Oakley Meta HSTN
Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced "HOW-stuhn") is a pair of camera-equipped AI glasses that Meta Platforms makes with EssilorLuxottica under the Oakley brand. Meta unveiled it on 20 June 2025 as the first product in a category it called "Performance AI glasses", opened preorders for a $499 Limited Edition on 11 July 2025 and put the standard range on sale from $399 on 26 August 2025 [1][2]. Built on Oakley's existing HSTN frame, it has a 12-megapixel camera with 3K video, open-ear speakers, five microphones and the Meta AI assistant, but no display [1][3][4].
The HSTN was the first model in the Oakley Meta family [1], and Meta now pitches it as the everyday, cheaper alternative to the wraparound Oakley Meta Vanguard [5]. At launch its advantages over Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) were 3K video and a battery rated for up to eight hours [6]; by October 2025 Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) matched both from $379 [7]. Software updates have since added Garmin and Strava links, conversation focus, slow-motion and hyperlapse modes and, from mid-2026, Meta's Muse Spark model [8][9][10]. The US starting price was still $399 on 15 October 2026 [3].
Announcement and release
Meta's announcement said its Ray-Ban Meta glasses had "sold millions of units since launch" and that it was "expanding our partnership with EssilorLuxottica to build upon another iconic, global brand" [1]. Meta's head of wearables, Alex Himel, told The Verge: "This is our first step into the performance category." He added: "There's more to come." [6] Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Threads that the glasses were "built for action" [11].
Meta built the launch campaign around Kylian Mbappé and Patrick Mahomes, and the public first saw the glasses at Fanatics Fest, held from 20 to 22 June 2025, and then at UFC International Fight Week from 25 to 27 June [1]. Limited Edition preorders opened on 11 July 2025 on Meta.com and Oakley.com, with purchases from 22 July while supplies lasted. The six standard frame and lens combinations went up for preorder on 19 August, priced from $399, and reached stores on 26 August [2].
Design and frame styles
Meta lists the frame shape as round and describes a "lightweight, durable O-Matter frame" [3][5]. Despite earlier reports of a centered camera, the camera sits at one end of the front and the LED privacy light at the other [11]. The standard black frame measures 133 mm hinge to hinge, with 49 mm lenses, a 23 mm bridge and 145 mm temples, and weighs 53 g; standard and high-bridge fits are sold [3]. Lens options are Oakley PRIZM, PRIZM Polarized, clear and Transitions, and Meta lists a prescription range of -12.00 to +6.00 total power [3][12]. The lenses can be swapped, and Meta sells replacement pairs [3][13]; on 31 March 2026 Oakley added Clear to Brown Transitions and PRIZM Dark Golf accessory lenses for the HSTN [14].
The standard versions, on sale since 26 August 2025 [2], cost the same on Meta's US store on 15 October 2026 as at launch [15][3].

Hardware
Qualcomm lists the HSTN as using its Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform, which it says has dual image signal processors and "powerful on device AI" [16]. 3K recording was the headline upgrade at launch, since Ray-Ban Meta glasses then recorded 1080p [6]. The 1080p 60 fps mode in Meta's current specifications came later: a spokesperson for Meta told Gizmodo it would arrive "later this fall" [7], and Android Central found it, along with selectable stabilization levels, in firmware v19.2 in early November 2025 [17]. Meta told Gizmodo the speakers were the same as on Ray-Ban Meta, though its reviewer found playback louder [7]. The IPX4 rating covers splashes, rain and sweat but not submersion, and Meta says to keep the charging case away from liquids because the case itself is not water-resistant [1][12].

Meta AI features
Assistant and visual questions
Meta AI starts when the wearer says "Hey Meta" or taps the frame. It handles calls, messages over WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and the phone's own app, music apps such as Spotify and Apple Music, and general questions. Meta says many functions work offline but Meta AI needs an internet connection, and the Meta AI phone app (formerly Meta View) is required [12]. Meta's launch examples were sporty: "Hey Meta, how strong is the wind today?" before a golf drive, checking surf conditions, or "Hey Meta, take a video" to post to Stories hands-free [1].
The camera also feeds the assistant, a multimodal use of computer vision. UploadVR described Meta AI as "the company's LLM-based assistant that can see via the camera when you ask about something in view", alongside speech translation and QR code scanning [4]. Kate Kozuch of Tom's Guide used these "look and tell me" prompts to identify landmarks and get recipe ideas from the contents of a fridge [18].
Models behind the assistant
UploadVR reported on 9 June 2026 that Muse Spark, the first model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, would replace Llama 4 as the model behind Meta AI on all Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses except Meta Ray-Ban Display [19]. Meta had begun a gradual rollout of Muse Spark to Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses in the US and Canada on 12 May 2026 [20], and its v26 release notes (29 June 2026) call it "Next-gen Meta AI on your glasses delivering smarter answers, with enhanced visual perception" [10].
On 23 September 2026, at Meta Connect 2026, Meta said its personal AI agent, Muse, would come to its glasses "in the coming months" [21]. EssilorLuxottica said Muse would reach all of the two companies' AI glasses, in the US only, and listed "private processing" later in 2026 and new guided-workout and nutrition features among the coming changes [22].
Live AI, translation and conversation focus
Live AI lets Meta AI "see what you see continuously" during a session, and v22 (3 February 2026) added detailed responses, richer visual descriptions meant for accessibility, to Live AI on the HSTN in the US and Canada [10]. Live speech translation, a form of machine translation, was available from launch [4][6]. Software v23 (10 March 2026) added five translation languages for Early Access users and let HSTN and Ray-Ban Meta wearers in the US and Canada interrupt Meta AI and ask follow-up questions without repeating "Hey Meta"; v26 added 14 more translation languages, including Japanese, Korean and Mandarin [10].
Conversation focus amplifies the voice of the person in front of the wearer through the open-ear speakers, and the level is adjusted by swiping the right temple. The HSTN got it in the first rollout, when Early Access members with Ray-Ban Meta or HSTN glasses in the US and Canada received it with v21 on 16 December 2025 [9]. Meta's v26 notes list the feature as free during Early Access in 21 countries, without naming models [10]. In June 2026 Meta capped free use at three hours a month, with 15 hours for Meta One Premium subscribers, then paused the limits in late July 2026 after user feedback; The Verge had shown that the feature runs on the device without an internet connection [23]. The v21 update also added a Spotify command, "Hey Meta, play a song to go with my view", that picks music to match what the camera sees [10].
Sports and fitness
Garmin and Strava integration debuted on the Vanguard, but Android Central reported on 2 November 2025 that Garmin, Strava and Health Connect links, including Garmin-triggered autocapture, were reaching the HSTN through a server-side change [8]. With a supported Garmin watch or bike computer running the Meta AI app from Garmin's Connect IQ store, the glasses answer questions about time, distance and pace and record clips automatically during a workout, as long as the phone, watch and glasses are all present [8]. From December 2025, HSTN owners with a compatible Garmin device could also create run and bike workouts by voice [24].
Software v21 added hyperlapse recording of up to 30 minutes, slow motion of up to one minute and adjustable stabilization. Later updates brought snow-sports tracking with a Garmin device (v23), Early Access autocapture for everyday use on the HSTN in the US and Canada (v25, 14 May 2026) and workout stats during WhatsApp group voice chats (v26) [10]. On 1 July 2026 Meta began rolling out 18Birdies and Arccos golf integrations for its glasses in the US and Canada, with spoken yardages, voice score logging and club recommendations; the same post promoted PRIZM Dark Golf lenses for both Oakley models, which Oakley had announced on 31 March [13][14].
Availability and pricing
Meta's launch post named 15 first markets and said it was working to bring the glasses to Mexico, India and the UAE later in 2025 [1].

| Malaysia | 20 October 2026 | RM2,069 [35] |
| Thailand | 20 October 2026 | 16,290 baht [36] |
Meta's Connect 2026 announcements on 23 September 2026 included no new Oakley model [37][38]. Meta said its lineup would pass 100 glasses options across Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta Glasses by the end of 2026, and listed Turkey, Poland, Portugal, Israel, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia and the Philippines as markets where Oakley Meta would arrive later in the year [37]; Meta's blog version adds Macau [38]. Meta also began taking Oakley Meta orders with prescription lenses on Meta.com in Canada [38].
Reception
Nicholas Sutrich of Android Central (9 August 2025) called it "the new gold standard for smart glasses", praising its 1080p video stabilization, Meta AI integration and a charging case with a bigger battery, though he found the battery gain worth about an hour over Ray-Ban Meta under full use [39]. Kate Kozuch of Tom's Guide (21 August 2025), reviewing the limited-edition launch model, singled out the polarized 24K PRIZM lenses and got close to an hour of video capture per charge, against about 30 minutes from her Ray-Ban Meta glasses [18].
James Pero of Gizmodo (3 October 2025) was more conflicted. An hour of podcast playback at 75% volume, a 10-minute call and a few 3K clips took his pair from 100% to 70% in about two hours, roughly in line with Meta's 8-hour claim for intermittent use. He noted the same IPX4 rating as the Ray-Ban models, called Meta AI "still way too variable for my taste", and concluded: "With a price premium over the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and a new pair of Oakley Vanguard glasses on the way, I'm left wondering who exactly the HSTN are for." [7]
EssilorLuxottica's sales figure for 2025, more than 7 million Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, does not separate the two brands [40].
Privacy and race rules
The HSTN uses the same capture LED as Meta's other camera glasses: the white light blinks while photos or video are captured, "has no off switch", and the camera stops working if it is covered [41][12]. In July 2026 Meta said an update would also disable the camera if the LED was physically tampered with [41]. Wider debates about bystander consent are covered at smart glasses privacy.
Ironman's 2026 competition rules, in force from 2 March 2026, ban using any device, glasses included, to capture photos or video during a race, on pain of disqualification. Canadian Running reported the change as a ban on Oakley Meta glasses, and the British professional triathlete Joe Skipper criticized it [42].
