Meta Ray-Ban AI Glasses

RawGraph

Meta Ray-Ban AI Glasses (marketed as Ray-Ban Meta) are a line of camera-and-audio AI glasses developed by Meta Platforms with EssilorLuxottica, the French-Italian eyewear group that owns Ray-Ban. The line began with Ray-Ban Stories in September 2021, was relaunched under the Ray-Ban Meta name on September 27, 2023 at $299, and reached its second generation on September 17, 2025 at $379 [1][5][14]. The glasses have no display: they pair an ultra-wide 12 MP camera, a five-microphone array and open-ear speakers with the Meta AI assistant, inside frames that look like ordinary Wayfarers, Headliners and Skylers. That combination turned a category that had failed repeatedly into a commercial success. Counterpoint Research put Meta's share of global smart glasses shipments at 73% in the first half of 2025 and 82% in the second half, and EssilorLuxottica told investors on February 11, 2026 that it had sold more than 7 million Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta units during calendar 2025 alone [12][20][21][40].

The Ray-Ban Meta line is the volume product in a family that has since grown to include the Oakley Meta sport collection, the display-equipped Meta Ray-Ban Display and its Meta Neural Band wristband, and the Meta-branded Meta Glasses. This article covers the Ray-Ban Meta hardware itself and the Meta AI software platform the whole family shares.

Background and partnership

Meta's collaboration with EssilorLuxottica dates to 2019. Its first product, Ray-Ban Stories, launched on September 9, 2021 at $299 in 20 style combinations, sold in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the United Kingdom [1]. The two companies extended the arrangement on September 17, 2024 with a long-term agreement to "collaborate into the next decade to develop multi-generational smart eyewear products" [6]. That press release announced no money changing hands in either direction; it named no equity stake, no investment and no governance terms.

The equity relationship runs the other way from what is sometimes reported. Bloomberg reported on July 8, 2025 that Meta had acquired just under 3% of EssilorLuxottica, a holding valued at roughly EUR 3 billion (about $3.5 billion), and was weighing further purchases that could take it to around 5%. Neither company confirmed the transaction in that reporting, and the figure should be treated as Bloomberg-sourced [11]. EssilorLuxottica has separately described smart eyewear as central to its own strategy, with chairman and CEO Francesco Milleri saying in the September 2024 announcement that the partnership was "an important milestone in our journey to making glasses the gateway to the connected world" [6].

Manufacturing and retail sit with EssilorLuxottica. Counterpoint's H1 2025 analysis credited Luxottica not only with scaling production but with driving sales through its own channels: "Luxottica's own retail networks, including online and offline Ray-Ban stores, Sunglass Hut and LensCrafters, account for a significant portion of the product's sales" [12].

Ray-Ban Stories (2021 to 2023)

Ray-Ban Stories carried dual 5 MP cameras, a three-microphone beamforming array with background-noise suppression, open-ear speakers, and a hard-wired capture LED that lit when a photo or video was being taken. Clips were capped at 30 seconds at launch. Frames were Wayfarer, Wayfarer Large, Round and Meteor, and the companion app was called Facebook View [1]. In March 2022 Meta raised the video limit to 60 seconds, expanded to Spain, Austria and Belgium at EUR 329 with France following on April 14, 2022, and grew the range to 28 variations [1].

The product did not work. Internal Meta documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and reported in August 2023 showed that about 300,000 units had sold between the September 2021 launch and February 2023, that fewer than 10% of buyers used the glasses regularly, that monthly active users numbered roughly 27,000, and that the return rate was about 13%, with buyers citing connectivity problems, battery life and difficulty importing captured media [3][4]. Meta did not comment on the figures at the time [3].

Regulators objected to the glasses on a different ground. On September 17, 2021 the Irish Data Protection Commission and the Italian Garante issued a joint statement noting that "there is a very small indicator light that comes on when recording is occurring" and that "it has not been demonstrated to the DPC and Garante that comprehensive testing in the field was done by Facebook or Ray-Ban to ensure the indicator LED light is an effective means of giving notice." The two authorities asked Meta to demonstrate the LED's effectiveness and to run a public information campaign [2]. Meta committed in March 2022 to an EU marketing campaign to "educate people on wearable devices and smart glasses and how they work" [1]. Ray-Ban Stories was superseded by Ray-Ban Meta in October 2023 and is no longer sold [5][27].

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1, 2023)

Meta and EssilorLuxottica announced the Stories successor on September 27, 2023 under the name "Ray-Ban | Meta smart glasses", with preorders opening the same day and retail availability from October 17, 2023 in 15 countries. Pricing started at $299, unchanged from Stories. The hardware moved to the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform, an ultra-wide 12 MP camera shooting 1080p video up to 60 seconds, a five-microphone array, custom open-ear speakers with extended bass, an IPX4 rating, and a charging case holding eight additional charges for about 36 hours of total use. Meta offered over 150 custom frame and lens combinations, including a new Headliner shape alongside the Wayfarer [5].

Meta AI shipped with the hardware, but narrowly: the announcement said "Meta AI features will be available in the US in beta only at launch" [5]. The camera-aware version of the assistant arrived in software version v4 on April 23, 2024, adding the ability to "ask your glasses questions about the world around you" [34]. Video length was raised from 60 seconds to three minutes in v6 on June 26, 2024 [34].

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2, 2025)

The current generation was announced at Meta Connect on September 17, 2025, starting at $379. Meta's own summary of the changes is narrow: the same product with better battery, better video and more languages [14].

  • Battery: up to eight hours of typical use, described by Meta as "almost twice the battery life of Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1)", with a 50% charge in 20 minutes and a charging case supplying an additional 48 hours [14].
  • Video: 3K Ultra HD with ultrawide HDR, up to 60 frames per second, and "more than twice as many pixels as the previous generation" [14]. Counterpoint's H2 2025 analysis of user comments found that positive feedback on video performance "increased significantly" for Gen 2 [40].
  • Live translation added German and Portuguese, bringing supported back-and-forth conversation to six languages, usable offline once a language pack is downloaded [14].
  • Frames: Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner, plus three limited-time seasonal colors at launch [14].

Meta has never published the processor used in Gen 2. Neither the launch announcement nor the 2026 product comparison page names a chip, and no independent teardown identifying one had been published as of August 1, 2026 [14][27].

Two markets were added at announcement, Switzerland and the Netherlands, with Mexico and India following in fall 2025 and Brazil later [14].

Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics (2026)

On March 31, 2026 Meta introduced Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) and Ray-Ban Meta Scriber Optics (Gen 2), which the company calls its "first prescription-optimized AI glasses". Blayzer is a rectangular design in Standard and Large sizes; Scriber is rounder. Both use overextension hinges, interchangeable nose pads and optician-adjustable temple tips, and Meta says they "support nearly all prescriptions". Preorders opened the same day on Meta.com and Ray-Ban.com in the United States at a starting price of $499, with availability at optical retailers in the United States and select international markets from April 14, 2026 [26]. These are a Gen 2 sub-line rather than a new generation.

Weight is a gap in the public record. Meta has not published a figure for any Ray-Ban Meta generation, and the 49 to 52 gram numbers that circulate in secondary coverage do not trace to a first-party specification. The closest thing to a published set of figures is UploadVR's November 2025 Meta Ray-Ban Display review, which states 69 grams for the Display against 52 grams for the regular Ray-Ban Meta and 45 grams for a non-smart Ray-Ban equivalent, without saying where those numbers come from [19].

Meta AI on the glasses

The assistant is the reason the second generation of the product line worked where the first did not. Users say "Hey Meta" and can make calls, send messages, set timers and reminders, control music, ask general questions, and since April 2024 ask about what the camera can see [34]. Meta's engineering group has described the underlying research as multimodal models that reason over "text, audio, video, and even IMU motion sensor data", naming its AnyMAL work as the lineage; the company has not published which specific Llama version or other large language model serves requests from the glasses, nor how the workload splits between the device and the cloud [9].

Live AI lets the assistant see continuously through the camera for the length of a session and hold a running conversation without the wake word being repeated. Live translation renders speech between languages through the open-ear speakers. Both were first offered to Early Access Program members in the United States and Canada in the v11 update of December 16, 2024, alongside Shazam song identification, and reached the general release in v15 on May 14, 2025 with English, French, Italian and Spanish [8][34].

From v26 on June 29, 2026 the assistant on the glasses runs on Muse Spark, Meta's agentic model line, described in the release notes as "next-gen Meta AI on your glasses delivering smarter answers, with enhanced visual perception" [34]. Meta's broader Muse Spark rollout on July 24, 2026 positioned the model as one "built to plan, work with your apps, and follow through from start to finish", connecting to email and calendar and carrying out multi-step tasks [37]. Meta Glasses, launched June 23, 2026, were the first Meta eyewear to ship with Muse Spark from day one [33].

Meta One and the first paywall

Every built-in software feature of Meta's glasses was free until mid-2026. That changed with Meta One, the subscription Meta began rolling out in select regions in June 2026 across Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Meta AI [35]. It appears in the glasses release notes at v26 on June 29, 2026 as "gradually rolling out Meta One to unlock premium features" [34].

The first glasses feature placed behind it is conversation focus, which uses the open-ear speakers to amplify the voice of the person in front of the wearer above background noise. According to Meta's support documentation, reported by UploadVR on July 6, 2026, Meta One Premium subscribers get 15 hours of conversation focus against 3 hours for non-subscribers [35]. Meta One Plus is priced at $8 per month in the United States and Meta One Premium at $20 per month, figures UploadVR attributed to TechCrunch rather than to a Meta price page [35]. UploadVR noted that the reaction was unusually hostile for a subscription tier because conversation focus runs locally on the glasses rather than on Meta's servers, unlike the cloud features that subscriptions elsewhere in consumer hardware typically gate [35]. Neither the billing period for the hour allowances nor the behavior of the feature once the free allowance is exhausted has been documented on a Meta page this article could verify.

Companion app and developer platform

The glasses require a phone app for setup, media import and settings. It began as Facebook View for Ray-Ban Stories, became Meta View for Ray-Ban Meta, and was renamed the Meta AI app on April 29, 2025, folding device management into the same app used for Meta's assistant elsewhere [1][10].

Meta announced the Meta Wearables Device Access Toolkit on September 18, 2025 and opened a public developer preview on December 4, 2025. It lets iOS and Android apps capture a photo or open a video stream from the glasses, at a maximum of 720p and 30 frames per second over Bluetooth, and play audio back through the speakers. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN were supported at preview, with Oakley Meta Vanguard and Meta Ray-Ban Display to follow; on the Display, the toolkit receives camera imagery but cannot draw anything on the heads-up display. Developers can build and test on their own glasses but cannot yet publish to the public, which Meta has said will come during 2026. Meta AI voice commands are not exposed to third parties in the preview. Early access partners included 18Birdies, Be My Eyes, HumanWare, Logitech's Streamlabs, Microsoft's Seeing AI, Twitch, L+R, and Pixel and Texel [15][18].

Sales and reception

Ray-Ban Meta is the first consumer smart-glasses product to reach meaningful scale. Where Google Glass, Snap Spectacles and Ray-Ban Stories all stalled, EssilorLuxottica CFO Stefano Grassi told the company's Q3 2024 earnings call that "in 60% of the Ray-Ban stores in Europe, in EMEA, Ray-Ban Meta is the best-seller" [7].

EssilorLuxottica's financial disclosures track the same curve. Third-quarter 2025 revenue reached EUR 6,867 million, up 11.7% at constant exchange rates and what the company called its best quarterly performance ever; wearables contributed more than four percentage points of that growth, which UploadVR calculated as more than a third of the total [16][17]. Full-year 2025 revenue was EUR 28,491 million, up 11.2% at constant rates, with the company listing "AI-glasses selling more than 7 million units in the FY, with all the regions and brands contributing" among its headline results [20]. Note that this is a single-year figure and not a cumulative total; the roughly 9 million lifetime estimate is UploadVR's arithmetic, not a company statement [21].

On Meta's side, Mark Zuckerberg told investors on the Q1 2026 earnings call that daily usage of the glasses had tripled year on year and that they remained "one of the fastest growing categories of consumer electronics ever" [31]. Bloomberg reported in January 2026 that Meta and EssilorLuxottica were discussing doubling or tripling production capacity; whether that happened has not been confirmed [31].

Counterpoint's H2 2025 note recorded the main outstanding complaint from buyers: "users continue to express expectations for further improvements in battery life across Meta's new product lineup" [40].

Privacy, regulation and litigation

Camera glasses raise a bystander problem that no software setting solves, and the Ray-Ban Meta line has been the test case. Meta's position, set out in a newsroom post published July 7, 2026 and updated July 23, 2026, rests on the capture LED: "Whenever content is being captured for your gallery, this white light blinks to let people know you're capturing content", and "the capture LED has no off switch." Meta says that from the second generation onward "the camera is automatically disabled if we detect that the capture LED has been blocked", and that a further update disables the camera "if they detect the LED was physically tampered with or destroyed". On captured media, Meta says photos and videos "are stored privately on your glasses" until the wearer imports them [36].

That protection has been defeated in practice. Engadget's Karissa Bell reported on July 31, 2026 that a commercially sold accessory, a notched clear plastic piece under a black sticker, hid the LED from bystanders on second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses while admitting enough peripheral light that the sensor never registered a blockage. The same seller offered a separate clip-on LED cover for Oakley Meta Vanguard, which Bell described as more effective still. Meta's response was that such products "violate our policies, so we're exploring ways to strengthen our ability to detect such tampering and disable the camera" [39].

On May 20, 2026 the Texas Attorney General opened an investigation into Meta's AI glasses and issued a civil investigative demand, citing the glasses' "always enabled" processing mode and stating that "this LED indicator is not active during the smart glasses' 'always enabled' mode". Meta has not conceded that characterization, and the office has filed no suit [30].

In re Meta AI Glasses Litigation

Thirteen putative class actions filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in March 2026 were consolidated on April 22, 2026 into a master action captioned In re Meta AI Glasses Litigation, master file 3:26-cv-01897-EMC, before Judge Edward M. Chen. The first-filed case, Bartone v. Meta Platforms, was docketed on March 4, 2026. The defendants are Meta Platforms and Luxottica of America; seven of the member cases also name Samasource Impact Sourcing, trading as Sama [22][24].

The core allegation is that Meta marketed the glasses as "designed for privacy, controlled by you" while routing captured audio and video to human annotators at Sama in Nairobi, Kenya, and that, in the Bartone complaint's words, "the anonymization did not always work, and faces that should have been covered were sometimes still visible". The Bartone complaint pleads California unfair-competition, false-advertising and consumer-remedies claims, the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, fraud, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract and warranty, and unjust enrichment; one member case, Boylett, adds California Invasion of Privacy Act and federal Wiretap Act counts [22][45]. These are allegations that have not been tested. No court has ruled on them.

Meta's response, given by spokesperson Christopher Sgro to TechCrunch and reported by Road to VR on March 10, 2026, was: "Unless users choose to share media they've captured with Meta or others, that media stays on the user's device. When people share content with Meta AI, we sometimes use contractors to review this data for the purpose of improving people's experience, as many other companies do. We take steps to filter this data to protect people's privacy and to help prevent identifying information from being reviewed" [23].

Procedurally the case is early. Judge Chen appointed three interim co-lead counsel on July 19, 2026, Thomas E. Loeser of Cotchett Pitre & McCarthy, Ryan J. Clarkson of Clarkson Law Firm and Tina Wolfson of Ahdoot & Wolfson, naming the individual attorneys rather than their firms [25]. Under the consolidation order the plaintiffs file a consolidated complaint within 45 calendar days of that appointment, with defendants responding 75 days later [24]. As of August 1, 2026 no consolidated complaint had been filed, no motion to dismiss had been briefed, and there had been no ruling on the merits. The data labeling and human-in-the-loop review practices at issue are common across the industry; whether they are compatible with how this particular product was advertised is what the case will decide. Fuller treatment of the regulatory and civil-society response, including the European position on bystander consent and the institutional bans adopted during 2026, is at smart glasses privacy.

Accessibility programs

Meta has aimed a substantial part of its glasses marketing at blind and low-vision users, and two 2026 programs gave that some substance.

On June 12, 2026 Meta announced that it would give Ray-Ban Meta glasses free to every legally blind American veteran, more than 130,000 people, with requests routed through the Blinded Veterans Association at bva.org/glasses and organizational applications through TechSoup. Partners included Tunnel to Towers, Homes for Our Troops, Lighthouse Guild, the American Council of the Blind, National Industries for the Blind and Oscar Mike, with monthly webinars and in-person training events [32].

On July 27, 2026 Meta announced the recipients of its AI Glasses Impact Grants, launched in January 2026: nearly $2 million across 30 United States organizations, drawn from nearly 500 applications. The program runs two tracks, Accelerator Grants for organizations already deploying AI glasses at scale and Catalyst Grants for developers building on the Wearables Device Access Toolkit, across accessibility, workforce safety, education, agriculture and economic opportunity. Named projects include coaching construction workers, assisting people with dementia, supporting field-service contractors and real-time language tutoring [38].

The Ray-Ban Meta hardware is now one of several branches, each covered in its own article.

Competitive position

As of mid-2026 the Ray-Ban Meta line is the reference design for the category, and the competitive picture is best read as a share question rather than a feature question: Counterpoint put Meta at 82% of global smart glasses shipments in H2 2025, with Xiaomi a distant second on the strength of its China business, and Chinese entrants including TCL-RayNeo, Li Auto, Rokid, Baidu and Meizu splitting a fragmented remainder [12][40]. Google confirmed at I/O 2026 that Gemini-powered glasses from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster would launch in fall 2026, and Apple is widely rumored to be preparing smart glasses of its own for 2027 [31]. The Apple Vision Pro is frequently put in the same conversation but is a different category of device. A fuller breakdown of vendors, shipment estimates and forecasts is at AI glasses market.

Four things explain the lead, and none of them is display technology. The frames are ordinary Ray-Bans, which removes the social cost that sank Google Glass. EssilorLuxottica's optical retail network puts the product in front of people buying glasses rather than buying gadgets. The voice assistant improves through over-the-air updates on hardware that is otherwise fixed, which has kept three-year-old Gen 1 units useful. And until Meta One in mid-2026 there was no subscription attached to any of it.
