Magic Leap
Magic Leap is an American augmented reality company headquartered at 7500 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Plantation, Florida. Founded in 2010 by Rony Abovitz, it became the most heavily funded AR startup on record, a cumulative total Road to VR put at nearly $4.5 billion in 2024, and shipped two head-worn displays: the Magic Leap One Creator Edition in August 2018 at $2,295, and the enterprise-only Magic Leap 2 in September 2022 starting at $3,299 [2][13][16][20]. Road to VR put the cumulative total at "nearly $4.5 billion" in 2024 and "well over $4 billion" in 2026; the figure is not audited and Magic Leap has never published one [3][20]. The demo problem
Two promotional videos did most of the work of building the hype, and both were misread. A widely circulated clip showed a whale breaching through a school gymnasium floor. Reception was cool and, in places, hostile. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, published a teardown-informed review on 2018-08-27 titled "Magic Leap is a Tragic Heap" that remains the most detailed public critique [15]. His central technical finding was that the much-hyped "Photonic Lightfield Chips" were "just waveguides paired with reflective sequential-color LCOS displays and LED illumination, the same technology everyone else has been using for years, including Microsoft in their last-gen HoloLens" [15]. Six waveguides were stacked, three at each of two focal planes, one per colour channel, making the device a bi-focal display rather than a true light field, and therefore one that "only solves vergence-accommodation conflict in contrived demos" [15]. Luckey also judged the magnetically tracked controller "probably the worst implementation I have seen released to the public" and noted the display was too dim to use outdoors [15].
Sales were the harder problem. The genuinely novel feature was Dynamic Dimming. Unlike virtual reality headsets, which control every photon the wearer sees, optical see-through AR displays are additive: they add light to whatever is already reaching the eye, which is why virtual content washes out in daylight and never looks opaque.
