding of a named unit.
DoorDash's own launch announcement says something different: "That's why, in 2018, we founded DoorDash Labs."[4] Bloomberg, reporting on the Dot unveiling in September 2025, wrote that the robotics efforts "have been led by Tang since 2018 under the DoorDash Labs unit."[16] Harrison Shih has been described as having helped launch the programs in 2018.[24] Neither DoorDash nor any outside source explains the gap between November 2017 and 2018, and DoorDash's announcement names no individual founder at all, writing only "we founded."
The third date is the public one. DoorDash introduced Labs by name on November 18, 2021, and used the announcement to hire Ashu Rege as its new Vice President of Autonomy.[4] Anything written as "DoorDash Labs, founded in 2021" is describing the press release, not the team.
Origin and early work
DoorDash's account of the group's beginning is short and unglamorous: "Starting in a conference room, we began building a small, scrappy team committed to the promise of automation and robotics technologies."[4] Before going public with the effort the team, by DoorDash's telling, "tested warehouse automation solutions and drones, partnered with industry players like Starship Technologies, Marble Robot, and Cruise Automation, and expanded our team with strategic acquisitions."[4]
DoorDash did not name those acquisitions. Reporting by The Robot Report a week after the launch identified two: Scotty Labs, a teleoperations company acquired in August 2019 whose technology let people remotely control self-driving vehicles, and Chowbotics, a robotic bowl-assembly company acquired in February 2021.[10] Those attributions come from The Robot Report rather than from DoorDash.
The Scotty Labs lineage is the more consequential of the two, because the shipped robot is supervised rather than unsupervised. DoorDash's own Dot page states: "If Dot encounters an issue, remote operators can step in to assist, and a local operations team is on hand to resolve anything that can't be managed remotely."[29] The phased Fremont rollout, agreed as a proposal and subject to an encroachment permit, puts numbers on that gradient: Phase 1A would allow up to three robots "chaperoned by local operators," and a later amended permit would allow up to 30 robots operating autonomously "with the capability to be operated remotely as needed."[28] Teleoperation is therefore a load-bearing part of the product, not a legacy asset, and the Dot article covers the autonomy stack behind it in depth.
The early architectural idea was a "hub to hub model." Rather than automate the whole trip, DoorDash proposed aggregating orders somewhere with high merchant density, such as a shopping mall or a DashMart, and having a robot ferry them to a consumer hub closer to the delivery address, with a human Dasher completing the final leg.[4][10] This is a middle-mile concept, and it is close to the opposite of the last-mile sidewalk-robot approach most competitors pursued. The shipped product, Dot, ended up doing complete door-to-door deliveries instead.
The patents
Bloomberg's characterization is that DoorDash "filed the first patents for a robot and laid out its vision in 2021."[16] The public record is slightly different, and the difference matters: the patents were granted in 2021, not filed then.

All three are assigned to DoorDash, Inc.[11][12][13] The utility patent describes a courier vehicle up to 36 inches wide, weighing roughly 200 to 300 pounds, travelling at 18 to 25 mph, with cargo space sized for "two to three twenty-two inch pizza boxes," operating on motor vehicle routes and pedestrian pathways alike, and carrying an elevated sensor module 3 to 5 feet high containing lidar, radar, cameras and microphones.[11] DoorDash told The Robot Report at the time that patents were not necessarily indicators of what was actually under development.[10] The eventual Dot is heavier and taller than the patent describes, but the road-plus-sidewalk premise and the raised sensor mast survived.
Leadership
Stanley Tang is a DoorDash co-founder, a director since May 2013, and Head of DoorDash Labs since November 2017. He was Chief Product Officer from May 2013 to November 2017 and has not held that title since. This is stated identically in DoorDash's investor-relations board biography, in the 2026 proxy statement filed April 20, 2026, and in the FY2025 Form 10-K, which refers to "Stanley Tang, our co-founder, Head of DoorDash Labs, and a member of our board of directors."[1][2][3] DoorDash's engineering blog bylines him as "a co-founder and the Head of DoorDash Labs."[5] He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University and worked as a software engineer at Meta for four months in 2012.[2] Outlets including TechCrunch, on the day of the DoorDash Air announcement, still describe him as chief product officer; that is inconsistent with DoorDash's own filings.[17]
Ashu Rege joined as Vice President of Autonomy, announced November 18, 2021, and is now styled VP and Head of Autonomy.[4][6] He came from Zoox, where he spent, in DoorDash's words, "the last several years leading the development of the company's entire software stack, both on-vehicle and offline," and over six years at the company grew the team from six engineers to 600 engineers and 150 operators.[4] Before Zoox he was, in DoorDash's words, "an early leader at Nvidia, advancing the company's engineering initiatives around computer vision, autonomous vehicles, robotics, drones, and more."[4]
Harrison Shih has a title history that tracks the group's maturation: Senior Director of DoorDash Labs in March 2024, Head of Product for DoorDash Labs in May and June 2025, and Head of DoorDash Air by July 2026.[18][19][20][8] He is a named inventor on all three of DoorDash's delivery-vehicle patents.[11][12][13] Before DoorDash he launched Google+ and Google Cloud Platform at Google and led international growth at the mobile gaming company GREE, and he teaches product development as an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University.[24]
A fourth name is worth recording even though he does not work in Labs. Milan Kovac, formerly Vice President, Optimus (Tesla Bot) at Tesla and before that Director of Optimus and Autopilot Engineering, where he led engineering for the Optimus humanoid robot program and the foundational software shared with Autopilot, joined DoorDash's board of directors in January 2026.[2]
Locations and size
DoorDash has never published a DoorDash Labs headquarters address or a headcount. The job listings attached to DoorDash's own engineering blog place Labs roles in Oakland, Dublin, Fremont, Sunnyvale, San Jose and San Francisco, California, and in Mesa, Arizona, including a Flight Test Engineer role for DoorDash Air based in San Francisco.[5] The unit's own public web presence has also lapsed: labs.doordash.com, the URL DoorDash directed readers to in its 2021 launch announcement, returns HTTP 403.[4]
Fremont is more than another job-posting city. Dot is built there. DoorDash's March 2, 2026 announcement of a collaboration with the City of Fremont says plainly that "Manufactured in Fremont, Dot is an all-electric, compact robot," and Ashu Rege framed the agreement as bringing "Dot from the factory to Main Street."[28] Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan described Dot as "an all-electric autonomous delivery robot manufactured right here in our city."[28] DoorDash does not name the manufacturer; Chain Store Age reported on March 16, 2026 that Dot "is manufactured by partner Sonic Manufacturing Technologies in Fremont," which makes contract manufacture rather than an owned factory the likeliest arrangement.[30] The same announcement also made Fremont a deployment market, so the city is both where Labs builds hardware and where it operates it.[28]
The San Francisco site is the only Labs facility with a public paper trail. In August 2025 DoorDash leased a 34,325 square foot warehouse at 1960 Folsom Street in the Mission District, about two miles from its headquarters, as research and development space for autonomous delivery technologies.[15] A June 2025 letter to San Francisco's zoning administrator described outdoor test flights up to roughly 150 feet above ground, no more than two drones operating at once, and no individual flight longer than 30 minutes, with most testing indoors.[15] DoorDash told the city it expected about 200 people to work there.[14][15]
The site sits in a Production, Distribution and Repair (PDR) district. At the request of DoorDash Labs, which Mission Local describes as "a subsidiary of the delivery company," the zoning administrator determined in August 2025 that drone testing qualifies as a "laboratory use" permitted in PDR.[14] Teamsters Local 665, which represents more than 70,000 Bay Area workers, appealed. Its principal officer, Tony Delorio, said: "This PDR property is meant for blue-collar jobs, but DoorDash is using it to develop technology designed to destroy jobs."[14] The Board of Appeals denied the appeal on November 19, 2025; the union filed a second appeal a week later on the grounds that only three of five board members were present.[14] The Bay Area Council, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the Mission Merchants Association supported DoorDash.[14] Organized-labor opposition to a delivery autonomy program of this kind, on the record and through a formal municipal process, is uncommon.
The Autonomous Delivery Platform
The Autonomous Delivery Platform (ADP) is the software layer Labs built to decide which delivery method handles which order. DoorDash announced it alongside Dot on September 30, 2025, and documented it in an engineering blog post co-authored by Tang and Rege.[5][6]
DoorDash's own definition: "The Autonomous Delivery Platform serves as an AI dispatcher, matching each order with the optimal delivery method based on factors like speed, cost, location, and experience. Whether that's a Dasher, a Dot on the road, a drone in the air, or a sidewalk robot, the platform orchestrates these decisions in real-time to optimize across our entire global network."[6]
How DoorDash frames the problem
The engineering post presents dispatch across heterogeneous fleets as "a complex, multi-objective optimization problem" that has to balance the characteristics of each order against those of each delivery method, plus consumer preferences, traffic, fleet positioning, and the real-time supply and demand of every mode.[5] DoorDash gives one hard number: ADP must integrate with order processing, the dispatching algorithm and consumer support "all while maintaining the sub-100ms response times for order evaluation."[5] That is a latency budget for the decision, not for the delivery, and it is the only published performance figure of any kind for the system.
The modes named as integrated are Dashers, Wing's drones, Coco Robotics' sidewalk robots, and Dot.[5] DoorDash treats Dot and sidewalk robots as separate categories, not the same thing, and describes ADP as needing to handle "the different dynamics of different delivery options (faster Dot, slower sidewalk robots) and fluctuating demand."[5]
Two forward-looking items are stated as work in progress rather than shipped: machine learning driven demand prediction, where DoorDash says "we're experimenting with increasingly ML-powered mechanisms of demand prediction in the ADP," and systems for assignment and coordination across a multi-modal fleet.[5] DoorDash's positioning line is a deliberate contrast with the self-driving car industry: "While others aim to build end-to-end AI for driving, we're building end-to-end AI for commerce."[5]
What it sits on top of
ADP is described as built "on top of our existing infrastructure," and DoorDash's Dasher-only dispatch work is the documented predecessor.[5] In February 2020 DoorDash's logistics team published its move away from bipartite matching solved with the Hungarian algorithm to a mixed-integer program framed as a vehicle routing problem, licensed from Gurobi. DoorDash reported the commercial solver was up to ten times faster than the Hungarian approach on its matching problem and 34 times faster on average than the open-source CBC solver, and that the optimizer runs on several regionally sharded instances multiple times a minute.[25] ADP generalizes that machinery from one fleet to several.
Maturity and status
As of September 30, 2025, DoorDash wrote: "We're in the early days of the ADP, rolling it out to cities where we are scaling deliveries by Dot, drone, and sidewalk robot alongside Dashers."[5] By July 29, 2026, Tang described it as the layer that "currently runs Dot, along with Dashers, our third-party partners that plug into our network, and soon our first-party drone program," and called it "the operating system for how things move through the physical world."[9] The two statements are consistent once "first-party" is read as the operative word: partner drones were already routed through the platform, DoorDash's own were not yet flying.
In investor materials ADP has been named in quarterly documents but has no place in the annual report, which is a fair signal of how material DoorDash currently considers it. DoorDash's Q3 2025 results press release, filed November 5, 2025, listed it among "several tools designed to improve logistics quality and efficiency, including a new mapping platform, SmartScale, our Autonomous Delivery Platform, and Dot."[23] In the Q4 2025 shareholder letter, filed February 18, 2026, chief executive Tony Xu wrote that "in the case of AVs, perhaps the most valuable part of what we're building is our Autonomous Delivery Platform, which will match vehicles to routes and manage the handoffs between AVs and Dashers, and everything in between."[22] By contrast the FY2025 Form 10-K, covering the year in which Dot and ADP were both announced, mentions DoorDash Labs exactly once, inside Tang's title in a voting-power risk factor, and contains no occurrence at all of "Autonomous Delivery Platform," "Dot," "robot" or "sidewalk"; autonomy appears only as competitive and regulatory risk boilerplate.[3]
Sourcing caveat
Every technical claim above originates with DoorDash: one engineering blog post, two newsroom posts, two SEC-filed shareholder documents. There is no published architecture, no benchmark, no external audit, and no independent technical coverage of ADP. The sub-100ms figure, the mode list and the maturity statements should be read as company descriptions rather than verified performance.
What DoorDash Labs has shipped
Drone partnerships
DoorDash says its partnership with Wing "was born out of DoorDash Labs" and that the Flytrex partnership "stems from DoorDash Labs," in both cases describing Labs as the company's robotics and automation arm.[19][20] The Wing relationship began in Australia in 2022, reached the United States in Christiansburg, Virginia on March 21, 2024 with Wendy's as first restaurant partner, and expanded to Charlotte, North Carolina on May 14, 2025.[18][19] The Flytrex partnership launched in Little Elm and Frisco, Texas on June 26, 2025, and was Flytrex's first integration with a third-party app.[20] Harrison Shih is the DoorDash executive quoted in all three announcements.[18][19][20]
Dot
Dot is a four-wheeled, road-capable electric delivery robot that DoorDash unveiled on September 30, 2025 and describes as developed entirely in-house at Labs.[6] Its published autonomy stack is the most detailed technical material DoorDash has released on any system: vision-primary perception with eight external cameras, four radars and three lidars being downgraded to cheap automotive-grade units for cost reasons; a planner combining deep learning for behavior prediction with search-based algorithms as a safety net; training via behavior cloning and reinforcement learning; and, in development, a foundation driving model intended to handle road, sidewalk and driveway contexts "all within a single inference pass."[5] See the Dot article for specifications, deployment markets and regulatory detail.
SmartScale
SmartScale, announced the same day as Dot, is merchant hardware rather than a vehicle, and it is the clearest example of Labs applying AI to the merchant handoff instead of to driving. DoorDash describes it as combining "precise weighing technology with intelligent predictive modeling to help ensure every order matches its expected contents."[7] Staff place a packed bag on the scale, the system compares measured weight against what the order should weigh, and discrepancies raise a real-time alert before the bag leaves the kitchen. The device is smaller than a cutting board.[7] DoorDash says SmartScale "has been shown to cut missing item claims by up to 30%," a company figure footnoted to internal data from August 2024 to April 2025 with no published methodology.[7]
Panera Bread was the first national restaurant to adopt it, across DoorDash orders, drive-thru and its own digital channels, with the two companies weighing and calibrating every menu item and training the system to recognize customizations. Panera reported 98% improved delivery accuracy in test cafes and a 42% reduction in guest-reported missing items; both figures are attributed to Panera and DoorDash, not independently measured.[7] DoorDash also frames SmartScale as drone enablement, since verified order weight is what lets a package qualify for an aircraft with a hard payload ceiling.[6][7]
DoorDash Air
On July 29, 2026 DoorDash announced that it had earned Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 air carrier certification and was launching DoorDash Air, its first-party drone program, "developed in-house at DoorDash Labs."[8] The announcement's own subheadline attributes the certificate to DoorDash Labs.[8] Harrison Shih, as Head of DoorDash Air, said: "We want drone delivery to work for any merchant, anywhere. We're building the full stack to make that possible from the ground infrastructure to the drone itself, and the handoff systems that make it work together seamlessly."[8] The aircraft itself was not disclosed. Comparison with other delivery autonomy efforts
DoorDash Labs is unusual less for what it builds than for who owns it. Most delivery marketplaces that entered autonomy either bought their way in, spun the effort out, or partnered and stopped there.

Two contrasts stand out. Uber, the closest structural analogue to DoorDash, divested its autonomy division at roughly the moment DoorDash was scaling its own up, and DoorDash's Head of Autonomy came from Zoox, which Amazon acquired in 2020.[10][27] Alphabet's approach, meanwhile, separates the autonomy company from the demand: Wing needs marketplace partners such as DoorDash to reach consumers. Tang's stated position is close to the inverse, that building the drone "is only part of the challenge" and that the marketplace and merchant handoff infrastructure are "even harder," which is the problem the Autonomous Delivery Platform is meant to solve.[5][9]
DoorDash Air also joins a short list. The FAA's own register of Part 135 package delivery operators, last updated July 21, 2026, names seven prior holders: Wing Aviation, UPS Flight Forward, Amazon Prime Air, Zipline, Causey Aviation Unmanned, DroneUp and Drone Express.[21] DoorDash's claim to be the eighth is consistent with that list, though the FAA page had not been updated to include DoorDash as of late July 2026.[21]
