AI Glasses in China

China is the second-largest national market for AI glasses after the United States, and by several measures the industry's manufacturing base. Omdia put mainland China at 10.9% of global AI-glasses shipments in 2025, "approaching one million units", and ranked the Chinese vendors Rokid second and Xiaomi third worldwide behind Meta; Chinese companies shipped 71% of the world's display-equipped AI glasses that year [1]. Since 1 January 2026 smart glasses have also been a named category in China's national consumer purchase-subsidy programme, worth up to 500 RMB off a qualifying pair [2]. What the market does not have is a single leader. Three research firms name three different number ones for China, and the disagreement is mostly about what each firm counts as a pair of glasses.

Currency conversions below use 1 USD = 6.76 RMB, the rate at the start of August 2026, and are rounded. Chinese sources are quoted in their original units, where 万 is 10,000 and 亿 is 100 million.

How big the market is, and according to whom

There is no agreed figure for how many AI glasses China absorbed in 2025. Published estimates span more than three times, and the spread is definitional rather than an argument about facts.

Two axes explain nearly all of it. The first is sell-in against sell-through: Omdia, IDC and Counterpoint count shipments into the channel, while RUNTO, CINNO and Wellsenn XR count retail sales out of it. The second is basket width. IDC's "smart glasses" is the widest, folding in audio-only frames with no camera as well as AR and VR headsets; its China total for the third quarter of 2025, 623,000 units, was 454,000 audio and audio-camera frames against 169,000 AR/VR units [8]. CINNO's consumer AI/AR basket excludes plain audio glasses, which is part of why its Q1 2026 China figure is almost exactly half RUNTO's for the same quarter even though the growth rates, 108% and 96%, sit close together. Only part: RUNTO counted 101,000 audio glasses in that quarter, so removing them from its 402,000 still leaves 301,000 against CINNO's 202,000, and the rest of the gap is other basket differences.

The outlier is iiMedia's. Its 3.286 million for China in 2025 is more than three times Omdia's and roughly a third above IDC's, it measures 销量 (sales) rather than shipments, and the version that reached print carried no basket definition or methodology at all. It nonetheless reached print in 中国经济周刊, a magazine in the People's Daily group, which carried it as the article's headline market data [5]. IDC's own numbers move as well: Goertek's 2025 annual report cites IDC for global AI smart glasses growing 241% in 2025 to "ten-million-unit scale" [9], against Omdia's 8.7 million and 322% for the same year [1]. Comparisons across the global AI glasses market only hold inside a single firm's series.

The ranking problem

Chinese and English coverage routinely calls one company or another China's number one in AI glasses. The claim is rarely wrong so much as unfinished, because the answer changes with the firm, the basket and the quarter.

Counterpoint's Q1 2026 release shows the trap. Its English text says RayNeo "maintained its dominance" of the birdbath and flat-prism segment "with a 41% share", names XREAL and VITURE as the other two firms concentrated there, and says Rokid "ranked first globally" in waveguide-based AR with its Rokid Glasses. The text gives no percentage for Rokid, and the only waveguide shares it names are Meta 38%, Even Realities 9% and Alibaba 5%; the release's chart adds Rokid 41% and INMO 2% [11]. The widely repeated "Rokid 41%" is read off that chart rather than quoted from the text, and so are the China vendor percentages in the first row above, which Counterpoint published in a separate chart headed "Smart Glasses OEM Shipments Share by Country" and has since removed from the live page along with a sentence naming Xiaomi and Alibaba as China's leaders. Both survive in an archive capture taken on the morning of 25 June 2026, a couple of hours before the page was edited, and IT之家 reported them the same day [41][10]. The structural finding in that release is more durable than any share: across global AR glasses, birdbath and flat-prism optics fell from 82% of shipments in Q1 2025 to 58% in Q1 2026 while waveguide rose from 18% to 42% [11].

Definitions cut across single vendors too. CINNO counts Rokid's co-branded BOLON AI glasses, fifth in China by model-level sales in Q1 2026, separately from Rokid's own 20%, which is why the same release can also place Xiaomi fifth on brand share with 7% [7], and Counterpoint's China chart lists Rokid BOLON on its own at 3%, fourth behind Xiaomi, Alibaba and Li Auto [41]. BOLON is not a Chinese-owned brand: EssilorLuxottica lists it among its house eyewear brands and says it "has been part of the Group's eyewear portfolio since the acquisition of Xiamen Yarui Optical in 2013" [43].

The vendor landscape

Almost every large Chinese consumer-technology company now sells or has announced glasses. The product states differ sharply, and several widely cited launches never became products.

Xiaomi set the price floor. Its first AI glasses launched on 26 June 2025 at 1,999 RMB, weighing 40 g, with a 12-megapixel first-person camera, the Super XiaoAi assistant and camera-based payment; electrochromic and coloured-lens versions cost 2,699 and 2,999 RMB [13]. A TechWeb commentary carried on Tencent News in December 2025 said the glasses sold 80,000 units in their first half-month, without saying where that figure came from, and no independent source for it has surfaced [14].

Alibaba came in five months later and at the top of the range. The Quark AI Glasses S1, pre-sold on Tmall from 24 October 2025 [44] and launched in full on 27 November, is a waveguide device on a Snapdragon AR1 plus Bestechnic BES2800 dual-chip design with a swappable battery and a claimed seven-hour runtime [15]. Less than a month later Alibaba added the display-free G1 at 1,999 RMB, sold through Tmall, Douyin and JD.com, with a rollout to 604 physical stores in 82 cities to follow [16]. The line was later consolidated under a unified Qwen brand, the same name Alibaba uses for the Tongyi Qianwen assistant [11], and Wellsenn XR's tracking put Qwen glasses at 53% of China's online AI-glasses sales between 8 March and 20 April 2026 [12].

Rokid, RayNeo and XREAL are the specialists. Rokid Glasses were announced on 18 November 2024 at 2,499 RMB and 49 g, on a Snapdragon AR1 platform and initially with Alibaba's Qwen models [36]; later firmware made DeepSeek, Doubao and others selectable, and the first mass-production unit came off a Lens Technology line in Xiangtan on 24 June 2025 against a claimed 250,000 global pre-orders [17]. RayNeo, known in Chinese as 雷鸟创新, raised a large round in January 2026 that the press and the company describe differently. 新京报 reported on 5 January 2026 that the company had closed more than 1 billion RMB, led by China Mobile's chain-leader fund and CITIC Goldstone with China Unicom's Lianchuang Innovation Fund among the participants, and relayed RayNeo's claim that this was the first strategic investment in smart glasses by domestic telecom operators [18]. RayNeo's own account, published on 1 April 2026, names no single lead: it describes an investment group including CITIC Goldstone plus strategic funds from both China Mobile and China Unicom, and puts the round at more than $140 million [52]. XREAL is the odd one out: its One Pro and 1S are tethered display viewers for watching and working rather than assistant glasses, yet analysts count them in the same tables, which is part of why the tables disagree [7].

Among the rest, Huawei is the notable 2026 entrant: its first AI glasses went on sale on 25 April 2026 at 2,499 RMB, weighing 35.5 g, on an in-house chip whose part number Huawei has not disclosed [19]. Baidu is a cautionary case: it unveiled Xiaodu AI glasses in November 2024 promising a first-half-2025 launch [47], and the Pro that went on sale on 10 November 2025 arrived a year after that unveiling [20]. Li Auto's Livis, 36 g with Zeiss lenses and car controls, is the clearest carmaker crossover [21]. Two names that recur in Chinese coverage of the category are not selling glasses at all. vivo's only head-worn product is the 398 g vivo Vision mixed-reality headset, whose product page carries no price and offers a demonstration booking rather than a purchase [38]. ByteDance's Doubao glasses have never been announced by the company; TechNode reported in March 2026, citing supply-chain sources relayed by Blue Whale Tech, that the first generation was unlikely to reach the market because it was not seen as sufficiently different from what was already on sale, even though Qualcomm AR1 chips had been procured [39].

The "hundred glasses war"

百镜大战, literally the war of a hundred glasses, is the standard Chinese-media shorthand for the 2025-26 entry rush. It is a journalistic coinage rather than an analyst category, and Chinese outlets say so: a December 2025 TechWeb piece carried on Tencent News called it what the industry 戏称, or jokingly calls, the moment [14]. The phrase was already in state-media use by then. 人民邮电报, republished by 新华网 on 3 April 2025, ran the headline "百镜大战打响" and dated the surge to the 40-plus AI glasses shown at that year's CES [48]. 中国经济周刊 used it as established shorthand in a page-three feature in its 15 January 2026 issue, headlined "waiting for a hit", listing Baidu, Li Auto, Alibaba and Lenovo as late-2025 entrants on top of Huawei, Xiaomi and ByteDance, plus Meta, Google, RayNeo and INMO [5].

The vendor counts attached to the term are soft. The most-repeated figure, 36 vendors and more than 50 products, comes from an August 2025 piece by 大象新闻 that sources it only to "according to statistics", with no firm named, and that already asked whether the boom was 虚火, false heat [22].

By mid-2026 Chinese business media had begun arguing that the war never happened. A 智械岛 piece published on Huxiu covering the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference ran under the headline "AI glasses are still waiting for the hundred glasses war". A Shenzhen contract manufacturer quoted in it says roughly 80% of shipping products are near-identical inside, and the reporter adds that they differ only in exterior design and software tuning; the same operator puts the shortest path from project start to volume production at a month and a half. RayNeo's chief executive Li Hongwei told a launch event that long-term use of the 200-plus advertised AI features runs below 6% [23]. RUNTO made the same complaint from the data side, saying the 百镜大战 had produced uneven product quality, weak feature utility and missing must-have use cases [6]. The term is best read as media framing of a real entry wave, not as an event with a start date.

Government policy

Policy support for AI glasses in China is real, specific and narrower than it is usually described. It consists of a consumer subsidy line item, an industry privacy code and municipal industrial plans. It does not include a national industrial programme.

The subsidy matters most. Under 商办流通函2025年第469号, issued on 31 December 2025 by the general offices of the Ministry of Commerce and four other central bodies, purchases from 1 January 2026 of "mobile phones, tablets, smart watches (bands) and smart glasses" priced at or below 6,000 RMB ($890) per item receive 15% of the final sale price after all other discounts, capped at 500 RMB ($74) per item, one item per category per person [2]. Smart glasses were the only newly added category for 2026: the 2025 round of the same programme ran on identical parameters, the same 6,000 RMB ceiling, the same 15% and the same 500 RMB cap, but covered only phones, tablets and smart watches or bands [42]. RUNTO credits the subsidy directly for the 96% retail growth it measured in the first quarter [6], and Rest of World found the 15% and the 500 RMB cap being applied to AI glasses in China in March 2026 [4]. Dates matter here, because a subsidised price quoted before 2026 cannot have come from this document: IT之家 listed Li Auto's 1,999 RMB Livis at 1,699 RMB after 国补 on 3 December 2025 [21], four weeks before smart glasses were in the national scheme at all [42]. The document names 智能眼镜, smart glasses, and not AR glasses, so trade coverage claiming AR glasses were specifically added is loose paraphrase.

The privacy instrument is voluntary. The 《AI眼镜可信视界自律公约》, a trustworthy-vision self-discipline pact for AI glasses, was released on 17 June 2026 at an AI glasses ecosystem conference in Shenzhen. It was drafted by the Tael Terminal Laboratory of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology with the Shenzhen AI Glasses Industry Alliance, under guidance from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and signed by RayNeo, Luxshare, Rokid, Qwen, INMO and ZTE among others [24]. Signatories commit to a minimum-necessary collection principle, visible indicators and consent before camera or microphone capture, local processing of biometric data in principle, notification of regulators within 72 hours of confirming a major security incident that may affect user privacy and of affected users within seven days, and at least five years of security updates [24]. The South China Morning Post reported that the code followed public anger over covert filming, after videos on Rokid's own user forum showed members of the public recorded on subway trains, in parks, on beaches and in shopping malls, including a flight attendant serving passengers; Rokid removed some of the videos and blocked the accounts responsible [25]. Municipal plans supply the industrial policy. Beijing's economy and information technology bureau issued 京经信发〔2026〕20号, dated 1 April 2026 and published two days later, a 2026 to 2030 action plan whose single quantitative target is a smart-glasses industry above 40 billion RMB (产业规模突破400亿元, $5.9B) by 2030, supported by coordination across device, operating system, model, chip, display and optics [26]. Shenzhen's Bao'an district issued a 2025 to 2027 plan targeting more than 100 supply-chain companies by 2027 and naming waveguide plates and micro display modules as the components it wants to strengthen; the plan's contents are known here from a January 2026 深圳特区报 report carried on the Shenzhen development and reform commission's site rather than from the text of the plan itself [27]. Shenzhen's Longgang district issued revised measures effective 3 August 2026 offering up to 20 million RMB ($3.0M) per company per year for technical retrofitting, up to 2 million RMB per public service platform project, up to 5 million RMB per major exhibition, and smaller sums for production-line upgrades and application projects; the district runs industry funds totalling more than 48 billion RMB and has committed to at least 10.5 billion RMB of technology procurement orders over three years [28].

The negative finding matters as much as the positive ones. AI glasses are absent from China's 15th Five-Year Plan outline, whose named future industries are quantum technology, biomanufacturing, hydrogen and fusion energy, brain-computer interfaces, embodied intelligence and 6G; the terms 眼镜, 可穿戴, 智能穿戴, XR, 虚拟现实, 增强现实, 元宇宙 and 空间计算 appear nowhere in its 62 chapters, and nowhere in the 23 boxed panels and three maps that the outline publishes as images rather than as searchable text [29]. They are equally absent from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's 2026 to 2028 implementation opinions on "AI plus information and communications", dated 3 June 2026 and published on 11 June, which reach the category only through a single generic call to develop "AI phones and computers, smart home devices and smart wearables" [30]. Whatever Chinese AI policy is doing for glasses, it is doing at the consumer-subsidy and municipal level rather than as a national pillar.

The supply chain

China assembles the world's AI glasses without controlling all of their hardest components.

Goertek (歌尔股份, 002241.SZ) is the dominant assembler. Chinese trade coverage puts its global share of AI-glasses contract manufacturing above 60% and forecasts related 2026 revenue above 20 billion RMB ($3.0B), but states the share as bare fact and attributes the forecast only to unnamed institutions [40]. Goertek's own audited 2025 annual report describes serving leading customers through ODM and JDM models and claims a leading market position in AI smart glasses, and publishes no market-share figure at all, so neither the 60% nor the forecast originates with the company. The filing does show scale and strain together: revenue of 96.55 billion RMB ($14.3B), down 4.36% year on year, net profit attributable to shareholders of 3.94 billion RMB (~$583M), up 47.85%, and R&D spending of 5.03 billion RMB. The profit rise is not operating strength. Profit excluding non-recurring items fell 38.17% to 1.48 billion RMB, and non-recurring gains of 2.46 billion RMB were mostly a 2.14 billion RMB revaluation booked when Goertek Optics left the consolidation. The smart-hardware segment that contains AI glasses fell 6.00% to 53.77 billion RMB even as Goertek describes AI glasses revenue growing sharply; the filing blames product life cycle and iteration timing on particular acoustic and smart-hardware projects, and names nothing more specific. Domestic revenue rose 26.39% to 11.85 billion RMB [9]. Goertek restructured Goertek Optics during the year, cutting its stake from 56.66% to 38.57% while staying the largest shareholder and moving the company to associate status [9], and in January 2026 Goertek Optics agreed to form a joint venture with a Conant Optical subsidiary for AR, VR and smart-glasses lenses [40]. Lens Technology (蓝思科技) is the other named assembler of note, having built the line that produced the first mass-production Rokid Glasses [17].

Micro-display is the strongest domestic position. JBD (上海显耀显示科技), founded in Shanghai in 2015, closed a B2 round of more than 1 billion RMB (~$148M) on 27 October 2025, which it called the largest single financing in global microLED micro-display, led by Chaos Investment and CITIC Jinshi. The company says its microLED products are designed into close to 50 smart glasses models worldwide, and has shipped a colour light engine, Hummingbird II, at 0.2 cubic centimetres and 0.5 grams, plus a 2.5-micrometre pixel-pitch platform called Roadrunner [31]. It discloses no capacity or customer shipment figures.

Waveguides are the weak point. Chinese devices do ship them, though the suppliers usually go unnamed: Lenovo's V1 uses a resin diffractive waveguide at up to 2,000 nits [32] and Alibaba's S1 a waveguide at 4,000 nits peak [15], while Bao'an's district plan lists waveguide plates among the components it wants local firms to master [27]. The most visible display glasses in the world use none of the Chinese ones. TrendForce's supply-chain survey of Meta's Ray-Ban Display found the array waveguide coming from Lumus, with orders revised up from about 80,000 to about 150,000 units within six months of launch, key waveguide optical components from SCHOTT, the LCoS panel from OmniVision and light-engine assembly from Goertek Optics [33]. Even that is not a clean foreign-supplier story: OmniVision has been a subsidiary of Shanghai-listed Will Semiconductor since 2019 and runs its manufacturing and test site in Shanghai [49]. TrendForce forecasts 950,000 AR-glasses units globally in 2026, rising to 32.11 million by 2030 [33].

Silicon is split, with China's semiconductor industry supplying the companion parts rather than the main applications processor. Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 appears in Alibaba's, Meizu's and Rokid's glasses, paired in Alibaba's case with Bestechnic's BES2800 in a dual-chip design [15][36][37]. Bestechnic and UNISOC, whose W337 powers INMO's GO3, are both Chinese [34]. Huawei goes further, with an in-house part it has not named [19]. No Chinese export control specific to AI glasses exists: none of 眼镜, 可穿戴, 增强现实, 虚拟现实, 光波导, 微显示, 近眼, LCoS or MicroLED appears anywhere in the consolidated dual-use export control list in force since 1 December 2024, a document in which 出口管制 appears 39 times and 激光 44 [50]. The dependency in this segment runs inbound, on foreign systems-on-chip and waveguides, rather than outbound. The reverse direction is covered at export controls.

Underneath all of it sits an eyewear cluster that predates AI by decades. A 深圳特区报 feature of 19 May 2025, republished on the Shenzhen municipal government portal, puts about 1,200 eyewear companies in the Hengang subdistrict of Longgang, inside less than 50 square kilometres, producing more than 125 million pairs of mid-to-high-end glasses a year and holding 55% of that global segment, with Longgang's 2024 eyewear output value at 4.3 billion RMB (43亿元, ~$640M); the same piece credits Goldman Sachs, naming neither a report nor a date, with a projection that Shenzhen would supply more than 70% of global AI-glasses hardware manufacturing capacity [35]. 21世纪经济报道 counted close to 1,000 eyewear manufacturers in Longgang in July 2026, along with 90% of China's high-end eyewear designers [28]. The 智械岛 piece on Huxiu puts more than 80% of global AI-glasses manufacturing in China [23].

Reception, returns and open problems

The demand side is weaker than the shipment charts imply. RUNTO reported industry return rates of 30% to 70% in the first quarter of 2026, far above mature consumer-electronics norms, and blamed gimmicky features and uncomfortable fit in a market still running on novelty purchases [6]. The 智械岛 piece on Huxiu reported 30% to 40% on JD.com and Tmall, reaching 50% on Douyin [23], and 大象新闻 cited the trade outlet VR Vision at 40% to 50% on Douyin [22].

Prices have fallen with the disappointment. JD.com's half-year data showed the average selling price of smart glasses dropping from above 2,000 RMB to around 1,500 RMB across the first half of 2025 [5]. 中国经济周刊's reviewers, testing Quark, Xiaomi and Rokid products, concluded the category was usable but not good, with photo quality unsatisfying next to phones and with AI and translation functions that regularly failed [5].

Two secondary markets show what the glasses are actually used for. Rest of World documented a rental trade on the resale platform Xianyu at 40 to 80 RMB per day (~$6 to $12), including one Shenzhen operator who rented Rokid and Quark glasses to more than 1,000 customers over four months for travel translation, business interpreting and teleprompting [4]. It also documented exam cheating. Smart glasses are explicitly banned from the national college entrance examination and civil-service examinations, but students report that teachers rarely recognise them in ordinary school tests, and researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology paired Rokid glasses with ChatGPT 5.2 in a test where the wearer placed in the top five of a class of more than 100 [4]. The same reporting records the ordinary complaints that recur everywhere: weights of up to 50 grams, twice a normal pair, heat in summer, and batteries that run down within a few hours and go back in the charging case in the middle of the day.
