Not to be confused with Gemini Ultra, a Google model.

Claude Ultra is the most expensive individual subscription plan for Claude, the AI assistant developed by Anthropic. It costs $200 a month and, as of October 31, 2026, gives ten times the weekly usage of the $20 Claude Pro plan, with no five-hour session limit for accounts that Anthropic has verified. [1][2] The plan launched on April 9, 2025 as the $200 tier of Claude Max, which Anthropic advertised as giving "20x more usage than Pro," and it was sold under the name Max 20x until October 30, 2026, when Anthropic renamed it Ultra and renamed the $100 Max 5x tier simply Max. Prices did not change. [3][4]

Ultra includes everything in Max, including Claude Code, Anthropic's Fable models for up to half of the weekly limit, priority access at high-traffic times, and $200 a month in credits for building on the Claude API. [1][5] On the day of the rename, Mike Overell, who leads product for Claude subscriptions, said the "20x" in the old name had referred to the five-hour limit, and that the weekly limit, added in August 2025, had been set at 10 times Pro. [6][7] What the "5x" and "20x" labels promised is the subject of a proposed class action, Kahn v. Anthropic PBC, which Anthropic has moved to dismiss; the court docket lists an order on that motion dated October 30, 2026. [8][9][41]

Plan terms

The table summarizes Ultra's terms as published by Anthropic on October 31, 2026. Usage is expressed as a multiple of the Pro allowance. Anthropic says there is no fixed message count, and that how quickly a limit is reached depends on the model, the length of chats and the size of files. [1]

Usage limits

Anthropic describes Ultra as including "10 times the Pro plan's usage every week." The plan has a weekly usage limit that applies across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. [2] Weekly limits reset at a fixed day and time assigned to each account, regardless of when the subscriber starts using Claude or when the subscription began, and the next reset time is shown in Settings > Usage. [12] Usage in claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all counts toward the same limits. [12] Like Anthropic's other plans, Ultra carries a reservation that the company may limit usage in other ways, "such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage," and Anthropic says it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. [2]

On Pro and Max, a session limit starts with the first message and resets in full five hours later. Verified Ultra accounts do not have this limit, which the help center frames as being able to "work at your own pace within your weekly limit." [12][13][2] In Settings > Usage, a verified Ultra account does not show a "Current session" bar. [2][14] Claude Code has a small, capped "wrap-up allowance" that, when a five-hour limit is reached mid-response, may let it keep working briefly to finish the step in progress; Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually and may not yet be available on every account; because verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit, it does not apply to them, while an Ultra account with a temporary limit gets it on the same terms as Max. [13]

Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 are a standard part of the plan. Subscribers can spend up to 50% of their weekly limits on Fable models at no extra cost; the models draw from the regular weekly limits and use them faster than other Claude models. The 50% figure is a ceiling within the weekly limit, not an addition to it. Once it is reached, a subscriber can keep using Fable with usage credits or switch to another model. [10]

Anthropic occasionally grants limit resets, which return a limit to full when the subscriber chooses to use one; they do not change the weekly reset day. [15] On Ultra a reset applies to the weekly limits, whereas on Max it can reset either the five-hour session limit or the weekly limits. [2][16]

Subscribers who reach the weekly limit or the Fable limit can wait for the reset or turn on usage credits, which switch further requests to pay-as-you-go billing at standard API rates. Usage credits are prepaid, can be capped with a monthly spending limit or topped up by auto-reload, and must be enabled on the web for subscriptions bought through the Claude mobile apps. [11] The monthly API credits included with Ultra cannot be used as usage credits in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork. [11][13]

Verified accounts

The removal of the five-hour limit applies only to verified accounts. Anthropic's help center says: "To help prevent fraud and abuse, we automatically verify Ultra accounts using factors like your account and payment history." Accounts that are not yet verified have a temporary limit, which Anthropic removes automatically once verification is complete, and verifying a phone number at checkout is a separate step that does not remove it. [2]

When it announced the change, Anthropic said it was removing the limit "starting today with most existing subscribers," that newer accounts would keep a temporary limit until verified, and that subscribers would get an email when the limit was removed. [4] Overell said the removal "rolls out in stages." [6] The New Stack reported that subscribers cannot request verification or speed it up. [17]

Monthly API credits

Ultra includes $200 a month in credits for the Claude Platform, which subscribers can use to build their own apps and agents with the Claude API. [5] Anthropic began rolling out monthly API credits for Max and Team plans on October 7, 2026, and the $200 tier, then called Max 20x, received $200 a month. [18][19]

The help center sets out these terms for the credit as of October 30, 2026: [5]

AspectTerms
EligibilityAn active subscription in good standing; new subscribers can claim after seven days on an eligible plan. Subscriptions bought on the web, iOS or Android qualify, but the claim is made on claude.ai in a web browser, and no payment method is needed on the Claude Platform.
How to claimThe subscriber links one Claude Console organization in Settings > Billing. Only one organization can be linked, each organization can receive credits from only one plan, and changing the link requires contacting support.
What they coverAny available Claude model on the Claude Platform, through the Messages API and Message Batches API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK.
What they do not coverInteractive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web; extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork; Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry.
ExpiryCredits refresh each billing cycle, do not roll over, and expire at the end of the cycle. They are spent before any purchased credits and are shared by everyone with an API key in the linked organization.
When they run outAPI requests stop until the next grant unless the organization has purchased credits or auto-reload; usage is never charged to the Claude plan.
Plan changesUpgrading from Max to Ultra gives prorated credits at once and $200 each cycle after that. Cancelling, downgrading to an ineligible plan or a refund stops new credits, while existing credits stay usable until they expire. Moving to a Team plan ends the link.

Expanded article table

Command-line runs with claude -p and Agent SDK runs are covered when they authenticate with an API key from the linked organization; when the user is signed in with the Claude plan instead, they draw from the plan's usage limits. Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the Claude desktop app count as Claude Code usage and are not covered. The help center distinguishes the credits from the Agent SDK credit Anthropic announced earlier in 2026, which it says is not available. [5]

Features and models

Ultra has the same feature set as Max on Anthropic's plan comparison table. Both include Claude Code, Claude for Chrome (listed as Claude in Chrome), Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, Claude Science, Research, Projects, memory, voice mode, task hand-off and scheduling, and the Claude Dashboards beta. Features reserved for business plans, such as Claude Tag, enterprise search, project sharing and single sign-on, are not included on any individual plan. [1] The help center also lists priority access to new models, features and products, and longer multi-step tasks, such as reports, spreadsheets and presentations, that Claude keeps working on in the background through Cowork. [2]

Claude Code is available in the terminal and in supported IDEs, including VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks, and JetBrains IDEs, using the same login and drawing from the same limits as the Claude apps. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that API key instead of the subscription. [13] Using Fable 5 in Claude Code requires version 2.1.170 or later, and Fable 5.1 requires 2.1.255 or later. [10]

The plan includes Anthropic's Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable models, with a context window of up to 1 million tokens depending on the model. [1] The help center says the newest models on paid plans support up to 1 million tokens, while others support 500,000 or 200,000. [12] Anthropic made Claude Opus 5.5 the default model for paid plans when it launched on September 22, 2026. [20] The comparison table lists model training as opt-out on Ultra, as on Anthropic's other individual plans. [1]

Billing and plan changes

Ultra is billed monthly. Anthropic's terms for moving between plans, as of October 31, 2026: [2][16][1]

  • Upgrading from Max. The account is charged pro rata for the rest of the billing cycle, and the upgrade takes effect immediately, with unused time on the old plan credited toward the new one. [16][1]
  • Moving from an annual Pro plan. If the remaining balance on the annual Pro plan is greater than the Ultra price, the account is credited with the remaining balance, which is applied to future subscription costs; the billing address must match the earlier subscription's. [2]
  • Google Play. Subscribers who upgrade through Google Play are charged the full price of the new plan, and the unused value of the old plan is converted into extra days. [2]
  • Downgrading and cancelling. Downgrades take effect at the end of the billing period. A cancelled Ultra subscription stays active until the period ends and then moves to the Free plan; Anthropic advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the renewal date. [1]

Anthropic says it does not offer standard discounted pricing for its individual plans, including Ultra, though it occasionally runs limited-time promotions. [16]

Source: Anthropic's pricing page and help center, October 31, 2026. For Team premium seats Anthropic gives a single multiple, five times a standard seat, rather than separate five-hour and weekly figures. [1][5] Team plans are covered in Claude for Enterprise and Teams.

Ultra costs twice as much as Max. Max gives five times Pro's usage on both the five-hour and weekly limits, while Ultra gives ten times Pro's weekly usage and, for verified accounts, no five-hour limit. [1] The New Stack noted that removing the session cap helps subscribers who hit the five-hour limit while they still have weekly usage left, but that "if you already run out before the week is over, removing the session cap won't give you more included usage." [17]

History as Max 20x

Launch in April 2025

Anthropic introduced the Max plan on April 9, 2025 with two usage levels. The $200 level was labeled "Maximum Flexibility: 20x more usage than Pro" with the description "Ideal for daily users who collaborate often with Claude for most tasks." The launch post said that "with up to 20x higher usage limits," subscribers could "maintain momentum" on demanding projects, promised priority access to new features and models, and made the plan available in all regions where Claude was offered. [3]

TechCrunch described Max as an answer to OpenAI's $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro and noted that, unlike ChatGPT Pro, Anthropic did not offer an unlimited usage plan. Scott White, Anthropic's product lead, told the outlet the company was not ruling out pricier subscriptions; asked about a $500-a-month plan, he said, "We'll always keep a number of exploratory options available to us." [21] White told CNBC that Anthropic had been receiving requests for such a tier for at least a year and said he was "excited for the people who really think of Claude as something that's indispensable for them not being blocked anymore by these limits." [22]

Claude Code and early limits (2025)

By May 1, 2025, Anthropic's help center said Max subscribers could use Claude Code in the terminal alongside the Claude apps "with one unified subscription," with all activity counting against the same limits. It estimated that the $200 tier allowed approximately 900 messages with Claude every five hours, compared with approximately 225 on the $100 tier. [23]

Heavy Claude Code use soon strained those limits. On July 17, 2025, TechCrunch reported that since the start of that week Claude Code users, many of them on the $200 Max plan, had been hitting unexpectedly restrictive limits without any announcement; an Anthropic representative confirmed the issues but declined to elaborate. One subscriber told TechCrunch the $200 plan often let him make over $1,000 worth of calls a day at API prices. [24]

Weekly limits

On July 28, 2025, Anthropic announced weekly rate limits for Pro and Max, saying it estimated they would apply to "less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage." [25] The limits were scheduled to take effect on August 28, 2025, alongside the existing limits that reset every five hours: one weekly limit covered overall usage and the other Claude Opus 4. Anthropic said the change targeted subscribers running Claude Code "continuously in the background, 24/7" and users sharing accounts or reselling access. [7] It gave TechCrunch these weekly estimates for Claude Code, noting that usage varies with codebase size and other factors: [7]

Plan (August 2025)Weekly Claude Sonnet 4 hours in Claude CodeWeekly Opus 4 hours
Pro40 to 80Not stated
Max, $100140 to 28015 to 35
Max, $200240 to 48024 to 40

Expanded article table

In the same report, Anthropic maintained that the $200 plan offered 20x more usage than Pro and said its rate limits were triggered by a number of tokens rather than by time; Max subscribers could buy usage beyond the limits at standard API rates. [7] When Claude Opus 4.5 launched on November 24, 2025, Anthropic removed Opus-specific caps and increased overall usage limits for Max and Team Premium users so that they would have "roughly the same number of Opus tokens" as they previously had with Sonnet. [26]

Overell later said that when weekly limits were added to Max 20x they were set at 10 times Pro, while the five-hour limit stayed at 20 times. [6] Until the rename, Anthropic's Max help article gave the plan's headline benefit as "5x or 20x the Pro plan's usage allowance, depending on your selected tier" and described Max 20x as including "20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance"; its usage section mentioned a weekly limit across all models without stating a multiple for it. [27] The pricing page's FAQ on the morning of October 30, 2026 said Max gave "5x or 20x more usage per 5-hour session than Pro." [28]

Rename to Ultra

Anthropic announced the rename in a post on the @claudeai account on X at 17:29 UTC on October 30, 2026. "We're renaming our Max plans," it began, listing Max 5x as becoming Max and Max 20x as becoming Ultra, and continued: "Max is still $100/month, and Ultra is still $200. If you're a subscriber, there's nothing you need to do." The same post announced the removal of the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts and said, "Weekly limits remain unchanged." [4] The help center says existing Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically with no price change. [2]

The rename changed how the plan's allowance is described. Before it, the pricing page showed a single Max card priced "From $100" with the line "Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro." [28] Afterward, Ultra had its own card, headed "For your longest tasks," listing "No 5-hour limit," "10x Pro usage every week" and "$200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max." [1]

Overell explained the change in a post about two minutes after the announcement:

When we launched our top plan in April 2025, it had a single limit: 5 hours. It gave you 20x Pro's limit, so we called it Max 20x. When we added weekly limits to Max 20x, we set them to 10x Pro's (the 5-hour limit stayed at 20x).

I get that some new users assumed 20x applied to both limits. We could have done better here, and I'm sorry.

He added that the plan would keep the weekly limit of 10 times Pro while the five-hour limit was removed "so you can keep building without getting blocked mid-session." [6]

Windows Report, ShiftDelete.net and The New Stack covered the change the same day. [39][40][17] ShiftDelete.net and The New Stack both noted that it came a day after OpenAI raised usage limits for ChatGPT Pro subscribers and dropped a planned cut affecting its $200 Pro tier. [40][17]

Litigation over the usage multipliers

On June 14, 2026, Karl Kahn, a Claude subscriber, filed a proposed class action against Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (No. 3:26-cv-05763), assigned to Magistrate Judge Alex G. Tse. [41] According to the complaint, Kahn subscribed to Pro in June 2025 and upgraded to Max 5x on January 5, 2026 and to Max 20x on April 21, 2026. The complaint alleges that the Max 20x plan delivered "just six to eight times the usage of Pro" rather than 20 times, that Max 5x delivered three and a half times, and that a "50%" savings claim shown for Max 20x during checkout was false. [8] It seeks damages, restitution and injunctive relief for U.S. residents who bought or upgraded to Max 5x or Max 20x on Claude.com or the desktop app from April 9, 2025. [42]

Kahn filed an amended complaint on July 20, 2026, and Anthropic moved to dismiss it on August 19. [41][43] The Decoder, citing The Verge, reported that Anthropic argued the relevant details had been available through hyperlinks during the purchase process, while the plaintiffs' lawyers said consumers have no way to verify what an AI service delivers and must rely on honest advertising. [44] In August the court also found a second case, Smith v. Anthropic, related to Kahn's, and on September 8 the plaintiffs filed a consolidated complaint. [41][43][9] According to Anthropic's motion to dismiss, the consolidated complaint brings six California-law claims (under the Consumers Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law, and for negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing), and the plaintiffs base their usage figures on the weekly hour estimates Anthropic sent subscribers in July 2025. The second named plaintiff, Solomon Smith, had upgraded to Max 5x. [9] Engadget, citing The Verge, reported that plaintiffs' attorney Monica Vaca said the terms were not clear and required people to click several hyperlinks to learn what the 5x and 20x claims meant, adding that "they don't know what's in the black box." [45]

Anthropic moved to dismiss the consolidated complaint on September 22, 2026. It argued that it had promised Max subscribers 5 or 20 times more usage per session than Pro, not a fixed total amount of usage, that the purchase flow linked to pages explaining the separate weekly limits, and that its terms reserve the right to "increase or decrease capacity limits." It also argued that the plaintiffs "never allege (nor could they) that they actually received less than 5 or 20 times the amount of per-session usage that a Pro user received," and asked the court to dismiss the case without leave to amend. [9]

The plaintiffs filed their opposition on October 6, 2026, and a reply brief was filed on October 20. [41] A hearing on the motion had been set for November 6, 2026 in San Francisco. [41][43][9] The CourtListener docket lists an entry dated October 30, 2026 labeled "Order on Motion to Dismiss"; its text was not available in the public docket listing as of October 31, 2026. [41] The plaintiffs' claims are allegations.

Reception

Coverage of the April 2025 launch focused on price and positioning against ChatGPT Pro, with TechCrunch presenting the plan as part of a wider search by frontier AI developers for new revenue from power users. [21][22] Later coverage centered on limits. The subscriber who told TechCrunch in July 2025 that the $200 plan often covered more than $1,000 a day in API-priced calls also said Anthropic should communicate changes better: "Just be transparent. The lack of communication just causes people to lose confidence in them." [24] In September 2026, Engadget pointed to a widely shared Reddit post claiming that, once the weekly cap was taken into account, the $200 tier gave only about 1.7 times the usage of the $100 tier. [45]

Reporting the rename, ShiftDelete.net wrote that the clearer names "should also end some confusion around the old '5x' and '20x' labels" and that, for Ultra subscribers, long agentic coding or research sessions "no longer stop after five hours, as long as the weekly allowance lasts." [40] Windows Report noted that because weekly limits remained, "Ultra is not becoming completely unlimited." [39]
