MediaTek Inc. is a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It designs system-on-chip (SoC) processors and does not operate its own fabrication plants, contracting manufacturing to foundries, chiefly TSMC. The company was founded on 28 May 1997 as a spin-off from United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), where the founding team had been designing chipsets for home entertainment products. It listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (ticker 2454) on 23 July 2001.[1][2]

MediaTek describes itself as the world's fifth-largest fabless chip company, and it says its silicon powers more than two billion devices a year and close to one in three mobile phones globally.[2] Its best-known products are smartphone processors: the Dimensity 5G line at the high end and the older Helio family in the mid-range and budget tiers. History and corporate background

MediaTek started by designing controller chips for optical disc drives, then expanded into chipsets for DVD players and digital televisions before entering wireless. According to its own account and public records, the company "started out designing chipsets for optical drives and subsequently expanded into chips for DVD players, digital TVs, mobile phones, smartphones and tablets."[1] It set up a dedicated mobile-devices division in 2004 and shipped feature-phone baseband chips such as the MT6225, MT6252, and MT6235. Those low-cost, highly integrated designs sold in very large volumes, and by 2011 MediaTek was shipping more than 500 million mobile SoCs a year.[1]

The company grew partly through acquisitions. It bought Inprocomm in 2005, Analog Devices' cellular baseband operations in 2007, Wi-Fi specialist Ralink in 2011, display and TV chip maker MStar Semiconductor in 2014, and power-management firm Richtek in 2015.[1] The MStar deal in particular strengthened MediaTek's position in television and display drivers.

MediaTek is chaired by Ming-Kai Tsai, one of its founders. Rick Tsai is chief executive officer and Joe Chen is president.[1] The company reported 2024 revenue of NT$530.59 billion (roughly US$16 billion) and net income of NT$107.14 billion, and it employed about 22,500 people as of early 2025.[1]

Smartphone processors: Helio and Dimensity

MediaTek's mobile portfolio splits into two brands. Helio, introduced around 2015 with parts such as the Helio X20, covers 4G LTE mid-range and budget processors. Dimensity, launched on 26 November 2019 with the Dimensity 1000 (which MediaTek promoted as the first mobile SoC to support the AV1 video codec), is the 5G line that spans mid-range to flagship.[1]

The Dimensity 9300 was notable for dropping small efficiency cores entirely, using one prime Cortex-X4, three additional X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores instead of the usual big-little arrangement.[5] The current flagship, the Dimensity 9500, is built on TSMC's N3P (third-generation 3 nm) process and pairs Arm's 2025 C1 CPU cluster with a Mali G1-Ultra GPU and the NPU 990 neural engine.[5] It powers 2025 flagship phones such as the Oppo Find X9 and the vivo X300 series.[4]

Market position

Counterpoint Research reported that MediaTek reached a 31 percent share of the smartphone chipset market in the third quarter of 2020, making it the largest vendor by volume, and that it shipped 351.8 million chipsets over 2020 to overtake Qualcomm for the first time.[1] MediaTek's strength has historically been in the mid-range and budget segments, where its Helio and lower Dimensity parts ship in very large numbers, while Qualcomm and Apple have led the premium tier by revenue. The Dimensity 9000 series was MediaTek's push to close that gap at the top end. The company continues to describe its chips as powering roughly one in three phones worldwide.[2]

On-device AI: NPU, APU, and NeuroPilot

MediaTek has shipped a dedicated on-chip AI accelerator in its flagship SoCs for years. It originally branded the block the APU (AI Processing Unit) and now labels it the NPU (Neural Processing Unit); the Dimensity 9500, for example, carries the "NPU 990."[3][5] The accelerator is designed around what MediaTek calls Deep Learning Accelerators (performance cores) and Visual Processing Units (flexible cores), together with a hardware scheduler.[6]

Personal computing, IoT, and the edge

MediaTek's Kompanio line supplies Arm-based SoCs for Chromebooks and Chromebook Plus laptops, with the Kompanio Ultra tier serving as the premium option and carrying an integrated NPU for on-device AI.[2][5] This puts MediaTek in the Arm-PC space alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon X and Apple's M-series, though focused on Chrome OS rather than Windows.

For embedded and industrial use, MediaTek sells the Genio platform, a family of SoCs and modules aimed at the Internet of Things. In 2026 the company extended Genio to bring on-device AI processing to robotics, drones, and industrial IoT.[13] Networking, connected TV, and smart-home chips round out a portfolio that, by MediaTek's own figures, reaches around 20 percent of homes.[2]

Automotive: Dimensity Auto and the NVIDIA partnership

MediaTek entered the car market under the Dimensity Auto brand, concentrating on the digital cockpit (infotainment, instrument clusters, and in-cabin assistants) rather than the safety-critical autonomous-driving stack. In May 2023 it announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to use Dimensity chips for advanced vehicle infotainment, combining MediaTek's SoC with NVIDIA graphics and AI technology.[1]

That partnership has since deepened. MediaTek's automotive flagship, the Dimensity AX C-X1, is built on a 3 nm process and integrates NVIDIA's GPU, AI, and graphics technologies to deliver what the companies describe as AI-enabled cockpit experiences with multimodal interaction, 5G telematics, and agentic AI for driver and passenger assistance.[9] In June 2026 MediaTek and NVIDIA announced a global, multi-year automotive partnership, with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies (a Hon Hai/Foxconn subsidiary) integrating the C-X1 platform into production vehicles.[9] The automotive cockpit is one of the clearest examples of MediaTek positioning its chips as autonomous vehicle and connected-car compute, even though the C-X1 targets the cabin experience rather than self-driving perception.

AI data-center silicon

MediaTek's newest direction is AI infrastructure. Under the banner of MediaTek Data Center Solutions (DCS), the company offers end-to-end AI data-center platforms that include custom ASIC designs and custom XPUs, advanced 2.5D and 3.5D packaging, and high-speed interconnect.[7] Custom XPUs of this kind are the accelerators that large cloud providers commission instead of buying merchant GPUs. The most established example of that model is Broadcom, which co-develops Google's TPU line across generations and manages its ASIC design and TSMC fabrication.[11] MediaTek's DCS business puts it into the same custom-silicon market as a newer entrant, targeting hyperscaler and cloud data center accelerator work, though the company has not publicly named a data-center accelerator customer.

Two other data-center efforts are concrete. MediaTek has shown co-packaged optics (CPO) reaching up to 400 Gbps per fiber,[7] and in March 2026 it announced, with Microsoft Research, an active optical cable that uses arrays of directly modulated MicroLEDs (drawing on Microsoft's MOSAIC technology) instead of lasers. MediaTek claims the design uses up to 50 percent less power than conventional VCSEL-based cables, matches copper reliability at longer reach, and scales to 800 Gbps and beyond, aimed at cross-rack links in AI training clusters.[10] These optical interconnects address the networking bottleneck inside large AI accelerator clusters.

MediaTek also builds parts of NVIDIA's systems. NVIDIA's DGX Spark personal AI computer is powered by the GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, which pairs a roughly one-petaFLOP Blackwell GPU with a 20-core Arm Grace CPU over coherent unified LPDDR5x memory.[12][14] MediaTek co-develops the CPU and system silicon in NVIDIA's Spark line.[15] In June 2026 the two companies extended the collaboration to consumer Windows PCs under NVIDIA's RTX Spark brand, with MediaTek contributing the high-performance CPU, a memory controller supporting up to 128 GB of unified memory, power-management silicon, and integrated wireless, all manufactured at TSMC; the first RTX Spark laptops are expected in the second half of 2026.[8] MediaTek has also cited NVLink Fusion, NVIDIA's interconnect for mixing custom CPUs and accelerators, as part of its data-center roadmap.[16]

Manufacturing and TSMC dependence

As a fabless company, MediaTek relies entirely on outside foundries for production, and its most advanced products are tied closely to TSMC. Every flagship Dimensity SoC in the table above is fabricated at TSMC, moving from the N4 and N4P (5 nm-class) nodes through N3E and N3P (3 nm), and the Dimensity AX C-X1 automotive chip and NVIDIA RTX Spark PC silicon are likewise built on TSMC processes at 3 nm and below.[5][8][9] That dependence is common to the fabless model and is shared by Apple, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and Broadcom, but it means MediaTek's ability to compete at the top end is gated by its access to TSMC's newest nodes and packaging capacity. The company being based in Taiwan, alongside TSMC, keeps that supply chain geographically concentrated.
