Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) is the second generation of Ray-Ban Meta, the camera and audio AI glasses that Meta Platforms makes with the eyewear group EssilorLuxottica. Meta announced it at its Connect conference on 17 September 2025 and began selling it the same day from $379, while keeping the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) on sale from $299 [1][2][3]. The Gen 2 looks almost identical to its predecessor and keeps a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers and five microphones [4][5]. The changes are mostly internal: by Meta's rating the battery now lasts up to eight hours, almost twice as long as the first generation's, and the camera records 3K Ultra HD video [1]. It has no display [3]. The wearer controls it by voice, with a touchpad on the right arm and with a capture button, and most of its functions run through the Meta AI assistant and the Meta AI phone app [4][5][6].

Two frames designed around prescription lenses, Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics, joined the generation on 31 March 2026 at $499 and up [7]. Meta kept selling the Gen 2 at its launch price after the $449 Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) arrived on 23 September 2026; in mid-October its US and UK stores still listed it from $379 and £379 [8][9][10]. The wider family, which also includes the Oakley Meta sports frames and the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio, is covered at Meta Ray-Ban AI Glasses [8].

Announcement and release

Meta announced the Gen 2 at Connect 2025 on 17 September 2025. The other glasses it showed that day were the Meta Ray-Ban Display, its first model with a screen, which includes the Meta Neural Band in the box, and the Oakley Meta Vanguard for sport [3][11]. Meta's announcement called Ray-Ban Meta "the world's best-selling AI glasses", citing IDC sales data as of July 2025, and said the Gen 2 brought "some key under-the-hood improvements" [1]. UploadVR wrote that the update brought the regular Ray-Ban Meta up to parity with the Oakley Meta HSTN, which already offered 3K recording and an eight-hour battery [3].

Meta said the Gen 2 could be bought from launch day through meta.com and Ray-Ban.com in most countries that already sold Ray-Ban Meta [2]; Android Central counted 18 of them [12]. Switzerland and the Netherlands were new markets for the line [1]. Meta promised Brazil "soon" and said Mexico and India would follow later that fall [1].

Design and frame styles

Buyers choose between the rounder Headliner, the cat-eye Skyler and the Wayfarer, which comes in standard and large fits; all three shapes carry over from the first generation [2][13][14]. Tom's Guide reported identical dimensions and a weight gain of two grams [13], and CNET's Scott Stein said the two generations look the same in size and shape and share the same leather-like charging case [5].

Meta's three launch-day seasonal colors, each sold for a limited time, paired a Transitions lens with a matching frame: Sapphire with Shiny Cosmic Blue on the Wayfarer, Amethyst with Shiny Mystic Violet on the Skyler, and Emerald with Shiny Asteroid Grey on the Headliner [2]. Meta also brought back a clear-frame Wayfarer in Matte Transparent, with Brown Mirror Gold lenses in a few retail locations or Transitions Ruby lenses for $509 on Ray-Ban.com [2]. Three more color combinations for spring and summer followed on 31 March 2026 [7].

Lens options include sun, clear, polarized and Transitions photochromic lenses, and all styles take prescription lenses at extra cost; Meta lists a range of -12.00 to +6.00 total power for the Wayfarer [4][15][16]. Engadget's Karissa Bell noted that polarized pairs start at $409 and Transitions pairs at $459 [17].

Hardware

Photos from the 12 MP ultra-wide camera stay at 3024 by 4032 pixels, as on the first generation, but video now reaches 3K Ultra HD, with "more than twice as many pixels as the previous generation", according to Meta [1][4][13]. Meta's announcement promised ultrawide HDR and capture at up to 60 frames per second; its store blog said both would arrive later in the fall [1][2]. At launch UploadVR listed three recording modes (3K at 30 fps, 1440p at 30 fps and 1200p at 60 fps), with a maximum recording length of three minutes in each [3]. Meta's current specification page instead lists 3K Ultra HD at 30 fps, 1080p+ at 30 or 60 fps and 720p+ at 120 fps [4]. Like earlier models, the glasses shot only in portrait orientation at launch [5][11].

Sound comes from open-ear speakers built into the arms (two in total, according to Android Central), which use adaptive volume and carry a 76.1 dB(C) loudness rating [4][12]. Meta's spec sheet places the five microphones as two per arm plus a fifth by the nose pad, and its store page says calls block 90% of background noise [4]. The Blayzer and Scriber Optics frames are the exception within the generation: they have six microphones, with a second one by the nose pad [18][19]. Meta's store footnote on the Gen 3's six-microphone array says the comparison is with the Gen 2 Wayfarer, Headliner and Skyler and excludes the two Optics frames [9].

Meta's battery rating is eight hours of typical use, almost double the first generation's, with 19 hours on standby [1][4]. A 20-minute charge reaches 50%, and the case holds enough for another 48 hours of use [1]. Storage is 32 GB, which Meta rates for 1,000+ photos and 100+ 30-second videos [4]. Android Central and Tom's Guide list an IPX4 rating for splash resistance; Meta's Gen 2 specification page does not give a rating [4][12][13].

Meta did not name the processor in its Gen 2 announcement or on its specification page [1][4]. Tom's Guide listed the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 for both the first and second generations, and Qualcomm's device finder lists the Scriber Optics frame from the Gen 2 line as powered by the AR1 Gen 1 [13][20]. Meta had named the same chip for the 2023 model [21].

Meta AI features

Meta's release notes cover Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses together, and most of the Gen 2's AI features arrived through these shared software updates [22]. Saying "Hey Meta" wakes the assistant, which answers questions, describes what the camera sees when asked, plays music and podcasts, handles calls and messages, and reads out some phone notifications [3][23]. Live AI, which began rolling out in English in the US and Canada in May 2025, lets the wearer hold a running conversation with the assistant while it sees what the wearer sees [22]. CNET found that the mode drains the battery quickly, although the Gen 2 lasted one hour and 20 minutes in Live AI against 30 minutes for the first generation [5]. The December 2025 update added Spotify recommendations based on what the wearer is looking at, which Meta said pairs computer vision with Spotify's personalization [24].

Live translation, Meta's machine translation feature for conversations, lets the wearer hear speech in another language translated into their own, while the wearer's replies can be shown or played to the other person in the Meta AI app [22]. Meta added German and Portuguese to live translation on launch day, and its announcement promised two-way translated conversations among six languages that would also work offline, in airplane mode, for anyone who had downloaded the language pack in advance [1]. Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Swedish and Finnish followed in Early Access in March 2026 without the need for language packs, and the v26 update of June 2026 added 14 more languages [22]. Meta's Gen 2 store page lists 20 languages [4].

Conversation focus, unveiled with the Gen 2, combines the open-ear speakers with beamforming and real-time spatial processing so that the voice of the person the wearer is facing stands out from surrounding noise [1][24]. Meta began rolling it out to Early Access users of Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN in the US and Canada with the v21 update on 16 December 2025 [24]. Meta says it is "not a hearing aid or medical device" and does not offer it on the Optics frames [25]. In HearAdvisor lab tests reported by HearingTracker, Gen 2 glasses using it earned a B SoundGrade as a hearable [26]. In early July 2026 UploadVR reported that Meta had begun limiting free use, with longer access reserved for Meta One Premium subscribers [27]. Engadget described the cap as three hours a month, or 15 hours on the $20-a-month Premium plan, and reported on 25 July that Meta had paused the limits after user feedback, saying the feature would "remain available for free through our Early Access Program" [28]. UploadVR noted that, unlike the server-based features other consumer devices put behind subscriptions, conversation focus runs locally on the glasses [27].

From the v26 update, which began rolling out in the week of 29 June 2026, Meta AI on Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Glasses runs on Muse Spark, described in the release notes as "next-gen Meta AI on your glasses delivering smarter answers, with enhanced visual perception" [22]. UploadVR reported in June 2026 that Muse Spark would replace Llama 4 as the model behind Meta AI on Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses, except the Meta Ray-Ban Display [29]. Muse Spark was the first model released by Meta Superintelligence Labs and, unlike the Llama models, is not open source [29].

The release notes name the Gen 2 specifically for one later feature. Autocapture, in which Meta AI records moments during an outing and assembles highlight videos, reached Early Access in the May 2026 v25 update for Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2), Oakley Meta HSTN and Oakley Meta Vanguard in the US and Canada [22]. The v26 update added dynamic photo, which takes several frames per shot and lets the wearer pick one, along with Photo Ultra HDR and a Battery Saver Mode [22].

Meta's engineering team wrote in September 2026 that on its AI glasses in general, many requests, such as placing a call or answering a text, run entirely on the device, while more advanced features need models "far larger than can be packed into a pair of glasses" and so run in the cloud [30]. Meta said its hands-free WhatsApp summaries, announced for Early Access in March 2026, would be processed on-device [7]. For cloud requests, Meta said it was bringing Private Processing, the confidential computing system it introduced for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app in 2025, to its AI glasses so that "even Meta cannot access your data", without giving a date [30][31]. Meta says the Meta AI phone app is required; owners use it to manage the glasses and their settings, share photos and talk to the assistant [4][9].

At Connect 2026 on 23 September 2026, Meta said it would bring Muse, the personal AI agent it had launched earlier that month, to its AI glasses "in the coming months" [32]. Engadget's comparison of the two generations said that nearly all of the software shown with the Gen 3 would come to Gen 2 owners as well, naming Muse and the FDA-cleared hearing enhancement feature [6]. Hearing enhancement is due in the US later in 2026 for $149.99 or with a Meta One subscription [32]. Mark Zuckerberg said in the keynote that it was "coming first to Meta Glasses", and HearingTracker reported that Meta had not yet published a list of supported frames [26]. In mid-October 2026 Meta's release notes still showed v26, from June, as the newest update for Ray-Ban Meta glasses [22].

Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics

Meta's "first prescription-optimized AI glasses", the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) and Scriber Optics (Gen 2), were announced on 31 March 2026 [7]. Blayzer has a rectangular shape and comes in two sizes; Scriber is rounder and comes in one [7][19]. Both have hinges that swing 10 degrees further open than usual, swappable nose pads and temple tips an optician can bend to fit [7][19]. US pre-orders opened the same day through Meta's and Ray-Ban's websites at $499 and up, and optical shops in the US and some other countries began selling them on 14 April 2026 [7].

Meta's store lists the Blayzer Optics with a six-microphone array, two of them near the nose pad, "over 8 hours" of battery life and a weight of 49.2 grams in the standard size [18]. Unlike the standard Gen 2 frames, the Optics models add an action button on top of the right temple arm. Owners can set it to start Meta AI or a Live AI session, ask a saved question, read out stats from a paired Garmin device, or record slow-motion or hyperlapse video [33].

Engadget's Karissa Bell rated the Optics frames 7.4 out of 10 and called them "probably the most comfortable pair of Ray-Ban Meta glasses I have tried", but pricing out the prescription configuration Meta sent her came to more than $700 before tax and shipping [34]. Blayzer Optics gained Shiny Brick Brown and Shiny Transparent Ocean Blue as fall 2026 seasonal colors, and Scriber Optics got Transparent Dark Olive, all for a limited time [35]. Meta's store later described the Gen 3 as having the same slimmer design, action button, microphone array and adjustable temple tips as the Optics frames [9].

Reception

Reviewers treated the Gen 2 as a modest update that fixed the first generation's weakest point, its battery life [5][16]. Engadget's Karissa Bell scored it 87 and wrote that Meta had turned something that "once felt gimmicky" into "a genuinely useful accessory" [17]. She got a little more than five and a half hours of continuous music playback, used live translation on a walking tour in Argentina, and found Live AI still "more of a novelty" [17]. Engadget later named the Gen 2 its best smart glasses of 2025 [42].

CNET's Scott Stein gave the Gen 2 an Editor's Choice award for 2025, called the $379 glasses "my go-to choice" and wrote that the doubled battery life "has a massive impact on how functional these glasses feel"; on one day they lasted from 8 a.m. to nearly 9 p.m. with mixed use [5]. He was less impressed by the assistant. Asked several times to identify a flower, it gave a different answer each time and eventually admitted it was being unreliable [5]. Tom's Guide's Mike Prospero kept the Gen 2 at the top of the site's smart glasses rankings and saw "no compelling reason" for first-generation owners to upgrade, but said Meta's plan to use AI chats to target ads in the US dampened his enthusiasm [16].

In a February 2026 report on the second half of 2025, Counterpoint Research said its analysis of user comments found that positive feedback on video performance "increased significantly" for the Gen 2, while users still wanted longer battery life across Meta's lineup [43]. Once the Gen 3 was out, Engadget's comparison argued that a second-hand Gen 2 was likely the better buy for anyone who did not need prescription lenses [6], and TechRadar's David Nield saw little reason for existing Gen 2 owners to move to the new model unless they wanted its frame designs [14].

Privacy and controversy

Every pair has a white capture LED on the front that blinks while photos or videos are being taken. Meta says the light has no off switch and that the camera is disabled when the glasses detect that the LED has been blocked; in July 2026 it said it was updating its glasses to also disable the camera if the LED had been physically tampered with or destroyed [44]. Engadget's Karissa Bell showed on 31 July 2026 that a $16.99 kit of stickers sold online hid the LED on her second-generation glasses without triggering a warning. Meta responded that such products "violate our policies" and that it was "exploring ways to strengthen our ability to detect such tampering and disable the camera" [45].

In early October 2026 the Dutch optical chain Hans Anders stopped selling Ray-Ban Meta glasses in its stores and online in the Netherlands and Belgium, citing "the ongoing public and political debate surrounding smart glasses" [46]. Wider legal and regulatory disputes over Meta's glasses are covered at smart glasses privacy.

Successor

Meta announced the third generation on 23 September 2026, priced at $449, $70 above the Gen 2. It brings over the action button and professionally adjustable temple tips from the Optics frames, uses six microphones and is rated for one more hour of battery life. The camera specification is unchanged. The Wayfarer is the one Gen 2 shape that continues; the Skyler and Headliner were not carried over, and the Aviator and Zena are new [6][8][9][14]. Meta kept the Gen 2 in its lineup. As of 15 October 2026, Meta's US store listed the Wayfarer, Skyler, Headliner, Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics (Gen 2) next to the Gen 3 and the Gen 1 [9].
