Amazon Smart Delivery Glasses
Amazon's smart delivery glasses are a heads-up display worn by drivers on Amazon's last-mile delivery network. Amazon confirmed the device on 2025-10-22 at its Delivering the Future event, held at a delivery station in Milpitas, California, nearly a year after the first press reports about the project [1][2][3]. The glasses show a driver which package to pull out of the van, give turn-by-turn walking directions to the door, capture the proof-of-delivery photo and flag hazards, all without the driver picking up a handheld device [1]. A magnetic cable connects them to a small computer worn on the chest of a harness, with a swappable battery on the opposite side and a dedicated emergency button [1][3]. Amazon has given the device no product name, no price and no specification sheet, and does not sell it to the public.
As of 2026-08-02 the program remains a pilot. Amazon's own post describes technology it is still "developing" and "refining", tested with hundreds of drivers across more than a dozen contractors [1][2]. TechCrunch reported the same day that Amazon was trialing the device with drivers in North America ahead of any broader rollout [4]. No fleet-wide rollout has been announced, and Amazon's newsroom sitemap listed exactly one article about the delivery glasses when checked on 2026-08-02, last modified on the day it was published [13]. One feature separates the device from the rest of the AI glasses category: the wearer is a worker rather than a customer, and the equipment comes from the company that contracts the worker's employer. Beryl Tomay, Amazon's vice president of transportation, told reporters at the launch: "We're testing it at a number of locations with over a dozen delivery service partners and hundreds of drivers across the country," and said those drivers "have been doing real deliveries with these" rather than staged demonstrations [2]. Amazon's own post frames the same population slightly differently, as drivers who "tested early versions of the glasses and provided crucial feedback" during development [1]. Tomay traced the idea to an annual brainstorming session about five years earlier, built on the question of whether a driver could finish a delivery without touching any technology at all [3].
Amazon said it intends to offer the glasses in North America first and then globally, that use will be optional for both the contractor companies and their drivers even after a full rollout, and that the hardware will be provided at no cost [2][3]. Tomay declined to rule out a consumer version when the BBC asked [2].

No silicon has been named. GeekWire reports that the chest-worn controller "houses the device's AI models", placing the inference load off the frame in the pattern common to tethered edge AI wearables, but Amazon has not identified a processor and no teardown had been published as of 2026-08-02. Amazon has also released no weight, field of view, brightness figure, or battery runtime beyond the claim that a swap covers a full route [1][3]. Accounts of the emergency button differ slightly: Amazon's post says it reaches "emergency services along their routes if needed" [1], while GeekWire, briefed at the same event, says it "connects drivers directly to Amazon's emergency support systems" [3].
In the delivery workflow
The glasses are keyed to the vehicle. When the van is put in park the display turns on; when the van moves it turns off, which Amazon presents as a deliberate safety measure so a driver never sees data while driving [1][3]. Tomay said the device can detect that it is in a moving vehicle and shut off by itself: "From a safety perspective, we thought that was important. No distractions" [2].
Once active, the display shows a delivery address and a sorting code for the tote holding the package. GeekWire's Todd Bishop, running a simulated route, saw the code "YLO 339" for the yellow tote and a label number; the glasses scanned the label by computer vision as soon as he looked at the right package, played an audio alert ("Dog on property"), then switched to a simple map with his position and pins for the stops. Proof of delivery came from looking at the package on the doorstep and pressing a button once on the chest controller [3].
Amazon credits the walking navigation to its own geospatial technology and says the glasses guide drivers through complex environments such as apartment buildings [1]. Several capabilities are explicitly future work rather than shipping behavior. Amazon "anticipates" later versions will warn a driver who has left a package at the wrong house or apartment number, detect low light and adjust the lenses, and flag a pet in the yard [1]; the dog alert Bishop heard came during a simulated route rather than a live delivery [3].
Amazon's efficiency claim is vendor-reported and hedged. Tomay estimated up to 30 minutes of savings across an 8 to 10 hour shift from cutting repetitive tasks [2], and GeekWire reports the same figure from initial tests, with executives cautioning that the results are preliminary and could change under wider testing [3].
What the device records, and where the data goes
The glasses carry cameras and microphones, and what they capture does not stay on the device. GeekWire reports that imagery and sensor data from the glasses feed Project Wellspring, Amazon's generative AI mapping effort, which the company uses to refine maps, pick safer parking spots, locate building entrances and plan walking routes for later deliveries [3]. Amazon described Wellspring separately in June 2025 as drawing on satellite imagery, road networks, building footprints, customer instructions, street imagery and prior deliveries, and said it detects building entrances and mailrooms partly by analyzing proof-of-delivery photos [8].
Amazon's stated safeguards are two. The chest controller has a hardware switch that turns off the glasses and every sensor, camera and microphone included, and drivers "can choose to keep it off", Tomay said [2][3]. Amazon also says any imagery collected is processed to "blur or remove personally identifiable information" such as faces and license plates before it is stored or used [3]. It has not published a retention period, an audit mechanism or a driver-facing privacy notice for the device, and has not said whether footage may be used in performance or disciplinary review. Those are open questions rather than documented failures.
Who the drivers work for
Amazon does not employ the drivers who wear the glasses. It contracts with Delivery Service Partners, nominally independent small businesses that hire drivers and run routes out of Amazon facilities [3]. Amazon said in September 2025 that the program, launched in 2018, spans about 4,500 owners, that it was adding $1.9 billion that year for a seven-year total of $16.7 billion, and that the money should lift driver pay to a national average near $23 per hour depending on contractor and location [7]. Counterpoint Research put the driver headcount at 390,000 in 2024, up from 279,000 a year earlier [6].
This structure is why the labor question is sharper than it looks. GeekWire noted that by supplying glasses, training programs and software directly to contractors' drivers, Amazon deepens its involvement with a workforce it says it does not control, which "potentially raises more questions about who truly controls the delivery workforce" [3]. The arrangement has produced litigation and disputes over contractor autonomy for years [3].
Reaction and regulation
The record of direct reaction to the glasses is thin. No union statement, regulatory action or driver complaint about this specific device could be located as of 2026-08-02. The drivers put forward at the launch were positive: Kaleb M., who drives for Maddox Logistics Corporation in Omaha, Nebraska, said "I felt safer the whole time because the glasses have the info right in my field of view" [1], and KC Pangan, a San Francisco driver two months into the study, told GeekWire that hands-free operation was the best part and that the glasses "do practically everything for me" [3]. Both were surfaced by Amazon, so neither is an independent sample.
Criticism of the wider monitoring regime around Amazon drivers is well documented and predates the glasses. The DAIR Institute's October 2025 report "Driven Down", by Adrienne Williams, a former Amazon delivery driver, with Alex Hanna and Sandra Barcenas, catalogs the Mentor app, handheld "Rabbit" scanners, van sensors and third-party Netradyne cameras that record drivers inside and outside the van, and argues that although Amazon presents these as safety systems they work to track movements, police behavior and train AI systems for later use [9][10]. The report does not mention the glasses anywhere, so it is context for the argument the device enters rather than evidence about it. GeekWire noted that regulators, legislators and employees have raised concerns about technology pushing Amazon delivery and fulfillment workers to the limits of safe capacity, and that Amazon disputes the premise [3].
One regulatory development touches wearable displays and driving directly, though it does not name Amazon. Gizmodo reported on 2026-06-17 that the Illinois legislature had passed HB 4843, adding artificial intelligence smart glasses to the state's definition of an electronic device banned while driving, with no hands-free exemption, fines from $75 rising to $150 for repeat offenses, and possible misdemeanor or felony exposure in a serious crash; the bill was awaiting the governor's signature at the time of that report [11]. How it differs from the consumer category
The device sits closer to Vuzix, Microsoft HoloLens or the enterprise-only later life of Google Glass than to anything sold in an eyewear shop. There is nothing to talk to and nothing to post. The display carries a package code, a map and a hazard warning, and it goes dark once the van moves. GeekWire drew the same line, contrasting Amazon's utilitarian design with Meta's Ray-Bans, the Apple Vision Pro and Magic Leap, which it said aim to more fully enhance or overlay the user's environment [3]. Counterpoint put the monochrome green display in the same optical family as consumer products such as Rokid Glasses, and noted that a run above 100,000 units would be the largest MicroLED display order to date, a scale that would matter for the AI glasses market even though none of the units would reach a consumer [6].
The delivery glasses should not be confused with Echo Frames, Amazon's consumer eyewear line, which is audio-only Alexa eyewear with no camera and no display in any of the three generations announced through September 2023 [12][14]. The delivery program belongs with Amazon's operational technology work, near Amazon Robotics and warehouse automation, rather than with its devices business. Reported consumer program
Amazon has never announced consumer display glasses. On 2025-09-10 The Information reported two Amazon glasses programs with internal codenames, one consumer and one for drivers, with a first production run of 100,000 driver units around the second quarter of 2026 [14]. Which codename belongs to which program is not settled in the reporting: Road to VR's write-up of that report attached "Jayhawk" to the consumer device and "Amelia" to the driver glasses [14], its later piece on the confirmed driver glasses called those "codenamed Jayhawk" [5], the BBC referred to them throughout as the "Amelia" glasses [2], and Counterpoint called them "reportedly known internally as the Amelia glasses" [6]. Amazon's own post uses no codename [1]. No mapping should be treated as established, and the 100,000-unit figure is a single reported number Amazon has not confirmed.
