AI glasses are eyeglasses that carry a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers and an AI assistant, and in most cases no display at all. The wearer speaks to the frame, the frame can see roughly what the wearer sees, and the answer comes back as audio. Omdia, which tracks the category under exactly that name, defines them as "head-worn devices that incorporate on-device and/or cloud-based LLMs to deliver contextual information and assistance," using "a multimodal interface, typically voice and vision, to interpret the user's surroundings" [2]. Meta uses the same term for its own products, which is why it is the title here. Other vendors and research firms call overlapping but different sets of devices "smart glasses," "intelligent eyewear," "audio glasses" or "AR glasses," and the labels have moved since 2024.

The category exists in its present form because of one product line. Ray-Ban Stories, the 2021 Facebook and Luxottica camera glasses, launched at $299 [13]; internal Meta documents later reported by the Wall Street Journal put sales at about 300,000 units through February 2023, regular use at fewer than 10% of buyers, and the return rate at roughly 13% [29]. Its 2023 successor, Ray-Ban Meta, kept a similar shape, moved to a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, and over the following eighteen months gained an assistant that could answer questions about what the camera was pointed at [6]. That worked. EssilorLuxottica, which builds the frames and owns many of the shops they are sold in, told investors it moved more than 7 million Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta units during calendar 2025 [22].

The honest scale is a category of roughly nine million units a year, dominated by one company, in which almost nobody makes money and fewer than one device in ten has a screen. Omdia put 2025 global shipments at 8.7 million, up 322%, with Meta at 85.2% on 7.4 million units and display-equipped models at 8.4% of the total, or 730,000 units [1]. IDC, counting a wider basket, forecasts 13.6 million display-less smart glasses against 3.0 million optical see-through display glasses for 2026 [3]. XREAL, ranked first in AR eyewear by revenue in the research it commissioned for its own listing document, shipped fewer pairs in 2025 than in 2023 and lost money on every one [24]. And despite persistent reporting to the contrary, face recognition has not shipped on any major vendor's glasses; the closest thing to it was dormant code found inside Meta's companion app in June 2026 and removed the next day [40].

Terminology

Four device classes are routinely mixed together, and they behave differently enough that the distinction matters before any number can be read.

"Smart glasses" is the older and wider term. It predates language models and covers everything above plus purely audio frames; most analyst trackers still use it. "AI glasses" is the narrower term for devices running an assistant, which is why Omdia's 8.7 million for 2025 and the 14.8 million IDC gave for the same year are not in conflict: they are counting different baskets, not disagreeing about factories [1][52]. Vendors have also renamed their own categories mid-flight, which makes quoting them across time hazardous. Meta's taxonomy, set out when it launched Meta Ray-Ban Display on 2025-09-17, has three tiers: "Camera AI glasses," "Display AI glasses" and "Augmented reality glasses: AR glasses, like our Orion prototype" [4]. Google used almost the same words for different things and then changed them. Its Android XR platform originally called screen-free devices "AI glasses" and in-lens ones "display AI glasses"; with Developer Preview 4 on 2026-05-19 it wrote that "we are adopting more descriptive naming for our form factors, where AI glasses are now audio glasses and display AI glasses are now display glasses, with these changes appearing in our documentation starting today" [5]. Google's "AI glasses" before May 2026 therefore meant a device with no camera and no screen, while Meta's "AI glasses" has always meant the opposite. A quotation from either company needs its date attached.

How they work

The interaction loop is short and almost unchanged across vendors. A wake phrase, a temple tap or a physical button opens a session. A microphone array, five elements in the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta, isolates the wearer's voice from wind and background noise [6]. If the request needs vision, the camera grabs a frame or a short stream. A model interprets both, and the answer is spoken through speakers aimed at the ear rather than into it, so the wearer still hears the room. Capture, calls, messages, music and machine translation all run through the same path.

On-device or cloud

Vendors talk up the on-device part. The honest answer is that the split is hybrid and mostly undisclosed. Qualcomm's product brief for Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, the chip in nearly every camera-equipped pair on sale, names the workloads that run inside the frame: wake-word detection and always-on audio on a separate sensing-hub micro NPU, microphone-array processing and noise cancellation, image and audio enhancement, and computer vision tasks such as face and facial-landmark detection [18]. Its main NPU supports INT4 and INT8 only, so the practical ceiling on model size is set by quantization as much as by throughput [18]. Qualcomm's one fully on-glass generative demonstration, at Augmented World Expo in June 2025, ran a 1-billion-parameter Llama model on prototype hardware, and the same post states the company's actual position as "cloud computing, on-device or a hybrid path that incorporates both" [19].

Meta has published nothing about where its assistant runs. It has never said which large language model serves a request from the glasses, nor how the work divides between frame, phone and server [6]. Two observable facts bound the answer. Live translation works offline once a language pack has been downloaded, so that path is local [7]. Conversation Focus, which amplifies the voice of a person in front of the wearer, also runs locally, which is why placing it behind a subscription in mid-2026 drew an unusually sharp reaction [30]. Almost everything else appears to need connectivity. Treat any "runs on your face" claim as covering the wake word and the audio pipeline unless the vendor says otherwise.

Why most of them have no screen

Adding a display means adding a projector, an optical combiner and the power budget to drive them, inside something that must stay under about 70 grams and still look like eyewear. The mainstream solution is a waveguide display: a projector in the temple injects light into a thin transparent plate, the light travels sideways by total internal reflection, and a grating or a stack of partial mirrors steers it back out toward the pupil. Every stage loses light. For Orion, Meta put the microLED source at hundreds of thousands of nits and the light reaching the eye at 300 to 400 [26]. iFixit, tearing down Meta Ray-Ban Display, concluded that the glass rather than the electronics is what makes the product notable, and that no optician will be replacing a cracked lens [25].

The economics follow from the physics, and the result is visible in the shipment data. Display-equipped devices were 8.4% of AI glasses in 2025, up from 3.3% in 2024 [1]. Vendors that skip the display can build a $299 product on a chip announced in 2023. Vendors that include one are selling $700 to $2,200 devices into a segment that came to 730,000 units in all of 2025 [1].

Input beyond voice

Voice is awkward in public and useless in a quiet room. Camera glasses fall back on a temple touchpad and a button. Meta's answer for display glasses is the Meta Neural Band, a wrist-worn surface electromyography sensor bundled with Meta Ray-Ban Display, which reads electrical activity in the forearm and converts pinches, swipes and traced letters into commands without the hand needing to be visible to any camera [4][48]. Samsung's approach on Android XR is different again: its own footnote says gesture interactions on its coming eyewear are "only provided through Watch9" [16].

Google Glass is the reference failure, and its causes were specific rather than atmospheric. It cost $1,500 [49]. It had no dedicated capture indicator, which the Guardian's reviewer flagged in 2013 as "a potential privacy concern, and very different from the situation that has pertained ever since mobile phones became camera phones" [32]. Its menu was a fixed list of seven functions, none of which involved asking about what the wearer was looking at [32]. And the Explorer Program put an unfinished prototype in front of the public as though it were a product. Google stopped selling the enterprise version on 2023-03-15 and ended support on 2023-09-15 [34].

Snap's first Spectacles failed commercially rather than socially: the GBP 129 camera sunglasses left Snap declaring $40 million of losses in 2017 on excess inventory and cancelled orders [50]. Ray-Ban Stories failed for duller reasons: connectivity problems, battery life, and difficulty getting captured media off the device [29]. What changed between 2021 and 2023 was not the hardware, which barely moved, but the arrival of a multimodal assistant worth talking to and a distribution channel that put the product in optical shops rather than gadget stores. Both Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap, the well-funded augmented reality programmes of the same decade, went the other way and added optics and compute at the cost of size. Neither became a consumer product, and Magic Leap has since become a waveguide supplier.

The current landscape

Announced is not shipping, and in this category the gap is unusually wide. Every row states the position as of 2026-08-02.

Four things are worth pulling out of that table. Meta's is the only lineup covering every price point from $299 to $799, and its display product is the only shipping pair of display glasses from a Western vendor, sold in a single country. Google builds no hardware at all: it supplies Android XR, the Gemini assistant and, for Warby Parker, development funding, while Samsung and the eyewear brands carry the inventory risk, and Qualcomm confirmed on 2026-07-22 that the silicon is the same Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 announced in 2023 [17]. Chinese vendors, largely absent from the American conversation, took second and third place worldwide in 2025 (Rokid and Xiaomi) and shipped 71% of the world's display-equipped units [1]; the Chinese market and supply chain are covered separately. And the specialists who built this technology first, XREAL, Vuzix, Even Realities and Brilliant Labs, are collectively a rounding error against Meta's volume.

The market

The defining feature of the data is that no two research firms count the same devices, so no single number for the size of this market exists. Reading any figure requires knowing four things: the firm, exactly what its category includes, whether it measures shipments into the channel or sales out of it, and the period.

Meta's share sits anywhere between 69.2% and 85.2% depending on the denominator, and none of those figures contradicts the others: Omdia's 85.2% counts only devices carrying an assistant, while IDC's 69.2% for the first quarter of 2026 divides by a basket drawn from its wearables and AR/VR headset trackers together, virtual reality headsets included [1][3]. Forecasts are basket-dependent in the same way. Omdia expects more than 15 million AI glasses in 2026, having raised that from more than 10 million six months earlier [1][2]. IDC separately projects 13.6 million display-less units in 2026 at an average selling price of $376, falling to about $229 by 2030, alongside 3.0 million optical see-through units at $516 to $547 [3]. A market size quoted without a firm and a basket attached is an artifact.

Units are also not profits. EssilorLuxottica, the one participant with audited disclosure at scale, named AI glasses alongside US tariffs as a drag on its 16.0% adjusted operating margin for 2025, stated at constant exchange rates, in the same year the line added more than 7 million units [22]. For the first half of 2026 it reported AI glasses revenue almost doubling in the second quarter and an adjusted operating margin of 18.6% as reported, 18.9% at constant rates: a different period on a different basis rather than a before and after [23]. XREAL's Hong Kong listing application put 2025 revenue at RMB 516 million on 133,731 pairs sold, against 137,239 pairs in 2023: the growth was entirely in price and mix rather than volume, and the company still booked an IFRS loss of RMB 456 million for the year [24].

Privacy and law

The problem camera glasses create is consent rather than data security, and it falls on people who never bought the product. The Irish Data Protection Commission described it precisely in 2021: with a phone, "it is generally the case that the camera or the phone is visible as the device by which recording is happening, thereby putting those captured in the recordings on notice" [35]. Glasses remove that signal. This is why a component costing a few cents, the capture indicator LED, has absorbed most of the regulatory attention.

Meta's operative statement is a newsroom post of 2026-07-07: "The capture LED has no off switch," and from the second generation onward "the camera is automatically disabled if we detect that the capture LED has been blocked" [12]. That safeguard has been defeated in public. On 2026-07-31 Engadget reported that a notched sticker costing about two dollars hid the light from bystanders while admitting enough peripheral light for the sensor to read it as unobstructed; Meta said it was "exploring ways to strengthen our ability to detect such tampering" [36].

Thirteen putative class actions filed in March 2026 were consolidated in the Northern District of California as In re Meta AI Glasses Litigation, master file 3:26-cv-01897-EMC, before Judge Edward M. Chen, naming Meta Platforms and Luxottica of America, with seven member cases also naming the annotation contractor Sama [37]. The plaintiffs allege that Meta marketed the glasses as designed for privacy while routing captured audio and video to human reviewers in Nairobi, and that the advertised face blurring did not reliably work. Every one of those is an allegation. As of 2026-08-02 the consolidated complaint had not been filed, no defendant had answered or moved to dismiss, no class had been certified, and no court had ruled on the merits [37]. Separately, the Texas attorney general issued a civil investigative demand to Meta on 2026-05-20, which is an investigation and not a suit [38], and on 2026-07-20 the New York State court system barred camera and microphone eyewear from every state courthouse, the first US state to do so [39].

Facial recognition is where reporting and product diverge most sharply. WIRED found a dormant face-recognition pipeline inside Meta's companion app on 2026-06-04; Meta shipped an update removing nearly all of it the following day, after its communications vice-president had said the feature did not exist and its chief technology officer had called the reporting misleading [40]. Nothing shipped, and nothing has shipped since. Fuller treatment of the regulators, the EU AI Act provisions that actually bite, the institutional bans and the thin published vulnerability record is at smart glasses and privacy.

What is hard

Battery. Vendor figures are measured under mixed-use scripts, and independent testing lands well below them. Meta claims over eight hours for Meta Glasses; Engadget measured "closer to four and a half hours on a charge" with steady music playback [41]. Meta rates Oakley Meta Vanguard at up to nine hours; DC Rainmaker called that "pretty darn optimistic" and got roughly ninety minutes when shooting a lot of 3K video [42]. Meta Ray-Ban Display, which has a screen to feed, is rated by Meta at up to six hours of mixed use, with the charging case bringing the total to 30 hours [4].

Brightness at the eye versus at the source. These are different planes and differ by three orders of magnitude. Orion's projectors emit hundreds of thousands of nits; 300 to 400 reach the wearer, which Road to VR judged well short of the roughly 3,000 nits comfortable outdoor use would need [26]. Meta Ray-Ban Display reaches a claimed 5,000 nits at the eye, over a 20 degree field of view, using a reflective mirror-stack waveguide rather than a diffractive one [25][48].

Weight and field of view, which trade against each other. Meta Ray-Ban Display weighs 69 grams and shows 20 degrees diagonally [48]. Orion weighs 98 grams and shows about 70 degrees, using silicon carbide lenses whose production Meta describes as complex and expensive; Meta told The Verge that its consumer AR device, codenamed Artemis, will use glass instead, which on that reporting leaves it without Orion's field of view [26][27]. Snap Specs claim 51 degrees at 132 to 136 grams and have not shipped [20]. Widening the view spreads the same light and the same pixels over a larger angle, so brightness and angular resolution both fall: Orion runs at about 13 pixels per degree against 42 for Meta Ray-Ban Display [26][48].

Thermal and power headroom. There is nowhere in a glasses temple to put a heatsink. That is why the always-on tier runs on a low-power sensing co-processor rather than the main NPU, and why the application processor in almost every shipping pair is still a part announced in 2023 rather than a faster one [18].

The economics. XREAL, first in AR eyewear by revenue on its own commissioned research, shipped 133,731 pairs in 2025, fewer than the 137,239 it shipped in 2023, on RMB 516 million of revenue and an IFRS loss of RMB 456 million [24]. EssilorLuxottica's AI glasses business dilutes group margin even while growing fast [22]. The one company plausibly making money here has not said so: Meta has never published a unit figure or a margin for any pair of glasses, and every number in circulation is an analyst estimate or EssilorLuxottica's aggregate.

Outlook

One date is fixed and two windows are stated. Snap will hold a Specs launch event on 2026-09-16 in Los Angeles, where Evan Spiegel is to give "the first in-depth look at SPECS" [21]. Google said in May 2026 that the eyewear Samsung is building with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker is coming this autumn; Samsung's own launch release of 2026-07-22 gives it no name, no price and no date [15][16]. XREAL states the same window for Aura [44].

Two things are explicitly not committed. Meta says it is still working on a consumer version of Orion, but its chief technology officer has ruled out the name, telling an audience in September 2024 that it "won't be Orion, because Orion is this particular prototype" [28], and Meta has published no price or date; the company told The Verge that the first consumer device will use glass rather than silicon carbide, which the reporting reads as a narrower field of view than the prototype [27]. Qualcomm, whose AR1 Gen 1 powers nearly every camera-equipped pair sold since 2023, has announced no successor for the class; the one revision it did announce, AR1+ Gen 1, was announced without a named customer and still has no identified shipping product [53]. Apple has announced nothing at all, and the WWDC 2027 timing that circulates is Bloomberg's reporting rather than a company statement [31].

The unresolved question is not whether the hardware improves. It is whether an assistant that answers questions about the world in front of you is worth wearing a camera on your face for, and that argument is now being had in courtrooms, courthouses and app stores rather than in reviews.
