Tau Robotics is a San Francisco company that sells hour-long home cleaning visits performed by a humanoid robot for a flat $30. Chief executive Alexander Koch announced the launch on 28 July 2026, describing each machine as "jointly controlled by a human operator and AI"; the company's own terms of service put it more plainly, saying the robot "is not autonomous" and "a person is controlling it." Access is invite-only through a waitlist, and every visit is recorded on video that Tau keeps and uses to train its models. Company

Koch announced Tau on 25 April 2024, saying the company was "building a general AI for robots" and would start "by building millions of robot arms that learn in the real world." The launch video showed four arms, two of them running autonomously under a single neural network conditioned on different language instructions and two teleoperated, with total hardware cost given as roughly $1,400 [12]. The company's LinkedIn page lists a 2024 founding date and a headcount band of 2 to 10 [20]; its service privacy policy identifies it as Tau Robotics, Inc., a Delaware corporation [4].

Cornelia Weinzierl is the other co-founder; her GitHub profile lists her as "Co-Founder at Tau Robotics" in San Francisco [21], and coverage of the launch named her and Koch as the two founders [8]. Tau's careers page advertises eight full-time San Francisco roles, four of them research positions covering world models, reinforcement learning, imitation learning and pretraining, and simulation and evaluation. The page says the team works "100% in person" because "the robots are here" [22]. Tau has not announced a funding round, and none of the launch coverage reported one.

Alexander Koch and the low-cost arm

Koch holds an MSc in computer science from the Technical University of Munich and lists robot learning, meta-learning and affordable robot hardware as his research areas [10]. His Google Scholar profile shows a 2023 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation paper, "Meta-reinforcement learning via language instructions," written with Zhenshan Bing, Xiangtong Yao, Kai Huang and Alois Knoll [19]. His personal site and X profile both list him as a Z Fellow and an Emergent Ventures Fellow [10][11].

In March 2024 Koch published low_cost_robot on GitHub, an open-source design for a six-degree-of-freedom manipulator built from Dynamixel servos: two XL430-W250 motors for the heavier shoulder joints and four XL330-M288 motors further out on the follower arm, with six lightweight XL330-M077 motors on the leader arm used for teleoperated control. The repository puts the follower at about $250 and the leader at about $180, and is MIT licensed. As of 31 July 2026 it had 3,400 stars and 302 forks [13].

Hugging Face picked the design up. In July 2024 Jess Moss, a contributor listed among LeRobot's authors [16], published koch-v1-1, whose README describes it as "an improved version of the original Alexander Koch's robot to ease assembly. Thus, we call it Koch v1.1" [14]. The changes are practical rather than conceptual, mostly easing assembly and adding CAD files, and the US bill of materials totals $199 for the leader and $278 for the follower [14]. LeRobot's documentation carries a Koch v1.1 build and calibration guide pointing at that repository [15], and Koch remains one of the robot types the library supports alongside SO100, LeKiwi, HopeJR and Reachy2 [16]. ROBOTIS sells parts kits described as "based on Alexander Koch's (founding member of Tau Robotics) low cost arm, modified by the engineers at Hugging Face for a focus on simplicity in assembly" [18].

One correction is worth making, because the claim circulates: the SO-100 and SO-101 arms are not descendants of the Koch design. TheRobotStudio's repository describes the SO-101 as the next-generation SO-100, "originally designed by the RobotStudio in collaboration with Hugging Face," and does not mention Koch at all [17]. What the three arms share is the LeRobot software stack and a unified calibration procedure [15], not a hardware lineage.

The cleaning service

Tau's site markets house cleaning, deep cleaning and office cleaning. The listed capabilities are vacuuming floors including hardwood, rugs and baseboard edges; emptying trash cans and carrying bags out; wiping counters, tables and worktops; and picking spills and stray items off the floor. Three named units are featured for San Francisco: "Chelsea" for kitchens and bathrooms using non-toxic products, "Elon" for recurring weekly visits in the Mission and Noe Valley that Tau says learns where household items belong after a few cleanings, and "Tony" for deep cleans of grout, window tracks and areas behind appliances [2].

The terms of service set out the commercial shape of the offering. A cleaning is a one-hour visit for a flat $30, charged in full at booking through Stripe. The customer, or another adult they authorize, must be present for the entire visit: Tau does not clean unoccupied properties, hold keys, or accept lockbox or door codes. Bedrooms and bathrooms are excluded unless the customer opts in. The robot will not work at height, clean outside the home, handle biohazards, move heavy furniture, or touch firearms, medications or cash. Customers must secure pets, disclose structural hazards, and provide working power and an internet connection, without which the robot cannot be operated. Cancellations more than 24 hours ahead are refunded in full, later cancellations at 50 percent, and no-shows not at all. Quality complaints and damage claims both carry a 48-hour reporting window, and damage claims are investigated against the recording of the visit. Total liability for any claim arising from a cleaning is capped at $2,500, disputes go to American Arbitration Association arbitration in San Francisco with a class-action waiver, and customers can opt out of the arbitration clause within 30 days [3].

Koch told The Register that several hundred people had joined the waitlist by 29 July [5]. He told ABC7 that the pricing is aimed at people outside the existing market: "I think many of our initial customers are people who didn't have house cleaners, or are not that frequent house cleaners, human house cleaners, so it mainly just makes the market bigger" [6].

How much of it is autonomous

Tau's public statements sit at different points on this question. The launch post says each humanoid is "jointly controlled by a human operator and AI" [1]. Section 2 of the terms of service says the robot "is not autonomous. A person is controlling it" [3]. Koch's fuller account to The Register is that an AI policy is always driving the robot's motors, but "a human operator is always guiding that policy, sometimes directly and sometimes through higher-level instructions," and "the balance varies by task." He framed the arrangement as "conceptually similar to autonomous driving," with operators fully in control now, present only for safety later, and eventually removed [5]. Tau has not published what fraction of motion is generated autonomously, and no independent measurement exists.

The staffing is documented in more detail than the autonomy is. One trained operator controls the robot for the duration of a visit and sees the live camera feed. All operators are W-2 employees, some directly employed by Tau and some placed through a staffing agency; the policy states that Tau does not use gig workers or independent contractors for the role. Every operator is background-checked, trained by Tau, and works on site at Tau's San Francisco facility, not from home and not from outside the United States [4]. Koch told The Register that "we plan to enable remote supervision from other locations in the future" [5].

This pattern, a human in the loop whose corrections become training data, is the standard strategy for getting a commercial service robot into the field before the autonomy is ready. The operator does the work today; the recordings of that work become the dataset for the vision-language-action model that is supposed to replace them. Tau states the goal explicitly: the footage trains "the AI models that we hope will eventually do the job without a human operator" [4].

Recording, privacy and data rights

Tau's service privacy policy spells out the trade in plain terms. Every visit is continuously recorded from cameras on the robot's head and wrists. "This is not optional," the policy says. "It is how the service works, and it is why the service is priced the way it is." Alongside video, Tau collects robot telemetry, the operator's motion commands and their timing, spatial and depth data amounting to a three-dimensional record of room layout and object positions, and service notes. The microphones are disabled: the robot has a speaker so the operator can talk to the customer, but audio travels one way only [4].

Faces are not blurred. The policy says Tau does not run facial recognition, build face templates or match faces across visits, but that footage "enters our training pipeline as recorded" because a robot moving through an occupied home has to perceive where people are. Video and telemetry are retained indefinitely unless the customer requests deletion, and the policy defends that choice on the ground that "data that expires is data we cannot learn from twice." Storage is on Google Cloud, encrypted in transit and at rest; the live feed is streamed only to an operator station inside the facility, while stored footage is accessible remotely under role-scoped permissions. A data-labelling vendor has view-only access [4].

Deletion requests remove raw video and telemetry and pull the data from future training sets, but the policy states the limit plainly: "we cannot un-train a model that has already been trained" [4]. Separately, section 10 of the terms grants Tau "a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use footage, telemetry, and other data recorded during your visits," a license that survives account closure, with a commitment not to publish identifying footage without written permission [3]. The Gadgeteer's coverage summarized the trade as the footage being what the customer actually pays with [9].

Consent for other occupants is handled by instruction rather than by technology: the policy says the person who books cannot consent on behalf of the household and asks them to tell everyone in advance, while anyone present can ask the operator to stop at any time, which ends the session [4].

Reception

Ken Goldberg, a UC Berkeley engineering professor, told ABC7 the technology is not ready. "I really think it is too early," he said. "I would be very surprised if these could do anything close to a useful job of cleaning a house. So, being able to pick up objects off the floor is even still a challenge for robots today. And being able to sweep and wipe out areas of, you know, counters and underneath things, that is very, very difficult." He also questioned what demonstration videos establish: "You don't know if it's been speeded up, you don't know if there's a human behind-the-scenes, you don't know if they've kind of very carefully constructed the environment just right, so it works that time." Koch's response was narrower than the marketing: "vacuum cleaning for example, that's working pretty well already. And yeah, like basic, wiping the kitchen counter. That's also pretty doable" [6].

The claims about video speed do not fully line up. Koch's launch post stated that all footage in it is shown at 1x speed [1], and The Register treated the unsped motion as evidence of a capable machine [5]. ABC7 reported that one of the videos Tau provided to the station was sped up [6]. Separately, tech360.tv noted that Tau had not detailed its privacy safeguards in the way that 1X Technologies has for NEO, which blurs faces [7].

Hardware and the import ban

Koch told The Register that the robot's cameras, claws and onboard compute were designed in house, but that the rest of the hardware comes from Unitree [5]. Neither Tau nor its coverage has identified the specific base platform.

Tau launched on the same day the United States restricted robot imports. On 28 July 2026 the Federal Communications Commission announced that new humanoid and quadruped robots would be added to the list of equipment deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to national security, alongside connected power inverters. The determination applies to foreign-produced products regardless of the manufacturer's nationality, though some foreign manufacturers may still sell in the US with conditional approval [23]. Reporting identified Unitree as the firm most exposed and noted that already-authorized models are not covered, even though the FCC can revoke approvals in some cases [24]. The Register observed that Tau had better have spares [5]. These are export controls running in the unfamiliar direction, restricting imports of the platforms US robotics startups build on.

Competitive context

Tau is one of two San Francisco companies selling humanoid cleaning as a service rather than selling a robot, which distinguishes both from the consumer-purchase model.

Gatsby was founded in January 2026 by Aron Frishberg with backing from Nvidia Inception and Entrepreneurs First, and completed its first app-booked apartment cleaning in mid-May 2026 [26]. 1X takes the opposite approach on privacy, offering configurable no-go zones and facial blurring for people the robot interacts with [25]. All three companies are pursuing the same strategy on data: paid work in real homes produces the recordings that are meant to make the work autonomous later.
